[Thread continued from HERE. Authors, in order of posting: Blue-chan as Terri, Sakkata, and Torr. Rhi-Rhi as Hatame]

It had taken a good day of quick traveling to actually bring the Mountains within range. Terri's durable muscles were burning, but she was not yet exhausted, thankfully. Dropping gracefully from the treetops, she awaited Hatame's approach. He was stuck in human form, and could not travel nearly as fast as she could with her lithe draconic form.

Terri was still carefully hidden within the folds of a dark brown cloak, the hood pulled up to cover her inuman form. From what one could see of her face, she was relatively young, perhaps 17 or 18. However, her skin was pure white. Well, until the sun hit it that is. Once the light touched and bounced off the color, it exploded in a dazzling array of colors that changed as she shifted. The color prism was all there, thanks to the odd properties of her skin. It was rare even among Drygans.
Eyes of ice blue were sharp and wary as she waited for her companion to appear.

Not too much further, and they'd be near Sakkata's still-stationary form...

--

Finally, finally, Terri came into his view, a figure in the distance, and Hatame picked up his pace to sprint the rest of the distance toward her. This whole time, he had been relying solely on their connection to follow herâ€"as she was far faster, and even if she wasn't, there was no way he could see her up in the trees from the groundâ€"and he had actually found the experience useful. It forced him to really concentrate and study how the connection worked, and to interpret what each sensation he got from their connection meant.

Being forced to do something could teach one quite a lot.

Slowing to a stop beside Terri, only then did he allow himself to rest, leaning against a tree to catch his breath and brushing his currently disheveled white hair from his dark-skinned face. Well...at least, his jaw-length bangs were white; the rest of his hair was coal-black and reached midway to his back. Like his companion, he was young, appearing maybe only a year or two older than her.

Under good conditions, and in good health, if he ran at a steady pace, he could go for hours. After all, he was in truth a Gryphon, and retained something of their endurance, even while in a human body. Of course, he wasn't exactly in good health anymore...his curse had sapped that a good deal, making his muscles burn and limbs ache whatever the case, but with Terri's healing, he was in as good a condition as he could get. And what with the current situation...that was incentive enough to keep him moving.

Aside from some breathlessness and achiness, he was hardly fatigued.

"She still hasn't moved, huh...?" he finally commented when he had regained his breath, green eyes looking toward the mountains that were now so close...

--

Terri waited for Hatame to catch his breath, able to feel his aches and pains due to her healing magick and the fact she had used it on him more than once. It was a nifty trick, to be able to search out and find what was wrong with a person by touch. Even more nifty if you had healed them before, because then you didn't need touch.
"I bet Sakkata could break that binding spell if she really tried." She started at length. Not the best thing to bring up, but it bothered her nothing had been done about the painful affliction yet. It zapped so much of his energy away...

With a sigh, Terri looked back towards Sakkata's signal. "No movement at all. I'm really worried Hatame." And it showed in her voice. Sakkata shouldn't have been so still for so long...
Damn it, what had happened to her??
"Are you ready to go yet?"

--

He grimaced slightly when Terri brought up his condition, and made a point to seem not to have heard. It was a touchy subject...and he didn't think Sakkata could break it. Hatame had confided in her about it, before, and the solution she had offered was ending his lifeâ€"which was the one solution he knew of, as well. He didn't know of any other solution...and it didn't seem like she would, either. But who knew? Maybe Terri was right. Maybe.

Not that any of that mattered, now. That wasn't what he was worried about. His sole focus was getting Sakkata back...everything else could wait.

"I'm really worried, too..." Hatame muttered, equally anxious, though he tried hard to reign that emotion in. Freaking out would do Sakkata no good. "But...yeah, let's go..."

Taking a deep breath, he set off again, a little quicker this time despite the pain that wanted to slow him. Try as he might to stay positive, this was really bothering him, and he wanted to get there as quickly as possible.

Please be alright...

--

Terri dashed after Hatame, a growing dread building in her stomach. Now more nervous than ever, she bolted ahead of Hatame, forgetting the earlier incident of getting blasted in the face.
This was just too important for her. So what if she got blasted again, at least she'd know Sakkata was alive and well!

After a few moments of Terri's disappearing from Hatame's view, her signal joined Sakkata's in the distance. It stopped then, and after a moment of silence, a piercing scream split the air.
And it was Terri's scream.

Right in front of her was what was left of Sakkata. Stripped of clothing, Sakkata hung from her ankles by a strip of rough rope which was in turn tied to a tree limb. It was more than likely she had been raped, and there were bruises all over her blue tinted flesh. Her face was battered so badly, and so swollen from it, that she hardly looked like Sakkata anymore. Her hair had been cruelly chopped from her head, and her ears were masses of flesh. Her tail lay in a bloody curl at the base of the tree, no longer attached to her body. Blood was smeared all along her frame, large claw gouges evident.
And her throat and wrists had been slit, now gaping red mouths of the grizzliest kind. She had been violated in every possible way...

Terri stared in horrified shock, legs trembling until finally she collapsed. She...the Chosen...she was dead...dead!!
No...it couldn't be...it just...no...
"Sakkata..."

--

Terri's scream jolted through Hatame, and he picked up his pace, fear coursing through him like wildfire and making the everlasting pain he felt seem non-existant. Thoughts of what could have happened coursed through his mind, despite how he tried to reign them back. He had to stay calm...fight for calm. Panic would help no one...Gods, let them both be alright...let themâ€"

He stopped dead.

The scene he came upon wasn't one that existed in real life. It was a scene straight out of a nightmare, and all Hatame could do was stare blankly, unmoving and unblinking, at the violated figure that bled and hung from the tree limb, numbness coating him, even as a terrible, clenching nausea gripped him. No...that wasn't...it wasn't her. Things like this...they just didn't happen. It just...it wasn't real. He was still unconscious, and this was all a dream. One long, drawn out, horrible nightmare...the worst he'd ever had...

Sakkata wasn't...she just couldn't...

His body seemed to move automatically, as though without him even realizing, as he moved slowly toward the body with unnatural, cold calm, the only thing betraying that calm being the shakiness of his limbs. Standing beneath her, he glanced up at the branch she was tied to, and the only thought that came to mind was that it was too high for him to reach. Alright...

Pain raced through his limbs as he embraced the source of his magic, but it felt so distant. Someone else's pain. A second later, and fire had gnawed away at the rope that suspended her, and he caught her body mechanically as he released his hold on his magic's source, the force of her weight and the force of the magic's attack sending him crumpling. But he seemed not to notice, even as he coughed up blood. Instead, he worked on pulling the remainder of the rope off her, gently supporting her.

"Terri, heal her..." He said it calmly, not even looking up. He had gotten the rope off her, and was removing his overcoat, covering her battered body with it. God damnit...he'd KILL Torr for this... "Terri? God DAMMIT Terri, why aren't you healing her!? I can't heal her! I can't heal! You HAVE to heal her, Terri, I can't! Or just bloody tell me how to! Earth magic, right!? I have Earth magic! Just tell me, and I'll do it!"

Pain scored every inch of his body as he once again reached for his magic, creating a sensation akin to having ones insides shredded. But that agony had nothing to do with the moisture in his eyes, which he stubbornly blinked back. He didn't care...he didn't care if his magic killed him, he'd heal her if Terri wouldn't...somehow...

--

Terri had gone numb inside. There was nothing left. Nothing. One look, one good look at the scene before her had blasted everything away, and it had fallen like shards of broken glass.
There was nothing...

Turning her head painfully slow, Terri watched with clouded eyes as Hatame passed her and moved right up to the tree. What was he...? No...he was using magick...
Her body...it had to be...burned...and...
Terri trembled as she watched, tears finally breaking free and cascading down her face. It just wasn't right!! IT WASN'T RIGHT!!

She shook her head mechanically as Hatame shouted at her. His frustration and despair poured out with his words, and though she opened her mouth, no sound would come forth. Slowly, she crawled toward him and the corpse that was Sakkata.
"I...I can't Hatame." She hissed lightly as she felt him pulling up his magick. "Please...don't. She isn't...she can't be..." Terri clamped her teeth together and hung her head. "She's dead Hatame! Dead!! I can't bring the dead back to life, no matter how hard I try! And neither can you!"
Her head snapped back up and she stared straight at Hatame. "Don't kill yourself Hatame. We...we have to find Torr. We have to make him pay for this!"

"Make me pay? Whatever for?" The cold, cruel voice of Torr came from behind them. Standing calmly upon a tall, craggy rock, the demented Drygan looked down at them. His hair was completely white, and he had a maddened look of power in his eyes.
"Well, here I am, if you really need to 'make me pay'." He smirked, sharp teeth flashing. There were no traces of blood on him, but one knew he had drank Sakkata's blood in order to gain her power.
And just the thought made Terri shudder with fury, her pupils narrowing to tiny slits as energy shot from her small form. Damn him...DAMN HIM!!!

"I KNOW she's dead!" Hatame snapped, and that single, last word sent a painful shudder through him. Somehow...it just made everything more real, to actually say it. It made it more final, more...Gods, he didn't know anymore... "I'm not stupid, Terri! But...but...she was...Torr...just look at her! Terri, please, heal her...she deserves at least this ONE small dignity!"

It was irrational, he was being irrational. He knew it, but he didn't care. She was dead...you couldn't bring back the dead...no matter what; no one could, and he knew it. And he didn't mean to try differently. It was done. There was nothing he or anyone else could do. But, for some reason, it just felt really important to him. He couldn't stand to see her like this...no one deserved to go through what she had gone through...no one...

They'd failed her...

He turned his head away so she wouldn't see his own tears, even though his voice easily gave it away. And he only nodded vaguely when she mentioned Torr, though his posture stiffened defiantly. Torr. No...actually, he could think of one person who deserved to go through what she had. And much, much more...

And then came that voice...

"FUCKING BASTARD!" Hatame was on his feet in a second, even as his magic battered him from within as he held onto it, making him sway slightly, blood from his previous attack staining his lips. But rage and pain such as he had never felt before had made him numb to it; all he could think about was Sakkata...and killing Torr. Everything else simply ceased to be...

The only thing that kept him from attacking right then and there was the thought that if he was careless, they would be killed and not Torr. Hatame wasn't worried about dying; he had nothing to lose, especially not anymore. The only thought that worried him was dying without knowing for certain that Torr had, too.

--

She flashed her teeth at Torr, snarling deep in her throat. She would do what Hatame asked! Sakkata would not be put to rest holding the scars of Torr's torture!
Whipping around, Terri scooped Sakkata up and hugged her bloody form close. She rocked lightly with grief, but through the fuzz of despair, she focused her energies on Sakkata's cold and limp body.

Slowly but surely, Sakkata's deadly wounds closed themselves, re-knitting carefully. Her hair did not grow back, nor did her ears or tail. Those were things no magick could bring back, as Terri knew all too well. Her own hair, ears, and tail were cropped, just like Sakkata's now were...
"Damn you Torr..."

Torr simply laughed. "Call me all the names in the world, spit out the worst terms you know. It changes nothing. But I will do one thing in the Chosen's honor. I think I'll cremate her myself."
With that, he was beside Terri in the blink of an eye. Even she had been able to sense his movement, let alone see it.
Blue eyes widening in surprise, she was sent tumbling by a swift and simple backhand from Torr.

Rolling to a stop a good ten feet away, Terri was too dazed to rise at first. "No...H...Hatame! Don't let Torr burn her body!"
It had blinked right into her head. The only true way to put a Drygan to rest was to burn them with the flames from a dragon, their ancient ancestor. Drygan bodies didn't rot, so to bury them was pointless.
That was it! That was it!!
She had to keep Sakkata's body intact!
"Hatame!"
She still couldn't rise enough to try and stop Torr herself.

