Plotting Center / Merchant Prince plotting (Essyrn)
April 20, 2018, 11:54:52 AM
I recently made an Essyrni character, and I'm eager to get into some politics and economy! I checked this forum via the search function, but couldn't find a dedicated plotting thread for the Merchant Princes and Essyrn. I did check the Essyrn character directory, and found some either Merchant Princes/Princesses themselves, or other high placed people, but little direction to plotting/organisation. Should I just start poking people with relevant characters?

Essyrn / Faysal ibn Zaahir Jalal, Heir
April 17, 2018, 12:15:12 PM
__________________QUICK STATS
Name: Faysal ibn Zaahir Jalal
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Orientation: Good question. He's had one wife so one would assume either some degree of attraction to women, or just a sense of duty.
Species: Human
Ethnicity: Essyrni
Height: 5'9
Occupation: A firstborn son of a Merchant Prince, training to be a worthy heir someday. He's managing a few of his father's assets to practice and prove himself.
Residence: His father's palace, the House of Eternal Sun

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:
His dark skin and handsome face aren't that unique among his people, but there are two features that set him apart from others. The most striking one that people usually take in first are his crutches. Having been gravely injured a few months ago, in what some people suspect to be an assassination attempt on the life of either him or his father, Faysal was crippled and lost most of his mobility. He can (slowly) move around with the help of his crutches, and most of the time, family servants carry him in a litter.

Like most wealthy Essyrni, he keeps his dark hair long in order to show off his status. Most of the time, he keeps it free, but sometimes he wears different ornaments or clasps in order to display allegiance. His clothes are yet another symbol of status - the rare fabric, high-quality thread and expensive embroidery are all testament to his family's wealth and power.

Personality: A firstborn son of a Merchant Prince, Faysal has been raised to one day take over his father's position, and it reflects in his upbringing. He is a cautious thinker, one that always considers his situation and tries to find a best way to solve the current predicament. While he enjoys scholarship and improvement as much as every other Essyrni, he is at his best when surrounded by other people. Regardless of whoever he's speaking to, Faysal is always unfailingly polite and rarely loses his composure. As adept as he is at navigating the cutthroat intrigues of the Merchant Princes, he does his best to keep his natural inclination towards scheming in check, and he does not enjoy acting against people who do not deserve it.

His kind nature is something he hides to the best of his ability, lest others use it against him. Another of Faysal's weaknesses is his dedication to his family. He cares deeply about his brothers, and frequently acts to hide his father's more ignoble acts in order to preserve the family honour and reputation.

Despite what one might suspect, Faysal does not have deep-seated insecurities stemming from his relationship with his father, nor is gaining his approval and love, his motivation in the slightest. While it's true that satisfying Zaahir is something he rarely achieved, and  their relations are far from one might expect from a father and a son, Faysal doesn't let that get in the way of truly important things.

Magic/Abilities:
- As the heir to a Merchant Prince, Faysal received an extensive education in trade, economy and politics.
- He used to practice swordplay, but his injury put an end to it.It is unknown whether he possesses any magical abilities.

Relationships:
- His father Zaahir, a powerful Merchant Prince and core figure in Faysal's life.
- His mother Rayhana, Zaahir's first wife
- His younger brother Amani, a runaway
- His youngest brother Mirza, quite a sweet kid
- Mirza's mother Safiyyah, Zaahir's second wife
- He also is familiar with Zaahir's other wives.
- Wife position currently empty, as the previous occupant was recently poisoned.

History:
Faysal was born into a coveted position of a Merchant Prince's eldest son. He was surrounded by luxury and privilege few people can ever see in his lifetime, and always provided for all his needs. His father was a stern, exacting man who expected a lot from everyone, and his son and heir most of all. He would accept nothing short of absolute perfection, and he's made it clear.

Faysal's childhood was spent with the best of tutors and instructors. He proved to be a diligent and capable pupil, one any teacher would be proud of, and was expected to grow into an heir his father demanded. His brother Amani was born soon, to one of Zaahir's another wives. Contrary to Faysal, Amani was a rascal no one could contain or predict. Despite such differences, Faysal did his best to get along and look after his brother.

