Her caravan was headed north, its banner's carrying the proud deep red and gold colors of her house name. And though not as lengthy as some, Lady Horaea Gray's numbers were nothing to scoff at. Easily a dozen carts and covered pulleys moved along in a studious line that cut a path well North from the dusty fields and reeds of Essyrn, to the long, tall gold grasses of the plains. The out cropping of red plateaus began to dot along the horizon, an impressive sight to see. But not even the great pleateaus could hold a candle to how large the Draconi mountains looked, even this far away.

"They look almost purple," Lady Gray mused as her men had set up camp for the evening. "It's been years since I've seen them like this, and I had been so young, it didn't quite feel real."
A cup of water began to steam over the fire and the woman waited lazily for her servant to make her tea. The sun was beginning to set, casting not only the mountains of Adela into a purplish haze, but the plains and skies around her, too.

She had two cups of tea that night before retiring, deciding she wanted to finish the novel she had started. So perhaps it was the type of story she read, or the extra cup of tea, but her night was fitful, and full of strange yet fascinating things that not only intrigue her, but frightened her clean to her bones.

There were colors, and horses, so many wild horses galloping through the plains. And behind them they lit a trail of fire, and when she woke, she was in a sweat. Her white night gown clung to her body, the dying flames of her camp fire within her tent hugging her form and exposing every suctioned inch where the fabric bled translucently, leaving nothing to the imagination.

But that was of little consequence to the thirst she desired and the fresh air, to breath. She stumbled outside of her camp and welcomed the cold night air of the plains. It made her shiver, but it also helped cool her clammy skin. After a moment, she raked a hand through her now moppy locks of golden hair and peered back to her camp site. She hadn't walked that far from it, knowing it was never wise no matter how many men she traveled with. Some were hired servants, but most had been slaves- or rather, still were.

It was strange, as she studied the other open tents where her men slept, the eerie glow of her slave's collars send an unnerving chill to her bones. She thought back to her dream of the wild horses, of the trail of fire they left in their wake before making her way towards her tent. She awoke her servant who fetched her water, and she guzzled down a good deal of it before thanking them and returning to her bed. But she was fitful the rest of the night, and found herself simply lying there and watching the sun rise over the Serha.

They still had a long journey. Mormont Thespen was to meet them at Lantis Outpost. It was perhaps another ten days journey from here. It reminded her how large the world was, and for a second, she felt as insignificant as the fleas in the sand.

Their journeys continued, and were generally uneventful- somethign she was quite thankful for. For even though she had plenty of men who were paid well to protect her, the Serha plains was known for it's many wild tribes that fought and bled over these lands- Not to mention the thieves.

Day four they were met with a flashing sky, the day having begun dismal and grey. And with no mountains to keep back the winds, they were terrible, and soon the caravan was loosing many tents and supplies. In the desert, the winds were harsh, especially a dust storm- but the way the sky was ever swelling made her wish the black were dust, rather than a terrifying cyclone that roared into life.

Never having seen such a thing in all of her days, she panicked, as did most of her men. They watched as the thing tore across the grounds and gobbled up the few sparse trees in it's wake. And it's path was unpredictable, wild...
At one moment it was heading due north, then a second later, it roared and curved around, and seemed to charge right for them.

Over half of her caravan scattered, crying to the Gods and pleading for their life. The cyclone never came to take them, but the sky pelted them with hail, and the lightning grew worse, cracking over the skies like raw whips of light and just as the cyclone seemed to gobble the world in on itself. Then it was over. And Evelyn Gray found herself with only three carts left men to man, and the rest, all abandoned, or ruined by the storm.

It was a bitter sweat moment, and was a very real moment to remind her of her own mortality. And once her wits were regained, she gathered what she could of her men and the cargo, and pressed on. But they wouldn't get far. The plains seemed to smoke, a strange occurrence that had her and her men choking. By the time they realized there was a wild fire brewing on the horizon, a wind was already coaxing it in their direction- and soon all she found was that she and the few slaves and hired arms could do-

Was run.

Run she did, light boots feeling every heavy root and hard rock beneath her. Her frail white dress fluttered and caught in the smoke, making her sweat all the more and nearly plastering her dress to her form. But she didn't run for long, having noticed more fires before them and more smoke rolling in, choking out most of the breathable air.

