"And I'm sayin' she don't need a reason!  She'll do it anyway!"

"Tyne, I'm gonna toss ya in front of the damned thing if--"

The bushes nearby rustled and cracked and Beatrid jolted and reached for her weapon out of reflex. Seconds later, a small group of birds burst out and took to the air, no doubt startled by their approach.

Beatrid let out a low sigh and shot Tyne a sidelong look. "Lower your voice, will ya?"

When the birds took off, Michael dropped into a ready crouch, scanning the area. Beatrid already had warned the little shit to be quite, so she didn't bother rubbing that in.

Heading along, the tracks got deeper, easier to follow as they moved into the woods, "I think we're getting closer."

There was something prickling along her skin. She didn't like this place, not one bit.

Something rustled up ahead and Tyne strangled a yelp as he leaped behind a tree.  If this was the bloody creature they were after, let the other two handle it since they were so keen on risking their damned lives!  He'd slip away in the confusion if he could.

A few breathless moments later, and no devil had burst out at them.  Just some birds and Beatrid harping at him some more.  He poked his head out and nodded at her, mouth tight.  This was one order he was all too delighted to follow.  He didn't want that thing jumping out at him.

Every snapping twig and rustling leaf screamed too loudly underfoot as he shuffled slowly forward after the other two.

"Why?"  A whisper, leaning forward tower Michael so she would hear.  "What makes you say that?"

He couldn't tell anything different, not one thing.  It was just more forest.  Or it had been, before Michael spoke up.  Now every shifting shadow, every creak of wood had him jumping.

"Can't you feel that?" Michael sighed, shaking her head at Tyne. She was going to have a long talk with Beatrid, but the boy was utterly useless as a Mordecai and chances were he was going to be stripped of his rank and sent back to where he came from if he didn't get his act together.

"Pay attention and when we find this thing, you had better be ready for a fight."
