The day brought itself upon the people of Serendipity no sooner or later than it usually did. The newly found king rode upon a horse along with the rest of his cavalry. His sister strode beside him. They made their way down the stone road leading to the outer portions of the city.

There was no business to be done. Only show. It had been a week since Romeo had been crowned, and for a week he had been fondly regarded as the sequel to the monarchy series. It was about time the people, most precisely those living near the border, saw their majesty.

They had been noted of his arrival two days in advance, so all the farmers and rural citizens could make their way into the city on this day, to cheer on their leader.

As the first batch of people began to notice the horsemen, no sooner did more people show up to see this once in a life time event. Of course, they had many opportune moments, because for the last four years, the monarchy of Serendipity went through numerous exchanges.

Which was why very few people, if any, could careless about the new king's arrival - having fell to the belief that he would only last for a short duration. Romeo had thought of gathering as many people and making a speech, a speech about how he planned to be king for much longer than Fenway. But he realized that if he did make such a speech, if he would have died shortly after, he would have created a lie when he did.

There were others, as a good omen, that knew of Romeo's successful leadership when he ordered his division to burst through the enemies of the nation, splitting their forces in two. Then making his way into the castle as a last ditch effort to save the previous king. Although the attempt at rescue failed, most credit have been given to him for if it were not for his tactic, the battle may have been lost.

As the crowd began to praise him, Romeo could not come to pass with what his responsibilities might be to keep the trust his people had in him. He knew that they would honor them until they died, but he could not betray that esteem. He had to give them a reason to trust him. Leadership was nothing new to him, but the responsibilities of being a king were.

If it were not for the accurate and knowledgeable front that the previous leaders of Serendipity possessed, Romeo would have been busy. Busy amending old laws and creating new ones, and getting to know all these new faces was not an easy task either.

There was another reason why he set out today.

In order to create a monarch of his bloodline he needed a wife. So he set out today, choosing those women he saw fit for his liking.

"Her!" He pointed at a slim, average height, young women with short blonde hair. One of his knights steered his horse toward her and briefed her at what just happened. As Romeo walked by, he saw her jump for joy in the corner of his eye. Tonight, she would have the opportunity to dine with him among the others he chose.

Well, it seemed she'd come on an eventful day. Or at least before an eventful day, since she'd been in town three days prior. Normally she'd still be sleeping around this time, too, but it was the roar and clamor of what sounded like a geat number of people outside that both made sleep impossible and roused her curiosity. Something big was happening and, foreigner that she was, she was completely out of the loop. For all she knew something terrible was happening, like a brawl or a public execution, but nonetheless she was quick to throw back the covers and rise out of bed, rummaging around the room half asleep for her clothes. Ah well. Good or bad, with that noise she wasn't going to be getting any sleep, anyway, so she might as well see what was up.

With her head still half in the fog of sleep, it took a bit longer than usual to properly pull on and fasten her robes, and lace her sandals up since she kept screwing up the ties in her drowsy state, but after a few tries she finally got it right and by then she felt more awake, too. After that she splashed some water on her face from a wash basin to wake herself up more and headed downstairs, out of the inn, and straight into the fray.

The scene that greeted her was, thankfully, one of excitement and, as far as she could tell, positive energy. People were smiling, and when she turned her head to look where everyone else was looking, she saw that the source of it all was a rather impressive procession on horseback making its way down the road. A parade?

She nearly smacked her forehead at the thought and quickly blamed it on just having woken up. Duh, Rayu. A bunch of noble-looking people on horses, a big crowd of peasants and nobles alike watching eagerly and excitedly, and from what she could pick up from snippets of conversation heard in the crowd--that guy in the front? That was the leader of this country. Rayu raised up a bit on her toes and squinted her green eyes against the light so she could see over the heads of the people in front of her, wanting to catch a better look at the king. This wasn't her country so she felt no real attachment to the event, not when she'd be leaving and continuing her journey in a few days, but it would still be fun to watch.

Besides, she was awake now, anyway.

Suddenly the king pointed at someone, a woman in the crowd, and a knight broke formation to go to her and tell her something that...was apparently really good news, because she looked absolutely elated. Rayu tilted her head curiously and pushed a short red braid out of her face when her many thin, chin-length braids shifted with the movement. Well that was interesting. Yet she thought she understood what was happening. If he was a new leader as some of the murmurs suggested, maybe he was picking people out of the crowd to give gifts to, as happened where she came from. It was a good way to make a fine first impression and endear yourself to your subjects, after all, except...wait.

