"I guess that's it," Keani told his twin as the smell of smoke grew stronger, and now he could see the firelight from the campfires and make out tents and cabins. Well, it was a camp, at least; hopefully it was the one they were looking for.

And hopefully they weren't about to do something phenomenally stupid, strolling into a den of thieves and hoping they'd have them. But they needed to do something; life was tough for a couple of petty thieves who lived day to day by the meager scraps they earned pick-pocketing, competing with the bigger, better ones--who sometimes liked to filch their earnings. There was safety in numbers and these guys were the new alpha dogs in town. Successful, earning a name for themselves, inspiring talk and rumors...they controlled the roads!

And Keani wanted in on that.

May as well try their luck and hope they didn't get devoured in doing so!

Keani took a deep breath and squared his thin shoulders. "Alright. Let's see what we can do. Just act natural, alright. Like we belong."

He lead the way, falling into his familiar role as the confident, tough protector of the two (regardless of how true it actually was; what mattered was that Keoni believed it). He kept his dagger hidden under his tunic--fat lot of good it'd do here--and strolled along, casual-like, into the camp.

No getting nervous, now. These were his people! Right!

"Oi!" he called, stopping and settling into what he hoped was a casual pose--as opposed to stiff and tense, like he felt. "I'm lookin' for the Jackal. Where can I find 'im?"

He really wasn't so sure about this. At all. He agreed with his brother, they really did need some protection. Two skinny kids quickly ended up at the bottom of the pecking order and they were only just managing to fend off starvation as it was. But...these men looked dangerous.

Keoni was trying to not look weak, stride confidently like his twin, but with the eyes on them, his steps faltered and his shoulders hunched, trying to disappear from sight. He stuck to Keani's heels, eyes flicking around, taking in where all the men were and the best escape routes. He was a coward at heart and the flight instinct died hard.

He was more than happy to let Keani do the talking, still keeping his eyes peeled for any sign they needed to bolt.

A group of men lazed about before a cabin.  Two of them had set up an old game board and were busy playing a strategy game with stones, while the others sharpened knives and swords and went about checking supplies for a raid.  They were all of the disparate, some of them Serenian, others Adelan or Connlaothan.  One of them appeared to be none of those and all of them, his blood too mixed to fit him squarely into one race or another, though he had the strong build of an Adelan.

They all of them looked up when Keani spoke, then looked at each other and broke out into amused chuckling and shaking of heads.  Then they went back to their business without so much as a word of dismissal.

Rhindeer

Well, that was just awkward.

Awkward and creepy and a little embarrassing. He'd admit it stung to get wordlessly dismissed even here among criminals.

Keani shot his brother a look and gave a little shrug. Poor thing looked so worried, so small and out of place, so he kept his own expression neutral and unconcerned. Deep inside, though, he was getting second thoughts and his feet were itching to flee and not turn back, pride be damned. Still, at least no one had shown any actual hostility; that was a good sign, right?

The ones with the knives were the ones he was worried about, so he nodded toward the ones setting up the game, nudged Keoni with his elbow, and headed toward them. Maybe a different approach?

"Um, 'scuse me, but we'd like to speak with the Jackal." He paused, then added, "Please?"

They were going to die. These men were going to murder them and they were going to die. How could Keani look so calm was beyond him. He trailed after his brother, eyes darting around, no longer even attempting to look badass. That was Keani's job.

The please surprised him, his brother was rarely polite, but is seemed like a good idea in the current situation. While Keani talked, Keoni looked around them, taking everything in. He wasn't good with people, but he was good at figuring things out.

He didn't know much about Jackal, but one of them men seemed to be in charge. The way people moved around him and the way he moved. If he wasn't Jackal, he must be high in the ranks. Tugging lightly on the back of his twins shirt, he needed toward the red haired man, his voice low, "Hey. I think maybe he would know."

Tally

The two men at the chess board looked up at Keani, a sneer tugging at their lips.  As soon as he said the word please, the lot of them broke out in full-throated laughter.  Not the little chuckle that had rippled through them before, but open-mouthed, rolling laughter.

