Alexios skidded to a halt at the edge of the small clearing, hackles raised and his head low to the ground, snarling. His eye soaked in the sight of her, she was smaller than him- significantly, her brilliant red coat catching the afternoon sun. She was calm and proud, yet eager. He could smell her eagerness. Gods be damned, she was heated. Part of him wanted to greet her amicably, but she was a wolf. He could never take her as a mate.
The wolf within him stirred at this thought, each lungful of her scent made the beast want her- but he wanted nothing to do with her. He wanted her gone, dead even. And for the first time in many decades, Alexios heard the growling voice of his inner wolf, the growl rolling thunder in the storm of his mind. 'She is alone, Arlukilos. Calm yourself, she has come to offer herself to you, even from afar she could recognize you as the alpha you are. Take her, make her one of your mates.'
The massive wolf shook his head violently hearing his inner beast call his bestial name. It's voice reverberated around his mind then down his spine, causing the shake to travel down his whole body, by the end of which, his posture mirrored her own, tall, proud, but his hackles were still raised, and he couldn't help but occasionally lift his lips to bare a fang at her as he slowly padded closer to her, his good right eye turned towards her as he tasted of the air, taking in any surrounding sounds. His wolf was right, he could smell only her around. No, he could only smell her. She, and the scent of her heat, dominated his nostrils, the only thing he could focus on as he moved closer, similar to if he had actually scented one of his mates.
His wolf hadn't been wrong before, but damn it all. As he moved scant inches from her, he decided to trust his primal instinct, if she made any ill action towards him or his mates, he would kill her.
