"Har har." Oscar deadpanned, giving his brother the closest he could get to a withering look. More like mildly wilting. The acceptance of the ice seemed to take a little of the tension out of him though, and he nodded absently, swiping a couple of glasses off a passing tray and giving one to Trevian. The other was half empty in one swallow. "Coming from the man who gets punched all the time. We'll have matching bruises tomorrow, just you wait and see."

And wouldn't explaining that to mother be fun? Grimacing at the mere thought of it, Oscar made to down the whole glass, then thought better of it. "That's true - at least it turned out for the best." He quirked a little smile, but there was a wistfulness behind it. "Sometimes I wish I had your confidence, Trev. It must be so much nicer, wandering through life without all that damned fretting."

Illi watched the scene unfold before her with star filled eyes. She didn't even notice Davishire's grip on her loosen. Instead she was mesmerized by the beautiful love between two people she didn't know.

The passion. The regret. The longing.

It was all so clear in how they held each other. It was so... touching.

It took all of Illi's will to hold back her tears. But she knew she couldn't cry again. Not with her promise to Dahlia and especially not with so many of her siblings in the same room. Then again, they would probably understand that she was crying because of how perfect the scene in front of her was. It was practically from a book—the greatest romance ever written.

She didn't know the story behind the lovers, but her head created one.

Looking up at Davishire again, Illi spoke in a gentle hush. "It's so romantic..." She smiled foolishly and looked back at the couple, wondering if she would ever get to learn their true story. Then she decided that she probably wouldn't, but she could write her own version of it. And it would be the best story she had ever written.

Once the whole situation finally caught up to Leif Arrant, he smiled as he held his wife.
"Let's find somewhere more private to talk.." And holding onto the small of her back, he guided her away.

Davishire, who had been staring, bristled stiffly at Jillian's comment but only commented with an idled muttered, breathy, "Yes."
Though he saw her star struck look, that was only giving him far more reasons to feel uncomfortable beside her. And it was after Leif and Valentina were off the dance floor did the Grand Duke command the dancing to begin once again. And after a moment's hesitation, the dance floor came back to life with men and women spinning around, beautiful and lovely in their sparkling dress.

Davishire watched the dancing in silence. He was numbed to it- to the romance that had unfolded, and towards his budding feelings towards the woman beside him, and as he watched the dance continue, he realized he was missing up his chance.
Keeping his posture straight- shoulders back, chin up high, and eyelids slightly lowered; he clasped his hands behind his back as he cleared his throat.
"It seems the dancing has already begun." And the pair of them were nothing but wall flowers! So turning to her, he bowed his head towards her. "Would you do me the honor of sharing in this dance? Or shall I conduct my proper apology towards you, first?"

OOC: As a note- Leif and his wife are now gone from this scene- probably to a private thread that I'll link later XD *lazy*

"Today, you call it confidence.  Tomorrow you'll be back to calling it foolishness," Trevian answered with all of his aforementioned confidence.

He should probably continue his search for Janette, since his dance partner had been reclaimed by her husband...

He glanced around, but, upon seeing neither her nor his nephew, he decided to put it off -- for just a moment.  Grinning broadly, he asked, "So, how did it go with Lady Coleridge?  Any more screaming?"

She did have quite the reputation for shrieking -- and just about everyone for every reason imaginable.

Illi sighed dreamily as the couple disappeared. Perhaps the night wasn't so bad, after all. It seemed as if those two would have a story that would last a lifetime.

And the night got even better once the music started playing again. She wanted to dance! She watched the others twirl and spin around like little gusts of wind. Illi doubted the man beside her would be one for dancing, but it would be rude to just leave him. Plus, who would she dance with? But she wanted to dance. Her wish was clear in her face, as her eyes darted from couple to couple making magic with their steps.

So when Davishire asked her to dance, she didn't even bother to respond. Instead she giggled and pulled him into the dance floor. And then she started to dance, hardly giving him any time to catch his feet. Her feet, however, fluttered across the ground as if she were born dancing. One way or another, the heels she was wearing didn't disturb her flow.

Looking up at her companion with a wide smile on her face, Illi finally said, "Why would you apologize? It was me who insulted you and my siblings who leapt upon you as if they were the wolves. So, my lord, I do believe it is my place to give you an apology." And with that, Illi temporarily stopped moving just so that she could go onto her very tiptoes and place a gentle kiss on Davishire's cheek. Then, as if nothing had happened, she continued to dance!

"Whatever it is, I wish I'd had a little of it today." Even so, Oscar had to groan at his behaviour, going predictably pink at the off-colour joke just as he'd done every single time Trevian had tried to make one. Never, not since he knew what such things meant had he ever got away without at least a blush - and damn if Trevian didn't know it.

