Lions.

Why was it always lions.

Yasmin paced as she waited for the portcullis to open, her hands twitchy with nerves and belly tight with anticipation, as it always was before a fight. One of the guards had let on that the match today would be a team sport against lions, so that...wasn't as bad as it could be. Lions were predictable; they were powerful and they were deadly, and one misstep would mean jaws around her throat or a ripped off face--but they weren't cunning or manipulative like people were. They were just frightened and confused and starved and beaten into aggression.

And like her, they had no choice.

She felt terrible having to kill the poor beasts--but she thanked Hakeshna that she wouldn't have to add any tattoos to her fingers today. Better animals than people.

From beyond the heavy door, she could hear the shouts of the crowd and feel the vibrations of their stomping feet, all eager for the bloodbath to come, and she took a deep breath to clear her mind. It was almost time, which meant it was time to get into role. To lose herself and become the Lioness that lived for the sport and smiled through the blood spray. She checked herself over, adjusting the straps of her breast plate, checking the ties of her sandals.

When the door finally opened, she let her breath out and darted out into the arena with a skip in her step and a grin on her lips, scimitar in hand. She waved to the crowd and blew them kisses, turning in a circle to see them all, and saluted them with a flourish of her blade.

Yeah, that's right. Cheer your hearts out, you bloodthirsty jackals, she thought bitterly as she smiled and twirled her sword to show off--and keep her nervous hands busy. Like to see how long you'd cheer without these walls between us. Also, go fuck yourself. Kisses!

And she blew the crowd another kiss.

Vegter, known among those that frequented the arena bouts as The Entertainer, waited with calm patience. This was his life, his every day. He was born for this, raised in this world, trained to be the best, and that's what he was. The best. If you wanted a show, if you wanted excitement, you came to see Vegter Opschepperij dance in the arena. The portcullis began to raise, and the voices of the crowd grew more frantic with excitement. It had rattled to the top, and Vegter took his first step out and looked up at the crowd. His crowd, he told himself, his audience. As the portcullis began to descend, the gate guard called out to Vegter.
"Try not to kill Yasmin out there today. She's supposed to be your partner in this one." That was absurd, he thought. Vegter didn't need a partner, he didn't need anyone but the chaff that he would cut down. He'd decide later if keeping Yasmin alive would be better entertainment than ending her today.
Vegter strode forward with a swagger. The crowd was going mad with the anticipation. He lifted his arms and called to them, his adoring fans. "Are you ready for real entertainment? Vegter will entertain you!" He ran toward the center of the arena, performed two forward handsprings, followed by a front flip, and landed with a sweeping flourish of his arms. He was ready to face whatever today's challenge would be.

...Oh.

It was him.

Yasmin had been informed that this would be a team sport, and she had been nonplussed about it. It didn't matter to her who it was, so long as they were competent enough not to get her killed. And if they weren't? Well, if it was a matter of her living or dying, she was willing to make that sacrifice for them. As in, sacrifice them.

But then she saw...

Him.

And she could already feel the groan bubbling up, along with a warm rush of anger.

Him.

"The Entertainer", indeed!

While she had never had the joy of interacting with him in person, his reputation preceded him. He was an entertainer. And he lived for the thrill, for the kill. She had even witnessed a few such performances--and the memory sickened her. He enjoyed this. Genuinely enjoyed it. And those were the gladiators she hated the most--the volunteers and the thrill-seekers.

She froze in mid-wave, her hand still raised, and the dropped it slowly back to her side as she watched him pander. And the crowd fucking loved it.

Of course they did.

Oh, this was going to be fun.

Yasmin's smile twitched, and she realized her teeth were bared now in more of a grimace than a grin. But she quickly corrected that and turned her back to him in the pretense of waving at more of the crowd--who was in an utter uproar now, because of course he was a fan favorite. They never cheered half so loud for her--not that she was jealous or anything. It was just that, though she didn't even know him, she'd already decided she disliked him--and therefore everything he did was going to be irritating by default.

Turning back around, she shot him a piercing look. "Vegter. I've heard a lot about you," she said. "Try not to let your fans distract you?"

And then there was a metallic screech, signalling the opening of another portcullis, and Yasmin turned to look--and felt like she could vomit.

Because it wasn't lions being ushered through the gate, but people. Dirty and haggard, some large and hulking and terrifying, others small and shriveled and cowering.

Criminals.

This was a Hakeshna-damned execution.