Torr, on the other hand, had gruffly heaved Sakkata's corpse off the ground by her head, his free hand summoning an intense heat. Power pulsed from his body, and the shear amount of it was scary. Just standing there he put off energy, enough to make into a hundred simple attacks with so much more to spare.
"Goodbye, Sakkata." He hissed, just inches from lighting her body and watching it go up in smoke.

Out of the corner of his eye, Hatame saw that Terri had done as he had pleaded for her to do and healed Sakkata's tortured body...and through his anger and despair, some small sense of peace permeated that mass of conflicting emotions and numbness. He didn't know why it was so important to him...but in that moment, that small act seemed as though it meant the world.

One small dignity...it was the least they could offer. She deserved so much more than this...she deserved better...

And then Torr laughed, and his words sent a small chill through him, momentarily slicing through the rampant hatred he felt and refocusing his attention. Damn him...wait. Cremate her? Like hell he woulâ€"!

Hatame hadn't the time to react. A split second later, and Torr was beside Terri and had sent her tumbling with a simple movement of his hand, to land in a daze feet away, and in the next instant, he had grasped Sakkata's corpse and heaved her off the ground. And Hatame didn't need to hear Terri's desperate cries to leap into action. No...there was no way in HELL he would let the bastard touch her! He was NOT taking her! Not again!

Without even thinking, Hatame tackled Torr roughly from behind, aiming to drag him down to the ground and, at the very least, make him lose both his focus and his grip on Sakkata. At the same time, he focused on his magic, focused on fire, focused on sending white-hot tendrils searing against, into, Torr's skin. Torr wanted to burn Sakkata? Two could play that game. Hatame would burn Torr as much as he possibly could, as long as he possibly could!

Fortunately for Hatame, Torr had seemed to ignore Hatame's presence, for he had landed right between he and Terri. And, after all, why would Torr pay him much mind, when he was physically weaker than even Terri and couldn't even weild magic without severe consequence? But none of that mattered; for now, not seeming a threat worked to Hatame's benefit. Well, hopefully.

"TERRI! Get Sakkata out of here!" he shouted, holding on, literally, for dear life.

--

Torr snarled in surprise, thrown slightly off balance by Hatame's sudden tackle. Torr was big though, and strong, and only stumbled a bit from the impact. But one surprise followed another as Torr felt his flesh begin to burn in white-hot flames.
"DAMN!"

Throwing Sakkata's dead body away, Torr reached around to heave Hatame off and away from him. Sharp nails dug into soft flesh as he grabbed the unfortunate man, and with abnormally high strength yanked him free. Torr haphazardly tossed Hatame away, so intent was he on stopping the magickal fire before it did too much damage.
"You will pay for that!!" He roared, bits of his back and waist now charred and painful.

Terri heard Hatame's order, but paid it no heed. She was going to make Torr pay for what he did...SHE WAS GOING TO MAKE HIM PAY!!!
"TORR!!"
She pulled on the very deepest reserves of her power, and it flared around her, from her. She could feel it well up, begging to break free of her body and spill out into the world.
And she would let it, too!

Dashing straight for Torr, Terri moved at an inhuman speed. So fast she was nothing but a blur. However, Torr was faster. In the blink of an eye his clawed hand protruded through the back of her cloak, having gone right through.

Well, right through the cloak anyway.

Terri was unharmed, crouching at Torr's feet, smirking dangerously. Such a simply trick...discard the cloak at the last minute, and that will be what he attacks.
Launching her small frame up, Terri latched onto the large Drygan male much as Hatame had.
"Take this, you BASTARD!!"

Terri's body exploded in white light, and the ground beneath them froze solid. And that was exactly what she was trying to do to Torr, too. Everywhere her flesh touched his, the skin began to freeze, sharp ice crystals rupturing delicate cells. His own immense power stopped him from being frozen solid, but it wouldn't stop frost bite at such a close, surprised range.

Yowling in pain, Torr wrenched Terri free of him, his grabbing hand beginning to freeze as well. Throwing her slight form with all his might, Terri flew in a high arc into the air.
She landed with a sickening crack, and lay still.

Hatame landed hard where he was thrown, blood blossoming where Torr's claws and the rocky ground had scored and bruised his body, and for a few moments he lay in a daze. In the shock of the impact, Hatame had nearly lost his hold on his magic, but he clung to it desperately. No matter what...he couldn't let go of it, not until he was through. If he let go now...he wouldn't be able to do any more; the attack that would follow would be debilitating, far worse than any he had ever had...maybe even lethal, and he knew it. He'd never before held his magic in him as long as he was now, never used so much before since the curse. But he had to.

He was doing this for all the right reasons. At least, he thought so.

Vaguely, as he struggled doggedly to rise to his feet again and regain his bearings, he saw with relief that his attack had done some damage...

And that Terri had taken over while he was down.

It all happened so quickly, she was so fast, and for a moment as Terri latched onto Torr and sharp ice coated his body, Hatame thought Terri had him. But then Torr ripped Terri off him...and she landed and...

Oh, fuck, no...Terri!!

"DAMMIT!" Drawing upon his magic, he let it fill him fully, let it rage within him even as pain expanded within him and that familiar copper taste coated his tongue, even as dizziness wanted to floor him, keeping him rooted to the ground in a crouch. He was drawing more than he should, and he knew it...and he knew that the repurcussions would be horrendous. But Torr was so bloody powerful, and...and he had to push himself to the limit and beyond if he even had the slightest hope of doing anything to him! And then, focusing, he sent that magic out toward Torr. Terri had had the right idea...and Hatame would add to it, and he did, combining Earth with Ice, focusing on sending sharp shards of both deep into flesh, and on continuing to coat Torr in the freezing, hard substance.

Torr was strong...there was no doubt about it. Eerily powerful, and even that was a drastic, deadly understatement. But...but everyone needed air, no one could live without it, and Hatame kept that in mind. If he could just cover Torr's face, cover his nose and mouth...maybe...

--

Torr hissed in pain, both burnt by fire and ice. Third degree burns had blossomed where Hatame had touched him, and now bits of his flesh were turning black with decary from frost bite. Sheets of ice had even begun to form on his flesh, numbing it.

A scream of pure rage and excruciating pain errupted from Torr, and it was by far the most unnatural sound one could make. Blood splurted from the strange holes being made in his flesh by Hatame's magick.
Crimson splashed onto the earth, and Torr's pupils dialated with anger.
Ignoring the ice that krept dangerously high on his face, Torr rushed Hatame, and a sudden wave of crushing power errupted from him.
Hatame's magick was repelled with ease, and Torr was practically on top of him, ready to rip him to bits.

In the backdrop, Terri was painfully pulling herself into a sitting position. Her arm had snapped, and her ankle was sprained badly. There would be no more running around for her. But then, she didn't need to in order to stop Torr's attack.
Focusing her power into the earth, she summoned up her magick.
Quite suddenly, knobby roots burst from the ground and twisted around Torr, stoping him in his tracks. Within moments, the 'roots' were manifesting into a full-blown tree, which was quickly encasing Torr's yowling frame.
It would not hold him for long though.

Weak, Terri struggled to stay concious. "Hatame!" A seperate root lashed out, caught Hatame's leg, and pulled him across the leaf-littered ground and away from the constricting tree.
It released him right next to Torr's blood.
"Drink it! You have to drink his blood, and you can steal some of his and Sakkata's power! Quickly, I can't hold the spell!"
She was physically and mentally straining to retain Torr even as the tree caught fire and began to crack open.
"Quickly!!!"

--

It was all Hatame could do to keep his magic flowing into Torr, watching with grim determination as the magic had its effect and praying it would be over soonâ€"though it didn't seem close to concluding. He didn't know how much longer he could keep at this...he'd never held onto his magic this long, ever, and he didn't know how much longer he could as it churned within him, making him sway where he crouched as his muscles burned with the warning of agony to come. How bloody much more could Torr take!? With the burns of fire and frost blackening and rotting his flesh, and with blood spurting from his budding wounds and splashing to the ground as Earth and Ice stabbed him...Gods, but anyone else would have been downed by now from the sheer pain of it all, if nothing else!

The most it seemed to be doing was making Torr even more pissed.

It was surreal. It was sickening. And it downright frightened Hatame, even if rage and despair had kept that emotion well hidden. It was like...it was like the creature was no longer even mortal.

And then Torr charged, and Hatame's magic was repelled like it was nothing. Desperately, he tried to regain control of the flows that had been suddenly repressed, to channel them back at Torr, but Torr's power easily overwhelmed his own, and all he could do was watch him approach...

...Until, at the last moment, Torr was wrapped up in the thick roots that burst abruptly from beneath him, encasing him within the tree that was quickly forming.

Terri! That could only be Terri's doing! Gods, with the way she had landed, he had feared a lot worse for her. She was aliâ€"

He hardly had time to register her voice before somethingâ€"another root?â€"grabbed his leg and pulled him across the ground, landing him right next to the blood that had pooled on the ground. Disoriented, he quickly made to rise, not wanting to let Torr, however contained (for the moment), out of his sight, but Terri's words made him freeze. Eyes widening, he glanced down at the blood again, unable to keep from paling a little. Drink it...well...of course it made sense! Sakkata had explained about it before! And, as a Gryphon, he'd consumed plenty of blood-drenched flesh in his life...that wasn't so much a factorâ€"except that this wasn't blood from a prey animal. This was Torr's blood! The idea was enough to make his stomach churn.

But...it was also Sakkata's blood...the blood that Torr had so savagely spilt to end her young life...

Taking a deep breath and repressing a shiver, he wasted no more time before he closed his eyes and bent to drink it, determined to drink it all without wretching, even though that was the first response the action evoked. Still, he kept it down, and continued to drink the blood as quickly as he could. He could hear the tree cracking...but he didn't let it distract him. There was just no time to allow that.

For Sakkata...

--

Terri was strugling with everything she had to keep Torr contained. Magick whipped about her body, creating small yet painful gashes in her flesh. Sweat poured out of her strained body, every muscle shaking uncontrollably. She was pulling on the deepest reserves of power. She'd have nothing left after this...

Finally, Torr burst free with a terrible roar. Power rocketed into the sky, and Terri was smashed backwards as her connection to the magick was severed abruptly. Rolling to a stop and looking like a torn rag doll, Terri did not move again.
But it was alright...because...he had drank it...

HATAME!!!!

The shout came from with Hatame, pulling from a part of him that was no longer a part of him. Power foreign to him surged forth, burning away all else and filling him with light. There was nothing else.
Just pure, untainted energy.

Torr screamed with rage, blood pouring from his wounds. He rushed Hatame, but would never get closer than five feet from him. The energy rushed from the host gryphon, smashing into Torr with amazing power. The Drygan's chest caved in, and then went even further, organs and ribs exploding from his back as the energy smashed into him like an invisible cannon ball. He stood for a moment that seemed like forever, then crumpled to the earth.
Even with all his stolen powers, that was one wound he could not bounce back from.

Thank you...Hatame...

Terri shivered very slightly on the ground. Blood was leaking from her mouth, it's coppery taste coating her tongue. The world was blurring before her eyes. She had...to tell...Hatame...
"Ha...Hatame..."
Her voice, so weak...please let him hear...it was too important for him not to know...!

It was...over?

Hatame found himself shaking uncontrolably, partially from sheer exertion and exhaustion, from using too much magic, for clinging to it stubbornly stillâ€"he couldn't hold on much longer...but for some reason, he just had toâ€"and partially because of what had just happened. What had just happened!? Torr was motionless on the earth, bits of him sprayed along the ground. He had...he'd drunk the blood, heard the tree explode, seen Terri, heard a voice, a very familiar voiceâ€"maybe he was hallucinating; yeah, that was likelyâ€"and then...then something happened.