"Trev!" He spluttered, pressing his face into his hands for a few seconds. "It wasn't like that! W-we just escorted her to the maids and they gave me a chance to change, that was all. But the poor thing was just so embarrassed - Trev, I could have sworn she was crying at one point... But I don't really think they needed me barging in any more. The Duchess, she- she was very good about it all, tried to calm her down. We talked. Just a little." He looked very much like he wanted to hide in his hands again, "She said she'd heard 'rumours' about the family, like it was all amusing."

OOC: I almost forgot about Davina and Jana.
Almost.

------------

Lady Davina's eyed over her arm candy and gave her a bit of a pout.
"Dancing was sounding wonderful, but it seems fate can be cruel sometimes." Though the woman hardly had a chance to get a word in when the events continued to unfold right before her eyes.
"Interesting.. you know.. the man kissing that woman, who is also the man who just threw the punch? That's Leif Arrant. He's publically known as an ass, and was almost killed on his wedding day for it. Rumor has it he gets around at night, but what do I know?"
And when the music started up again, her eyes alit.
"Perhaps we'll get that dance after all, my angel." And she waited for him to escort her to the floor.

While someone else was being dragged onto it.
Davishire had no trouble keeping up, considering he had longer legs than Jillian, but he was still having trouble not stumbling over his own two feet as he was dragged off.
"Really, Miss Treyburn! You are showing quite the exuberance over a meager dance!"
Though the girl seemed to be in her own little world as they began their dancing, and for the first few minutes, poor Davishire was having a difficult time swallowing down his pride, and blush.
Though when he tried to drum up a conversation over an apology, Jillian had already begun hers, and before he knew it, she sealed a kiss to his cheek.
Dumb founded into silence, the man simmered for a moment while holding the woman a bit more tensely as they danced. This was NOT how this was supposed to go! Why was she apologizing!?

And while Lord Davishire was trying to think up just what to say, another frustrated individual entered the dancing hall - a woman dressed in all pink. It seemed Lady Valia Coldridge did have some energy left within her. She was still slightly drunk, but less mopey, but still grumpy as she looked out into the ballroom with an indignant sniff. She might as well at least save face by sticking the ball out for the rest of the hours. But even still, she was simmering beneath the surface, and hadn't quite healed over from her fiasco from earlier. Though as her eyes idly scanned the crowd, she spotted the lion from earlier and turned away from him the moment her eyes met to his and she stuck her nose up in the air with a sniff. At least she was on the other side of the dance floor or she'd storm away from him ungratefully.

Trevian grinned devilishly as he sipped from his glass.  "You're the one jumping to conclusions about what I must have meant, Oscar, and that's hardly my fault."

The smile faded, then, when Oscar described the tears.  He loved women -- each and every one -- and he hated to hear of them being upset enough to warrant tears.  Oh, certainly, sometimes they burst into tears without any reason whatsoever, but, in this case, tears were certainly understandable.

"Amusing?  Our family?  What rumors has she been hearing, I wonder?"  Because, typically, rumors involving the Treyburns were neither amusing, nor appropriate for the Grand Duchess's ear.  But, then, perhaps she was just being polite...

"Well, Oscar, you've secured an introduction, in the very least, and that's better than the rest of us have done.  Mother will dote on you tomorrow, I'm sure."  He flashed his younger brother another grin as a figure in pink caught his eye -- a very angry lady, unless he missed his guess.  "Although it seems you may have made an enemy of Lady Coleridge -- not difficult to do, I assure you.  She quite frequently and loudly takes offense.  She'll be glaring at you all night unless something is done."  He set his emptied glass down on a passing tray with a soft clink.  "I'll see if I can't convince her to forgive you.  And, besides, I'd like to get in at least one dance before my face is too puffy and horrendous."

So saying, Trevian moved off into the crowd to speak to the lady in question, stopping before her with a bow as the second song of the evening began.  "Would you care to dance, my Lady?"

Meanwhile, Oscar had scarcely been left alone for a moment before he was approached, rather boldly, by the Grand Duchess herself.  "You look to be recovered," she observed with a charming, sophisticated smile.  "And I see you've even managed to convince Lady Coleridge to return to the party.  Well done."

Vivi

"Yes, yes, you and your damned innocent face." Oscar snorted from behind his own glass. "We both know you could a statue blush, if you set your mind to it."

There was uncomfortable silence for a moment, and Oscar let go a very put-upon sigh, shrugging helplessly. "God knows. She did mention how 'interesting' it would be to have us at court, but I'm not sure if she meant as guests or the resident fools."