Her eyes burned and she realized she couldn't see. And just when it seemed all hope was lost, she heard a cry from one of her men-
Ahzaruhk; a young slave, barely the same age as she, who was crying and calling for Evelyn and the others to come.

He found water. A river. Clear air.

Desperate for it all, she rushed through the sharp root trail, blocking her face the best she could from the burning and suffocating smoke. Still the smoke burned too much for her to see, so she ran towards the voice, ignorant of all else before she nearly tripped over Ahzaruhk who caught her and smiled.

"The river... Master, please." And he gestured to what lay just below the valley beside him.
She could barely make it out, and were her eyes already not swollen from smokey tears, she'd cry tears of joy. And soon she and those that remained, barely seven of them left of all the caravan, and they were immersing themselves in the cool and freeing waters.

The skies behind them still burned of smoke, but dark clouds were rolling in and there was the promise of rain. Evelyn took a moment to thank whatever Gods she could for that day. Though much was lost, she was still alive. To think, she had worried so much about bandits or tribesman. SHe hadn't even considered once that the weather could have been the thing to do her in.

She told her men to relax and they'd travel at nightfall. By the time they returned, she promised them three times the gold she originally had planned, and extra luxuries for her few remaining slaves.

She owed them all so much for remaining by her side, and as they all wallowed in the waters and reveled in the fresh air and cool harbor this little lake afforded, Evelyn began to take note of the uniqueness of this little watering hole and all of the strange carvings in the rocks.
One in particular, she found herself swimming up to, appeared to be a man on a horse. But the longer she studied it, she began to see it wasn't a man on a horse, but a man who was a horse....
A centaur, if her memory served her correctly. A fascinating thing to see. Never had she seen one in real life before. Then again, this was a carving. The real thing... well, if some still existed (which she believed they very well did), she knew would be even more captivating of a thing.

But it was getting late, and she was wet and pruning in the waters. She supposed she ought to corral her men and organize some sort of a hunting party. But as she turned around to observe her men, the looks on their faces had her smile fading away.

And slowly she turned around, and that's when she saw him-
a proud man of all muscle, but with no legs of a man at all-
For from his waste down he possessed the powerful body of a horse.

The week had been rather eventful for his tribe. On the first day, their scouts reported that a large caravan had just entered the fringes of their territory. It was traveling paralell with their slab of land. Needless to say, the discovery of such a large treasure trove for loot set the tribe abuzz.

On the first day, Dehak walked out of his tent into a large gathering of Warriors. All were clamorongnexcitedly around a scout. Dehak pushed his way to the front and confronted the scout directly. The scout was a young colt, on his way to becoming a Warrior.

"What's happened?" Dehak said, looking around at the crowd.

"A caravan, Hoof Leader," the scout said.

"Largest caravan I've ever seen. Twelve wagons, easily a hundred men with it, a good half of which are mounted."

Dehak was quiet for a few moments, before he left. He galloped over to the massive tent in the center of their camp, the place where the Hoof Leaders, Chiefs, and Warchief all met to discuss strategies and oversee raids. It was a boring meeting, and the higher ups decided that they should be bolstering their defenses for a war they had planned rather than risk any warriors.

It was decided the caravan would be spared.

Dehak decided elsewise, and he set about organizing a couple Hoofs to go and take the caravan. He knew that by the traditions of his people, success here would be a great boon for the tribe, and that as long as he returned successful, he would be hailed a great warrior.

By the second day, he had his men organized and they were on the move. The plains were great for galloping, and by the end of day two, they were tracking the caravan. A scout who had gone with them reported another prize in the caravan: a beautiful human woman who seemed to be in charge of the whole caravan.

This only motivated the men further. It was decided between Dehak and the other Hoof leaders that whorver got the most kills would keep the human.

They tracked the carsvan for two more days, waiting for an opportunjty to strike; when the storm came, however, nobody was prepared for it. They all celebrated their luck, a storm from the heavens making their job so much easier! It was like a gift from the gods.

They spent the next day cleaning up any stragglers left behind by those who fleed the campsite and scavenged all the supplies from the wrecked wagons and carts.

It was the beginning of day five, and Dehak was walking with a purpose. He was leading his Hoof on an attack. The remaining survivors from the caravan. It was part of a large attack, with Dehak's Hoof leading the charge.

He was still walking when the woman came out of the lake, and when she turned around, he stopped. He raised hos warhammer to the sky, and bellowed out a great war cry. From the forest behind Dehak, a hundred of his fellow warriors came pouring out from hiding, and Dehak himself started running forwards, towards Evelyn.