After a few moments of watching, she realized he was only selecting women.

Er. Huh. That was interesting. It was also, Rayu decided, her cue to cut this viewing short before the procession passed where she was. It wasn't like she expected to get picked out of a large crowd, but she also preferred not to take any chances and to avoid any potentially awkward situations in advance. Better safe than sorry was her motto, and there had been many times in the past when she'd been very, very sorry.

Turning calmly, she began to meander her way through the crowd, though she quickly found it was more difficult to leave than it had been to arrive. A lot of new people had gathered, packing in tightly around her, and they couldn't seem to hear her as she politely asked them to let her through. Ugh. She couldn't just shove her way through, either. Well...she could. But she wouldn't. There was no need to use force over something trivial like this, inconvenient as it was.

[Ooh, sorry for the rambling-ness. Opening posts are my doom. xD]

"How many knights have room for a second rider?" Romeo asked.

The lead knight shifted his gaze from horseback to horseback.  Each women his Liege chose were ordered to mount a horse, reined by a knight. He looked until he found that he was the only one left with room for someone. He looked back at Romeo, whose gaze raked across the crowd - halting when he spotted a fair skinned lady with red braids.

"We have room for one more," the lead knight said.

Romeo's choices were biased. Each women he chose had a light complexion, and as if he was racially conscious, all of his inventory were human, perhaps natives of Serendipity if not from anywhere else. But there was something different about this lady, beside her red hair.

Romeo pointed as the lead knight followed his gesture. The lead knight turned and hastily made his way passed Romeo's horse so that he could notify the bachelorette, if she was not already betrothed.

He noticed that she seemed eager to pierce through the crowd, as if she wanted to escape the fate about to be composed. "Dear stranger," he said as he dismounted. She managed to enter to crowd, leaving him no choice but to follow her on foot.

He walked to her, passing by several bodies she left behind for him to challenge. "Fair lady, I command that you halt your pace."

Romeo saw that this would not be a simple task. He raised his hand, a sign meaning to halt those who followed him from behind. He could of just ordered the lead knight to ignore the women so that they could carry on, but he did not want to miss the chance that this could be the special one. There was something about her that pulled his energy.

"You might as well let her go," said the blonde women he selected. Romeo and several horsemen exchanged glances. All could tell that this women did not like competition.

Romeo strode beside the knight whose horse carried her. "I'm not going to abandon this event until every one of my knights has fully burdened their backs. You'll have a chance to dine with me like all women who march alongside us today," he said to the blonde.

He realized that she wanted less women to dine with her, for the fewer there were, the greater chance she would have of becoming queen.

At first, Rayu didn't think that she was the one being told to stop. After all, the idea of her being picked out of a crowd was utterly, laughably absurd, so at first she paid the voice no heed. Maybe he was talking to a different woman, though from the way those other girls had acted when picked, she really didn't see why any of them would want to run. She, however, had her reasons. A lot of reasons. One of them, of course, was that she had no idea exactly why people were being picked, though she had her guesses.

It was when the voice spoke up again, and notably closer to her, that she thought to look backwards over her shoulder, and she could have died right then. The king guy. He was there. He was on foot. He was in the crowd. And he was following her. Not only that, but he wasn't just asking her to stop. No, no, the word he used was command, and foreigner or not, he was the king and she was in his country, and there were a lot of knights with him.

She came to an abrupt stop as soon as she registered the words and situation, then slowly turned to face him. Another person might have continued on regardless, but she was no fool. You didn't disobey someone who's word was the law unless you were completely and utterly daft. Or insane. Rayu liked to think that she was neither, and she quickly smoothed out her features to a what she hoped was a calm, placid expression. "Pardon, but, ah...me?" she asked slowly, feeling stupid as she glanced left and right as though to make sure that he wasn't talking to someone else. Then she glanced past him, toward the group of horses and knights, most of which had a women with them--except for one. Erp.