That said, Trevian had the right of it to some extend, even if he didn't relish the thought of their doting mother. "I suppose so, though it would have surely gone more smoothly with Braxton. I swear, I was practically shaking." And speaking of which: both their heads turned as a great swathe of pink cut its way through the crowd, topped by a very angry and unfortunately familiar face. The withering glare she sent his way was a rather unpleasant surprise - although with her reputation, what else did he expect? Still, he felt he had the right to be mildly affronted by it. "Charming." He muttered under his breath. "Well, I wish you luck with that, brother. If my best efforts gained that result, I'll need all the help I can get."

He waved Trevian away with a smile, left to nurse his drink and watch his approach from the corner of the room. He was just sending up a silent prayer that he wouldn't gain a matching bruise on his other side, when he found himself ambushed by the other subject to their conversation. Suffice to say, he almost jumped out of his skin.

"Your Grace!" He dropped into an awkward half-bow, resurfacing with a slightly pink face. "I, ah... Yes, quite recovered, though I daresay the bruise will take some explaining. I, ah, I must thank you again for your help. It was... very welcome." While she was charming, he was awkwardly polite, his sweet smile fluttering uncertainly across his face. He glanced briefly over his shoulder to where Trevian was attempting to woo his potential new enemy, and he let out a wry little chuckle. "Thank you, but I can't really take the credit - her Ladyship seemed determined to fix matters on her own. Besides which, she doesn't exactly seem keen on extending the hand of friendship after what happened."

Jana led the woman towards the gathering and did a quick bow. "Milady," she said sweetly before starting a dance with her. She could dance well enough and perform some nice, gentle lifts due to the muscle she had developed. The dress, however, seemed to constantly be in the way. Jana was once again thankful that she had avoided such an annoyance.

"Leif, is it?" Jana repeated. "What a strange name. Sir Arrant... is there a reason that name rings a bell in my ears? Or is it just your melodious voice that makes everything sound as if it were meant to be?" She couldn't help but wonder if Davina really did know about Leif's ability to 'get around at night'. After all, the lady had a similar reputation.

Jana lifted her up for a quick spin before setting her feet gently upon the floor. And she couldn't help but remember when Rose used to do that to her. But that lady was all fake, doing whatever she could to get influence. Even if it meant warming up to her children in case they ever got favor from someone important in the future. Jana realized a scowl had snuck onto her face and she quickly replaced it with a warm smile.

Illi, on the other hand, had no reason to hide her emotions. Instead, she let her happiness flow out of her face like the morning sun on a cloudless day. She didn't notice the tenseness in her companion's body, for she was too busy focusing on her own moves. She kept dancing and spinning and smiling as the blood rushed warmly through her body. If everyday was like this, she wouldn't even need to read!

But she still would. She would read every morning and dance every night. It would be wonderful! Smiling up at her partner, Illi wondered what he normally did. Did he read? She assumed so, based on his careful treatment of the books. Or maybe he just admired them, too afraid to touch them. Illi giggled at her own thoughts before another, slightly more surprising, thought made its way into her head and quieted her little laughs.

What if they could read together? She had always wanted to read with someone else—someone other than her siblings, that is. Then they could discuss books and decipher meanings and figure out all the mysteries of the novels together. And they could drink hot chocolate in a small, cozy room on a cute little couch while snuggling together...

And her face became bright red.

What was she thinking?! Illi hadn't really been interested in this lord. She had simply found him different! He knew who here costume was, after all. And he loved books. Like her. But her thoughts were wondering... well, they did that quite often. It was probably nothing.

Illi pushed her strange thoughts aside, making them leave as quickly as they had come. Her blush, however, did not do the same. She managed to put on a weak smile as she continued to look up at her dancing partner, hoping that it would hide the rosiness of her cheeks.

"Miss Treyburn," Davishire said, finally breaking the silence as he noted her quietness long after his own. "Please allow me to at least take this moment to explain myself. My actions were gravely offensive, and had I the patience of a normal man, perhaps you would not have been on the receiving end of my gruff tongue. But being as things fell as they were, I hope you can at least accept my apology as sincere. I am not familiar with the delicacies of a woman, the only one I am bound to is my sister." And she of all the women was a terrible example.

And the grin on Davina's face could attest to that.
"Well, as I stated previously, he's famous for being an ass. Maybe you've hated him in your previous life?"