The red-haired man pounded his knee with his fist as he collected himself and the mirth died back down.  "Please.  Please he says!"  That started them all back up again, and once more he had to pull himself back together.  He rubbed tears from his eyes.  "Ah gods.  Aha.  Please!"

The man stood, well over six feet tall and a freshly sharpened short sword in hand.  He hooked a thumb into his belt and grinned at the two boys.  "Ah well, begging your pardons good fellows, but may I be askin' what ya need to see the Jackal for, please."

Rhindeer

A vibrant blush darkened Keani's skin and he found himself wishing he could sink into the ground--or take the word back. Oh gods. He'd just humiliated himself before a band of criminals and...and...it wasn't that funny! Was it? He hunched his shoulders and waited for the laughter to die down, keeping his face turned away from Keoni. He was the brave one here. Yep. Brave was he. So he didn't want his brother to see whatever horrified expression he must be wearing.

He tried to collect himself again, but failed when the red-haired man--who was a lot taller than he'd been expecting--stood. Keani's eyes flicked down to the lethal-looking sword he held and he licked his lips nervously, then jerked his eyes back up to the man and managed a shaky smile. He wanted to shrink away from him, but stood his ground for Keoni's sake.

"Haha, heh, yeah. Right, ah. Well, y'see, we just, um, we were wonderin' if...well...if Jackal might have room for two more thieves," he finally said, shifting his weight nervously.

While Keoni was a bit of a coward, well, a lot of a coward, but these people laughing at his brother was making him angry. Keani was Keoni's world and he wasn't going to let people embarrass him like that. He could tell his brother felt shamed, hear it in his voice and see it in his posture.

Peering out from behind his brother, he glared at the red haired man, "Shut yer fuckin' holes! Don't cha fuckin' laugh at us. Yer no better than we are. We just asked a question' and ya got no call for laughin'!"

He gripped the back of Keani's shirt, arm shaking, but he didn't back down, expression angry, "We're good too! My brother's real talented and I ain't met a lock I can't pick yet. So don't ya be lookin' down at us cause we ain't part o' no gang yet."

Tally

Another round of laughter made it's way around the circle of men, this one brief and scattered, with the unmistakable bite of danger in it.  Not hostile, not yet, but the veil of friendliness was gone from it.

The red-haired man did not laugh at all.  He grinned at Keani, a slow, widening showing of the teeth.  "That's a bold tongue you have, and a brave spirit to speak thus here.  Highly respectable trait.  And in respect I must tell you you're wasting your time.  The Jackal has enough thieves to stab him in the back many times over.  He needs no more at his throat."

He waved the sword at them in a shooing motion.  "Go on.  There's no work for you here."

Rhindeer

Dear sweet gods, we're gonna die, Keani thought, panic seizing him by the throat.

The last thing he ever expected was for Keoni to do that. Where the hell had that backbone come from? And why the hell did it have to come up now? On one level, he appreciated it, because wow, it was real flattering to know his brother thought that much of him. On another level, he did not appreciate the timing.

"Keoni..." he whispered through clenched teeth, not taking his eyes off the red-haired man.

Maybe he should have backed down then. The guy was giving them both an out, and they could take it and leave and live another day. But it would be another day of digging for scraps and they'd come this far already, and to just be dismissed like this...

He took a deep breath and rolled his shoulders back. "Then let the Jackal tell us that himself. We came here, we wanna talk to him."

A look passed between the gathered men, accompanied by smiles and glances at the red-haired man. This was fine entertainment for them.

The red-haired man smiled down at Keani, not yet run out of patience though they were tenacious lads to be sure.  They were as mice surrounded by cats, but they still stood and faced him.  Impressive, if unwise.  "Aye, well, Jackal ain't here.  And even if he was, don't nobody see him can't convince me they're worth it first.  And I ain't convinced."