And now it was so silent.

Except...

The sound of someone weakly speaking his name snapped him out of his shock. Terri. That was why he was still holding into his magic. If he let go now, like his body so wanted to, he didn't know what would happen...he wouldn't be able to do anything...at the very least. She was hurt...Torr'd done something to her...

On wobbly limbs, he managed to half crawl, half stumble over to her, collapsing heavily next to her. He felt so light-headed, blood forming in his mouth that he quickly swallowed down, trying hard to conceal the damage he had taken. And, very vaguely, he could make out Terri's condition. Dammit... "Terri...you're..." He coughed. "You're...Terri, tell me how...how to..." He trailed off, swallowing back blood. Damn! He had the element. He could do it if he just knew how! He had nothing more to lose!

He wouldn't be able to hold on much longer. He could feel his grip slipping.

--

Terri could hardly make out Hatame's outline. Everything was so damn blurry...
She could still feel his magick, feel it triggering the strange curse that tore him up inside.
"Let...it...go..." She whispered, and was forced to take a deep, shudering breath afterward.
Coughs then stole her body, convulsing her chest, and splattering blood onto the dusty earth.

Calmed, Terri knew what was coming. And she had to tell Hatame what to do so her dying would not be for naught.
"Hatame...you have...to bring...Sakkata back..."
Another painful breath. And her blood just kept pouring out, within, and outside of, her body.
"Use the connection...the hair...do a...blood...bond..."
Terri grimaced, teeth bared and coated in her own blood. She had to get it all out in time!!
"Torr's blood...and...yours...have her...power in it...You have to...get that power...back into...her...Blood too..."
Revival spells were so damn complicated to do, let alone explain. Not much time...so little...

Rest now Terri. Rest.

Such a...familiar...voice....
She was fading...
Sakkata....
It was Sakkata...

Terri's life finally extinguished, eyes dulling as the light within went out. And yet her body would not decay. It would stay just as it was, until cremated with intense heat.

Hatame...Did you think I'd die so easily?

There was a hint of amusement in that voice that spoke from within Hatame. From deep within, where his magick lay, and where her magick now lay as well. And the curse that held that magick back was really beginning to tick.her.off!!

I'm going to screw this damn curse all to hell, it's caused enough trouble! Then you can focus on bringing me back, alright?

Good ol' Sakkata...

--

Hatame shook his head slowly, lest the dizziness overwhelm him. Let it go? No, he couldn't...if he did...he couldn't...not yet.

He watched Terri worriedly as she struggled to speak, struggled to breathe, even! Inwardly, he, too, knew what was coming...and there was nothing he could do to prevent it. As usual. All he could do was listen to her as she struggled to speak, and cling to his magic so that he could listen to her. No...not her, too...

Holding onto calm as well as he could, he focused on what he had to do, and absorbed her words...even though he couldn't understand them. Connection...blood bond...but...but how? He'd never done anything like that! He had no idea what she was talking about! Why hadn't she...why hadn't she drank the blood instead!? She knew what to do! And if she had...she wouldn't be...

That same voice filled his mind...and this time he knew it for certain to be Sakkata's. Even though it made absolutely no sense...but, then, nothing did, really. "S-Sakkata...?" Beside him, he could feel Terri lose her battle, her spasms ending...and mixed with the sense of horror and helplessness he felt at that, there was also relief. It wasn't right...it wasn't right for anyone to suffer like that.

After this was over, he'd probably be joining her...he just had to hold on until then.

Wait...what?

"What...? But...Sakkata...how...?" Screw the curse to hell? Yeah...that was definitely Sakkata. And that phrase, if he knew her, usually meant destruction...

Maybe he was hallucinating.

--

Sakkata may be dead, but she hadn't given up. Her spirit was too screwed up to leave this world anyway. Hatame still held a tie to it, and so she was anchored...for now.
Her energy swelled, temporarily swallowing up his magick as well. And in that moment, he was released, set adrift for one fleeting instant in time...

...Before everything came crashing down.

The deceased Drygan's energy poured forth, severing the strange confinement the curse had placed on her indominatable soul. She flooded into his body, heart, and soul in one rush.
Freedom like none other...

Still flowing within him, Sakkata could tell he had taken some heavy damage. She sought to sooth and heal that which she could with her pure energy, before asking him to do what needed to be done.

Alright Hatame, it is only your connection to my soul, via that hair, that is keeping me here. We've got a pretty intense ritual to preform, so I hope you're ready for it.
There was a brief pause.
Don't die on me now, alright?

Something was different. If his body hadn't been so damaged, he would have been able to pin-point the change immediately. Sakkata...he could feel an energy that he just instinctively knew was hers flowing within him, flowing freely through him now after suddenly coming to him in a rush, but there was something else...

And then through his exhausted daze it hit him. His magic. He'd released it. When that swell of energy had swept through him, he'd let go. It had been purely accidental, but...it had happened, regardless of how he had clung to it.

And he wasn't holding it now.

And the fatal attack he had been anticipating hadn't come.

There had been no change whatsoever...nothing had happened. If anything, he felt slightly soothed, felt a little less pain.

For a moment, he was frozen with shock, unmoving, not daring to move or even breathe lest that undo what had been done. Or...what had been undone? Or...

He gave himself a slight shake. No, couldn't get his hopes up yet. It might just be temporary, might just be dulled from Sakkata's sheer energy. Whatever the case...he'd find out later, he supposed. He couldn't let himself get swept up in wonder now...there'd be a later. One way or another.

Shakily wiping some of the blood from his chin with the back of his handâ€"no new blood...the bleeding from within seemed to have stopped, since no new blood filled his mouthâ€"he nodded, even though he didn't know that she could see. "I'm...I'm ready...I'm not going anywhere...we'll do this..."

--

Good.

They were going to do this. Unfortunately, Sakkata had never actually preformed this particular ritual before. Sure, she knew how to do it from scrolls and the like, but doing it and reading about it are two different things.

Alright Hatame. For the most part I'll be doing the ritual through you. Only at the end will you have to take over. Just listen to what I tell you, and we'll do fine.

Well, she hoped they'd be fine anyway. As long as nothing went wrong...

First, I'm going to need you to move Torr's corpse and place my body in his blood. Weird, I know. But necissary.

Aw hell, her body was naked wasn't it? If Hatame said ONE WORD about that when she was alive again...
Well, you can guess what would happen then.

--

That was comforting to know, that Sakkata would be the one in charge, for the most part, and that knowledge calmed him slightly. After all...he hadn't the slighest idea what to do. And that last thing he wanted was to screw something up.

The first step was simple enough.

"Alright..." Forcing himself to rise, a task that was a bit easier now that some of the pain had been eased away, he made his way slowly to Torr's corpse, and rather roughly began to heave the mangled body out of the way, leaving a pool of blood behind. It wasn't exactly heavy, with the absense of blood and so many organs, but it was still a bit of an effort in his state. And, besides...it wasn't like he cared to preserve the body's condition, anyway. Torr deserved no such honor.

Setting it aside, and yet keeping it close by in case it was needed later for any reason, he then went to retrieve Sakkata's body. And with her, he was far more gentle, and determined to carry her. It took a little longer to get her there, because of his overall stubborness, but he was eventually able to lay her carefully in the pool of blood, dropping to his knees beside her. "Done."

--

Sakkata's energy waited patiently. When he announced he was finished, Sakkata felt a bit of relief wash into her. First task, done.

Sakkata's body lay limp and degraded in the pool of blood, still missing hair, ears and tail.
That would be a problem.

Alright, I need you to bring my tail over and lay it next to me. And any of my hair you can find, NOT including the piece around your finger.

She was pretty confident all would be renewed when the ritual was over, but she couldn't be entirely sure. Damn it...

Once that's done, all you need to do is...

She realized this would sound very, very strange.

Ah, you're going to have to lay down next to me, in the blood. Just bare with me here Hatame.

--

"And I...was hoping you'd...forget the tail..." Hatame remarked as he rose unsteadily, a weak attempt at humor even in this situation. But he was feeling calmer now. Now that he was actually doing something, now that he had hope that all would be wellâ€"or...at least...mostâ€"he could relax a little. Only a little. Which just meant he wasn't quite as stressed out anymore.

Keeping busy was a good way to settle down frayed nerves.

Gathering up her tail, and whatever else he could find that belonged to her, he raised an eyebrow slightly at the next set of instructions. But that was it. It was odd, true, but...well, if she asked it of him, he'd do it. If it had to be done, he'd do it. Simple as that.

Laying down the collected...ah...items around her, he took a deep breath and slowly, carefully, laid down in the blood. And tried hard not to cringe. It was still slightly warm and...urk...

He was in no was quesy. Usually. But...drinking blood, now laying in blood...

Good Gods, this had to take the cake for the strangest thing he had ever done in his life.

"You owe...me big...for this..." he muttered, though his tone was slightly teasing.

--

Sakkata's disembodied voice laughed, her energy sending a tingling sensation throughout Hatame's sensitive nerves.

Oh shut up. I'm sure you'll never let me forget I owe you, either.

However, Sakkata really held no qualms about paying him back for this. He'd earned it, whatever it was.
Er...well...baring some things...

Ok, this next part is all me. It may feel strange, but just lay still and you'll be fine. Just follow my directions. Near the end, you'll feel my energy leave you, and at that point you'll have to quickly take off the strand of my hair from your finger and put it in the blood.

Right. Ok. Time to get going...
Oh boy, hopefully she hadn't forgotten any of the ritual...

Sakkata's power began to well up in Hatame again, flooding his systems in pure energy. The blood began to heat up around Hatame, to the point where it was actually steaming but not yet boiling.
And then, as if upon it's own accord, the blood began to defy gravity and made it's way up Sakkata's stationary form. In no time at all she was completely covered in the blood, forming a crimson layer over her normally blue skin.

Hold your breath, Hatame.

She warned, just as the steaming hot blood, which was actually not as scalding as one would imagine, began to flow over Hatame as well, soon coming up towards his face to cover it entirely.

--

He cracked a tired grin at her statement. Purely Sakkata. Only she could be so cool and nonchalant in this type of situation...

Listening to her next set of instructions, he nodded in understanding, and forced himself to relax a little moreâ€"which was quite the challenge, considering he was laying in a pool of blood right next to a corpse. Well...that sounded easy enough. This didn't seem quite as complicated as he would have imagined. Of course, the mind did tend to conjure up scenarios that were far worse than the actual truth. That probably had something to do with it.

"Got it..." He quickly placed his hands together, just to be prepared.

And then he felt Sakkata's power well up in him, and the blood began to heat, then steam. A hot spring. Yeah...if he thought of it as a hot spring, and not blood, it wasn't so bad...

And then the blood began to crawl up Sakkata's body, covering her completely. And soon it began to do the same to him. Alright...so the hot spring analogy didn't really work anymore...

Holding perfectly still, he quickly did as he was told, holding his breath and closing his eyes, and trying not to think of what was really covering his face. Instead, he quickly shifted his focus to within, feeling for Sakkata's energy. Once it started to leave, he had to...damn, this was so weird...

--

She hoped this would finish quickly, so that Hatame wouldn't suffocate or something. That would be bad...
The blood was doing more than just covering the two of them up. It was transferring energy, power, and magick to Sakkata's corpse, as well as renewing her body. Good, it was working so far.

Suddenly, Sakkata's tail trashed. It then thrashed again, and again.
Soon, it was wiggling all over the place, overloaded with energy. It was desperately trying to find the stump it once was attatched to, squirming all over the place like a grotesque snake.

If something starts wiggling on you, don't freak out. It's my tail.