Unlike Faysal, who accepted his position and learned how to work within it, Amani hated the responsibilities thrust upon him and the stifling gilded cage he was put into. When Zaahir began to arrange a match for him, it was the last straw for the rebellious youth. Amani ran away, leaving nothing behind. This incident enraged the proud Merchant Prince, who put a high reward for whoever drags his unruly son back home - or delivers his head.

A few months after Amani's escape, Zaahir's third son Mirza was born. The Merchant Prince declared that it would be enough for him - he didn't need any more disobedient offspring. Faysal's position as the heir was all but assured, to the great pride of Rayhana, and displeasure of all other Zaahir's wives.

Safiyyah found herself in a unique position that she intended to take full advantage of. Her child Mirza was the only one who could remotely threaten Faysal's position. She quickly proved to be more than enough of a match for him, her cunning and ruthlessness becoming a threat just as great as the machinations of other Merchants Princes.

Character Limitations: Finally I'm getting some use out of this section. Feel free to move him around and some minor reactions (i.e. if your character punches him, go ahead and describe him falling to the floor). I would ask to avoid using healing powers on him since he has a reason not to seek magical help (and it makes others underestimate him :>). I have a pretty set image of who he is in my mind, so I'd rather not have him turned into a vampire/werewolf/other creature, but if you're very certain that it would fit him, I will at least hear you out. Romance-wise, it's going to be hard since he's too focused on duty to his family to ever consider it, but I won't stop you from trying.

Name: Rianharr Thalance. Friends and people who dislike grappling with pronunciation call him Ria'
Age: In his teens
Gender: Male
Orientation: Bisexual biromantic
Species: Half-elf
Ethnicity: Serenian
Height: Depends on how high are his heels
Occupation: One man fashion revolution and a student at Wyrdwood Academy
Residence: Wyrdwood Academy student dorms

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description: Ria' puts a lot of effort into keeping his appearance as amazing as it is. He spends a small fortune on creams to keep his complexion pristine and worthy of his pretty face, combs his long silky hair every day and usually wears a robe that makes heads turn. Ria' loves to accessorize (within the limits of common sense and recent fashion, of course!) and frequently sports some tasteful jewelry or other trinkets. Unlike other mages, their purpose is to augment his looks rather than magical power. He has also recently dyed his hair purple in order to match his new robe better.

music

Personality: Ria' thrives on people's attention that feeds his ego. His true passion is fashion and beauty, something he's willing to enforce at all costs. He's missed many lessons because he saw a student desperately in need of a makeover, and most professors have gotten into a good habit of just throwing him out whenever he starts ranting about whatever they're wearing. Should anyone mess with his hair or clothes, they would face his imminent wrath - but only if there's a way to get revenge without getting dirty. Under this fancy (and very important) exterior, Ria' is a devoted friend always ready to help those important to him.

Magic/Abilities:
- Expert knowledge of fashion trends and clothing
- Excellent tailor, barber and makeup artist
- Magic-wise, he has a decent grasp of the basics

Relationships:
- Plutonius Kingshield, bestie

History:
An excerpt from a letter sent by Lord Harold Thalance to an unknown mage within the Wyrdwood Academy:

"I am writing this to you in utmost confidence. This information is very sensitive, and not something I'd want repeated. Do me a favour and upon reading, transform this letter into a frog or something. The issue is simple: I need your help and I'm calling in this debt from ten years ago.

Do you remember my son? I'm sure you do - few people can forget what he said about my cousin's hairstyle at the party last spring. He's the problem - or, more precisely, my foolish actions as a youth are. I don't relish the thought of reliving those memories, but you deserve to know the whole story. I wouldn't ask you to just blindly trust me without telling you the truth.

And the truth is, I kept a mistress, Sylvia. Many men in my position do, it isn't something that rare. I got her and my wife Adria pregnant at roughly the same time, and at a whim, I asked Sylvia to keep the child. I had a dream of my kids growing up together, you see. She grumbled a little - she wasn't too fond of children, you see, but in the end, I managed to convince her.

