If there was one thing Sachi hadn't counted on, it was for the woman to proceed to lead her on some sort of wild goose chase.
Ah, she should have known that plans like this were always more simplistic in theory than in reality.
Thus, Sachi found herself tailing the woman for the entirety of the day, following her all over the whole bloody town as the woman inspected everything and talked to a few random people. Jeez! Sachi really hadn't expected the woman to have so much energy--didn't noblewomen just sit on their hineys all day drinking tea and nibbling finger-sandwiches?! Maybe she'd really underestimated the woman. Maybe she really did know what she was doing and all that timidness was just an act. Maybe she wore her jewelry out there in the open because she felt that, if she was attacked, she had the means to defend herself.
Maybe she wasn't all that she seemed.
Or maybe she was just a pain in the butt, Sachi thought as she rested against the side of a building to catch her breath, watching from a distance behind the woman, who was resting on a park bench. The sun was starting to set which meant she'd been following the woman all day, and boy, she'd be lying if she said the woman hadn't given her a run for her non-existent money. It was pretty tricky to follow someone for so long without tipping them off that they were being followed--or tipping off other people as to what she was up to. It was all about acting natural and casual, just another sheep in the flock.
Flexing her toes inside her boots, she realized that she really wished she could be doing what the woman was doing now because her feet sure were sore. Her tail, too. Poor thing had gotten stepped on once or twice today, how she wasn't quite sure. All she'd registered was that it hurt. That was the downside of that thing. Always getting pulled on by kids, shut in doors, or stepped on. Wincing, Sachi massaged her bruised tail gently, straightening out the bent silver hairs. Poor, abused thing--oop! She was moving!
She waited patiently until the woman was nearly out of sight before she pushed off from the wall, stretched her arms over her head and arched her back until it gave a pleasant pop, and, with a yawn, she headed off after the woman at a slow, easy pace. Nope. She wasn't following her at all, uh uh. Meandering here and there and rubbing at her eyes, keeping well camouflaged against the few people that were still out at this time (or as well camouflaged as someone with silver hair and a lion's tail could do) she only watched where the woman was going out of the corner of her vision. Ah, if only there were less people! Now the woman finally seemed less...energetic. She seemed lost and unsure again, not all excited like before, and it was starting to get dark. If they were in a more secluded part of town she could have had her shinies by now!
Part of Sachi wondered if she should just give up. Her stomach was starting to growl--she hadn't dared to try and swipe any food, not wanting anything to go wrong--and so far she'd had no luck. The girl had evaded her all day and while she looked a pretty prize she knew that she'd probably passed up a lot of other good targets since she'd been so set on this one. But she couldn't give up now! She'd come so far and...just great. The girl was heading, much to her disappointment, for a tavern. Oh no...she went in there and Sachi would never be able to get at her!
So maybe she was a smart girl...sticking to populated areas, turning in quickly at dusk...sigh.
Indeed, the woman vanished inside the tavern and, for a few moments, Sachi just stared across the street in disappointment at the closed door. All that for nothing. She'd just wasted a whole day for nothing.
Yay.
Well...you win some and you lose some, Sachi thought in an effort to push away the disappointment. No point in loitering now. She was hungry so...eh...guess she should take care of that. Straightening her back, she turned her back to the tavern, ready to cut through a nearby alley, but that was when a sound reached her sensitive ears.
The sound of a door opening and shutting.
Hopeful but not expecting much, she glanced over her shoulder toward the tavern--and saw the woman, leaning against the door and looking none too happy.
And she was alone.
And it was now sufficiently dark, the streets rather empty. Perhaps the woman didn't know what she was doing after all.
It became obvious that she really didn't have a clue when the woman headed away from the well-lit tavern and down a--Sachi couldn't have planned it better!--dark road that was only lit by some meager torches, and after letting the woman get a good head start, Sachi stole off after her down the road.
She couldn't just jump her right away, not while they were still close to the tavern.
No, it wasn't until a good five or ten minutes down the road that she finally decided to act, hazarding that they'd be far enough away by now that no one would hear anything on this deserted road.
Hah, that sounded so ominous. A lot more ominous than what Sachi actually planned.
Picking up her pace a bit, just enough that she'd eventually overtake the woman, she kept her posture casual. Just another woman walking the narrow, dark road at night. Nothing unusual about her at all, though her hand did loosen the dagger at her belt. All the woman's jewelry would be hard to remove by the old "bump and swipe" tactic. The bracelet seemed too tight fitting to slip it off without her noticing, and the necklace would be too obvious. Which left only one option--to be obvious, and that's where the dagger came in. Ugh. It was such a crude method, intimidating someone, and she rather hated it. But hey, that was gold! And she wasn't actually going to hurt the girl.
Just rob her.
Ahem.
It wasn't long before she caught up to the woman, and once she did she threw subtlety to the wind. Picking up her pace, she reached out with one hand to tap the girl on the shoulder to get her attention before stepping around to her front, smiling a little. She probably didn't look very intimidating. Just a young girl, no more than nineteen or twenty, average in height...and with a cute lion's tail that swayed behind her like a cat's.
"Hiya! Sorry if I scared ya, didn't mean to, but I was wondering if you could help me with something?" she asked, tilting her head to the side and hooking her thumbs in her belt. Her eyes, well suited for the night, scanned the area quickly while her ears strained to pick up the sounds of any unwanted visitors. But the street was just as deserted as ever, the area around them silent. "See, I just sorta need, well--all your jewelry," she said casually as, with a metallic hiss, she drew her dagger from her belt and pointed the blade at the girl's chest.
"So take it off, now, and hand it over! I won't hurt ya if you do, so hurry it up!" she ordered firmly, eyes narrowed and voice low in a very no nonsense tone. "Quickly now! And don't even think about running or screaming. Do that and I'll just assume ya don't need your toes or your tongue, and then I'll just help myself to your stuff and...well...guess you'd be stuck out here until someone found you," she added, motioning pointedly with the dagger.
Man, this tactic always sucked, and Sachi felt awful acting all mean--it just wasn't really in her nature, though she could pretend--but hey, she had to eat too, right? And she'd really only be doing this noble girl a favor! Teach her about the dangers of walking alone at night and wearing her jewelry in plain sight! Yeah! Better she do it than some creepy man that'd like...mug her and beat her up and rape her and murder her.
Yeah. This was for her own good! It'd keep her from getting mugged and beat up and raped and murdered in the future!