"I mean, Your Majesty. Or Your Highness. Whichever you prefer, my apologies," she added quickly when she remembered that whole formality thing, and she would have bowed to him, a deep, straight-backed bow from the waist with the fingers of her left hand touching her brow in the manner of her people, but the crowd was packed in tightly enough around her that she didn't have the room for that. So she just stood there awkwardly, already trying to think of a way out of this without giving too much away at the same time.

[lol the lead knight following you wasn't romeo. sorry if I made it sound like that in my last post.]

The knight saw her discomfort as he stared into her panicky green eyes. He himself would have let her be, but not if his duty to the king came first. "I am not your king."

The lead knight raised his hand and pointed behind him with such accuracy that his finger pointed directly at the real king. "The man with the white hair is, and you my lady, have the chance to dine with him tonight. Those few who do, will have a chance to be selected to become his wife. Of course, the king is kind. You don't have to succumb to this order."

From the distance, Romeo watched. He could tell from afar that if he did not step in himself, that she would yield from her prize. But he could not let that happen, he wanted her to dine with him.

Romeo steered his horse forward, stopping next to the horse the lead knight left behind. Two other knights did the same, and they escorted Romeo to the red-haired women. Romeo stepped beside the lead knight.

With such sweetness he said, "Beautiful women, do not hesitate in your choice. Through hesitation comes a negative energy, and this energy might deem you wrongness."

He stared into her green eyes, hoping to influence her decision through his mind. Thousands of women already fell in love with this type of stare, but it would not surprise him if this particular women did not.

[OOP! xD Sorry about that, I misread! *headdesk*]

A brilliant blush found its way to Rayu's cheeks at the man's announcement, and her eyes followed his finger as he pointed behind him--to the real king. Oh, Teyar above. If she could have died before, right then she could have happily allowed the ground to swallow her whole if it was so inclined. Here she'd already drawn unwanted attention and been singled out of a crowd by a king, and then she'd gone and made a complete and utter fool of herself by addressing the king's knight as the king. A few people beside her snickered, and she blushed a little deeper before mouthing the word "sorry", because for a moment her voice decided not to come out as anything more than a whisper.

Her attention was drawn back to the knight when her mind finally registered the rest of what he'd said, and she immedietely balked. His wife?! Oh...dear. That really wasn't good at all, and it was just her luck that she of all people would end up in this awkward predicament when there were probably a hundred other available and willing women in this crowd. Of course, the man had said she could decline...

The trouble was how. She didn't know how the leaders of this country operated, or the politics, or what was considered polite or not here. Then again, maybe she was just being overly paranoid and over-analyzing this whole thing, but she'd seen both the good and the bad in nobility in the past and so it made her both wary and curious. Still...the knight had offered her a way out and since he spoke for the king, obviously this king was no tyrant. He also hadn't seemed angry with her for her mistake. That was a good sign, and it meant she should just escape while she could and let another woman have this opportunity. But her tongue was still frozen, and it felt positively glued to the roof of her mouth when the king--the actual one--spoke up.

She was not used to this much attention.

She was also not used to being called "beautiful", either, though she certainly recognized that look and that tone. It was both flattering and unsettling at the same time--flattering because, for all her vows and spiritual choices she was still a woman and still Teyar's child, but unsettling because it was flattering and she couldn't risk even the smallest temptation.

"Ah..." Realizing she was gaping, Rayu raised a fist to her lips and cleared her throat, then lowered her eyes respectfully. "I...I think perhaps His Majesty should give a more fitting woman a chance," she finally managed, hoping her voice carried over the crowd. There. Nice and polite--she hoped--and bare on the details.

Still, if worst came to worst and he insisted on her coming--and unfortunately, Rayu was finding it difficult to say no and make a scene with so many eyes on her--there was still no pressure, right? The full moon was at least three days away and all he wanted was to have dinner. If he was looking for a wife, he wouldn't be interested in her, anyway. The other women seemed more excited about this, and more bold, so he'd likely be attracted to one of them.

She declined.

Romeo felt no pain either. He did not bother to have his hopes up, figuring that this girl, unlike so many others, would have disregarded the brilliant future she could have held. For her, though, a brilliant future would be with someone else, not the king.

Romeo did not bother to say goodbye to the women, who seemed oddly out of his place in terms of age differential. It was difficult to tell, but if one had actually looked deep into her eyes like Romeo for instance, they would have been able to tell that she was much older than she appeared. He soon realized that she must have been of a different species than he. A humanoid that looked like a human except that it did not age like a human.