Executions were one of Vegters favorite events. Massively outnumbered by criminals wearing rags and given subpar weapons. They were promised a new life as a gladiator if they could survive. Of course that meant that they'd have to kill the contenders that had been chosen to kill them, and kill any other poor fools that had survived as well. There could only be one. It was a rare thing for a new arena fighter to be chosen this way.
Vegter wasted no time on thought or hesitation. He pulled the twin axes from his back and raised them both in salute to his adoring fans. The beautiful weapons were fashioned like side-handle batons with axe heads sprouting from the business end of the weapons. Vegter spun them about, twisting and flipping them across his hands, around his wrists and forearms. His stride did not break as he dashed at the closest group of criminals. The criminals headed toward Vegter paused at the gladiators eagerness. Those that were cowering and not moving forward began to run away when they heard his gleeful laughter.
The largest of the cattle was only put off for a moment but then he moved to the front of his group and got ready for Vegter’s assault. He held a large rusted sword in two hands, and looking part ogre, was nearly 8’ tall. A strong, unexpected heave of Vegters arm, propelled one of his axes through the air so fast everyone was surprised when it wedged directly into the behemoths face. Long loping strides brought Vegter to the giant of a man before he could begin to topple. He ran straight up him like a wall, pulling the axe from his face and leaping off his shoulders. He sailed over the other criminals that were standing ready to fight and ran straight for those that were fleeing. Vegter delighted in the carnage, cutting them down as his fleet feet carried him past. Again and again he threw his axes forward ripping them from corpses as he dashed forward killing over and over. Their fear was delightful and the cheers of the crowd were delicious.

Yasmin would have rather faced Vetger himself than participate in an execution.

She had hoped the last one was...well, her last.

For a moment she stood there, stomach twisting; it took a great deal to make that emotional and mental shift, to both resign and steel herself to murdering helpless people when she'd been prepared for animals. Vetger, however, showed no such hesitation. He flew into the fray, laughing, and effortlessly cut down the largest of the group in a stunt that would have been beautiful if it wasn't so ugly and bloody.

And then he was past the falling body--and tearing into the runners.

He went straight past the real criminals, the real fighters, and right for the frightened ones. The criers. The petty criminals that begged and sobbed and cowered as he hacked into them.

For a moment, Yasmin stared in abject horror and disgust. It usually went that they fought the aggressive ones first, and that, hopefully by the time they'd finished them, the timid ones would have transitioned from flight to fight. At least then she could try to goad them into an attack so it at least felt like self defense, sick as that was. But Vetger had also left her with all the true criminals as he slayed the weak ones, and as they saw their fellows get sliced into bloody meat, rather than freeze up, they got desperate.

Especially when they saw the other gladiator was just a woman.

While a group of them split off to try and get Vetger from behind while he chased down the runners, the bravest of the rest of them surged forward with yells and flailing weapons, and Yasmin snapped into action. It was her or them. That's what it always came down to. And her sympathies ended where her life was threatened.

She ducked low and swept the legs out from the leader of the pack, knocking him into the men behind him and finishing him with a quick horizontal slash to the belly that spilled his guts into the sand. He wouldn't die immediately, but he was certainly out of commission, so she turned her focus to the others as they swarmed her with clumsy strikes.

These were thugs, not fighters. Their brute strength and hard swings might work against the untrained folk they stole from, but not a trained gladiator who had been tested and survived time and time again. Yasmin twisted and weaved, her smaller size a boon in many ways. Her blade sang through the air, opening a throat here, a face there, her hands growing slick with blood as her own blood roared in her ears. But the will to survive another day was stronger than her own morality, so she let it go and went to the place she always did when it came down to this.

As she planted her foot on one corpse's chest and struggled to yank her blade out of his skull, another man armed with only a heavy chain looped it around her neck and pulled. She choked, genuinely surprised (and a little impressed) before she stomped hard on his instep and sank her elbow into his gut. A strong headbutt to his chin dislodged him, and she swung around and kicked him to the ground. Finally, she pulled her blade free and flicked the blood off of it.

The man, whose buddies had abandoned him, scrambled backwards from her on his hands, eyes wild with terror. The chain was far from his grasp.

Yasmin sighed and kicked a rusted sword toward him, one dropped by another criminal. "Come on. Get up."

This may be an execution, but she wasn't about to kill a man on his knees.

