ZTARA VRATAZI - The Starstriders

I. INTRODUCTION
☼☼☼☼☼

So, the starstrider elves are a race of elves I made because god forbid I do anything simple in my life. They're absolutely open to make and utilize in your own RPs, you don't need to ask permission or anything.

Lore surrounding their culture and biology and such are as follows; They originate from the far north pole near Hyoite, but not a part of it. There aren't *many* elves, and only occasionally do they wander any further south than the Kilanthro mountains. The only exception is recently, when a bunch of Starstrider elves delved further south in order to try and find their Resonances-- their soulmates.

There's a lot of wiggle room for them, and most things can theoretically be rules-lawyered, you can absolutely feel free to ask me about little details and "what ifs" and such. If you have any questions or concerns drop me a PM or on Discord. This will likely remain a WIP as I add things I don't immediately think of, or are brought up as folks need.

All art is by me, unless otherwise noted!

II. OVERALL BIOLOGY
☼☼☼☼☼

HEIGHT AND ORGANS

◊ They tol. Super tol. Range from 5'11" at their absolute smallest, to 7'5" at their largest. Variations within this range tends to be decided by House, which are the elf 'ethnicities'.

◊ Because of this, their internal organs are extremely different from a human beings. Being capable of reaching up to 7'5", they have a second heart to maintain adequate blood flow so they don't end up fainting like a giraffe when upended.

◊ To go along with this is increased lung size and capacity, to better oxygenate their limbs. The combination of extra blood flow and better lung capacity means the elves are capable of very swift movements, and are able to keep up these movements for a prolonged amount of time.

◊ You will not win against them at cross-country. But that also means they don't usually have a need for mounts, and so have never met a horse before coming to the Southlands of Le'raana. Horses weird them the hell out.

◊ Because their reproductive organs are internal, and also due to their secondary heart and large lungs, the Starstriders have had to sacrifice space in terms of organs. Which means their livers are remarkably tiny for their size, and absolute garbage at processing things in any effective capacity. It takes very, very little alcohol for an elf to get absolutely sauced.

TEETH

◊ All the starstriders possess sharpened canines/medium-sized fangs, with sharpened premolars and molars as well. The only genuinely "human" teeth they possess are their incisors.

◊ The Starstriders tend towards a carnivorous diet, but with a strong preference for poultry and fish. They ave a terrible time chewing processed grains like bread, lots of kitty-cat nyahnyahnyahing. Their teeth are just genuinely not made for chewing the way herbivores do.

TWO VOICES

Diagram of an elf's mouth, modeled by House Horizon.

◊ Coloration of the mouth follows "House rules", which will be detailed below. Featured are the set of openings on either side of the palate that generate their secondary vocals, which are reminiscent of glass harps, though very faint and involuntarily made. This "second voice" cannot be controlled and is always present, but the volume by which it is made increases during periods of high emotional states. If an elf is screaming in anger, for instance, even a human can hear the secondary voice.

◊ This sound is in line with the elf's "soul", the deepest part of them that is entirely them at their absolute core. It's through listening to this sound (present in other Sapient individuals, elf or not) that the elf will find their mate for life.

◊ Due to their unique biology, Starstrider elves all have feminine voices, ranging from an alto to soprano depending on the elf. This has nothing to do with their gender, but simply a matter of how the elf themselves develop.

PSYCHIC OR MAGIC?

◊ Psionics and magic tend to be rarer for certain Houses than others. See House portion for deets yo.

◊ While any psionic is possible, and the same with magic, there is a cultural tendency with Starstriders to attribute magic to words, and use vocal or written spells to facilitate an intent. Starstrider mages are called "wordsmiths" by their people, as they often use literal words to cast their spells. A wordsmith who tells you your cart is going to catch fire can, just by virtue of saying it, make your cart catch fire.

COLORATION

◊ House coloration becomes more apparent after an infant is a few months old, slowly solidifying over time; baby elves are born nigh translucent, except for Horizons, who are born with their adult coloration from the start. Baby elves are identified for their Houses by their blood, which are a metallic hue that matches their future coloration.