If he knew then, he would not have even selected her in the first place. After all, every single one of his chosen women were human. To the lead knight he said, "Well then, let's carry on. I'll select one more women and then we will finish our little parade and head back to the castle."

The crowd surrounding him seemed to raise its tone. Did a king just reveal his plans aloud?

The lead knight nodded after saying, in acknowledgment to the task handed out by his master, "My Liege."

Romeo and the other three knights walked toward their horses and mounted when they drew near. Romeo did not look back at the red-haired lass as he reined his horse back onto the road, organized the stature and positions of his servicemen, and continued on his march.

((Hope y'all don't mind my intrusion. :3))

There was no way that Alicia could have not heard of the king's arrival. Her brother had told her he would be here, and she had to get a good look at the Kingdom's new king. He had told her of his history as a knight. He respected their new king, which had given Alicia some respect of her own for the man by proxy. Therefore, it was with a smile that she waited along the side of the road - she had even managed to be one of the first to arrive, which was good for one of her stature as it meant that she would not have to look over heads and shoulders of the many who were taller than she.

When the man arrived with his entourage, Alicia would not be so quick to sing the man's praises. After all, it would take more than a position and a good word from her brother to truly earn her respect. The crowd, however, certainly seemed to enjoy the show. The man hadn't even done anything official in his new position yet, and they were already treating him...well, like a king. Still, she tried to remain optimistic about this one...

...at least, until she saw what happened next.

When the new king pointed to the first woman, uttering that single word as a command, Alicia was confused. One of the knights went to the crowd, and a moment later returned with a rather excited-looking woman in tow. That was strange. But then it happened again and again and again, one for each of the knights in his entourage. After the fourth woman or so it wasn't hard to guess what the man was doing, and the thought of it infuriated her.

This was to be his first act as king? To stroll through the city picking up chicks?

The smile left Alicia's face immediately, her brow furrowed and her arms crossed. Maybe her brother was wrong about this man. There were most certainly more important matters that this man could be attending to, but it seemed to her that his priorities rested in his pants. She wanted to shout something then and there, but in all likelihood it would be lost in the din of the crowd, and he was too far away to hear. Instead she waited, angrily tapping her foot on the ground, until the king and his men came close to her location, pointing at some woman across the road who, notably, seemed to be trying to escape. The one remaining knight without a woman riding with him dismounted to speak to her - of course the king couldn't be bothered to get off his own horse - though she could not hear the exchange, even though the crowd had quietened considerably.

The woman seemed a little flustered and uncomfortable. Alicia found herself wondering if she would decline, with some part of her hoping that she would. A few moments passed and the king himself then approached. Oh how troublesome it must be for you, she thought sarcastically to herself as he actually did dismount himself now, and approached the woman with two other soldiers at his side. A few more moments passed with the exchange of more words that she could not hear, and finally the king and his soldiers returned to their horses - notably without the woman he was speaking to.

He didn't force her to come. Good. He wasn't a criminal, or at least not a blatant one...she was willing to give him that much to his credit.

Hearing his next instructions didn't surprise Alicia, as she had already guessed at his intent. What had surprised her was the surprised general reaction from the crowd. Had they really not figured it out? Were they dense, or just blinded by their own blind love for their new monarch?

Either way, the king was still close, and the crowd relatively silent compared to before. Now would be a good opportunity.

Time to see how this new king responds to criticism.

"Hey! What the hell is this?!" she shouted, taking a single step forward and giving the king himself a challenging stare. "Is this to be your first act as king, picking up random women off the street and bringing them back to your castle, or is it just one of the perks that comes with the position?! I would think that you would have more important things to do!"

There was an overall gasp of shock from the crowd, shortly followed by dead silence as the crowd waited to hear the king's response to this young lady who had the audacity to speak to him in such an accusing way.

Romeo's brows tightened. He did not like the sudden rant. He would retaliate in a calm, but demanding tone - even though he felt like striking this very foe across the face.

He raised his arm. The cavalry came to a halt. "It was my choice to represent myself to the people. I like to get things done as soon as possible, that is why I am multitasking - introducing myself while choosing a wife."

