Well. Wasn't that just the most odd thing?

In the south of the Thunderblacks, in the green hills that were still almost mountains, Allette had been out for a stroll around noon, coming back from a bath. She had flown to the spring, but felt like walking back, so she had, winged shoes hung casually over her shoulder. And she had come across a gargoyle! or, Allete assumed that it was a gargoyle.

It was a gray statue, made of stone that was, in some places, too delicately and perfectly carved to truly be a sculpture. Slightly ruffled hair, a bandanna, horns... Well, quite a sight! Especially here, they were miles from the village so it had to be a gargoyle--who would drag a statue all the way out here? Quite excited, Allete for brief moment planned on leaving, and returning with nightfall.

But then she recalled that several of the village men were to be hunting dear on that hill and the hills around it that afternoon, and she did have her book...

The men in her village, well, they weren't so horrible or anything, but they weren't curious like Allete, and were less prone to their whims. Allete was the sort of person who would do quite well with a pair of wings, letting the breeze take her wherever it pleased. She had no proof that the gargoyle before her was nice, except that she rather thought that it was true, and that the lines of his face and the crinkle of his eyes hinted on a kind smile that Allete thought she might like to see in flesh.

And, she considered, it would be just a shame if some man from the village thought he would be dangerous and broke him.

So Allete took out her book and settled in to wait for night fall, hazel eyes studying the pages for hours. She had just cut her hair and it was short and dark. Occasionally she would reach up to tuck a piece behind her ear.

Perhaps now would be the time to explain about the shoes.

They were a simple affair, soft black leather shoes with straps that tied nicely up her calves. On the heals of the shoes were wings. Soft, feathery, but immobile and lifeless without feet in the shoes. He mother had given them to her, a gift from a stranger who had once passed through the village. Her mother was too old to use them, so she had given them to Allete.

By the time the sun was skimming the hills, Allete was quite hungry, but soon the gargoyle would wake and she could be on her way. It had turned out that only a few boys gathering firewood had come near her at all, and she had sent them towards an old, dead tree she'd seen, away from the gargoyle. But now she was trembling in anticipation. She had never met a gargoyle before, and she loved meeting new people.

Sunrise that morning had brought Terra to this sheltered area, and he had happily settled down for the day, thinking himself well hidden.  He'd no clue about the nearby village, since this area was entirely new to him.  And as he slowly woke, color fading into his body and clothes, he stretched and yawned, he finally caught sight of the girl sitting nearby.

A leap backwards put some space between them, the boy landing in a crouch, staring at the girl in surprise as his wings twitched nervously.  She looked harmless enough, sitting there with her book, reading peacefully, but why was she just sitting here, as if she was waiting on something?  It was rather disconcerting to find someone sitting out here, as if they'd been waiting for him to wake up.

"Ah...what are you doing?"  Terra finally straightened up as he spoke, though it was pretty obvious he was still ready to bolt if she made a wrong move.  He really didn't like being caught off guard like this.

Allete bookmarked her place and set the book aside, but didn't rise. Instead, she fiddled with a lace from one of her shoes and smiled at him cheerfully. "Hiya! Uhm... Well, I found you out here, and I was worried, so I decided to stick around and make sure no one broke you while you were sleeping! Because you were really pretty and it would have been a shame. And also I got to read my book, which was nice."

'Airhead' wasn't a term that one would use, generally, for Allete. Her head wasn't filled with air--on the contrary, her head was so full of thoughts that sometimes they just came out very oddly or without tact. Yes, that explained her quite well, and Allete knew that she should do something about it(or, at least, people were forever telling her so), but that seemed a bit like work to her, and not really necessary work. It might make people like her more, but that seemed like a bad reason to change how she acted. So she was just going to carry on as she did.

She flexed her toes in the grass while she waited for him to reply and then paused, and set about putting the shoes on. She would have to return to the village soon before her mother sent out a hunting party or something for her. Over protective mothers were such a drag.

That was not an answer he'd been expecting.  Guarding him while he slept?  And she'd just assumed he wouldn't attack her when he woke.  That kind of blind trust, naivete, faith, or whatever you wanted to call it was confusing to Terra, who was quite naturally extremely cautious around people.  "Uhhhmmm.  Thanks."  And then something else clicked, no one else?  "Wait a second, there are other people around here?  I though this part of the mountains was... I didn't think there were people around here."  That last part came out almost as a whine.