The problem started when they gave birth. My legitimate child was stillborn. In a fit of stupidity that I mistook for brilliance, I took Sylvia's son and switched them, and bribed the midwife to stay silent. Neither Adria nor Sylvia ever learned the truth, and Rianharr was raised as my trueborn son.

Yes, I know it was stupid, and recently I was faced with undeniable proof. Ria' has started to exhibit signs of his true parentage - ears started getting pointier, you know the stuff. I didn't want Adria to get suspicious, and unfortunately, there have been no elves in our family trees close enough to be an excuse.

Fortunately, Ria' has some magic talent, and you owe me one. I've decided to send him to the Wyrdwood Academy. If there's some procedure that can help, or an illusion to make him look more human, please find it for him. If not, I instructed the boy to say that his ears got hurt in a magic accident. What I did was stupid, but he doesn't deserve to suffer the sins of his father.

Hyoite / Sharrow, Agent
March 26, 2018, 02:11:58 AM
 __________________QUICK STATS
Name: Got lots of them, Aleksander calls him Sharrow.
Age: It's a bit hard to keep track of one's age at the streets. A good estimate would be that he's in his twenties.
Gender: Male
Orientation: Pansexual panromantic
Species: Human
Ethnicity: An Unspeakable from Thanatos
Height: 5'5
Occupation: Agent of the First Councillor
Residence: Wherever his mission demands him to be

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description: A short, average in build young man, Sharrow enjoys the anonymity his unassuming looks grant him. While his natural hair colour is brown and his eyes are blue, he's learned to utilize disguise to mask his original appearance and adapt a different identity.
Spoiler

Personality: His dedication and loyalty are the crux of his character and the driving motivation behind his actions. He's a cautious sort, one more inclined to talk his way out of trouble rather than put his training to use, and preserve as much life as possible. He enjoys taking on different identities and playing out the roles he's been assigned, but never forgets that his actions are in a service of a higher cause.

Magic/Abilities:
- Close-combat training with knives and unarmed
- Fluent in most languages
- Cipher- and code-breaking
- Bluffing and persuasion

Relationships:
- The most important one would be his master, First Councillor Aleksander Saroian

History:
Sharrow was one of the many street urchins of Thanatos, born into the varied casta of Unspeakables, and probably fated to never leave it. He would undoubtedly share the fate of many other directionless orphans, were it not for one fated encounter. By destiny or chance, he once crossed path with the Lord Aleksander Saroian of the High Council and made a poorly-thought effort to try and lift his pockets. While his clumsy attempt failed, the vampire lord saw potential in him. He decided to take the child with him and raise him into an agent to further his goals. A youth with no loyalties that would conflict with his mission, a perfect tool to utilize.

Ever since, Sharrow has been working hard to train and prove it to Aleksander that he was worth the effort and the resources spent. His mortality allows him to go mostly unnoticed, and access places a vampire is barred from, but can prove to be more of a hindrance than an asset in the long run.

Arca / Midnight Fathoms (DragonSong)
March 23, 2018, 03:51:29 PM
It was a nice, warm Serenian night. Quite a relief - the silk ensemble Coriander was wearing did not provide a lot of warmth. The open-air reception in the gardens was a novel idea. He was looking forward to exploring it. Would he find some interesting flowers and a lovely scholar to describe their properties in detail? Maybe a telescope manned by an avid starwatcher? Perhaps he should sneak around and see if he could enter someplace he was not supposed to. There was no fun without risk, after all.

But the night was still young and he had plenty of time. The minstrels were beginning to play a popular dance, and it would be a shame to ignore their efforts. Even though Coriander mostly despised physical activities, this was one he was quite partial to. It was more about grace and skill than propensity for violence and brute force.

He glanced around the main courtyard, only to spot quite an intriguing woman. Was it the ambassador's daughter? He didn't know she returned from Thanatos already. He really should work on his gossip network a bit more! Either way, it was an opportunity, and he was not the kind to let one pass him by. What was the worst thing that could happen? He could get rejected, but he was certain that his ego could take the hit.