Vegter danced through his prey, cutting them down with grace and beauty in each motion and strike. He spun and leaped never breaking his momentum. Blood splattered across his face and body mixing with his glistening sweat and ran down in rivulets of spent life. His smile never left his face, and his laughter broke out at seemingly random moments. Even those that had chased him at first turned to run as he finished the last of the cowards and brought his attention to those that were a bit more bold. The faster, stronger ones, had been at the lead of the pack that pursued him, but they had fallen almost as quickly as those that Vegter had chased down before them.
The man was truly delighting in the carnage, and that alone was hard for even the boldest among them to handle. As those that were stronger fell before Vegter, the lesser men and women lost their courage, and their hope. It was not long before he stood alone on his side of the arena. All those he had chased were lying dead, faces in the sand. Those that had thought to get him from behind were now dead as well. Some stared sightlessly up into the sky, their souls riding away on their wings of bravery. Vegter still felt the thrill. He craved more blood, and there were several criminals over by his "partner." It was time to pay them a visit.

She gave the man a chance. He picked up the sword, and Yasmin let him make the first move. But he was clumsy in his terror, and she cut him down easily, seeing no point in giving him false hope and drawing out the inevitable like a cat toying with a mouse. She delivered his death standing, so he could at least die with some dignity.

The remaining prisoners were not faring so well. They were cowering amongst themselves, their hope long gone, some vomiting from the sight of all that death and gore, or just from sheer terror, some sobbing. This was the worst. How could she be expected to deal with them? Whatever adrenaline had fueled her, she felt it seeping out of her, the fight draining from her. But she knew she had to deal with it. She wouldn’t be allowed out of here until she and Vetger had dispatched the criminals—or the criminals had dispatched the two of them.

She sighed. “You all realize if you kill us, you’ve got a chance,” she barked. “Get up! Get up and—“

A collective gasp and whimper rippled through the remaining prisoners, and Yasmin turned to see Vetger approaching. Well. Wouldn’t be long now. “Or die like cattle. Your choice,” she said, and slid her blade into the closest prisoner’s chest.

It was a mercy killing at this point.

Vegter could see that his partner was not interested in slaughtering fleeing weaklings. Whether it was a desire for a real fight or guilt at killing unarmed victims didn't matter to him. He just knew she was looking to fight, not slaughter. That meant if he swung his axes at her she'd be inclined to fight back. Vegter would enjoy that. She wasn't bred for this like he was though, so she wouldn't last long. He'd cut her down like all the rest. Vegter didn't need a partner, Vegter was the BEST! He started spinning his axes as he picked up his pace. He was about to let out a war cry when the ground began to rumble, and the floor grates began to slide back.
Floor grates were for large predator animals. Vegter came to a stop. He lived for the fight but he was no fool. Bears would be a decent challenge, lions or tigers would be a bit more difficult. He waited to see what came out. One of the criminals near Yasmin fell into an opening grate and let out a terrible scream at the roar of a tiger that soon was upon him. Tigers. Vegter ran toward Yasmin. It would be best if they were close together to fend off the large cats. Then Vegter saw a bear lumber from one of the other gates, and heard the howls of Wolves from another. Well this was about to get very interesting. Perhaps those in charge of the coliseum were tired of Vegter at last, or maybe this Yasmin, was more capable than he anticipated. Either way, making it through a full menagerie with only two gladiators, even a performer as great as Vegter, would be difficult.

"...You have got to be kidding me."

Apparently, the public execution wasn't exciting enough for their bloodthirsty spectators. Oh no, now they had to add tigers and bears and wolves to the list, animals that they kept angry and desperate and hungry and frightened by abusing them and starving them--and already several of the beasts had gotten a meal. Heart in her throat, Yasmin put her back to Vegter's. There were only five prisoners left now--five distractions, a cold voice whispered in her mind. As cruel and unfair and sickening as it all was, she was not going to die here today.

"Really?" she called up to the crowd, throwing her arms up. "Were we that boring? Fuck, you're hard to please! Fine. If it's murder you want..."

A bear lumbered closer, and Yasmin twisted and thrust her sword through the eye of a remaining prisoner. He was dead in an instant, and she twisted her scimitar free and kicked the man in the chest, hard, sending his body toppling toward the bear that swiftly snapped his head between its jaws. Better a quick death than the death an animal could give; starving animals didn't care if their prey was dead before they started to eat them. Of all the animals, it was the tigers that had her most worried. Bears were powerful, and wolves were terrifying in a pack, but tigers...tigers were awful alone, worse even than lions.

"The tigers are gonna be a problem!" she called to Vegter as the bear dragged away the corpse, and fresh screams rang out as the wolves loped in, already singling out the weakest of the prisoners and circling him, taking him down with quick bites to his legs. His screams took on a new, feverish pitch as they began to rip him apart, feasting upon his belly and groin while he thrashed.