Indeed, her rogue tail did thrash Hatame a few times, before finally finding it's place and re-attaching. Even her hair was beginning to squirm, moving to her head and melding back in. The hair on Hatame's finger tugged, trying to get back to Sakkata as well, but the knot holding it did not permit such movement.
Finally, Sakkata's energy began to drain out of Hatame, flowing into the blood and eventually back into her own body.

Now Hatame!

--

Thank Gods Sakkata gave Hatame that warning, otherwise he might have indeed lost the breath he was holding. It was unnerving enough being buried under hot blood. Being thrashed by some squirming object he couldn't see...that was even more so.

You're doing that on purpose, aren't you? he couldn't help but think wryly. He wouldn't put it past her.

All around him, he could feel things moving, an odd feeling indeed. And he, too, was beginning to hope this would be over soon. After all, he couldn't hold his breath forever, and it was by now starting to get uncomfortable...

The hair around his finger began to move, tugging against him...and then came Sakkata's voice again, and at the same time, he suddenly felt it, felt her energy begin to drain. And it was only then that he allowed himself to move, but only to quickly remove the hair and plunge it into the blood, where he released it.

It was almost done...right? Sakkata was almost back...

--

As the final hair hit the blood, a drastic change occured. The crimson liquid bleached into complete white, and for a moment was unbearably hot, then incredibly cold.
And then...
It was gone.

Hatame was free to breath again, no longer coated with crimson. And, as a perk, he would find his body completely renewed.
As Sakkata's was. Hair, ears, tail, everything was as it should be.
Well, except for the fact she was stiff as stone still. There was no evidence of breathing, nor of any real life at all.
None at all...

Opening his eyes in amazement and releasing his held breath as, quite suddenly, he was released from that tomb of blood, he blinked in surprise, for a moment stunned. It was...gone? Everything was gone...not a trace of blood remaining. And, oddly, he felt renewedâ€"if slightly chilled from when that heated liquid had so suddenly turned coldâ€"andâ€"

Sakkata!

He sat up abruptly, turning suddenly to look at the form that was laying beside him, and relief washed over him. She was better. Seeing her as she was now was almost unreal, renewed as she was. After all...the last time he'd seen her, she'd been...well...but now...it was a relief. Now, she was....

She wasn't breathing.

"Sakkata!"

Fear instantly replaced relief. She was renewed, but she wasn't breathing. Dammit! What was going on!? Wasn't the spell supposed to correct everything!? Moving quickly, he placed his hands on her shoulders and shook her, a quick but careful motion. "Sakkata!?" What if they'd done something wrong...what if something went wrong...or... "Sakkata! Wake up! The spell's over, you're okay now! Come on, Sakkata, don't quit now!"

--

Sakkata's limp form was chilled from death, though she flopped limply as he shook her. Any one coming upon this scene might turn right around and leave, seeing as how Hatame was currently thrashing about a naked female corpse.
Just a tad weird...

"Stop..shaking..me..." The command was weak, but noticable. Eyes clenched against the shaking, Sakkata groaned lightly and rigidly shifted. A violent bought of coughs rattled her for a moment as her lungs regained function, and then she was still again.
"Ugh..."
Cracking one eye open against the failing daylight, Sakkata waited for her blurred vision to focus in on Hatame's face.
A very weak grin appeared.
"Hey."

--

Weird didn't even begin to cover it.

But for all Hatame noticed, she might as well have been fully clothed. All that mattered now was that she live...

Had the circumstances been different, though, had they not just been to hell and back, had Sakkata not been dead...yeah...he would have noticed, to say the very least. But, for once, he currently had other things on his mind.

When, after what seemed like forever, Sakkata finally, but weakly, spoke, Hatame could have wilted right then and there with relief, and the tension that had taken him noticeably receded, even when violent coughs ripped through her. They sounded bad, but they didn't worry him; coughing meant she was drawing in air, that her lungs were working properly. She was alive...something he had never believed possible. Hell, he had half-doubted it even during the ritual! But, here she was...and it was more than he could have asked for.

Shifting slightly so he was sitting back on his heels as opposed to leaning over her, he watched over her as she recovered, until finally her coughs ebbed and she cracked open one eye. Meeting her gaze, he grinned back at her, tiredly but genuinely. "Hey, sleepy-head...welcome back. Heh...think you've given me enough white hairs, yet?" he asked her, lightly teasing.

--

None of her major muscles were working just yet, so she had little choice but to lay limp where she was, practically in Hatame's lap. Interesting place to be, considering how their relationship usually was.
Man...she felt horrible...

And she had a right to be. Images of what degrading and down-right horrid things that had happened to her at Torr's hand flashed into her rattled mind. Shutting her eyes tight, she tried to push the much too recent memories away. She had been violated in more ways than she thought possible...
Damn Torr's deathless soul to Hell.

Hatame's tired voice brought her back, and this time both eyes managed to crack open and slowly focus on him. She snickered weakly, trying to smirk. "You...had plenty to begin with...what's...a few more, eh?" She commented, glancing at his white bangs.

A breeze brushed across the stained earth, making the serene trees sway. Sakkata shivered then, her lack of clothing and warmth evident.
"Uugh..." Man she felt horrid...and cold...and degraded...and...and...grateful...
"Thanks Hatame. Really."

--

Hatame tried to keep on his usual optimistic air, for Sakkata's sake, but it was tough, and he smiled only half-heartedly at her own attempted smirk. He was happy...happy beyond words and belief that she was alive, but...but there was so much more to this whole ordeal. They'd succeeded, all of them...but now Terri was dead...and...and though Sakkata's body was healed, it was hard for him to forget the state that she had been found in. And if he couldn't push that image from his mind, he could only imagine what it must be like on Sakkata's end.

Her body was healed, but...emotional wounds cut deeper and left scars that could stand out vividly long after the physical ones faded.

And that was obvious on Sakkata. She looked miserable, something he had never seen from her before. And she had every right to be. Sakkata, who was always so strong...it was scary, really. Never had he expected to see her in this kind of condition...damn...

And what was worse...once again, there was nothing he could do to make it better.

Torr got off way too easy. He didn't deserve to die so painlessly.

He felt the shiver run through her as a breeze washed over the area, and instinctively he put his arms around her gingerly and rubbed her shoulders, as though to help warm her. "You don't have to thank me, Sakki..." he told her seriously. "I'd do it again. Now...you're freezin'. Just sit tight a sec, alright?"

Rising to his feet, he made his way across the area, then stooped and picked something up. Making his way back, he settled back down next to her and draped his overcoat around her shoulders. It was pretty beat up, with dirt and blood, both Sakkata's and his, soiling it, and it was torn in the back where her claws had once dug into him, but it was fairly long...and it was something.

--

Sakkata was thankful for the feeble attempt to warm her, though she noticed how ginger he was being with her. It could be due to a few different factors; one being the fact she had just been dead, two that she seemed to be in pain, or three because...well....he didn't want to get beat?
She wished none of them were true. She could use a bit of comforting right now...

Laying limp on the earth as Hatame left to get something, Sakkata stared up at the sky. No...she did have to thank him. Again and again and again. He had risked so much to save her, and nearly killed himself. And Terri...she had given the ultimate sacrifice...
One she never thought, nor wanted, anyone to give for her.
But unlike her own death, Terri's was perminant. There was no anchor for her soul, and so it was free to travel to wherever it was bastard souls like a Drygan's go.

Suddenly covered, Sakkata glanced at the over coat a moment before grinning. Her eyes were a bit more open now, and it seemed she was regaining some use in her neglected muscles.
"Thanks again Hatame." She said softly, before murmuring in the tongue of dragons.

Slowly then, her arm shifted along the dusty earth and slender fingers grabbed hold of the cloth of his pants. She would have liked to hold onto something a bit more substantial, but with her eyes closed out of sheer exhaustion, it was the best she could do.
Despite the jacket, Sakkata was shivering consistantly now. Whether it was from the cold, or pure emotion however, was unclear. What was clear was that she was clutching his pant leg rather tightly, almost as if she was holding it for comfort.

--

It was none of those reasons, really. In all actuality, he was simply afraid, but not for himself. Torr had...well, it was damn obvious what Torr had done to her. The bastard had violated her in every damn way possible, and though Hatame wanted to comfort her, more than anything...he also didn't want to scare her. After what had happened...he wouldn't blame her if she recoiled from a man's touch, no matter how well meaning and innocent, and he just didn't want her to fear or distrust him.

She was un such an uncharacteristically sensitive, fragile, state...he just didn't want to hurt her.

And yet...

She was shivering so badly now, and the manner in which she suddenly gripped the fabric of his pants, so tightly, as though she needed something to hold onto...it pained him. If Gryphons were intuned to anything, it was body language, social as his kind were. He didn't think it was just the cold that was causing her tremors.

He couldn't stand it anymore. She was cold. She was scared. She was vulnerable. If she recoiled, he could always stop...but he just couldn't sit by and do nothing, or at least not try. This was the best he knew. "Sakkata..." Sliding closer to her, he put his arms around her and drew her, carefully, up off the ground and close to his body. "It's okay..." He was gentle in his touch as he just held her, one hand stroking her hair and back slowly, soothingly. And yet, he was also firm. He wanted her to feel safe...or, at least, as safe as he could make her feel under the circumstances. He'd protect her as well as he could.

"It's okay...you don't have to be strong all the time..."

--

One could not blame Sakkata for the sudden onslaught of emotion. She had never had to face anything like it before, and for once, was at a complete loss of what to do. She didn't know how to defend herself from an attack that coiled around her very heart and soul. Emotions ran strong in Drygans, but they were usually of anger or hatred. Such trembling feelings of violation and fear were something she could not have prepared herself for.
And she didn't know how to make it all go away.

But she didn't have to know, because Hatame did. She glanced briefly at him as she heard her name, but was then being lifted off the hard ground and pulled close to him. He was warm, and comforting, and she could find no reason not to accept it.
Everything about him right then was soothing and safe, and exactly what she needed. For once, she did not retort against his closeness, nor did she mind the stroking of long hair and chilled back.

"It's okay...you don't have to be strong all the time..."

The soft, kind words met her sensitive ears, and were so true they struck a chord in her. Eyes shut, heavy tears began to fall down her cheeks, the cleansing of the soul.
Forcing neglected muscles to work, Sakkata wrapped her arms around Hatame's midsection and huddled close, crying silently as she needed to.
And Hatame had just forged a bond with the most loyal creature, that would never be broken as long as Sakkata held breath in her. She would never forget it.

Never.

--

Hatame held her close as she cried silently, silent himself save for an occasional soft, reassuring murmur, his hand still gently stroking her hair and back, even as her own arms went around his middle to draw him closer rather than push him away...which oddly did not surprise him, even considering how their relationship generally was. Not once did he try and encourage her to stay her tears; he would hold her for as long as she needed, and even longer. This was good for her...he understood and knew that. What she had gone through, what she'd experienced...it just wasn't something you kept bottled up inside, otherwise it would tear you apart from within, where you were most vulnerable and weak.

That she was able to open up like this to him, that she was able to trust him like this, so fully...he was glad, in a bittersweet sense. That was the best he was able to describe it. It must be so hard for her...he only wished he could do more for her.

He only wished she never had to go through that torment to begin with.

"Take as long as you need..." he told her quietly, and without even really realizing it, brushed a soft kiss lightly over each closed eye, brushing away the flowing tears. They were chaste kisses, innocent, but nonetheless genuine in their meaning. He cared about her, as if that wasn't already obvious...and he hated to see her hurt...especially since he'd never seen her hurt, before. He'd do anything to ease that pain, even if it would make only the slightest difference.

"I'm here..."

--

Sakkata did not question Hatame's change from perverted, annoying, masochistic freak to this oddly kind and caring individual. It was a welcome change, and a much needed one.
So she held close to him, glad for the comforting embrace, even if it was coming from Hatame. As a matter of fact, it was all the more comforting because it was Hatame. The first person she had really bonded with in a long time.