"I don't believe we've been introduced" he began, performing a bow that wouldn't be out of place on an illustration in an etiquette textbook. "I am Elethain Coriander. Might you be the child of Ambassador Moonglade I've heard about?"

La'marri / Maldwyn the Starsong, minstrel
March 23, 2018, 12:12:24 PM
__________________QUICK STATS
Name: Maldwyn the Starsong
Age: Seventeen seasons
Gender: Probably male. No one bothered to check.
Species: Faerie/pixie
Ethnicity: A citizen of Dreamhaven
Height: Seven inches, wingspan almost as much
Occupation: Minstrel and poet at the court
Residence: A hollowed-out mushroom at the Niahi Woods

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description:  A rather physically unassuming small creature, he is mostly passed over until he begins to speak. His voice is his most significant and striking feature, able to captivate and ensorcel. He currently wears a cloak woven out of forgotten sorrows, a gift from a friend who appreciated his work.
Image removed. Please read our art usage policy. Thank you!
music

Personality: A bit neurotic and very changeable, his connection to the stars and the night sky is what defines his behaviour. On full moon nights, he is an eloquent erudite who can charm a stone, on new moon nights he's reclusive and moody. The stars are a smaller, yet constant influence, subtly manipulating his behaviour as well.

Magic/Abilities:
- The usual faerie abilities of flight and subtly nudging nature
- An accomplished bard and musician, with a beautiful singing voice and a good head for rhymes
- Capable of playing several instruments, although his favourite is a harp

Relationships[:/b]
- Has at least passing familiarity with most of the Dreamhaven court
- A gaggle of adoring fans

History:
Madwyn's mother, Caerwyn the Candlelight did not have a happy relationship with her husband Gwalchmai. At first, she openly bragged about tricking the great warrior into marriage and basked in the envy of other women. Yet soon she learned that there was a downside to her choice. Gwalchmai held little interest in women (or men, for that matter), all he cared about was winning glory by taking on greater and stronger threats.

Rejected and lonely, Caerwyn decided to try and make her husband jealous. She claimed to be courted by the constellations themselves, inventing stories of how the Great Hunter lay his sparkling belt at her feet, how the seven sisters all fought among themselves for her attention. Yet despite fooling most of the court, he still wouldn't look at her.

No one in Dreamhaven even thought that the child was Gwalchmai - he has departed several years ago on a quest to slay a dragon, he couldn't have possibly even visited his wife's bed. It was simpler to attribute Caerwyn's state to one of her celestial lovers, maybe even make a few guesses on the identity. The child was named Maldwyn, 'brave friend', as she hoped that her child could be a close companion to her.

She didn't want to be that kind of parent who would neglect him the way Gwalchmai neglected her, so she ended up being a very responsible and supportive mother. She recognized his talent early on and traded favours to get him musical training. He learned how to play several instruments and soon was working on his own pieces. The day he was offered a position of the royal minstrel in the court was the proudest day of her life.

Character Limitations: He's up for pretty much everything! I'd still appreciate if you let me know if you want to stab him, since I'd have to figure out the colour of his blood.

Physical Description
Short and unassuming, Coriander makes up for his stature with practiced elegance. He wears the rich and intricate clothing suited for a noble of his rank, cut in the latest fashion by a well-paid tailor out of high-quality fabric. His dark eyes are usually sparking with mirth or a spark of intrigue. He usually keeps his dark hair tied up.

[close]

Personality
A pleasure-seeker and a socialite, Coriander finds greatest joy in interacting with his fellow nobles - be it an invigorating conversation, a ball in Serendipity, or scheming against someone. He finds all manners of court entertainment, save for martial combat, highly enjoyable and seeks them out. His love for intrigue frequently gets him in trouble that he doesn't really mind - for him, everything is a game and losses are just a part of it.

Magic/Abilities
- Silver tongue. He's quite a well-spoken young man.
- Plotting and scheming. He's quite practiced in court intrigue, although applying it for a best possible outcome is a different story...

Relationships
- Out of his family, he's the closest to his sister and his cousin.