Her cry came too late, but she was at least able to jump out of the way of the galloping centaur. Scrambling in the waters, she attempted for shore, but found herself between a horseman and a Cliffside boardering the small lake.

Dehak ran past Evelyn, leaving her to be cornered by one of his warriors as he led the charge into the camp. One of Evelyn's soldiers stood to try and meet Dehak's charge, but Dehak reared slightly and slammed into him, trampling the man underfoot without breaking his momentum. A more prepared soldier tried to bring Dehak down with a spear, but he made the mistake of trying to go for Dehak's upper body. Dehak ducked under the spear's point and thrust the haft of his warhammer forward, knocking the man to the ground and buckling his breastplate.

Dehak raised his warhammer, and the soldier raised his spear to defend himself. The hammer snapped the spear in half and crushed the man's chest cavity. He spasmed once, before death claimed him. Dehak looked around at the ensuing battle, hammer held at the ready as he looked over the situation.

Turning around, she saw one of the horsemen come at her. Panicked, she attempted desperately to climb up the wall, but to no avail. The man was already upon her before she even got half of her body out of the water. But when he yanked her from the cliffface, he was not prepared for when she tore look a sharp heel of rock, and jerked suddenly in his arms, striking the rock off the side of the centaurs head which sent him off balance and Evelyn back into the waters.

While the centaur was distracted, she dove as deep as she could into the lake bed, pausing only a moment to look up at the world all above her, and knowing she had little options but to resurface now when her air supply waned.

The stricken centaur regained focus too late to see where Evelyn hit the water, but he definitely heard her splash down. Due to his bodily structure, he couldn't exactly bend down to search for her, but he started prodding at the lake bed with the bottom of his spear.

Meanwhile, more horns sounded off, and the other Hoofs joined in on the attack. At this rate, the defenders would be overwhelmed fast.

visualspice

The Hoofs had already taken down her remaining fighters, leaving just the handful of slaves who remained. None were trained I combat, and cowered away from the advancing horsemen as they were surrounded.

When Evelyn resurfaced far enough away from the spear, her eyes immediately went to her group is slaves. Thresha was among the group, her most loyal of slaves. She had been trained well and was owned by Lady Gray since a young age. The pair practically grew up together and at times were much like sisters. Even still, Thresha still wore the heavy metal collar that the cowering brothers around her did, just to make no mistake she was a slave.

With a noise, she stumbled out of the lake, white dress and yellow hair plastered to her body as she managed to push her way through and throw herself in front of her slaves.

"No!" she cried out, eyes flashing boldly as she threw her arms out protectively, as if her presence might spare them the spear. Even as tall enough as a woman as she was, she was still dwarfed by the presence of Dehak and his men. And though greatly fearful she could die, she wasn't about to die a coward, and let her poor slaves become skewered without some, sort of a fight.

But there were so many of them, and their numbers overwhelmed her. And she knew this was the end.

It was certainly a bleak looking situation. Cowering, unarmed slaves, surrounded on all sides by fierce warriors. They'd stopped advancing to surround them, but just barely. By their hollering, snarling, and weapon-brandishing, it seemed the throngs of raiders were but a single word away from tearing them all to shreds.

Dehak made his way to the front of the mob, his outwardly calm appearance denoting him as a cut above the eager, rambunctious hordes he commanded. He looked down at Evelyn, at his prize, and he grinned. The three other Hoof Leaders came up next to him, looking slightly grumpier.

Reshdo, a smaller male Centaur armored in nothing but war paint and armed with a spear, groaned, and the others just looked bored in general. The others were Jeznur, a fat-on-muscles male with full armor, shield, and axe, and Gralla, a burly female wearing a breastplate and wielding two sabers.

"I thought there'd be so many more," Jeznur said, and Dehak nodded.

"Disappointing, but I'll take it over nothing," Dehak commented. He looked down at Evelyn again. Gralla stepped forwards a bit.

"By the time I got into the camp, all the soldiers were dead. Did any of us actually get any kills?"

The Hoof Leaders echanged looks. Resdho raised a single finger. Jeznur stayed still, and Dehak raised two. Reshdo sighed, and Dehak grinned.

"Pretty one's mine, then. Don't look so glum, Reshdo. I can share." Dehak said, and he looked to the other Hoof Leaders.