He had no intention of selecting this aggressive women either. She was not pretty, and she was way too harsh. "Now set aside and let the nobility trek through. I'm sure you have more important things to do other than impeding on my work, for work it is."

He noted that this girl thought he was playing with the title given to him. That was what he estimated. His horse continued to walk as its reins demanded so.

As his horse stepped by her, he concluded. "I honor the name I have obtained. Don't even bother thinking that I am using this title for my personal advantage. That would be the last thing I'd do."

As his horse walked away, his sister, who followed in similar trance, gave the provocative girl a meaningful glare.

To anyone else, that might have been a slap in the face, the way the king turned away from her without a word. To her, it was a godsend and she was glad to be so gently let off the hook. Rayu practically wilted with relief, ignoring the incredulous looks others in the crowd around her were giving her--many of them women who would have probably loved to have been in her position. Well, they should be grateful that she declined because it would give someone else a chance, if this really was something that they wanted. She wasn't about to question the ethics or morals of this whole thing; no one was getting hurt that she could tell, and it wasn't her place to judge even if she found the whole event strange.

A potentially disatrous situation averted, Rayu exhaled softly in relief and, just as she had quietly and respectfully declined, she had been on the verge of quietly and respectfully leaving until--

What the?

She turned back around, eyes widening as she scanned the crowd for the speaker, and it wasn't long before they locked onto a woman at the head of the crowd, one who was stepping boldly forward in a way that matched those bold words. Actually, bold was an understatement--she was swearing at him. The king. Now, she may not have been familiar with how politics worked here, but where she came from this kind of stunt could land you in a nice, chilly cell fighting over bread and water with rats for a few days.

Ohhh dear...

The shocked silence that fell over the crowd told her that, maybe, that was also the case here.

Like the rest of the crowd she was silent, waiting with bated breath to see how the king would respond. And when he did...it was a coldly calm rebuttal. Rayu felt a small tinge of respect for him not getting his feathers ruffled by the girl's accusations--it was a sign of a fair, confident leader that he didn't punish her for that, since obviously he wasn't worried about his name getting sullied by something so trivial as others were--but that girl had still taken quite the risk.

Something about the girl told her that, even as the man rode past her, the girl wouldn't let it go. It was just a hunch; she'd been around bold women like her before.

Which was exactly why, during the whole confrontation, Rayu had been carefully picking her way through the crowd toward the woman, though she didn't actually step close to her until the king's back was turned. Honestly, she was still rather embarrassed about what had happened and didn't really want to bring attention to herself again, but she also liked to stop a bad thing from happening before it happened, and this situation, if it didn't let up, had the potential to get messy.

"Let him be," she said quietly, placing a gentle yet firm hand on the girl's left shoulder as she stepped up beside her. "It's not doing any harm; the women seem happy. Besides, that was a dangerous game you were playing..."

It was a good response. She half expected having the need to defend herself after the outburst, but his response remained calm despite the annoyance her accusation seemed to have caused. This showed some degree of patience - strike another mark in his favor.

Well played, king.

Her lips curled into a new smirk at the king's response. She still percieved that certain implication in his words that the nobility was fundamentally better than the commonfolk which she always hated, but she liked a man with patience. She didn't move as he passed her by and spoke a final comment, she only followed him with her eyes and listened. When he was done, but before he was out of earshot, she issued one final challenge to him, though this one wasn't quite so loud, or angry, or accusing, but it was loud enough for him to hear.

"Prove me wrong, then."

She continued refusing to back down, returning the glare directed toward her by some other woman - a noble, not a commoner like the women the king had just picked up - with the same smirk she had directed toward the king himself. She was prepared to leave the place, as she did indeed have more important things to do as the king said, when she felt something on her shoulder. A quiet female voice spoke, and when she turned to look she saw a woman she recognized as the one who had turned the king down. Alicia's expression softened, and her body language became more relaxed as she gave the woman a smile

"It was, but I never was one to keep quiet. I just don't like the implications of the whole thing...here he goes riding through town with his armed men, picking out women as if they were posessions to be had." She paused long enough to give a shake of the head as she cut herself off from ranting more than was necessary. "Ahh, but you don't want to stand here and listen to me complain. At least you got out of it yourself, right?"