And while Davina was gossiping with her dance partner, Valia appeared to be acquiring one herself. Glancing over at Trevian skeptically, she wrinkled her nose but accepted.
"I suppose," she said with a sniff and stepped in closer to him, waiting for him to guide her out onto the dance floor. Might as well. Dancing was sort of why she returned to the floor, after all. Despite making a fool of herself, Valia loved the attention and thrill of dancing- and also just flirting with the boys.

Kathryn laughed softly at Oscar's description.  "Yes, that certainly describes my sister.  I'm sorry for that.  I suppose we all spoiled her a little too much."  Or a lot too much.  "That would be one of your brothers, then, leading her out onto the floor?  He's a brave man to face her wrath voluntarily."  She shot Oscar a wry grin.  She loved her sister dearly, but the rumors were certainly not unfounded.  For a moment, she remained silent, watching the pair enter the dance gracefully.  The Grand Duchess turned to her companion with a smile.  "Do you dance, my lord?"

Out on the floor, Trevian escorted Valia neatly away from the crowd.  As he began to guide her into the first steps of the dance, he murmured, "I must confess, Lady Coleridge, I am normally not so shy, but I find myself at a loss for words in your company.  I've admired you from afar for some time, and I haven't quite worked out the right thing to say to you yet...  Save that this is a great honor."

Vivi

"We can't be at fault for what other people do, Your Grace." Oscar smiled magnanimously, giving a little shrug. "Besides, the way things went earlier, I can't blame her for being upset." He turned to follow her gaze, biting his lip to keep from grinning at the sight of Trevian and Valia out on the dance floor. "Yes, that would be my favourite big brother: lots of bravery, lots of heart, not a lot of sense. She may well have met her match." Her wry grin was returned, finally starting to loosen up a little in the presence of someone so important. Her offer, true to form, had him faltering all over again.

"I- Uh..." He gathered his wits quickly, nodding as gracefully as he could manage. "Sometimes, Your Grace. I at least haven't stepped on any toes in my time."

Ivory

"Well, don't worry," Kathryn answered warmly as she extended an expectant hand out to Oscar.  "I'm an excellent dancer.  I'll make sure you look good out there."

She held her ground patiently until he began to lead her out onto the floor to join the other dancers.  As they fell into line with the rest of the floor, she picked up their conversation effortlessly.

"I must admit, I had to spend a moment educating myself on your family before I approached.  All of you have quite the reputation."  To say the least...  "You're the scholar.  I've been told you study the stars and mathematics."

Vivi

He took her hand as expected, his smile more hesitant, but no less warm for it. "Hopefully I can hold my own, but I'm sure you'll outshine me either way, Your Grace."

They stepped out onto the floor with the poise his governesses and mother had repeatedly hammered into him through childhood - though his overactive imagination kept focusing on whether or not he would trip. He didn't, thank Angsar, and they joined the dance and their previous conversation without incident.

"My siblings love their dreams and their adventures - and sometimes a little chaos, I have to admit. I'm sure I came across as the boring one. " He resisted the urge to wince at another mention of their reputation - with the way his siblings racketed about, it can't have been all good. Or even partially good. "But it's true. My father wasn't pleased - Angsar rest his soul - but there's just something so fascinating about it all." His eyes lit up behind his mask, becoming immediately more animated as they turned to his favourite subject. "It's such a complicated order of things... like pulling back the curtain to see how the world works!"

zozee9

If Davishire had noticed her strange thoughts, he showed no signs of it. She laughed quietly and to herself when he yet again called her "Miss Treyburn". First off, as she had proven that night, she wasn't exactly the lady type. Miss just didn't seem to fit very well. Also, there were so many "Miss Treyburns" in her family. For all she knew, he could've been talking to Janette!

But as he continued to speak, she once again returned to silence. Why was he apologizing? It was sweet, sure, but she wasn't at all prepared for it. Especially because she didn't quite see him as the type to apologize easily. And he wasn't even in the wrong! Well, maybe a little. But not enough that she expected him to apologize! After all, he just wanted to protect the books—and that's the exact same thing she liked to do.

His apology made her disappearing blush return as she frantically managed to say, "Oh no! You did nothing wrong. Well, not really. It's just that... you see... well... Yeah. Your temper was completely understandable. Not needed—ah, I mean, I know how to treat books seeing as I spend most of my time with them instead of with others—but understandable. You see, I like to imagine everything will always turn out perfect, and because of that I, um, don't react well to certain situations." Like people yelling at her or her harming their feelings. "And like I said earlier, it was my fault." By now her face was bright red, caused by her embarrassment on not knowing how to strew together words.

If only she could write them out... then it would all turn out perfect.

But then nobody could see it.