"Keep the women for your warriors, kill the men."

Evelyn gasped, realizing the majority with her that remained were men. And men she didn't want to see getting flayed. Reaching for the knife under her skirts, when one of the centaurs came for them, she was quick to throw herself in front, and trying to appear as commanding and strong as possible, in spite of the odds, and in spite of herself. She had no real means to defend these slaves of hers, but they were still hers and she felt she owed them all of what she had.

She must've surprised the horseman coming to snatch one of her slaves away, cause her strike was quick and unseen, like a sand colored viper. The centaur reared back, say the trickle of blood on his arm then turned to observe Evelyn's long, thin knife. But he had his spear pointed right at her belly as he advanced upon her with a laugh.

"This one's got some spirit in her, Dehak!" he went on, his laughter gruff. "I might want a go at her, just to watch her cry when we breed."

Evelyn cringed, but kept her head held high, even as the spear was against her belly.

"There will be no go at me, or the killing of my men!"s he snapped, finding a strange strength behind her voice inspite of the terrifying plight before her. "I am Lady Evelyn Heraea from House Gray in Essyrn, princess among merchants and these are my property. Do not touch them or harm them or else!"

There was a short silence, before most of the warriors abruptly broke into snickering and jeering. It was clear that absolutely nobody here respected her position. There were also some inquisitive looks, as nobody in the Bloody Brays had ever even heard of a place called Essyrn.

"Well, then you've found yourself in quite the predicament, Lady Evelyn," Dehak said, canting forward. Her slaves cowered back further, especially those that had witnessed Dehak's brutality firsthand.

"Because The Bloody Brays don't give a shit about your titles, or your property. You're on our land now!" Dehak said, and his warriors gave a small cheer at the words.

"Your supplies are ours, Your slaves are ours. You--"

Dehak pointed at himself.

"Are mine. Take them!"

The warriors advanced, intent on seperating the male slaves from the female ones. Dehak himself advanced on Evelyn, watchful of that knife of hers, ready to swat it away or to grab the hand wielding it.

Evelyn paled. She knew it was a futile attempt to save their lives, and knew she was in a place far from home, so when the shadow of Dehak loomed over her, she stepped back, guarding herself carefully with the knife as she warned, "Stay back." But even as her grip tightened on her blade, she felt her grip trembling with nerves, and her hand, sweaty.

"Or what?" Dehak said, leering at her. He took a single step closer, and his hand lashed out. He wasn't aiming for her arms, but rather he intended to slap some proper fear and respect into her. He was fast, so deceptively fast for someone his size, that the strike would be barely but a blur to Evelyn's untrained eyes.

As he moved to strike, she flinched and felt the slap,a nd her grip on her dagger loose, and it was knocked to the ground.

With one movement, Dehak stomped on Evelyn's dagger, snapping the long blade and bending the hilt to near unusability. He reached down, grabbed her by the scruff off her robe, and lifted her clean up off the ground.

"What happened to all of that confidence?" Dehak growled. By that point, the slaves had been seperated, and the women were being restrained with ropes and chains. The men were all being put on their knees.

"You humans never learn. We're just going to have to keep teaching you this lesson until you do."

Evelyn gasped as she felt herself being lifted off of the ground. Kicking her legs and squirming, she demanded, "Let me go, you animal!"

"Shut your mouth, human," Dehak growled, and he shook her hard enough to give her whiplash.

Dehak could hear the begging and whimpering of the male slaves, and he turned his head. A warrior was approaching all the kneeled males, holding a long, wide sword in his hands.

They were being put to death.

Despite her shaking, she turned to see the male slaves being lined up for the slaughter. Desperately, she tried to reach for Dehak. "Please! Show them mercy!" she begged.

"Why should I?" Dehak said.

"So many on two legs will slow us down, and besides, the Bloody Brays have no use for your luggage carriers."

The executioner raised his blade, aiming the strike on the first slave in line. The man couldn't stop blubbering, grasping for anything that could save his life.

"So you'd murder out of inconvenience?" she spat. "What an honorless code."

Dehak laughed.

"An interesting choice of words, for someone who was so eager to jump to the rescue before."

Dehak waved a hand, and the sword came down. Rather than a clean decapitation, the poor man was split right down the middle, killed instantly. A few slaves in line vomited, others just lost all semblance of calm and broke down into tears.

"Maybe you'll choose better words for the next one?"
