Dragon riders and their pets

I've been wondering about dragon riders and their dragons, because I'm not sure about the relationship they share.
Is it more of a friendly bond, or the master-pet relationship like with a dog?
Do they communicate?
Can dragons even talk?
And do dragons travel everywhere with their riders?

Since my character is a dragon-rider, I'd love to know these things.

Some dragons talk and are highly intelligent.  (we have a whole page on that, anybody?)
A lot don't with varying degrees of intelligence.
I'd say despite the talking or not there always has to be a form of communication...  Rider bonding is like a bond-for-life thing, though I'd say more often than not more of a master-pet relationship in that the rider is responsible  for the dragon and they're generally the ones giving out the orders... but dragons have mind of their owns and they can travel without their riders. It depends on the dragon's intelligence/ sense of self i guess.

I needed to assure myself about some things about dragons, so when showing one in a RP, it would be right. Appears I guessed right when I thought they can speak!  ;D