Unlike Illi and her frantic self, Jana knew exactly what to say. "If my previous life affects this one, that would explain why I was drawn to you immediately. No matter what I was like, it would be impossible for me not to love such a sweetness as yours."

She stopped talking for a second and pulled Davina close for the next spin. After releasing her, she continued, "However, it seems like some of these pairings at this ball look a bit... strange. While my adoration of you makes perfect sense, I do not see how many of these other pairings fit. That Love Goddess over there must have made some mistakes. In fact, what was she thinking, coming as a goddess? And who is that boy spending time with her rebellious self?"

"Hardly," Kathryn answered with a good-natured laugh.  "Just because you prefer scholarly pursuits certainly should not stop you from having adventures."  Her eyes shone, as much in reaction to his excitement as thoughts of her own past -- things she hadn't considered in some time -- suddenly came to the surface.

"I used to have quite the adventurous spirit myself.  If my parents knew half of the trouble I got into, I think I would have been locked away rather than put on parade for society."  It was obviously a topic that he was quite enthusiastic about, and she hoped not to dissuade him from sharing more.  Her adventures had certainly come to an end, but she still loved hearing about others...

visualspice

Lord Davishire took in what she said with some careful thought , though her ideals were, how you'd say... unrealistic as he gave a scoff.
"I hate to be the one to tell you this, Miss Treyburn, but life is hardly perfect. If it were, we wouldn't have wars or balls to deal with. Though I'm surprised even you would think books are perfect. I've read plenty of harrowing tails that remind me of how dark the common man can be." And at her constant reminder it was not his fault, he scowled again and tightened his grip upon her.
"A man's duty is to apologize when he was in the wrong, my lady. And my apology has already been given and can not be taken back." Why was she being so stubborn? It made him so angry!

Though someone else was becoming less angry while Davishire was stewing inside- for Lady Valia was shameless for enjoying a good flirt- and Trevian Treyburn was famous for giving it.
"I have heard of your reputation enough, suffice to say, your words do not surprise me. But I won't stop you from continuing. This night has been harrowing, and I won't lie in saying I do appreciate a compliment or two." But even at that,s he gave a bit of a haughty sniff to the air, hoping the man had a bit more to his tongue than that as the pair continued to dance.

And while Valia was looking for amusement, Lady Davina was thoroughly amused. She caught Lady Valia and Trevian Treyburn dancing about and smirked.
"Oh, but don't you see, my angel? They are both a pair of hearts..." And here, her eyes shined, but she pressed into her gossip by saying in a lowered voice.
"Word has it Lady Valia is quite the handful- and Trevian Treyburn has just the right tongue- I do not foresee a terrible match there, but rather, I'd be disappointed to hear if Lord Treyburn did not take advantage. After all, it's common knowledge that girl's marriage is on the outs. Despite giving Lord Coleridge an heir, there is talk about her infidelity- though as far as I know, it hasn't quite yet been proven. It's why the Goddess's husband is not here this evening and she had come alone."
CHECK OUT MY LATEST SITE EVENT!
The Never King- a king erased from history because of his dabblings in dark magic (among other things...) suddenly because a present day problem when an unlikely group of adventurers 'awakens' him from the grave. You can read more about the event on the plotting page here and information page here!

I ran the Connlaothian civil war. For more info, check out it's page here. The war has now turned into a 'Cold War' with it's plotting page found here. It's no longer a huge site wide event but the scars are there.

Trevian's answering grin was immediate but no less charming for its roguish qualities.  Oh, so  she had heard of him...

"I'm flattered the exploits of a mere soldier have reached such lovely ears," he answered.  His hand lifted to brush her hair back, fingertips tracing the shape of her ear lightly.  "Although I'm not sure if mere words could ever describe your perfection, if I can bask in your smile for but a moment..."  His finger followed the curve of her ear to her jaw and followed its shape to her chin.  "...I think not even the sunrise on a dewy morning could hold any beauty for me any longer."

"I suppose not." Oscar mused, turning them both with the flow of the dance. "I don't measure up to some of the others, I'm sure, but the Dean would probably disagree. He's chased me off the solarium roof more times than I can count. I keep telling him if he'd just update the observatory, I would have to..." He paused. "Although thinking about it, chances are I still would."

"I suppose that's part of the fun of growing up in high society. Normal childhood mischief becomes that much more clandestine when you're supposed to be all proper." He had absolutely no idea why the Duchess showed such an interest in his and his sibling's childish antics (both as children and adults, sadly), but her open smile seemed to pull the words from him, even as he tried his best not to drag his siblings names into the mud. "But I don't know a noble who hasn't rebelled at some point in their lives. Running wild as children, falling in love with the wrong person... Even my studies count."