Terra was not really comfortable with people, he had lived in utter isolation with Raoul, the mage, all his life.  He knew the mage had contact with other people, but he'd always preferred to stay behind at their little home, and had been totally content living his life that way.  The disappearance of his friend had been such a shock, it had taken several weeks to work up his nerves to leave home to start searching.  And he wasn't really making any progress searching by himself, but... He wasn't quite ready to really start trying to get help from other people, which was why he'd been trying to avoid people.

She was lacing the straps up her first leg. They were a dark, dark brown leather, the kinds that smells nice, and looks soft. Allete answered him while he did this, still smiling, "Yes. To the East--my village. No one much knows about us; we don't ever really get visitors. Especially not, er, gargoyles." She moved on to the other shoe, but paused to smile up at him.

"My name's Allete, by the way. My mother is the village's midwife."
She tied the last strap and stood. Not on the ground, but right above it. The wings flapped gently on the back of the shoes, almost unnoticeable. She loved her shoes. "Were are you going? I can escort you around or even through the village, if you'd like."

He really did seem nice... if a little jumpy. Allete would make sure noting happened to him.

That was when he finally noticed the shoes she had.  Or more specifically, the wings on her shoes.  And when she stood and hovered above the ground, he had to wonder how she balanced so perfectly with such awkwardly placed wings.  He glanced back up at her as she introduced herself, and then offered to guide him around her village.  Well...maybe she was alright.

"I'm Terra."  He hesitated, then reasoned that if Raoul was in the village, surely Allete would know.  The mage wasn't exactly the most subtle person in the world, not to mention how his clothing would make him stick out like a sore thumb no matter where he went.  "'m not going anywhere in particular, really.  I'm looking for someone, a friend of mine.  He disappeared a few weeks ago, and I dunno why."

((OOC:  Apologies for the short post, I just wanted to get us moving again.))

The answer, of course, was magic, and that really the wings were mostly because it was a nice, classy look. Not that Allete would phrase it like that. She rose a like higher with a slight flex of a muscle most people didn't know that they had. and smiled even wider at Terra, "I like your name," she said, "But I'm sorry to say that no one here has seen anyone new passing through in months. Well, except that now I've seen you. But you can still come on through the village. Are you hungry? I'm sure mama would feed you."

Or possibly she wouldn't, if she was asleep already or busy, and then Allete would. It didn't really matter, either way. Of course, Allete had still not really stopped to think about how Terra might feel about humans, or, well, other people in general. Dense is not a word that one would use for Terra, but perhaps it's a word one should use.

((oh, that's totally fine, I only require two or so good paragraphs to respond : ) ))

Terra sighed deeply.  So, no one had seen Raoul around here...so where had the mage gone?  The gargoyle had no real idea of where to look, the only thing he could think of now was to ask around and see if anyone knew something he didn't.  But going into a town, around crowds of people... Well.  Allete didn't seem so bad, and there was safety in numbers, so...

He nodded then, deciding he'd go with the girl for now.  "Hm.  Well, maybe someone's heard something, or knows something, or...something.  I dunno."  He finished slowly, aware of how awkward that had sounded.  "So, uh.  Yeah.  I guess I'll just come with you for now, if you don't mind."  Of course she wouldn't, she'd offered to guide him through earlier, so why was he continuing to stumble over his words like this?  "Ah, thanks for the offer.  And um.  I'm sorry...I'm...kind of not used to people, except Raoul.  We kind of lived alone."

((OOC:  Wheee, awkward Terra is awkward!))

They lived together? "Oh,"  Allete said, "When you said 'friend', I didn't realize that you--well, no matter. Just don't tell anyone else; not everyone's as open-minded as I am." Well, she had never met anyone like that before, but Allete had certainly heard stories! It did make her a little bit uncomfortable, but she knew that she just needed time to get used to it.

Allete was now dancing a little on the air, quick flicks of her feet that was more of a habit than anything else--Allete liked to move, especially when in the air. Standing still five feet up felt unnatural, and Allette did not really like unnatural things.

((I return!  But with a kind've short post))

That little tone in her voice made him blink and tilt his head to one side as he tried to puzzle out what he'd said that got that reaction.  Open-minded?  "That I...what?"  His wings flicked awkwardly, a sort of nervous twitch.  And then it hit him, like a runaway train.

His eyes widened as he blushed, his grey cheeks tinting darker.  "It...it's not, I mean, we're not... not like that!  Raoul's like...a father.  Or an older brother.  Or something.  But we're not...like that."  Terra stared at the ground, still blushing fiercely, feeling horribly embarrassed.

((It's alright.))