Prove her wrong was what he intended to do when she required it of him. The only way he could prove her falsehood was if he did not say anything - if he did not use the title king as an advantage. The only other option would be to mow her down with his authority, but that would prove her right, that would prove that he would indeed use his authority to his advantage. Which was the reason why he simply continued walking away on his horse. Utterly ignoring the arrogance she displayed.

It was not like simply escaping this conflict would prove her right either. He knew that would explain how ignorant he was of her, which was why several people in the crowd began to laugh. A local challenging the king's authoritative rule? Such an event was funny, most precisely because they all knew how humiliating it would be to challenge such esteemed authority.

Being rather on the short side, it was a bit hard for Linia to see through the crowd. She had glimpses of a procession of some sort, and there had been some rather excited screams. From asking a few people what was going on, she had managed to figure out what the procession was for.

And there now seemed to be a commotion of sort going on. And the alchemist was rather curious, so she weaved her way through the crowd, using her short size to it's advantage.

And then she was suddenly in the first row, blinking a little in surprise. It appeared that not all of the people chosen wanted to go.

Romeo chose the final women. It was about time, considering that he could have done so much sooner.

"Her." As he laid out his command, the lead knight walked toward the women he chose. She was tall, with straight shoulder-length orange hair. In terms of his standards, this girl was also human.

She was directed to the free horseback, its rider nodding in approval as the lead knight commanded her to hop onto the horse's backside, behind its rider. Romeo signaled for his little parade to carry on. So that was what they did...

Anonymous

As the party continued moving down the street, Linia turned to the girl that had been calling out to the king. She brushed her hands down her skirt, trying to brush away some of the dirt the horses had kicked up, "Well. That was rather odd. Do kings often marry peasants here?"

Anonymous

Alicia turned to watch the king, his men and his new women proceed down the street. He picked out one more woman in a manner akin to picking out a choice slab of meat at the market, just as he had done with the others. Alicia gave a slight shake of the head as this last one mounted. She truly hoped that he would prove to be a good leader for the kingdom, though she wasn't happy with this first act. In reality, she wanted him to prove her wrong. Her pride certainly wasn't on the line, and even if it was it took a backseat to the well-being of the kingdom. Hopefully he would prove himself to be more than just a man in a position of power with a love of women.

At least there's one thing we have in common, she mused with a smirk.

At about that time she heard another voice behind her. Alicia turned and was confronted with a shorter woman who, judging by her words, must have been a foreigner. "Not that I've heard of, but I don't make a habit of keeping tabs on our kings' dating habits," she responded with a shrug. She turned sideways, her eyes glancing back toward the king once again. "...but there have to be better ways of choosing a wife than this."

Anonymous

Linia nodded, smiling at the woman again, "One would imagine so. It seems a rather odd way to choose a feature Queen. To just pick them out based on looks."

She shook her head a little, "It really seems an odd way for a king to behave. Though at least he didn't seem to force anyone who didn't want to go." She then looked a little surprised and flushed lightly, "Oh, how rude of me. My name is Linia Lan’gressa." She hesitantly held her hand out to the other girl.

Anonymous

Alicia turned to fully face the girl again, now giving a smile. "I'm glad you agree!" she said. "Looks are nice, but it's what's inside that really counts, right?" She took Linia's hand in hers and gave a quick, firm, and somewhat vigorous shake. "Alicia Y-" she stopped herself. Alicia may no longer identify herself as a noble despite her privileged birth, but she still bore their name. If someone from the nearby crowd recognized that name when she spoke it and associated that family name with the girl who was causing a disturbance (no matter how right that disturbance may have been) it could cause trouble for the rest of the family, and she didn't want that.

"My name is Alicia," she left it at that as she released Linia's hand. "So you're not from around here, are you?" she made sure to ask before the new acquaintance could inquire about the omitted surname.

A look of puzzlement crossed Linia's face at the girl's stumble over her surname. But then she replaced that look with a smile, choosing to ignore it. Her own handshake was strong, despite her thick curves there was muscle in her, "I'm sure it wasn't hard to tell that I don't hail from here. I'm from Necromantia."

Alicia raised an eyebrow at the mention of Necromantia, though she kept her smile. Necromancers made her uneasy, and while she wasn't exactly fond of them she could live and let live as long as they kept their magics to themselves. "Necromantia, huh? That wouldn't make you a necromancer, would it?" There was no hostility in her voice, just an honest question borne from her curiosity.