◊ In rare cases, pigmentation disorders may occur. Albino adult elves never gain their full House coloration, and remain partially see-through in their limbs. Melanistic elves maintain a darker shade of their House hue, but their eyes remain the same as with non-melanistic members of the same House.

LIFESPAN

◊ Elf babies age at a rate of 6 "human years" to every 1 "elf year", until they reach adulthood, wherein it becomes 12 "human years" to 1 "elf year". As the elf ages even further, this gap between human/elf years increases, with the elves aging slower and slower over time.

◊ Age of adulthood: 120 years, which is the general equivalent of a human being in their early twenties.

◊ Functionally immortal; can be killed, get sick, etc, but will never die of old age in the classic sense.

◊ However, their emotions do run several shades deeper than most other species, and as such they are susceptible to health concerns if particularly strong emotions are present for too long. They can absolutely die of heartbreak. Excessive stress, depression, anxiety, and even things like anger can result in organ damage and things like muscular deterioration.

SEXUAL MONOMORPHISM AND REPRODUCTION

◊ All elves have the same set of reproductive organs; any elf can theoretically give birth, or impregnate another individual, depending on who their mate is. This is not determined by gender, as a woman elf can wind up siring all her children, while her male mate can end up being the one to give birth all the time.

◊ Elves possess only one "sex", and gender identity is entirely decided upon who the elf is. It's audible in their personal 'song', and other elves can hear and pick up on that instinctively, and address their companion accordingly. In other words, just by virtue of meeting Elf B face-to-face, Elf A automatically knows that Elf B identifies as female, and may address her by the proper pronouns without having to ask.

◊ What humans might consider secondary sex characteristics that determine gender (like growing facial hair) is just across the board common for elves and up to personal taste. The current fashion is that beards are kept short and simple, but there's no concept of beards being exclusively male. That's just a weird human thing that an elf may or may not adopt as they interact with the Le'raanian peoples.

GENETICS AND MIXED-RACE ELVES

◊ Elven genetics are severely strong - Starstrider genes are dominant and it takes several generations of dilution to obtain strong non-elven characteristics (ie skin color, eye color, singular reproductive organs, blah blah blah).

As you can see here, it takes several generations of non-elf parentage in order to get non-elf characteristics. For a House Phaeton elf to have strawberry-blonde hair, or rounder ears, for instance, he would have to be a good ten+ generations removed from his elf + elf ancestral pairing.

◊ Full-blooded elves do not possess mammary glands, and instead nurse solely through bloodletting, where the infant punctures the skin of the parent with a specialized baby tooth and drinks from the wound. A special """venom""" negates pain and instead prompts a hormone to make this process a bonding experience for both parent and infant. Nipples don't exist in elf populations and it's a bit of culture shock for elves to learn about them.

◊ Mixed-race elves (those whose genetic population contains material from other species) can possess mammary glands if they're at least fifteen generations removed from their last elf+elf ancestors. These tend to be small and nonfunctional, though, and there is no instinct to breast feed.

◊ It does not matter how far removed from "full blooded" elf status an individual is. If they end up mating with another Starstrider elf of any percentage, the genetic sequence does a "reset" and it's as if they never had non-elf DNA introduced at all. Elf A could be ten generations removed and have dark brown hair, and Elf B could be fifteen generations removed and have breast tissue and green eyes, but their child would be 100% elf with no non-elf characteristics.

◊ The only detriment to the population of the species is that elves don't usually attempt to mate with anyone but their Resonance, and finding that Resonance and recognizing it can take centuries. They are fated to have only one singular "soulmate" in their entire lifetime.

III. THE HOUSES
☼☼☼☼☼

"Houses" are essentially groupings of Starstrider elves to denote which type of star was influential at their birth. It's a set of physical differences rather than cultural, as there is no real separation of Houses into specific castes or jobs.

Percentiles listed are just for the sake of being able to do dice rolls and as a marker of how severe the rarity is.