She was most surprised by the strange, soft kisses on her eyelids. Both light amber eyes opened as soon as his lips had been removed, and she watched him for a moment. That had been the most unexpected thing he had ever done around her. Or to her for that matter.
As if by instinct, her tail had wrapped around the first available appendege of Hatame's, which happened to be his leg. A small grin finally formed, and she chuckled softly.
"Yeah, I know. Thank you Hatame. Honestly."

--

A slow smile formed on his lips as he watched her, and as he felt her tail curl about his leg, even though his eyes still expressed sincere concern for her...and heavy exhaustion, both physical and emotional. But the latter wasn't important, and he didn't mind it, really. Not now, at least. Holding Sakkata like this had been meant solely to comfort her, to support her, but, oddly enough, it was having a similar effect on him.

She was, without a doubt, the first person he had truly bonded with since being exiled to this world. And the first person in his life he would ever willingly die for, if it ever came to that...as it almost had. Such dedication was a rarity among his kindâ€"even among loversâ€"a race born into a world where, in many cases, merely surviving meant everything. Loyalty and sacrifice had long since lost its value there...

Among most, that is.

Resting his head lightly against hers, he absently pulled at the overcoat covering her, one-handedly arranging it so it covered her a little better. The sky was growing darker around them as the sunlight ebbed, and with the absense of light, the air was starting to grow even cooler, so even he could feel it's chill; he didn't want her to get cold. "You're welcome. You don't have to thank me, though..." he repeated quietly. It was enough that she was here, now.

For a few moments, he was quiet, green eyes closed. And then he spoke up again. "I should probably be thanking you..."

But he didn't expand upon the statement. Instead, he raised his head and looked at her again, head tilted slightly. "How you feeling?"

--

Sakkata could read the fatigue in his eyes, and frowned softly. He really had sacrificed alot to save her...he had nearly died for her. And for some reason, the thought of anyone doing that for her surprised the Drygan. Especially Hatame...hell, she beat the crap out of him multiple times a day.
Well...then again...if she died, he wouldn't exactly have anyone to pester, would he?
She grinned softly at the thought.

He again surprised her by resting his forehead against hers, and a few rapid blinks accompanied the action. But it quickly fell into place as just feeling...right for the moment.
She hugged him a bit closer as he spoke, shaking her head weakly.
"No Hatame, I do need to thank you. You have no idea how much I need to thank you." She sighed softly at the end, shutting her eyes for a tired moment.
His next soft statement caught her attention, and she looked up at him as he pulled his head back.
"What do you mean by that? Thank me for what?" She would answer his question later. At the moment, she could think of nothing really that Hatame should be thanking him for...
She had nearly killed him! Although, there was a trick to that...she had purposefully cast the temporary spell, and no joke, hidden the special hairs within their own deliberately.
Interesting, no?

--

He smiled softly and shook his head at her words, but didn't say anything. No...he hadn't done any of that for thanks, nor with the slightest thought of gaining anything in return. He'd done it for her, plain and simple. That she was alive now, and that he was alive to see that, was reward enough. Hell...he still couldn't figure out how he had survived, exactly, either, but...he was too tired, and had too many other things on his mind, to give it much thought. Besides, much of the stuff that had happened prior to the blood ritual was a blur...not that he really wanted to remember all of it.

But he really did appreciate her words... "You're here...that's enough," he murmured sleepily after a moment, and he could see the tiredness she, too, was feeling. And rightly so...

And then, it was his turn to blink in surprise at her question. Well...he had been pretty vague...

It didn't take much thought at all before he answered. "For...well, for trusting me, for one..." he began slowly, and grinned awkwardly. He wasn't very good at explaining this sort of thing. "Heh...I know I never really gave you much reason to do so, and...well, it means a lot. Really. And for...being you. And being the first person to give a damn...y'know?" He gave a quiet laugh, but again made no effort to explain further. He didn't really know how to, honestly.

Shifting slightly, he brushed some hair back from her face and looked at her again. The sky was swiftly blackening, cloudless and clear...it was going to be a cold night, it seemed. "Now...how you feeling? You look exhausted...you can sleep if you like...just close your eyes. I'll be here..." he told her gently.

Glancing around the area briefly as a breeze chilled him, it also occured to him that they should probably move elsewhere. Not only were they out in the open, exposed to the elements, but, well...the area itself was rather...haunting, considering what had happened...

He didn't think either factor would be good for Sakkata's spirit, which needed so much healing. Nor for his own.

--

Sakkata felt the first twinge of annoyance as Hatame again refused her thanks. Yep, she'd felt that emotion plenty of times around Hatame. And so, instead of actually bothering her, it only brought a smile to her face.
Still her good ol' Hatame...if just a bit more tired and sentimental.
She could deal with that.

His answer did not surprise her, strangely. It just seemed...natural to say. Or maybe it was because she felt the same way...
"I guess a 'ditto' is in order." She grinned softly. "Never thought anyone would care enough to actually give their life for me, or come close to doing so. And I'm also grateful you were trusting enough to go through that weird ass ritual for me." The grin was a momentary weak smirk, before falling back to her tired smile.
"And for being you." However much of a jackass he sometimes was...

Without really thinking about it, Sakkata curled closer to Hatame's comfort and warmth as the night came to a chill. She was already drifting off as he assured her she could sleep safely. As if she had any doubts.
Sleep pulling her away from the waking world, Sakkata had just enough coherency to respond.
"Yes, I know..."
Within moments she was in the near-dead slumber of one completely exhausted, both mind, body, and soul.

--

Hatame smiled appreciatively at her words, and they didn't surprise him, either. Then again, after being around her, after what had happened since he reunited with her...well, honestly, he didn't think anything could surprise him anymore. But, then...maybe that was just because her response felt so natural. Just like everything else did, at the moment. Really odd, indeed...but he wasn't about to question it. "Thanks, Sakki," he told her quietly, sleepily, but honestly.

As Sakkata cuddled closer and, soon after, fell asleep, Hatame felt sleep tug heavily at his own eyelids, and it was very tempting to give in, to fall asleep right then and there. He really didn't want to move, even as it grew cooler. And he didn't want to sleep, either, though he was exhausted; he wanted to stay awake, just in case Sakkata needed something, because likely he'd sleep deep tonight. But he knew he should...

Trying his best not to jostle Sakkata, he lifted her carefully as he rose slowly to his feet. Aside from sheer exhaustion, he was vaguely surprised to find he otherwise, physically, felt fineâ€"even if one leg felt half asleep from staying in that position for so long. Hrm. That meant something, but his mind wasn't about to register it at this moment.

He made his way to an only a few yards, a place he had sighted when he first suggested Sakkata rest. It wasn't anything special, really; it just had a bit more foliage, trees, and rocks than where they had been, offering a bit more cover, and at least a buffer against the chill breezes. It'd do for the night...

Settling down on the grass with his back against a tree, Hatame cuddled Sakkata close to him...

And, despite himself, it wasn't long after that he had drifted off into the deep of sleep.

--

As the morning broke over the horizon, Sakkata woke. She was stiff, but alive.
Alive.
All thanks to Hatame and Terri...

Both pale amber eyes opened, and of course the first thing she saw was a sleeping Hatame. She grinned faintly, and realized she was still all cuddled and twisted around him in a most uncharacteristic fashion.
Yeeeah...better get out of this particular position before he could wake up and crack some crude comment about it...

With surprising felxibility and grace, Sakkata somehow managed to slide out of Hatame's grasp without jarring him or loosing the all-too-important jacket. She did NOT want to be walking around stark naked. Especially not around Hatame.

Shuffling across the battle-scarred earth, Sakkata soon came upon Terri's cold corpse. Making sure the jacket was securely draped about her shoulders, Sakkata knelt and placed both hands over Terri's form.
"Thank you my sister. May the Gods of both man and dragon be merciful upon your bastard soul."
She took a deep breath.
"Go in peace Terri. I'm going to miss you..."
With that, she drew both brows together and brought forth her power over flire, making sure it was hot enough to do the job.
Then, in one burst of blue-white flame, Terri's body was incinerated.

Sakkata continued to kneel there, staring at the ashes blankly. Why...why did Terri give her life like that? It seemed...so...unfair...
The Chosen was surprised when a few heavy tears landed on her limp hands, having dropped from her own eyes.
Crying...great, now she was crying...

"DAMN IT!!"

--

Hatame slept soundly for a little bit even after Sakkata got up, only shifting slightly as he felt the sudden absence of her warmth and weight. But, that was it. He had been exhausted, and this was his first true restâ€"well, stress-free restâ€"in the last few days.

It was the sunlight that finally woke him as it began beating down through the trees and glaring on his face, and his eyes clenched shut as he tried to avoid it for as long as possible. But, that soon became an impossiblility, and he was finally forced to admit defeat. Slowly opening his eyes, he blinked groggily as his eyes adjusted to the light, and stretched stiff limbs. Ugh. Human bodies were way too soft, not at all meant for sleeping on the ground, it seemed...wait...

It suddenly dawned on his half-awake mind that Sakkata was missing, and he wasn't quite sure whether he should be amused or concerned by that fact. They had both drifted off together in each other's arms, hadn't they? Heh, yeah, they'd both been pretty messed up. So either Sakkata had gotten up before him so as not to awaken like thatâ€"a typical Sakkata thing; she was so easily embarrassedâ€"or...something else...the latter option being the one which he was concerned about...which he knew they'd both have to deal with...

His question was answered soon enough.

"DAMN IT!!"

Rising to his feet, he made his way across the area, soon coming to the place where Sakkata now knelt. The area where Terri's body had once been. Moving slower now, uncertainly, he walked closer, and as he did, he thought he saw...something charred. Ash.

He winced slightly, remembering that bit from the day before about Drygans and cremation. Not that the act itself bothered him, but...well, the fact Terri was dead, obviously, did. He hadn't really known her. Only for those few days had he. But, still...

She'd shown so much dedication, and done so much, for Sakkata and him. And she'd cared deeply for Sakkata...in that, they'd been connected in a way.

And somehow, he still couldn't help but feel that, if he'd only known how to heal, things might have been a little different. But...Black Gryphons couldn't heal. They just weren't meant to...

He paused a little ways behind Sakkata, and didn't come any closer. Last night, Sakkata's grief had been different than it was now; she'd needed to be held. But now...he just wasn't too sure of what to do. She might need her space...

--

Sakkata's sensitive hearing easily picked up on Hatame's approach, though she was in no condition to confront him at the moment. The heavy crying continued, though it was surprisingly silent. Her shoulders shook with it, but the outpouring was needed.
The clensing was needed.

Finally, Sakkata stood and held the jacket tighter about her form. The sharp winds that buffeted the place quickly dried the tear trails on her cheeks, and after a few empty moments she turned and shuffled back towards Hatame.
She stared blankly at him for a moment, a haunted look in her eyes. Finally the void began to fill back in, her regular personality returning.
"Good morning? You look stiff."

--

Hatame waited patiently as she cried, keeping his distance, allowing her to have her space and take her time. For a few moments, he watched on sadly, but then he finally averted his eyes and took to studying the surrounding area with a bit more interest than he actually felt, purposely avoiding the area where Torr's body now lay. No, it wasn't fair, by any stretch of the word, that so much hurt should come from this...and even though Hatame had learned early on that such was life, it didn't mean he had to like it. Nor accept it so easily.

He was stubborn like that.

Hearing Sakkata's shuffling approach, he turned back to face her, concern blossoming as he looked at her, maybe even a little fear. That was one expression he'd never thought she'd wear; it was oddly eerie coming from her...

He couldn't help but feel relief as that haunted, empty look finally began to fill, and when she spoke, he was equally relieved to recognize that usual Sakkata spark; another step toward healing. Good.

