Leornid looked around in the big plaza, frantically looking for his quarry. He had been following the man for at least half an hour, ever since he saw him get out of an alley that seemingly led nowhere, looking pale. All the while, he cursed his curiosity. He wanted to be out of Connlaoth as soon as possible. He hated the place, and all its anti-magic laws. It was really annoying to have half the city guard falling on top of him every time he did some illusion magic, like last time.
Finally, he spotted the man. He was wearing a black cloak, and had put the hood up, unusual for such a hot summer day. He had stopped at the center of the plaza, frantically looking around. Leornid was still standing at the outskirts of the plaza, pretending to be niterested in one of those new Connlaothian crossbows a merchant was selling. Slowly, he started moving toward the shady man, pretending to be looking around, taking in the sights.
When he got closer, the man turned around and looked straight at him, as if sensing that he was following him. If that was the case, Leornid was ready to congratulate the man. He had never been spotted when he didn't want to be spotted. Well, except for that time when he was following that witch, and when he was tailing that mercenary,and...Still, he was a competent sneakster.
Suddenly, the air started smelling off. He could still smell all the normal city scents, like the smell of bread in the making, human sweat and feces, but there was something else. It smelled like...decay. The man had now stopped looking toward him, and was staring at a man that apparently had just entered the plaza. From the looks of him, he was definitely a noble.
That decay smell was getting stronger and stronger, and people had started noticing. Some were covering their noses with their hands, while some women were pressing scent boxes close to faces. The black-coated man was fidgeting now, which was really out of place if you considered the warm weather. But then, it was colder now than it was five minutes ago, wasn't it?
Just when Leornid came within ten paces of the black coated man, everything went black for a few seconds. The decay smell intensified, and Leornid actually shivered form the cold. Some people were screaming. When Leornid could see again, he cursed his curiosity using every curse he had ever heard.
All around the plaza, there were undead. Skeletons holding rusty weapons, Zombies flexing their arms, and even a Zombie Hulk, an enormous zombie, that was definitely going to be a challenge to fight. That noble the black coated man was looking at was already dead, and looked like he had been stabbed, clawed and bitten multiple times. The Black coated man himself was nowhere to be seen. Most people were running to escape, but this being Connlaoth, some men had already rallied behind two merchant stalls, and were fighting the undead with swords and crossbows, while others fought on thei own.
Leornid nocked an arrow to his bow and aimed at the nearest zombie. Count on his luck to be at a place like this at the best time. This was really going to be a challenge.
