Naovi ran as fast as her legs could carry her, heart pounding and sweat slicking her skin. Oh, these people were nasty and persistent! And all over nothing! Who knew that a simple magic trick in a tavern would cause such a ruckus. And then they had the nerve to call her such terrible names, like witch and monster and whore--and oh, that last word was especially hilarious, considering the man who'd wielded it had been very eager to go upstairs with her...until she'd decided to show off with a parlor trick. Funny how that worked!

Humans! They had such short memories for such an intelligent, sentient species.

Hollering up a storm, cries of fear and cries of anger, they'd come for her, calling for the guard for aid, and for some Morde-something to come help. She didn't know what they were talking about, and it didn't matter. Foxes never went into a den without knowing where all the exits were, and though they'd blocked the door, she knew there were others. With the help of her illusions, she "vanished" into a cloud of smoke and cloaked herself in the mundane disguise of a serving wench, and by the time they figured out her smokescreen was fake (and thus killed the illusion completely, for they were only as strong as one's belief in them), she was already upstairs, through a room, and climbing out a window.

By then, the guardsmen had come--and for some reason, her magic had ceased to work.

She'd had no choice but to escape the good old fashioned way.

Running.

Good thing foxes were good at that.

She didn't know where she was going, or where to go, but she was nothing if not fast and she had the stamina to match. It was only when she heard horses behind her that she began to truly worry; this town was small, which meant there were no good places to hide, and she wasn't as familiar with town spaces as she was with the wilderness. But the land wasn't very good for hiding, either. There were no large forests near, save for copses here and there, and the land was so flat. But after hiding in an alley for a bit, listening for signs of her pursuers, she took her chances when the coast was clear and made a break for it.

She had been running ever since, pausing here and there to hide among bushes or clumps of trees--until a juicier target presented itself.

A lonely farmhouse in the distance.

It would provide better cover than out here, where she felt far too exposed. And so, panting, she bolted for it. The moon was high in the sky by that point, and she was exhausted and hungry and sore. It had been a long time since she'd had to do anything like this.

By the time she reached the farm, her feet were dragging, steps heavy. She'd lost her shoes somehow, and her feet were cut and bloody, her dress dirty and torn from snagging on bushes, leaves sticking up in her hair. And her tails--she didn't even want to think of the state they were in. Covered in burrs, if her dress was any indication.

Eugh...

There was a barn on the property, and she went for that instead of the house proper. No need to alert anyone to her presence. She could stay there for the night, and leave before anyone was any wiser.  It was beneath her, to be sleeping in a barn; by rights, the owners should let her into their home with open arms and lend her a bed! But she was too tired to barter or socialize, or deal with any potentially negative reactions, so barn it was.

Tiredly, Naovi circled the building, until she found that the owners had left one of the windows open, either intentionally or by mistake. Perfect. Jumping up, she grabbed the edge and hauled herself up and over, tumbling through the window and landing in a pile of hay with a grunt. Ow! "Roll in the hay", humans always said, referring to sexual acts. What a phrase! She certainly hoped no one actually mated in the hay, because it hurt, stabbing through her clothes and poking her bare skin. Grimacing, she rose from the hay and brushed herself off, then looked around for any spare blankets she could use to protect herself.

She found a few good, thick ones and laid them out over it, then crawled into her makeshift bed and curled up. Tired, achy, and thoroughly confused by the night's events, it wasn't long before she drifted off into a deep sleep, her three tails curled around her legs. They were, indeed, full of burrs, and she could feel them scratching against her skin, but right then she couldn't be assed to care.

She'd deal in the morning.

Zacharias kept his head in his hands, tightly grasping his curly hair in frustration. Placed with its pages wide open, a simple and ragged children's book sat on a desk in front of him. Next to it, a luminous flame burned on a single candle that occasionally got blown out by the wind. Zacharias glared at the pages with indignation as he repeatedly tried to make sense of its seemingly random scribbles. It just didn't make any amount of sense to him that these curved doodles and lines had specific meanings behind them. Some symbols had different meanings while others had the same? That made even less sense to him.

Eventually, Zacharias had grown tired of even trying. Why bother reading when you could be working on the field with a shovel? That's what his father would say, and Zacharias believed every word that he had ever said.

He slowly pushed himself up from his chair and stared out of his window to see the moon high in the sky. It had wounded his pride severely that he wasn't able to do what a child would do, but he pushed those thoughts elsewhere. He had to think of something else before he punched his window. Window... had he closed all the windows in the barn?

It would be a shame if some rabid animal were to jump into the barn, Zacharias thought to himself.

He gingerly lifted the small dish that held his candle and exhaled deeply. Careful not to make any ruckus that would wake his mother, Zacharias shifted his way out of his room and took no notice to the small coat hanging by the door like a clothed ghost. The night's cold bites and clawing might be just what he needed at this hour.

It was too dark for his taste, but Zacharias knew his way around his property by now since he had taken such a responsibility to care for it. After a short couple of minutes, he started taking a small survey around the barn. All seemed in perfect order until he reached the end of his little patrol. One window was wide open and Zacharias felt a small rush of satisfaction as he discovered it. Zacharias grew a gentle smirk on his face as he went to close it, but a sudden thought came to him.