☼☼☼☼☼

HOUSE PROCYON

◊ Average height of 6'. Can vary by a few inches here and there, but doesn't tend to get much taller or smaller.

◊ Born under a white-dwarf star's influence

◊ Tend towards very pale, iridescent types of colors. Babyblues, pale pinks, very light seafoam greens. They do not get much in terms of 'melanin', don't tan and typically don't have freckles, but their coloration does have a wider range of hues.

◊ Melanism in Procyon elves turn them a slightly darker grey, but they still remain relatively pale.

◊ Their mouths are pearlescent, with bright white teeth, and their eyes have lilac sclera and green-blue irises. Their pupils are nearly white.

◊ Percent chance of psionics: 7%

◊ Percent chance of magic: 12%

☼☼☼☼☼

HOUSE ARCHERNAR

◊ Average height of 6'4".

◊ Born under a blue star's influence

◊ Are always varying shades of blue, with lighter, grey-blue skin. Their hair holds the most hue variance, and can range towards greenish hues or purpling, but will always be darker than their skin. They can have freckles, and melanism in Archernar elves renders them a deeper, navy blue in coloration.

◊ Their teeth and mouths tend to be silver-blue in hue. Their eyes have an off-white sclera, and pale irises and pupils, like moonlight.

◊ Percent chance of psionics: 11%

◊ Percent chance of magic: 11%

☼☼☼☼☼

HOUSE PHAETON

◊ Average height of 6'10".

◊ Born under a yellow star's influence

◊ Probably the most "human" looking, with golden-tanned skin. They are never pale. Their hair is usually some kind of gold, though it can get towards platinum blonde.

◊ Their mouths are golden, with deep gold gums and bright teeth, which gives them the illusion of glowing like the sun. Their eyes are similar, with darker-goldenrod sclera and brighter yellows-white in their irises and pupils.

◊ Percent chance of psionics: 7%

◊ Percent chance of magic: 8%

☼☼☼☼☼

Rooibos is part-Kulshedra! Notice he only has a tiny amount of scales.

HOUSE ANTARES

◊ Average height of 7'2".

◊ Born under a red giant star's influence

◊ Their skin is always dark, never going lighter than a deep tan (with red undertones), and their hair color is almost always a crimson-red hue of varying shades. Some individuals may have more orange in their hair, but usually not by much.

◊ Their mouths and teeth tend towards a fiery-orange-red, and their eyes follow suit.

◊ Percent chance of psionics: 3%

◊ Percent chance of magic: 17%

☼☼☼☼☼

HOUSE HORIZON

◊ Average height: N/A, heights vary depending on what House the Horizon "should have been" if the parents had been Resonances.

◊ Born whenever an elf mates outside of Resonance in any fashion. If the person an elf mates with is not their one true soulmate, any resulting children will 100% be House Horizon, with zero exception.

◊ Their skin is always dark and greyed, thought the base hue can range depending on their parentage. Their hair is always a deep pitch black that does not catch light, and often it's hard to tell the strands apart for how much light is absorbed into the black. Their eyes are a bright, nigh-glowing blue, in stark contrast to the rest of them.

◊ In terms of mouths, Horizon elves resemble black mambas. Their gums are a deep purple-black, and their teeth are similarly greyed.

◊ Percent chance of psionics: 65%

◊ Percent chance of magic: 1%

IV. CULTURE
☼☼☼☼☼

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

◊ A generally fatalistic society, but in a very broad sense rather than on an individual basis. Starstrider elves believe in a "prophecy" that eventually nothing will remain of the universe but the void, as one by one each star dies out and everything collapses upon itself. They know there is no possible way to stop this from happening, and so have put their efforts into accepting it instead.

◊ Their fatalism is also tied with the concept of Resonance, and being destined for one person only in their lifetime. There is no way to change who they Resonate with, and so they have to cope however they can.

◊ Are phenomenally nonreligious, though depending on the culture an individual lives within, can adopt foreign philosophies and even reference foreign gods in regular conversation.

ART

◊ Tend towards geometric designs, intricate knotworks and harsh angles. Their jewelry is similar, and focused more towards etching large pieces rather than having delicate, tiny parts.