Anonymous

Oh gods. He had gotten them killed. Keoni was so sure his stupid mouth had gotten them murdered that it was almost a surprise when it didn't happen. But he just couldn't stand it when the men had been laughing at this brother.

"Well, we don't stab no ones in the back. Or in the throat." He kept his death grip on Keani's shirt, still glaring up through his lank, greasy hair at the huge man, "Wut it take to convince ya? Cause we ain't leavin' 'til ya give us a real chance."

Being brave was a little like going downhill on a cart. You couldn't really stop it and it seemed like a good idea to just keep...going. Though he wasn't really sure it was. He just couldn't seem to get his mouth to stop.

Rhindeer

Shit, shit, shit...Keoni, of course, would pick this moment to find his spine! But it was too late, and they needed to form a united front. If one of them backed down, chickened out, or just looked weak...it would be no good. They came here to find work, right? Keoni had the right idea.

"Yeah, what my brother said," Keani said, staring up at the tall man. So maybe they hadn't found Jackal, but if they had to go through this bloke first then that had to mean they were on the right track. "If ya ain't convinced, we'll convince ya, but we will see him today. What's it take? We'll do it."

"I see you're industrious lads, got a lively spirit for work in ya.  Now mayhap it wouldn't be so bad to have a couple extra pair of hands around here."  He sheathed the short sword at his hip, and grasped each of the brothers by the shoulder, turning them around.  He slung an arm around each of their necks and pointed to a pair of mud-caked boots sitting against a nearby cabin.

"Now, you see those over there?  Those belong to the Jackal.  Why don't you boys take to polishin' them for him.  I'm sure he'll be right pleased with your work when he returns."

Anonymous

Boots? Keoni glanced over at them, not really having expected that. He mutely nodded his head, still clutching Keani for dear life, shocked at himself and feeling rather drained now that the anger wasn't coursing through him anymore.

He could polish boots pretty well, had done it a few times to make a few coins when pickings were slim. And Keani could do anything.

Rhindeer

...Not quite as glamorous as he'd been expecting, but all right! Boots? He could do boots. If it would earn them a chance to meet the Jackal face to face and potentially earn them a place here, instead of getting dicked around like this, he'd make the bloody things shine. And as far as tasks went, it wasn't terrible. Demeaning, but no more than he was already used to.

He exchanged a look with Keoni, then slipped out from under the man's arm. "Uh, alright. Yeah, boots, that's easy, we shined many a boot, right Keoni?" He flashed his brother a reassuring smile and lead them toward the boots. Crouching down, he nudged one Keoni's way. "Ya take one, I'll get the other, and we'll be done in no time just like always."

Once the boys were out of earshot, one of the men grinned over at them and said, "Oi, thanks boss."

Jackal shrugged.  "All our boots will be a might cleaner by the end of the day I wager."

Another of the men said, "Think ya could get them to wash my clothes?  I hate doin' that."

"Sure!"  He tried to think of other things he could have the boys do, but of more interest to him was how long it would take them to realize that he was the Jackal, if they ever realized it.

Keoni went to work, shaking a little as the adrenaline wore off, "Um, Keani, do you think that doing this will actually have them meet Jackal? They might just be funnin' with us?"

Naturally paranoid and pessimistic, Keoni wasn't really sure he trusted these people very far.

Rhindeer

"Dunno," Keani whispered back, and for his brother's sake he forced his hands to steadiness and kept his voice calm and confident as he worked. "But we don't got much choice. If this'll get us a chance of meetin' him, we better just do it, because we may not get another shot. It's probably a test, see if we can follow orders or somethin'. I heard some groups got initiations and stuff."

"Wut, like...the stuff they do fer guilds an' shit? They ain't gonna like, beat us or nothin' are they?" Keoni had heard some really weird stories. His small hands worked quickly, polishing the shoes, head down, hair covering his face and shoulders hunched.

He still felt a little sick for mouthing off to that huge guy. He just couldn't let them talk to Keani like that.

"I just, I think they'r just joshin' us. Look at 'um laughing."