Torr had taken too much from Sakkata as it was. There was no way he was gonna take her spirit, too.

"Mornin' to you, too. And yeah...I am," he told her, stretching his arms over his head. "Can't say I minded the sleeping arrangements, though. Erm...anyway..." He coughed slightly. Yep, seemed his own typical nature was returning, as well, even if it was a toned down version. "How you doing?"

--

As if his being stiff wasn't obvious from just looking at him. He didn't look refreshed at all, to say the least. She felt surprisingly good, considering...
Well, she didn't want to think about it. She felt alive, and that was all that mattered right now. The rest she would have to deal with some other time.

Oh for the love of...that was Hatame all right! At first her usual disgruntled look came to her face, and it seemed as though she were gearing up to punch him dead in the face for that one. She couldn't help being naked! That jerk...!

Out of the blue, Sakkata suddenly started laughing. It was a surprisingly rich and cheerful sound, and it was no short lived episode. Tears actually gathered at the edges of her eyes, and, still giggling softly, she dashed them away.
"Hee...hehehe...it's good to hear your much-too-suggestive comments Hatame. I remember thinking how much I would miss those when I died...you sick bastard."
And, without missing a beat, Sakkata shoved her arms through the sleeves of the jacket and gave Hatame a warm hug. It was so out of characteristic for her, that even Sakkata was a bit surprised at her actions. Man, what had brought that on?
And why hadn't she let go yet???

Trying to refrain from laughing, an amused grin came across Hatame's face at Sakkata's disgruntled expression, an expression he knew all too well, in addition to what came with it. But, hey, that reaction answered his question well enough! Obviously, she was feeling well enough to beat him! In Sakkata's case, that was a good sign, and, strangely enough, a welcome sign. Hell, to think he'd actually missed this! Odd.

He was bracing himself against the inevitable punch when, to his surprise, Sakkata started...laughing? And not lightly, either! She was giggling, even! Blinking, Hatame looked back over at her, and saw her wiping away laughter-induced tears. Wow...that was random...

Suddenly, he laughed. Ohhhh! Right! Drygan mood-swings. Heh, how he'd missed those, too!

Chuckling at her comments, he shook his head. Sick bastard? Heh heh...that was his Sakki, alright! "Miss them!? Ahaha, well, I guess it's not so...so..." He trailed off, completely losing his train of thought as, yet again, Sakkata surprised him, this time in a less explainable way, by embracing him in a warm hug. And not a quick little warm hug, either. She didn't let go.

Not that he minded, by any means. He wasn't one to complain!

For a moment, all he could do was stare at her in surprise. Erm...maybe she wasn't alright. But, finally, he was able to overcome the initial shock enough to bring his arms around to embrace her back, just as warmly. "Yeah, Sakki, I'd be lost without you, you know. Who would I have to harrass? Hell, I was actually starting to miss your little love-taps..." He laughed softly, still holding on gently. "...Can't say I don't prefer this, though..." he added wryly.

--

Still holding him tight, soft, silent tears were falling Sakkata had no control over. She was not sure whether they were happy tears, or sad ones, but she did not attempt to check their flow. They felt good inside, cleansing really.
She felt the laughter bubble out of her at Hatame’s characteristic comments. The first part was actually rather sweet, but after that, he just fell back into his pain-seeking self.
She was surprised to find herself glad that he was returning the hug, unable to wipe the grin off her face.
“You know, if I wasn’t so busy hugging you, I’d hurt you right now. She growled, before chuckling yet again. Her head shook against his chest as she chuckled. “Love taps my ass... She muttered then, too amused by Hatame’s odd antics. She’d never understand him, but that was the beauty of it, she guessed.
He’d always keep her guessing, and always be full of his...odd surprises.

Finally, Sakkata became a bit embarrassed with the whole situation, realizing she was wearing nothing more than his jacket. A flush appeared on her blue cheeks, and she began to try and wiggle away from him.
“Alright, mushy moment is over. Lemme go.

--

He could feel her tears dampen his shirt, even if she made no sound or movements to show she was crying, and he rubbed her back in a circular, soothing motion, once again taken slightly aback by the sudden outpour of emotion, whether good or bad. Actually, come to think of it, any outpour of emotion was good, wasn't it? It was understandable...he didn't blame her a bit. She'd lost so much, and she needed the healing that came with mourning. It was still surprising, though, to see Sakkata in such an emotional state. And yet, at the same time, it was also a comfort, in an odd, unexplainable way.

But it was also a relief to hear her laughter again, his comments having attained their desired effect. Laughter was the best medicine, right? That's what everyone said, and he knew it himself to be true. That's what got him through all the dark times in his life, after all. And, prior to meeting Sakkata, there'd been a lot of those.

"I know you'd hurt meâ€"that's why I'm hugging you so tightly, y'know," he teased, a grin once again forming as he firmed up his embrace a little just to accentuate the point. Of course, that wasn't the real reason for the embrace; he was likely hugging her for the same reasons she was hugging him, whatever those reasons might be. He wasn't about to attempt an analysis. Like he would have, anyway. "Though, in retrospect, I might enjoy it..."

Soon enough, though, their little "moment" faded as suddenly Sakkata began to try and wiggle her way away, and he recognized a blush on her cheeks. "Aww, already? But you're so cuddly..." he quipped, releasing her with exaggerated reluctance. Yep, his typical, easily embarrassed Sakki was returning.

And, of course, he found her embarrassment amusing, especially given the fact that she was wearing a heckuvalot more than she was when Terri and he rescued her. Compared to that, she was modestly dressed, so she really didn't have anything left to be embarrassed about in that respect, not that she had a reason to be bashful about that to begin with. But these were also the thoughts of Hatame, someone who rarely, if ever, suffered from embarrassment. It took a lot to make him blush.

Of course, he decided that, at this moment, it was probably best to keep his mouth shut about that. He couldn't assault her all at once with too many little remarks.

--

Sakkata was quite relieved that Hatame had indeed released her when she had started wiggling away. And she would let that cuddly comment slide, for now.
She was easily embarrassed, that was true, but it seemed Hatame had a real knack for bringing the trait out and causing her to outright blush. Damn him for that...she hated being embarrassed.
Standing out of his reach now, Sakkata kept the jacket tight about her. It hung low enough to cover everything that needed to be covered, and she was quite happy for that. Of course, Drygans weren’t known to be conservative dressers, as one could tell, but she didn’t want to be buck-naked in front of Hatame if she could help it. Yeah, that just wouldn’t be a good idea.
“Do you, ah, think you could go into town and get me some new clothes? I don’t want to be stuck walking around in nothing but your jacket any longer than I have to. She paused but quickly added. “Don’t you say a word, not one thing from that twisted mind of yours aside from a ‘yes I’ll go’, or a ‘no I won’t go’.
Maybe she was learning to expect his dirty little comments at last. Of course, he was just too damn unpredictable half the time to do much about them anyway...
She huddled into the jacket a bit more, angered to find she hadn’t quite stopped blushing just yet. After all, she was still standing in just his jacket right in front of him. Not to mention she couldn’t help that incredibly embarrassing comment he had made on her tail back in the village...things like that just weren’t easily shaken off. At least, not for a Drygan.
Gods, what had he been thinking when he said that???

--

Hatame opened his mouth to speak, but then closed it again when Sakkata cut him off in anticipation of one of his infamous comments, and he smirked at her words, trying hard not to chuckle. Heh...wow...she really didn't trust him in that department, did she? Which made the situation all the more amusing, since for once he hadn't been about to make one of his infamous comments, but had actually been about to clue her into the idea that she could use the little clasps available on the coat to keep it closed as opposed to holding it closed, if she hadn't noticed them. And it didn't look like she had. They were pretty easy to miss.

Well...alright. So he probably would have included one of his "twisted" comments mixed in with that bit of knowledge, but...that was beside the point!

Oh well! All she wanted was a "yes, I'll go" or "no, I won't go", so that's what she'd get.

Smiling with not so hidden, not so innocent amusement, he nodded. "Yes, I'll go," he answered. "Ma'am."

However...there was something else that dawned on him as soon as he agreed. Town, huh? Wait...erm...did Sakkata know exactly how far away from town they were? He wasn't quite sure of how much distance he and Terri had coveredâ€"especially not when she, uh, carried him...she was fast!â€"but town certainly wasn't a quick stroll away. Sakkata probably wasn't aware of that...she had been unconscious, he was guessing. Or...yeah.

"Ah...dearest? D'ya know how far away 'town' is, exactly...?" he asked. "I'd go, but...you might be out here a while. It's kinda far away. You should come, too..." He tilted his head to the side slightly. "Kinda far away" was a bit of an understatement. For all he and Terri's frantic traveling, it had taken them at least two days to get from the village to where they were now.

--

Sakkata was surprised he actually listened to her. Both eyebrows arched lightly to show off the emotion. “Wow, I’m impressed. You actually managed to restrain yourself. She just couldn’t help the comment.
Today was a very odd day.

A few blinks were given at his next words, as indeed she hadn’t been aware of where she was going or what she was doing half the time she was with Torr. It was only when he wanted to...to torture her...that he had lifted his influence off her mind. So she had no idea they were two days, maybe more, from a town.
“Come with you? Maybe part of the way...but...
Damn it! She did not want to be stuck with Hatame for a long time in the one piece of clothing she now had. Too many opportunities for him to pick on her, that was for sure.
She sighed. “If it’s really, really far away, then I guess I can come along. But once we reach the village, you’re on your own. I am NOT walking around a village in nothing but your jacket.

--

Hatame cleared his throat so as not to laugh at the irony of Sakkata's comment. Restrain himself...heh...yeeeaah. And the one time Sakkata should probably be wishing he hadn't. Oh well! She'd cut him off! He was only obeying her command! And if and when she did discover the elusive clasps, he could remind her of that if she said anything.

He feigned a hurt look. "As if you expected any different?"

Nodding at her following words, he smirked slightly at the reluctance in her voice. "It's really, really far away. It took two days to get here, and me and Terri were fast. Well, Terri was at least, but she...er...helped me. Anyway. Yeah, it's a good ways away. Sorry, luv. If I could fly, I'd do it, but y'know how that is. And wouldja stop lookin' like you've been condemned to the gallows? We get to camp out together! Real quality bonding time! How great is that? Uh...don't answer that..."

Stretching again and feeling far less stiff than he had when he had first awoken, he stole a glance in the direction he and Terri had come from. Nothing but wilderness for miles. It was unreal to think they'd come so far in what was really a pretty short amount of time. It'd take them even longer to get back, since this time there was no need to move at such a frenzied pace, well, barring the fact that Sakkata needed some clothes. But that wasn't really life or death urgency there. And, with a smirk, Hatame realized Sakkata couldn't exactly go very fast, either, regardless...

Unless, of course, she wanted to end up flashing the world.

Poor thing.

Hmm...actually, scratch the life or death thing. A practically naked Sakkata was an easily teased, and therefore easily angered, Sakkata. Which meant, in Hatame's case, getting her clothes fast just might mean the difference between the two.

"Fair enough, saves me the trouble of beating men off ya with a stick. Vest and pants, right? And you better be specific about the measurements...unless you wanna leave it to my judgment," he warned with a teasing grin.

With the way he was acting, one would have never thought that, just mere hours ago, all hell had broken lose, and that they had all nearly been killed, that one among them was now gone forever, and that another had been subjected to the most brutal, lethal, and degrading of torments. Hatame had by no means forgotten; he never would, nor would he want to. How could you forget something like that!? But for now, it was shoved back to a distant corner of his mind. Now just wasn't the time. They were alive. That's what counted.