LANGUAGE

◊ Their language is complex and difficult to learn, and so they readily adopt any local languages they come across. They have plenty of time, being immortal, and having lived just north to the Sionad Tundra, they have been able to pick up on the Common Tongue rather readily.

FOOD

◊ Spicy, spicy, SPICY for a vast majority of their dishes.

◊ Typically mostly a protein, usually with a sauce, over a small amount of easy to eat vegetables or another small, soft base. Starstriders can't chew like humans do, and so anything that they can't just shred and/or swallow whole is difficult to eat.

◊ Seriously, don't rub your eyes if you get any of their food on your hands, you will be full of regrets.

FAMILY

◊ Because any elf can give birth, or sire children, they have very different names for their parents. A birthgiver, or "bibi" for short, is the one who carries the infant to term. An "opo" is the person responsible for siring the child in question.

◊ These mating pairs are almost exclusively Resonances with one another, and thus are deeply, deeply bonded. They have an extreme emotional attachment to their Resonance, and are often able to communicate with mere looks thanks to spending entire centuries with one another.

◊ The death of one often results in a grief so profound, it tends to kill the second shortly after.

◊ Occasionally, however, the remaining half of the pair may linger on. This can be because they feel they still have a duty to their family, or can find emotional support through other means, or another kind of coping mechanism. Sometimes, rarely, this means they may end up mating with someone else, which may produce a Horizon baby. This is seen as inappropriate behavior, but the child is not typically mistreated. However, they don't really "belong" anywhere, and other elves tend to treat them very separately.

◊ Cheating is almost unheard of. Starstriders don't hold many things sacred, but the proper care and treatment of the other half of your soul is about as high up as you can get. Abuse of your Resonance, any kind of harm, and indeed, cheating on them, is a crime so repulsive to many elves that they can hardly fathom it.

◊ Starstrider elves are a carnivorous predator-species. They have instincts to fight rather than flee, and as such are fiercely protective of their young. When a elf child is threatened (and on the Tundra, that can happen often), it's not uncommon for the elf parents to go berserk, attacking with sharp teeth and nails and everything they have to destroy whatever is threatening their kid. Given their heightened elfy-reflexes, it's more likely that the threat won't get far before the parents are on them like white on rice.

FUNERARY PRACTICES

◊ There is no concept of an afterlife in Starstrider culture; hell is a thing you make for yourself, and death is absolute. A person's spirit will only live on in the memories of those who knew them, and with Starstrider elves being as long-lived as they are, there is a real emphasis put on remembering those who passed.

◊ After death, bodies are often cremated and condensed to a dense block of ash and bone. This part of the process is largely without any kind of ceremony and is typically left to professionals with very little involvement from the family.

◊ Once the ashes are condensed, they are typically placed in a kind of reliquary, often as a long pendant and worn by the surviving family members/those left behind. Multiple bodies can be placed into larger reliquaries, with the largest being about the size of a cigarette pack all the way around.

◊ These reliquaries are often incredibly ornate, with overlapping details to where it's hard to tell where the reliquary opens. Oftentimes the only ones who know how are the funerary practitioners who insert the remains.

RESONANCE

◊ A very strong emotional attachment, and unbreakable.

◊ Starstriders don't typically get "married" like nonelven couples do, and so they don't usually use the words "husband" or "wife", instead referring to their significant other as their "Resonance".

◊ Essentially what we would call being 'soulmates'; Resonating happens when the vibrating frequency of an individual's spirit harmonizes with that of another. Once elves are adults, their frequency is set in stone, and thus they mate for life.

◊ Shit happens, though. While it's not culturally the norm to be promiscuous, certain circumstances could lead a Starstrider to such a lifestyle, whether because they cannot resonate, lost their resonance, or their resonance rejected their affections.
◊◊ This happens much more often with elf/nonelf couplings, as many individuals from other species don't feel the same way. The sound a soul makes is very faint, and it often takes an elf a good amount of quiet listening to hear another single person's "soul".