"We should take them out first!"

As though on cue, one of the tigers leaped from the grate and let out a bone-chilling roar, its eyes bright and frenzied as it lunged for Vegter.

Vegter hadn't survived this long by being stupid. He needed Yasmin to make it through this, and he needed the last few criminals as well. She was a useful tool, they were bait. As the tiger lunged, Vegter pushed Yasmin toward the distracted bear, and slid under the tigers swiping claws. He rolled forward and was up into a quick dash. He slashed open the stomach of the nearest criminal, reducing the woman to a bloodcurdling screaming distraction as he flew at the wolves. Taking out the tiger would be hard and they needed no interference from other people or animals. Three wolves, only three, and focused on their thrashing meal. He'd finish them quickly.
Vegter threw both axes with full force. One caught a wolf in the side of the head, the other caught one in the ribs. Both went down, but the third quickly turned it's attention to the threat, and rushed the gladiator, blood and foam trailing from its mouth. It lunged at Vegter, before he could get to his axes, and he fell to the ground with the wolves jaws snapping at his face and throat. The claws of the beast dug into his chest and stomach as it fought to take a bite out of Vegter, only his hands pushing back at it's face keeping him alive. With some quick maneuvering Vegter got both his hands into the wolfs mouth and began to pry it's jaws apart. Soon the wolf was whining in pain, and attempting to scramble away, scratching Vegter further, but the gladiator wouldn't relent. With a terrible rending sound Vegter tore the wolfs jaw apart, then pushed the whimpering beast away from him. He then moved to fetch his axes and turned to see the screaming woman being devoured by the tiger. Then he turned his gaze to Yasmin.

Three wolves down, which left the two hungry tigers and the currently occupied bear. One of the tigers was tearing into the woman, whose screams were dying into sickening gurgles Yasmin was certain to hear in her dreams, but the other tiger was still free, agitated and confused and overstimulated by the smell and sight of blood and the humans that had scattered and fallen like prey. There were only four left—two prisoners, plus Vegter and Yasmin.

And those remaining prisoners were alive for a reason.

They were the survivors, the fighters, the predators among the prey.

And they viewed Vegter and Yasmin the same way the two viewed them: sacrifices for the animals so that they might survive.

One of the prisoners, a tall, burly man with a frame wide enough to fill a doorway launched himself at Yasmin. She had only taken her eyes off of him for two seconds. One second to look at Vegter as he finished the wolf. Another second to eye the tiger stalking closer. One second was all it took for the man to slam his fist into her cheek and kick her legs out from under her, hoping to make her an easy meal, but she hooked her legs around his as she fell and pulled him down with her, pulling his full weight atop her just as the tiger, attracted by the jerking motion and loud cries, attacked.

It was the only thing that saved her, that literal meat shield. The tiger ripped into the man atop her and his shrieks pierced her ears, his hot blood splattering her skin as its teeth struck an artery. Its claws gouged her thigh as the man fought back weakly, but its attention was on him, not the smaller human crushed beneath both bodies, tiger and man. She cried out, breath wheezing, more surprised than pained as the rush of the fight numbed her, and she wriggled desperately to break free and reach her sword. The world swam dizzyingly, and she would have laughed—a panicked, hysterical laugh—at the thought that this, of all things, might be what finally finished her. Suffocating beneath two heavy bodies.

"Vegter!" she she choked out, clawing at the sand.

Vegter heaved an axe in Yasmin’s direction. It spun through the air sailing over the tiger with a whoosh missing its apparent target as Vegter sprinted in behind it. When the axe struck something and a sword clattered to the ground beside Yasmin’s head, it quickly became apparent that the last criminal had just been taken out of the equation. He’d seen this as an opportunity to kill Yasmin and the tiger and his criminal competition but Vegter had other plans. Moments later Vegter’s other axe was burying itself into the tigers spine. The well placed blow paralyzed the beast, creating more dead weight upon the pile. Vegter kicked it aside with a single powerful blow, the quickly dying man under it falling away as well. He couldn’t decide whether to try and hold in his spilling organs or the blood flowing from his neck as he lost consciousness in seconds. Vegter walked past without a glance at the now freed Yasmin to fetch his thrown axe, then turned to find that the bear and remaining tiger had found each other. The sheer strength of the beasts was amazing to watch but Vegter knew what needed to be done. Holding both his axes in one hand Vegter picked up a spear at his feet and hurled it with the accuracy of a javelineer. The throw missed the lunging bear but pierced directly into the skull of the tiger, dropping the beast to the ground. The rabid bear, realizing it’s opponent had fallen shifted its attention to the only thing left moving, Vegter. It ran at the gladiator, fast lumbering stride closing the gap quickly. Vegter spun his axes in his hands and dashed at the bear as well. As he drew close he leaped through the air bringing both of his axes down in an overhead chop with a mighty war cry.
“VEGTERRRRRRRR!” His strikes were true, both axes burying into the skull of the bear, but it didn’t go down. Axes still lodged in its cranium, the wounded beast stood on its hind legs and made a wide swing at the gladiator. He dodged the blow, and brought his fist forward in a mighty punch. The blow was strong enough to knock the wind from the bear and it staggered back stunned. The burst of adrenaline fading the beast collapsed, its wounds too great to continue. Vegter strode forward in victory to pull his axes free. He gave them a theatrical flourishing spin, tossing them into the air to catch them, and holding them up high he yelled to his adoring fans.
        “VEGTERRRRRRRR!” The crowd went wild.