Sakkata was just too embarassed and disgruntled to notice the clasps right then. Of course, it was like Hatame not to mention them. Normally she wouldn't feel embarassed at all about walking around with only a jacket on, but around Hatame...
No. Just no.

"Beating men off...? What the hell are you talking about??"
As strange as it was, Sakkata was pretty damn naive about some things. Like appearances, and the effect they had on the opposite gender.
Then again, she hardly ever saw a male of her own species, and didn't usually look at humans or humanoids as potential mates. It just wasn't her nature.
Maybe that had something to do with why Hatame's remakrs embarassed her so much...
"And as for clothing, I definately won't be leaving it up to you."

Something in his previous coment suddenly clicked, and her head tilted to the side slightly as she surveyed Hatame. Fly...he said he couldn't fly...
Because he couldn't shift back.
Her eyes narrowed lightly as she thought, many things clicking into place at once.
But that wasn't true anymore. No...he had preformed that ritual, she had felt his magick there, unrestrained.
"Hatame..." She murmured without really thinking about it, her mind too busy racing around the new revalation. Finally she looked straight into his eyes.

"Try. Try to fly. Try to transform." Her voice was surprisingly firm, and she stared at him hard, as if willing him to do it right then and there. She had felt it...she knew she had. Somewhere in all the craziness, something had broken. Something that had prevented Hatame from doing so many things.
He could do it now. At least, she hoped she could. She couldn't imagine being trapped in a body other than her natural one with no way to turn back.
"Try it Hatame."

Rhindeer

Hatame saw his initial comment concerning males fly right over her head. Which was amusing, considering she caught on right away to the second part of his comment concerning her clothesâ€"obviously, even though he'd seen her in ar less and she trusted him enough to put her very life in his hands, she didn't quite trust him enough to clothe her...which, considering his sense of humor, was a good thing. Still, her embarrassment at his every little comment was amusing. What? Was he the only one who'd ever, ah, flirted with her before, for lack of a better word to describe his constant, pervy comments? Or maybe Drygans just didn't have an equivilant to the expression. "Not literally, Sakki! Well...I mean, I could, of course, but..."

Sakkata was spared a translation and explanation, thoughâ€"and probably for the better, as it would have been told in his typical styleâ€"when she suddenly spoke up, the tone of her voice snapping him to attention. Meeting her gaze, he listened...

And blinked blankly at her sudden demand.

Um...hadn't he just said he couldn't...?

Yet her request turned his focus inward, whereas before he had been distracted; the last thing he had been thinking about recently was himself, what with all that had happened. And, like a constant, throbbing headache that suddenly ebbs away during sleep, the sudden lack of constant pain hadn't really registered in his distracted mind, especially with the stiffness that came from sleeping on the ground. And perhaps most of the reason it hadn't clicked in his mind was because it was almost...well, almost too...unrealistic to believe. He'd never thought the bindings could be broken. Even earlier, when he had felt them snap, he hadn't wanted to get his hopes up, and instead cast it off as some trick of the mind. After all...it was more than easy to tell stiffness from that constant ache he felt, the pain that burned his muscles and only continued to worsen. There was just no comparison between that pain and the pain of his "curse"; he'd easily been able to tell the difference.

But, a lot of not wanting to realize that the bindings had broken was, well...it was a defense mechanism of sorts, you could say.

But now...it finally registered as he really took the time to listen to his body.

For a moment, all he could do was stare in shock before, tentatively, he experimentally reached for the source of his magic. No...he wasn't going to make the leap to trying to shift until he was absolutely certain...

Elemental magic, just waiting to be shaped and weilded, gently filled him, and he reflexively released his hold on it as though he'd been preparing himself for the usual agony, though it wouldn't come. It never would, again. It was truly an odd feeling to have resigned yourself to a rather gruesome, hopeless fate, and then suddenly find that it was resolved...and it would perhaps take some time before he could embrace his magic without flinching out of habit. Still, it was a wonderful feeling. Words simply could not describe it...the sudden feeling of freedom...

Swallowing, too dumbstruck to speak though his expression spoke volumes, he finally gave a small nod at her request and closed his eyes, concentrating. He could do this...

In all honesty, though, he didn't really know how. He had been trapped in this body for years, and when he had been forced into this form, he hadn't done the shifting on his own. He had been under bindings, and, using the binding, his captors had forced him to shiftâ€"and for his first time ever, too. Only vaguely could he recall the sensations of the shifting, forced though it was, but now he tried to remember as much as he could about that moment. It had happened years ago, but a lot of it was still vivid in his mind. After all...that had been a pretty traumatic event.

He found himself concentrating on what it felt like to be him more than what the actual shifting had felt like. That...hadn't been a good thing to focus on; the feeling then had been panicky at best, a feeling of having absolutely no control. He didn't know if he was doing this right, though, but somehow it felt right enough. It was a shot in the dark, but it was something, and...he knew he could do this. He'd never done it before on his own, but...he'd have to figure it out sometime.

And besides, Sakkata was there. And something in her tone made him all the more determined.

He didn't know how much time passed, but it was no short ordeal, and, willing the change over and over again, determined to do it, he hardly felt it when it actually happened.

At least, not until he suddenly felt himself lurch forward, dropping down to be supported by his hands, as well.

Eyes blinking open in surprise, he gave a slight start and blinked again when he noted that his vision was slightly...off...slightly skewed.

And that was also when he became aware of...other things.

"DAMN!" he suddenly gasped in surprise, and abruptly toppled over as his four legs gave out in his alarm, black wings flailing awkwardly as he plopped down onto his stomach. It...it had...worked. He hadn't known what the hell he was doing, he hadn't expected anything to happen, but it had worked!

There, sprawled out awkwardly on the ground near Sakkata where the human Hatame once stood, was a jet black Gryphon with white streaks running through the front of his feathery mane.

She watched the confusion play out on his familiar face, but restrained from saying anything else. She wasn't sure she wanted to push this...it was, after all, his body and his magick. Still...she wanted to be right.
Please, please be right...

A wave of relief washed over her as he set himself to concentrating. He would try on his own, like she asked. Now...now they just had to wait.
And Sakkata was willing to wait far longer than Hatame would be willing to try. For this, she had all the patience in the world. It was just that important. Well, to her at least. But she couldn't imagine it not being important for him as well.

The look on his face was priceless as he realized his power came without pain. She grinned mildly, assured that she had at least been right in that respect. Now, to see if he could change back. Of course, she was not aware of the fact Hatame had never shifted on his own before, nor the fact his first time had been forced by the bindings.
Either way, she felt he could do it. The bastard was determined enough when it came to bugging her, so it was only to be assumed he could be as stubborn with this as well.

The minutes dragged by, and Sakkata watched, never once minding how long this was taking. But she could feel it now...a slight tingling in the air. Hatame didn't even realize it, but then, Sakkata was more intune to magickal things than he. She could anticipate the change as he could not.
So, of course, the result was rather amusing.
Sakkata laughed lightly at his reaction, shaking her head. She hadn't expected him to be that surprised. "What, forget what you were trying to do?" She quipped, kneeling carefully (so as not to flash of course) to pet some of Hatame's new feathers.
"Never seen a Gryphon up close before...interesting..."

Hatame closed his eyes again for a moment, then reopened them, trying to get adjusted to his new vision. It really was a strange feeling, to go from the frontward facing vision of a human to the sideways vision of a bird, and for a moment he was a bit disoriented from the sudden switch.

Hell, he was disoriented all over, for that matter. It just felt...strange. Really strange. It didn't feel like anything he had expected or remembered. Maybe he'd had high expectations, but he'd expected the return to his true form to feel...natural. But, truth be told, it felt almost just like it had when...well, when he'd been forced into a human body. Just...strange. Foreign, almost, like it wasn't the form he was supposed to take. Like it wasn't his true form.

Flexing his taloned forepaws thoughtfully as he gradually gained his bearings, he tried to think about everything he had heard about shifting, and the reasons so few Gryphons back at the Realm did it, except when absolutely necessary, and for what reasons, though a natural ability, it wasn't widely taught. There was a reason...he'd been taught it, though he couldn't say he'd been paying attention at the time; he hadn't paid attention to much back then because he really hadn't fancied the idea of being used by the Elders, so, in Hatame fashion, he sought to annoy them as much as he possibly could, only in this case by playing naive and dumb. Erg. That information really would have come in handy now...

But, foreign feeling or not...oddly enough, he found he didn't mind. Didn't mind that this body felt like a secondary form, and didn't mind that, after all this...that his human body came out feeling the most...natural. Somehow, he felt that he should mindâ€"after all, his human body wasn't the right one; this form was! And all that time, he'd wanted so badly to return to this form, to feel at home again.

This was no longer his true form.

And it didn't feel a bit wrong.

And yet, it made sense...the Realm had never really been his home, and even though the overwhelming majority of his time in a human form had been agonizing, due to both pain and that feeling of being trapped and confined, aside from the pain, it had been better here. As a human, he'd felt pain, but he'd also met Sakkata and Terri. Had he never been cursed, had he never been confined to that body, that would have never happened...and for that, he was thankful. It may seem odd, but, in retrospect, it was all more than worth it...all of it.

But now, it had been broken. Now, he didn't have to be trapped. Now he had a choice. Who cared if his true form had changed, if it was no longer what it once was? He was free now.

And, regardless of all his complaints about his body's limitations...he had grown accustomed to that body.

"No, it'sss jussst..." He blinked, suddenly noticing the accent his beak created. Whoa...he hadn't even been aware that as a Gryphon he'd even had an accent. Of course, one tended not to notice their own accents, or the accents of their own culture, but having lost it while he was a human, he was now very aware of the way his beak obscured speech in a way he'd never been before. "I...whoa. I hadn't rrreally, ah...expected it to worrrk..." he finally got out, and turned his head slightly to better view her with his new vision. Slowly, the Gryphon's form of a grin formed as his shock began to wind down. "I didn't even know what I wasss doing."

Tail swishing lightly as she pet some of his new feathers, he attempted a smirk and leaned a little into her hand. "Wow, you'rrre actually petting me. I'll make a point to ssshift morrre often..." he remarked wryly.

Sakkata gladly scratched inbetween the feathers as Hatame leaned his head closer, and a smirk formed at his comment. "Can't you restrain that sense of humor for five minutes? I'm trying to enjoy the new discovery."
She retorted, looking Hatame over. Time for an investigation.

Drygans were scholars, or were as much as they could. They read any material that interested them, experamented, conducted studies. They had a craving for knowledge of many kinds. And the strange event happened to perk this side of Sakkata.

Shuffling around Hatame's sprawled form, Sakki poked and prodded, petted and ruffled, and stared and scrutinized the Gryphon before her. She gently pulled one of his large wings out to the side and examined it, wondering at the feather structure and how it allowed him to fly. She touched the feathers, and then the fur, examining the area where the two merged.
She was completely enraptured with Hatame for the first time, though it was from a purely scientific stand point.

She really was enjoying this though. So many interesting aspects...
It appeared she had forgotten Hatame was still Hatame, even if in a different form.

Rhindeer

Hatame blinked rapidly as he suddenly found himself subject to a thorough examination, which he undoubtedly wouldn't have minded had had he been in his human form. And had the examination not been quite so...scholarly. Poked and prodded, ruffled and fluffed, petted and scrutinized, all he could do was stare wide-eyed at Sakkata as she went about her exploration, for once taken completely aback. Of all things she had done, this completely surprised him, and for once in his life...he felt kinda awkward.

A rare event, indeed.

Then again, he wasn't really used to being stared at in that sort of way. After all, the only other time he'd been in his Gryphon form had been around other Gryphons. He'd never been around someone who'd never seen one before while in this form.