◊ Resonance isn't always obvious; sometimes it takes a good amount of time for a Starstrider to realize why they feel the way they do about a person. Unconsciously, however, their behavior will shift to be more protective of their desired mate, and they will seek to spend as much time together as possible.

V. THE SOLAR ECLIPSE
☼☼☼☼☼

WHEN SHIT GETS WEIRD

Once every several hundred years, depending upon location, a place on the Earth may bear witness to a total eclipse of the sun. While solar eclipses happen two or three times a year overall, a total visible eclipse taking place in a specific location is much rarer. Some parts of the world only have a total eclipse every 100-odd years. Other places may take at least four centuries in between. And other places still may not see a total eclipse within a thousand years of one another.

They are rare moments, and for the Starstriders, who are everything to do with the movement and presence of the stars, they are especially important. Not just because of their rarity, even for as long-lived a species as they are, but for the physical effects that take place when the sun is blotted from view by other celestial objects.

Starstrider Eclipse Mode only occurs within the area of the world the total eclipse may be viewed. Other Starstriders in other parts of the world are unaffected by this phenomenon.

TIMEFRAME

The total elapsed time for a Starstrider elf's "eclipse mode" is over the span of a few short minutes. It begins subtly, as the moon approaches the sun, and depending on positions may last anywhere from 3 to 8 minutes in totality. This mode is at its highest point during the totality of the eclipse, when the moon is actively in front of the sun, and ends a few seconds after the moon leaves the sun completely.

PHYSICAL CHANGES

A number of physical changes occur to Starstrider elves during the eclipse. Their appearances shift, and the elves themselves seem to be bathed in a redder kind of light (much like how light looks through smoke from a fire). Their eyes take on a vibrant glow, to where it's impossible to tell their sclera apart from their irises or pupils, such is the brightness.

Most noticeable however, is that each elf takes on a glowing halo as a result of the eclipse, mirroring what the sun looks like as the moon fully blocks it from view.

Along with changes in their appearance, Starstrider elves undergo other physical changes. They acquire a much higher body temperature, equivalent to a human running a fever of 110 degrees. They also become much stronger and faster, capable of moving at lightning speeds and catastrophic displays of physical strength. A blow from an eclipsed Starstrider elf is about as dangerous as a blow from a polar bear.

...Don't make an eclipsed elf hit you. It will only end badly.

ILL OMENS

Eclipses are dangerous times. While they provide immense power, it's at a great cost— elven bodies are not meant to perform as their eclipse modes allow, and tearing tissue is a common occurrence amongst elves who are particularly active at this time.

An elf in the middle of a fight during the eclipse may find that he's signed his own death sentence, because once the eclipse is finished, he can be left with ruptured organs or worse. Hemorrhaging from the eyes, nose and mouth post-eclipse is very common, and most elves try to "wait out" the phenomenon by keeping as still as possible.

BORN UNDER AN INTERRUPTED STAR

Very rarely, an elf baby may be born during a total eclipse. This is a very dangerous time for both bibi and child, as while the birthgiver may be enhanced physically, so is their child, and the combination of overwhelming strength and heightened body temperatures can very well prove fatal to both elves.

But sometimes, a birthgiver can't prevent when labor happens, and sometimes an elf is born during some point in the eclipse. This has a number of different effects on the child, and none of them are considered a good sign.

The first is that, depending on what point of the eclipse the birth took place during, the child's coloration is interrupted. They may possess some of their original House coloration, but it's interrupted in places, much like the moon interrupts the sun. This leaves the child with patches of translucent skin akin to vitiligo, or in some cases, full elven albinism. Unlike "regular" cases of vitiligo and albinism, however, eclipse children maintain a permanent reddish-lighting, and a permanent (if much more muted) halo around their head.

The temperature change is also permanent, with eclipse-born elves running a permanent fever, which makes producing offspring very difficult. They also tend to be born with partial or total deafness, including deafness to Resonance-frequencies. This is considered an especially damning sentence by Starstriders, as being unable to hear your Resonance is the ultimate tragedy anyone can face.