Why not sleep in the barn tonight? It seemed like the perfect stress reliever that he so desperately needed.

Perhaps there were perks to living in a lonely farmhouse.

Yet, as Zacharias looked at the open window, he slowly decided that maybe it wasn't worth the effort to haul himself through it. Especially when he had a candle that could light his entire barn on fire with even the tiniest of stumbles. He hated the mental image of his father's perfect barn being burned down by his own clumsy son just because he wanted to sleep in it.

Holding in a disappointed sigh, Zacharias jumped to close the window before leaning heavily against the barn's wall and slowly sliding down it until he reached the ground with a small thud. Zacharias set down the candle when he felt his head start to drop. Despite the cold wind and odd position, Zacharias felt the warm feeling of sleep begin engulf him like a welcomed and warm breeze.

He had already made it so far. So, why not just sleep where he sat now?

Morning came, light filtering through the window above her in an annoying, warm beam of light that, of course, decided to shine directly on her face. At first, Naovi tried to ignore it, slinging an arm across her eyes and rolling over, but the damage was already done--she was awake, and there was no going back to sleep now.

Besides, she needed to get going, she realized with a jolt that sat her upright. She hadn't meant to sleep this long! She'd meant to leave before sunrise!

Rising to her feet, she winced; resting had let the soreness sink in more, and her cuts were stinging. She stretched, feeling her spine pop and crack, and did a hasty job of yanking out the worst of the burrs in her tails and clothing. Then, reaching up, she went to climb through the window she'd come through--

And found it shut?

Errr...what?

So someone had come by while she'd been asleep. But they hadn't thought to look inside.

Thank the gods.

Laughing softly at her wild luck, she reached up and shoved the window back open, then hauled herself up and through and down--

And landed with a hard thud on something bony but eerily warm and fleshy, and with wide, shocked eyes she stared at the human she'd just plopped herself onto.

...Oops.

Dreams often flocked to Zacharias when he slept, but tonight he was greeted with the solemn void of nothing when he shut his eyes. Unforeseen by him, the tranquil feeling of sleep would be snapped in half by an abrupt flare of pain that washed over him.

Zacharias let out a scream for no exact reason other than the suddenness of... whatever just happened.

He instantaneously shuffled away when he felt the weight disappear as if something had jumped off of his crumpled body. Zacharias began to clumsily crawl away on the ground, but paused with a sharp inhale of breath when he felt pain.

It felt like a fire had broken out on his wrist.

Zacharias' heart was racing, his mind was cluttered with confusion, and all of his instincts told him to get rid of the pain. He desperately grasped his burning wrist with his free hand and felt the irregular bend of his wrist.

His heart dropped as he realized that it was broken.

Unlike himself, Zacharias acted with impulsiveness and focused intently on the snapped wrist while trying not to cry out from the searing pain. Everything was just happening so fast--too fast! With his eyes tightly screwed shut and his mind concentrated on the sickening bend of his wrist, the farm boy began to feel the burning agony alleviate from him. Tears of reassurance threatened to break through as he rolled onto his back and felt his wrist slowly shift back into its rightful place.

Relief swam through his body as he tenderly let go of his wrist.

Then, the relief morphed  into the crushing feeling of terror as Zacharias had realized what he had just done. He had so easily broken his promise to swear off of magic. Zacharias opened his eyes with the oddest feeling of both relief and horror that merged together. Horror rapidly vanquished relief when his quivering gaze rested to what had fallen onto him.

Or rather, who had fallen onto him.

The something Naovi fell on turned out to be a someone, judging by the scream following a loud, sickening snap. It all happened so quickly, the world a blur of confusion and pain as old and new bruises were jabbed and jostled, and a thought flashed through her mind that maybe she'd had the bad luck of breaking some poor sod's neck. Bad timing; unfortunate, really. But then the person she'd landed on rolled backwards, falling onto his back, and Naovi, unbalanced and disoriented, flopped with him and landed, sprawled, against his chest.

"Ow...jeez..." she groaned, as she pushed herself upright and scowled down into the face of a human who was quite alive, and looking understandably bewildered--and strangely horrified. Horrified? Surprise, she could understand. But horror? It wasn't like she was a monster! She was quite attractive, if she did say so herself (and she emphatically said so, in fact). Really, what was his problem?

"I think the ground would have been softer than you," she said, brushing at the front of her dress. "You're a terrible catcher, you know. You ought to work on that."

Confusion was thrown in with his fear and relief, forming a new hideous brew of emotions that Zacharias didn't even know existed. This person just fell out of the sky and snapped Zacharias' wrist in one swift motion. Now they were trying to make pleasant conversation with him? And why was he tempted to make conversation back? He was half-convinced that this was part of the strangest dream he's ever had, but the pain and emotions felt so real.

