Beccalynn looked around at her establishment. It had taken her a long time to set it up, but she now had her father’s pizza business up and running. The door was held open buy a log she had decided not to put into the fire and though there was still a bit of a chill In the air left from winter, it was hot in the kitchen and she often had to step out back for some air.
She sighed and wiped her brow with her apron. It was the third day of business and the only customer that had come to grace her was a frail old woman who was sitting at the rough wooden table in the small, cramped dining area. Leaning up against the wooden preparation table, she crossed her arms. Zhan twitched in his sleep in the far corner of the kitchen. Becca smiled. Perhaps he could see things in his dreams.
A few curls sprung out from the cloth she had placed atop her head to keep them away from the food and she pushed them back under. “Do you suppose leaving really was a bad idea?
Zhan opened one eye, though he couldn’t see out of it anyway. Still, he let her know she was awake. The old woman didn’t seem to be able to hear her, so she walked over to her pet, crouched down and scratched behind his ear. “I don’t think Papa’s business is as popular here as it is back home. Zhan let out a small woof of encouragement. Beccalynn smiled and stood. She had come here to escape her mother’s neglecting ways, keep her father’s business alive, and to chase her own dreams. She couldn’t possibly give up after three days.
She walked out into the dining area and glanced at the overcast skies. The city bustled with people of all ages and creatures alike. It was a clean city and she was glad. She could have done so much worse. Many people she had heard stories of leaving ended up in slums and makeshift houses living lives that even criminals shouldn’t live.
Zhan barked to her and she hurried back behind the counter, being sure not to tear her forest green dress on anything. It was a simple dress, fit for a simple woman, and she didn’t need much else. It had a modest bodice and a full skirt. It was all she could afford, but it suited her well.
She snapped, signaling the black wolf to come to her and he complied. He moved slowly, not yet used to the new space, smelling out and allowing his whiskers to tell him where to go. He reached the security of her arms. She ran her fingers through his fluffy ebon fur and nuzzled his neck. It was too hot by far to cuddle like this due to the roaring fire of the of the oven, but she didn’t care. He needed her.
Zhan pulled away, wagging his tail. It was rare that he ever wagged his tail for no reason so she stood and grinned. He looked up at her, panting, milky eyes shining. She knew what he was saying. Akiana was coming.