History
Elethain is a second child of the moderately important noble Coriander family. It is a position he thoroughly enjoyed, bereaved of any real responsibilities and bearing all of the privileges it entails. His elder sister Visti joined the army and quickly climbed the ranks, while his younger brother Avemai showed dedication and maturity that convinced their parents to make him their heir. Unlike most older siblings passed over in the succession line, Elethain never really held a grudge - who would want to be the head and be burdened with all those boring duties?

His tutors have reported that he excelled in most important subjects such as etiquette, history and heraldics, performed acceptably in academics, but was a complete failure when it came to more physical subjects such as hunting or swordplay. Once he was grown enough to attend court, he's developed a reputation of an open-minded, yet playful individual. Some found him agreeable, some just judged his behaviour to be a folly of youth, others despised his lack of direction. He was quite content with making just any impression - both friends and enemies are equally valuable in the game he plays.

Character limitations: None whatsoever. Want to grab/hit him, be my guest! If you want to make out or more, both he and I are always up for it! Violence and other questionable actions are also fine, the sky's the limit!

PLAYER WANTS

What are your favorite kinds of plots and relationships to play?
- Court intrigue and politics. I have a soft spot for intricate, detailed plots. I would be completely up for my characters getting owned or played, if it's all for the better story!
- Scholarly research. I love discovering the truth of the world and making new inventions. As a former biology major, I have a deep appreciation of learning. If you're a nerd about something and want to use it in a fantasy setting, hit me up and let's make this dream a reality!
- Infiltration and espionage. I like playing spies and agents devoted to a country or a person. If your character needs a faithful minion, I can make him!
- Magic and wizardly matters. This is a huge soft spot for me and I love wizards above all else.
- Friendships, good professional relationships. I like characters working together to achieve a common goal. If you think one of my squishies could help mine or the other way around, let's plot it!
- Friendly enemies, bitter enemies, rivals. Need a nemesis? Want an idiot to trounce? I can provide!
- Familial relationships. If one of your characters is in need of a relative, I might be able to fill that niche! My mothers are usually badass, fathers are supportive, siblings are peculiar and kids are little hellspawn. If you want one, let me know!
- Recently I'm into writing messed up, complex and unhealthy relationships.

What are your least favorite kinds of plots and relationships to play?
- Since all I know about fighting could be condensed to 'hit the target until it dies', I don't think I'd work well with swordsmanship styles/schools type of a plot.
- Due to my lack of knowledge and familiarity with the genre, I also can't play pirate ship kind of stories. I mean, I can't tell pallograph from cabotage (literally can't - I just googled a list of nautical terms and picked two at random)
- I also suck at playing shifters (as in, werewolves and plp who shapeshift into animals). I can handle mages who can transform their body just fine, but if there is more emphasis on the animal part and pack mentality, that's another element I fail to understand

What are your favorite character types to play?
- Loyal spies and agents dedicated to a country/character.
- Royalty and nobility
- Badass female warriors
- Funny guys
- Military strategists. Of course, I have no idea about military strategy and I get my ass kicked in turn-based and RTSes alike, so that's a problem.
- Scholars
- Wizards
- Visionaries who want to improve the world.
- Older people :)
- Liars

Are you a planner or a pantser? Do you prefer to pre-plan and stick to a script when posting, or do you prefer to surprise and be surprised?
- I veer from pantser to moderate planner. I can just jump in and play without forethought or any idea how it will turn out, but I like to at least discuss what's going to happen with other players so that we are all prepared.

How do you feel about group threads?
- I love group threads! I just won't be able to do thread maintenance like poking every person involved for a response.

How often can you reply to any given thread? How long should a partner wait before nudging you for a post?
- I write fast, so unless I have absolutely no idea how to respond, I should have a reply in a few days. Feel free to nudge me at any time.
-  I am also willing to throw our characters together and just see what happens.

What is the longest you're willing to wait for a reply to a thread?
- Months. If a sudden snafu forces a player to take a temporary hiatus, I would be fine to freeze the thread until they can return.

How do you feel about instant messenger RP?
- I used to do a lot of IM RP and I enjoyed it. I can't do vocal communication, but text messages are completely okay.