Dazed, Zacharias shoved the person off of him with what might have been a bit too much strength. At this point, he had already made so many spontaneous choices that drove him onto such a ragged path. It was too early for him to be making smart and cognitive decisions.

He stared at the person with utter perplexity as his mind was whirling to find his tongue and form sentences. Nothing seemed to make sense to him anymore. With a solid shake of his head, Zacharias began shifting his confusion and other emotions into something slightly resembling curiosity. Had this person really just fallen from the sky? Had they seen him use his magic? The last question made his stomach twist into knots.

He had to say something-- anything. He couldn't just silently stare and wait for this stranger to say his sentences for him.

"Who... who are you?" Zacharias apprehensively sputtered out.

"Oof!"

Just like that, the man had the gall to shove her off of him! With a yelp, Naovi toppled onto the ground beside him, but she was quick to sit back up on her knees and level a glare at him, all three tails fluffed and bristling and, unbeknownst to her, now poking out of her dress.

"What was that for?! Rude! You don't just push a lady! You're supposed to help her up!" She let out a loud and exaggerated huff, puffing out her chest and frowning "I'm Naovi, and you owe me an apology for being so mean!"

Zacharias couldn't seem to spit out any words.

After a moment of repeatedly opening his mouth without saying anything, he pushed himself up into a sitting position and scratched his head. He just needed a couple of seconds to process what was happening without having someone nagging by his ear.
Visibly confused, Zacharias managed to speak.

"Okay, sorry!" He bit out, sounding more annoyed than apologetic. Despite his aggravation, he had to admit that maybe he could have been a bit more polite. More sincerely, he tried again. "Sorry."

So, he apologized. Now what? To Zacharias, making a conversation was like trying to write a well-structured novel-- which was horrible for him because he didn't know how to write or read. Why did this have to happen to him?

After an awkward beat, Zacharias figured that maybe looking at this person would make this situation go by more easily. Yet, as he made eye contact, he realized that looking at people only made it more difficult to talk to them. Quickly, he began speaking again.

"Yeah-- My name is Zach--." His fumbling was cut short when his eyes fell onto three bristling objects. Were... were those tails? Did this person have tails? And three of them?

Maybe he was dreaming.

Naovi was about to snap something back, demand he stop acting like a fool and finish his sentences properly, but she paused when she noticed how strangely he was looking at her. Or rather, beyond her. Eyebrows raising in alarm, fearing that maybe someone was behind her like her pursuers, she followed his eyes and peeked back behind herself and--

...Oh.

She gave her tails a little swish, frowning, and then quickly tucked them back beneath her dress with a little huff. Turning back to the man, she put her hands on her hips and frowned. "What? Never seen a fox tail before?"

This was just too much for Zacharias.

What sort of loopy land had he stepped foot in?

"What are you?" He whispered. A part of him was in terror of whatever answer he would receive from this... thing. She looked human, yet she had the tails of a fox-- three of them! This wasn't right, not in the slightest!

Suspicion and curiosity shone in his ash colored eyes. Fumbling to his shaky feet, he spoke again, this time much louder. Wanting to repeat his question, Zacharias narrowed his eyes to thin slits as he stared at this strange being. Again, he looked down to his wrist and twisted it around. A part of him wished that this was all some kind of terrifying fever dream.

His voice melancholy, yet inquisitive, he repeated his question. "What are you?"

Rhindeer

Another huff. Naovi puffed out her chest, frowning up at him. "I'm Naovi!" she said, as though the answer were obvious. Hadn't she told him that before?

With a roll of her eyes, she hopped to her feet--and winced, her soreness more pronounced now than it had been when she'd been on the run. But she shook it off, not wanting to show weakness, and put her hands on her hips as she stared him down, even though she had to look up. "You're very rude, you know. Here I am, a damsel, clearly in distress! You should be offering to--"

She paused suddenly, eyes going wide, and snapped a look away from the man and toward the copse in the distance. Her hearing was sensitive, and she could swear she heard the baying of a hound. Were they tracking her still? Her belly twisted at the thought, a chill shooting down her spine, and she looked back to the man, expression softening.

"I need help," she said, quieter, and stepped closer to him. "Hide me!"

Zacharias shook his head with uncertainty. Her answer didn't bring him any closer understanding what kind of creature she was. This Naovi was a real bemusing, Zacharias figured as she assailed him with an onslaught of comments that he didn't take much consideration to.

"I need help. Hide me!" She had said. He was, at first, very opposed to this idea of hiding a possible demon. Yet, something unnerved him about her tone. Fleeting seconds passed until he crossed his arms and prepared himself to say a curt rejection.

However, the sudden barking of a canine in the distance made him flinch. A dog? There weren't many who could afford those in his area. More likely, a savage dog would come and terrorize the local farms. Frowning skeptically. Zacharias looked over to this Naovi and then back to the distant thicket. As he realized that the barking came closer, he abruptly understood that they were after this girl. Why?

Three fox tails. Magic. Was it possible?

He had to know. This was a chance that he might never get again, but was he willing to break the law for it?

Before he knew what he was saying, words were already spewing out of his mouth. "Get in the barn."