The man was insufferable. As Vegter shouted in victory, Yasmin sank her face into her hand and sighed.

His name. His own name was his battle cry and victory shout all in one. Oh, she had heard about Vegter, heard he was full of himself and a showboat, but...seriously? And the crowd was eating it up! They loved it!

So much secondhand embarrassment.

And hey, wait a minute! She had done stuff, too! Why were they cheering him like she hadn’t taken out a chunk of the contenders!

And why did she care, in any case? She hated killing. She hated every second of this business. Why should she be...

Her stomach dropped.

No. No. She was not jealous.

How bloody sick was that?

Bitterness seeped in, replacing the exhilaration and fear and frenzy of the fight. She pushed herself to her feet, wobbling as the adrenaline wore off and the pain trickled in. She was bleeding from deep claw gouges in her left thigh, the blood running down her leg and puddling in her sandal. The tiger had missed any major arteries, hitting mostly muscle, but it still fucking hurt and she would need to get it treated. For now, she pushed the pain away and snatched up her scimitar and gave it a twirl. She performed an exaggerated curtesy, like she had seen foreign rich bitches perform, channeling Vetger’s obnoxiousness.

“Don’t act like it was all you, you ass,” she told him out of the corner of her mouth.

Vegter picked up Yasmin’s annoyance and caught her sass but didn’t rebut with his usual quick and deadly response. Instead he did something he rarely did, shared the limelight. Harnessing one of his axes on his back he grabbed Yasmin’s hand and lifted her scimitar into the air with another great shout. “YASMIIIIIN!” The crowd picked it up, shouting her name, and a chant of their names began. “Yasmin! Vegter! Yasmin! Vegter!” Her popularity and by extension her value, would increase from this. Vegter knew how to work the crowd. He gave a hearty laugh, turned to Yasmin placing an unsolicited kiss on her mouth and slapped her ass with his inhuman strength. He pulled his axe off his back again, raising them both into the air once more as he yelled to further rile up the crowd. The guards on either side of the arena were opening the gladiators exits and Vegter began to make his way toward his. “Enjoy the fame while it lasts,” Vegter shouted back at Yasmin. “You weren’t as useless as I expected.”

Vegter was a monster. A murderer. Like a leopard, he reveled not only in the hunt and the kill, but in the killing. He loved this and it showed, and she anticipated cruelty far before she anticipated him...

...Pumping the crowd up for her?

He grabbed her arm and she startled and stiffened, ready to swing with her other fist as a real jolt of fear lanced through her. She should have held her fucking tongue. But instead of throwing her down or pulling her into a punch, he lifted her arm and roared her name to the crowd.

And they ate it up.

Chanted their names.

Dumbstruck, Yasmin stared into the crowd, and was thrown off kilter enough that his sudden kiss and slap on the ass caught her off guard. She let out a muffled yelp against his lips, the slap making her ass sting and whole body jolt, and she knew damned good and well she'd be feeling that the next time she sat. And a good while after. Hakeshna, damn him! But she knew better than to react, knew better than to do anything but grin at him with too much teeth, part grimace and part restrained growl, even as her face burned.

I didn't ask for your help.

She forced the growl into a smile. Hid the words behind her lips. As much as she wanted to react, she didn't dare.

Poor beasts were one thing, but someone like Vegter? That was a whole 'nother animal.

There were certain people she did her best to give a wide berth, people who genuinely scared her, people she knew she didn't stand a chance against if she got on their bad side. Vegter definitely fell into that category.
