For starters you can check out the Before You Play (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/play.php) to get an understanding of the general workings. The World Page (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/world.php) will give you background about the setting you'll be playing in. You can also visit the Plotting Centre (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?board=142.0) to see if there are any threads you want to join or post ideas of your own that you'd like to recruit others to join.
Character(s) are created here (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?board=156.0) and you'll find a form to help guide you with what to fill out. But fill free to change it as you like and fill in as much or as little pleases you. You can also if you desire (though it is not required) fill out a Wants and Limits (http://www.spiritsoftheearth.net/smf/index.php?board=141.0) page of your own to help other writers know what kinds of things you do and don't like to write.
There's also a cbox located on the bottom of the main forum page if you want to pop in for a friendly hello. There's usually someone in there.
I know that's a ton of info I just threw at you but feel free to ask as many questions as you need. We're a friendly bunch and always eager to assist in any way we can. Just let us know when you're ready to roll.