"Uhh...having fun back therrre, Sssakki...?" he asked slowly, feathered ears lowered, as she was stretching out his wing to examine its structure. Didn't seem like he needed to ask, though. She looked way too into this, but he just thought he might as well say something to, ah...break the silence? But, other than that, he didn't resist. He'd let her have her funâ€"even if it felt really weird, and seemed like she had forgotten just who it was she was poking and petting.

He had a sudden overwhelming urge to shift back on her while she was practically on him, just to freak her out. Hmm...sounded really tempting...and now that he knew what to do, he could do it...

But he would be good! For the time being, at least...

Maybe.

She started examing his fur and feathers, and the place the two merged near his chest, and, try as he might to behave, the idea and opportunity was just way too good to pass up. He might not have another opportunity like this, after all. And this whole pokey-poke thing was really starting to weird him out, anyway.

Closing his eyes briefly, more out of habit than a true need to, he focused, this time concentrating on what his human form felt likeâ€"a far easier task that remembering what this form had felt like had been. And perhaps it was for this reason that the shift also occurred so quickly, to Hatame's relief. A slow shift really wouldn't have had the same effect.

It hardly took a second. One minute, Sakkata was prodding at a full-grown Gryphon, and the next instant...a human sprawled out on his stomach.

"Oh baby, don't stop..." he crooned.

Sakkata was so involved with her investigation that she didn't even pick up on the faint tingling of Hatame's change. One moment, she was poking at his feather-fure chest, the next, he was quite human and still sprawled out on the ground.
"ACK!" Surprised, she jolted backward, fell flat on her rump, and dashed to make sure nothing flashed. She did, of course, land right in front of him. Her luck was just horrible that way...
Tail whipping around her legs defensively and tightly covering anything and everything, Sakkata all out glared at Hatame.

"That was NOT FUNNY DAMMIT!" She was bristling like mad, but was too self-concious around Hatame to get up and beat him. Nooo...no more chances at flashing the perverted Hatame today.
Usually, she was very secure in her own body and appearance, and didn't mind moving around naked if it was really necissary. However, all of that evaporated when she was around Hatame. She didn't know why, it just did.

So for now, she was stranded sitting with her knees bent to her chest, too wary to try and get up and beat the crap out of Hatame. Stupid jacket...

Rhindeer

Sakkata may not have thought it the slightest bit funny, but Hatame sure did. His serious expression cracked instantly at her reaction, and it was lucky he was already on the ground, because if he'd been standing, he probably would have toppled over. Dear Gods that had been priceless! He didn't think he'd ever seen someone move so fast in his life!

Luckily for Sakkata, he was laughing too hard, tears gathering in his eyes, to have really caught a glimpse of anything. Not that it would have been anything he hadn't already seenâ€"and wouldn't mind seeing. Still, nonetheless, he found her scramble to cover anything and everything almost as amusing as he found her initial reaction. But, then again, he himself had the modesty of...well...a Gryphon, and could easily walk around without a stitch on, thinking nothing of it, if it wasn't so damned cold as a human. And if he wouldn't get arrested.

After all, Gryphons didn't wear clothes, on their own or around others, so he'd always been comfortable in his own skinâ€"Gryphon or human.

And he had no idea that Sakkata's modesty only came out when she was around him.

"Heh heh heh...aw, c'mon, don't stop now!" he managed between bouts of laughter. "By all means, continue your exploration! You're so good at it!"

But he did know good and well that she couldn'tâ€"well, rather, wouldn'tâ€"beat the crap out of him while wearing only a jacket. Best to live it up while he could...and hope she wouldn't remember all the whaps she owed him when she finally got proper clothes.

Sakkata ground her sharp teeth together, the anger and embarassment only rising as he laughed his ass off at her. Ugh, no one bugged her like Hatame did! What was so goddamn irritating about him anyway??? She hated it!
A low hiss actually escaped her, and it was no where near human, gryphon, or anything else most people saw. It was purely draconic. And very menacing.

"No, thank you! I was only interested in your Gryphon body!" She replied scathingly. No, she would not sit here and get laughed at. Her tail whipped out and smacked Hatame in the side of the head just a split second before she stood and quickly stormed away from him.
He was SUCH a pain in the ass! Why did she even bother trying to put up with him???
No, she didn't even want to think about it. She just wanted to get away from the most annoying being she had ever met: Hatame!

Stepping behind a large tree, Sakkata took a moment to calm herself. Damn he got under her skin!
While fuming, she absently began to button up the jacket without giving it a second thought. Only by the time she was half way done did she realize what she was doing. Damn it! He hadn't even mentioned the fact the stupid thing had clasps!
Ugh, she couldn't deal with his crap right now.

She had scrambled into the tree as soon as the thought was finished, and raked her claws along the bark to vent her frustration. It worked better than raking them through Hatame.
Why did she put up with him anyway...? He obviously pissed her off more times than she could count every day, and he was soooo damn annoying. Why didn't she just ditch him? Well, now, she felt obligated to stay with him, as he had nearly died saving her, and had preformed the ritual to bring her back as well.
But what about before? Why had she stuck around him before??
"I must be unforgivably stupid..." She muttered as her temporary answer for the quandry.
And speaking of which...why did Hatame hang around her anyway??? She always ended up beating the crap out of him. There had to be other people he could annoy just as much. Glancing through the branches at him, she frowned.
"Why do you insist on just bugging me???" She muttered, now entrenched in a very brooding mood.
Which Hatame would probably come and break with more annoyance here any minute now.

Rhindeer

Or...not.

Her sudden low hiss made him sober up quickly, a very menacing sound he'd never heard her make beforeâ€"or anything make before, for that matterâ€"but by then it was too late. Eyes widening at her dangerous tone, it suddenly occurred to him just how "not funny" she really found this. Crap... A moment later, and his head was reeling from a very familiar sensation, smacked for what had to be the hundredth time by what he had once called a "sexy" tail. And been throttled for shortly after.

He'd forgotten exactly how far that tail of hers could reach.

His vision cleared just in time to see her vanish behind a large tree and, still reeling a little, he slowly worked his way up to a seated position. Owww...okay...that had been really incredibly stupid, and of course he knew thatâ€"he did a lot of stupid things; it was his nature! Though...for some reason, Sakkata really brought out that side of him. He was far tamer around other people, and had never quite had this effect on anyone else before. Hell, he couldn't remember ever teasing anyone quite this mercilessly, either. He'd always been a prankster. But it seemed he'd reserved all his best for Sakkata, though everything he did was rather spur of the moment as it was. And he still kept at it, even after getting pummeled. Why, he didn't honestly know...well, aside from the two obvious facts: it was fun, and he was a glutton for punishment.

But it had been a good stunt, and it had been priceless, and...

And Sakki was royally pissed off.

As if that wasn't painfully obvious.

And it became even more so when he heard her scramble up a tree and commence shredding the bark with her claws, before falling silent in what he imagined was the usual post-prank broodiness.

And it wasn't much longer before Hatame began to squirm. Maybe he'd overdone it a bit? Especially now, so soon after all that had happened to her. Maybe that had been a bit too much too soon? And besides, though a pouty and even mildly angry Sakkata was amusing, especially since she tended to recover from those bouts rather quickly in her typical mood swing-ish manner, he could say that, in truth, he preferred to see her happy, especially after everything...

He tried to stay put and give her space to cool off, but before long, the new, odd feeling of overbearing guilt was driving him insane, and he slowly got up and made his way quietly over to her tree. He hated being in the dog house. And, though he loved to tease her and would leap at every opportunity, he really didn't intend to hurt her or drive her storming away. It was when he really upset her that he felt horrible...he hated that.

Time for some major sucking up.

"Sakkata?" he called up to her softly, making a point to, this time, not use his nickname for her. Leaning on the opposite side of the tree so as to give her privacy, he looked up in her general direction. "Hey, ah...remember a long time ago when I first told you I could fly and you mentioned you wished you could? Well...you could now, if you wanted...I could take you." He would just have to take a few moments to get the hang of it again, first. It had been a while, but he'd been good at it when he'd been able to. Just a brief warm-up, and he was sure it would all come back to him.

Sakkata had been really fascinated by his wings. Maybe that'd cheer her up. In other words, it was his way of saying, "Gyah! I was a jerk! Forgive meee!"

Sakkata was left a few blissful moments of hard brooding before Hatame finally made his way over. She knew he would. She knew it.
She actually flinched as he said her name, brows drawn together almost painfully. Yeah...maybe it had been a bit too much too soon. She hadn't been emotionally ready for another of his pranks...

Sakki literally had to bite the bark to keep from growling at Hatame, sharp teeth digging deeply into the bark and flesh beyond. Damn him!
No, no...just calm down Sakkata. Just calm down. Deep breaths. Deeeeep breaths.
After a few of those 'deep breaths' through her nose, Sakki released her bulldogish hold on the branch.
Despite calming herself, she just couldn't help the heated words that tumbled out of her grimacing mouth.
"Can't you just say sorry? Is it too much to ask for a simple appology?? Or is it that you're not sorry at all, that you're really insensitive enough to pull one of your damn stupid jokes on me right after everything that happened!?"
Her voice had raised near the end in an emotion she couldn't quite place, and she quickly chomped into the branch yet again, grinding it mercilessly between her teeth to keep from screaming.

Why, why couldn't the bastard just say sorry, just once??
Ugh, why did she even care!? He was stupid, and that was his nature, and she wouldn't be able to change that.
But he could at least appologize once in awhile!
No, dammit, it wasn't even important. She didn't care...

Now even more angry, and failing to delude herself, Sakki tore into the branch with even more viciousness than before.
Oh but Hatame had better be grateful for being on the ground...

Rhindeer

And then it was Hatame's turn to flinch, the guilt growing heavier with Sakkata's words, especially given the emotion that was thick in them. Well, yeah, it was easy to apologize, even for him, but...that was the point. He just had a different way of apologizing, as where he came from, words were pretty much meaningless, so he'd always tried to prove himself through action when he could, especially where it counted, and it definitely counted here; if he hadn't cared about her to any extent, he certainly wouldn't have nearly died for her, and now...yeah, he truly felt apologetic. But "sorry" was just so easy to say...and he just hadn't been so sure it was something Sakkata would accept. Of course, she was just so unpredictable and hard to figure out at times...

Guess it just came down to a difference in upbringing and experiences.

And Hatame had a knack for making situations more complicated than they should be. Came from hanging around Sakkataâ€"as much as he kept her on her toes, the same was true for him.

"Ack, no, Sakki, I am sorry Seriously! I just...ah...guess I just didn't know how you felt about saying an apology 'cause where I come from showing counts more and..." His last sentence was little more than a mumble as he fidgeted absently with the bark on the tree. Not that she needed to know that, but he was just a little out of his element and was trying to think of something to say. He'd never been good with words, but...eh, what he lacked in eloquent speeches he made up for with honesty. He had a lot of vices, but dishonesty wasn't one of themâ€"unless, of course, it was to protect someone. "Ah, nevermind. Sakkata, I'm really sorry...I...didn't mean to hurt you..."

But, ever since that whole dilemma had concluded, ever since he brought her back, in truth he had been at a loss as to how to, well, treat her. In the beginning, she had wanted comfort and at first he'd been afraid to even touch her in case that harmed her, but that had been exactly what she'd wanted. And then, that morning, she'd been more light-hearted and had actually welcomes his usual joking. On one hand, he wanted to tread lightly and be extra careful and gentle around her, lest anything else be too much for her and he came across as insensitive. On the other, he wanted to act normally around her, lest acting gentle gave her the impression that he thought she was some broken thing. Sakkata herself seemed to be shifting back and forth between the two...

She'd been through a lot. That was understandable. It was just tough to keep up at times, and he really did want to be supportive. It felt really important to him.

Man, had he blown it this time.

He shifted awkwardly. "I was a jerk, and...I'm sorry. I'd make it up to you, if there's anything..."