How do you feel about post volleying/rapidfire RP?
(Where you and another player post rapidly back and forth in a thread with each other.)
- I love rapidfire RP. Please contact me if you'd like some!

What's your preferred posting style? Long posts? Short posts? Anything and everything?
- I like writing long posts, but frequently end up with middle length when they depend heavily on the input of another player

Any RP styles/habits that you love?
- I like working together with a player to build something together, be it a plot, a relationship between character, or something within a world.

Any RP styles/habits that you avoid?
- I prefer open communication between all players involved. I can't react well to players keeping secrets or not giving me full information.

PLAYER LIMITS

What are you limits regarding powerplay/godmoding?
(For instance, do you mind if someone grabs your character? Picks them up? Punches them?)
- The funny thing is, it varies from character to a character. Usually when I play combat characters, I'm fine with them being hurt or even maimed, but do let me know if you want to do something to my character. If you want to stab them, I can tell you the weak spot in their armour, for example :)
- Also, feel free to move my characters and have them act if my posts imply that they would (i.e. if my character asks yours to dance, you can freely describe them dancing and it should be fine)

What are your limits in regards to romantic situations?
(What are you comfortable with and not comfortable with? Do you prefer to pre-plot relationships or let them happen organically? Are you open to IC-rejection or love-triangles? Age differences? Etc.)
- My main demand is to respect a character's sexuality. I usually prefer when players approach me if they want their characters to get involved with mine, for plotting's sake, but I am not averse to unplanned things happening. I am fine with my characters being rejected, a part of a love triangle, approached by someone much older, or even being used.

What are your limits with regards to graphic content such as sex, violence, drug use, sexual assault, etc? What is your comfort level?
- As long as the player concerned and I have discussed it beforehand, I shouldn't have any problems. Violence, as long as it's discussed and all parties (players, not necessarily characters) are okay, is not a problem. With sexual assault, it varies from character to character - due to internalized sexism, I don't feel like I'm up to writing it with a female character being the victim.

What are your limits in regards to pregnancy within plots?
(Are you okay with pregnancy in plots? Miscarriages? Loss?)
- Pregnancy itself is not a problem in plots/situations where it's called for (i.e. I am playing an noblewoman who married and is expected to produce heirs), but I don't think I have the sensitivity and knowledge to respectfully portray loss, miscarriages and several aspects of parenthood, so it's not something I feel I should play. If you don't mind that, feel free to disregard.

What about healing?
(For example, a blind character magically being able to see, a scarred up character having their scars repaired, etc.)
- Depends on a character. For some characters, permanent damage is a part of their concept, and I wouldn't want it gone, but others would accept it. As usual, I would ask that a player approaches me if they want to plot something like that.

What about characters being transformed against their will? (Think vampires, werewolves, and magical spells.)
- Depends on a character. I will do my best to include such information on character sheets.

Anything else?
(Anything else you want to add that other players should know!)
- I experience a severe (and by severe, I mean that it negatively impacts my health) discomfort when dealing with anti-magic sentiment and elements. This is the only hard limit when it comes to me. I want to get over it but I am unsure of how to proceed. For now, I'm going to try getting through it by having Julius murder the causes of discomfort.
- Most of the time, an answer to these questions will be 'Depends on a character' or 'Discuss it with me and we should be fine'. I intend on expounding upon my limitations with every character I make in order to make it clear what I'm okay with, regarding them. When it comes to the other issue, I like to accommodate my fellow players and work with them. If your idea doesn't work for me, I will try to either find a way for both of us to get what we want anyway, or suggest another character that might solve this problem. I am always up for plotting with my characters and ideas you have.

Welcome Wagon / Hello!
March 22, 2018, 03:02:43 AM
Hello there! I was looking for a roleplaying forum, and was hooked by the time I read the rules. Respectful conduct towards players? No tolerance for intolerance? Using trigger warnings? I immediately felt that it's a good place to play and even if problems arise, it would be possible to discuss them and find a good solution.

I have some roleplaying and writing experience, and I like working with people to make stories together! Hope it's a start of a good adventure for everyone concerned!
