Name: Alexis Mandel
Age: 37
Sex: Female
Species: Human
Ethnicity: Connlaoth
Height: 5'4"
Occupation: Colonel of the Ash Guard mercenaries
Residence: Ash Guard encampment, Vythe

Physical Description
Alexis Mandel would normally be seen as beautiful, with lean, delicate features and well accentuated curves.  Crystal blue eyes and platinum blonde hair give the woman an almost ethereal quality.  However, several scars cover the left side of her face and burn scars cover her right arm; abject lessons on the matter of firearm safety.

Her fashion has shifted since leaving her former order.  She favors mostly simple high-necked linen jackets, closely fitted and tightly laced about the waist to help if conform to her shape.  The sleeves are also snug, buttoned from the elbow to the wrist to ward off the cold.  She keeps her hair fairly short, swept to the side to hide her scars which are further concealed by a feathered hat.  At her waist, she also has a heavily laden belt, from which hangs her various weapons: a long bastard sword is slung below her left hip and an ornate rondel dagger rests opposite on her right.

She also owns a 55-pound suit of armor, ornately decorated, with a mirror finish and brass edgework.  In battle this is worn under a belt to carry her sword and dagger, as well as a bandolier strung with a dozen powder cartridges as well as her brass-chased wheellock arquebus.

Personality
Alexis is a rebel and a staunch enemy of hypocrisy.  She is avidly opposed to the political climate in Connlaoth, with a strong moral compass.  She can come off as intense and severe, and refuses to conceal her loathing for those she has no respect for.

She does have a softer side.  She acts like a mother for those under her command and is protective of those she feels have been wronged by fortune.  Where most Connlaothians pity mages, Alexis pities Mordecais, who she fears are blinded by their zealotry.  She draws no distinction between miracle and magic, even ready to view her own powers as merely another school of magic.

Abilities
  • Adharism: Alexis carries this rare trait, allowing her to nullify any supernatural ability or phenomenon.  Her range is about 3 meters.
  • Marksmanship: A system for handling personal firearms.  She favors her compact arquebus but can also use a brace of saddle pistols when the need arises.
  • Longsword: Alexis' preferred sidearm is and ornate bastard sword, well suited to two-handed use.  It still manages to be light enough to be wielded in one hand alongside a pistol.
  • Wrestling: Though she tries to avoid it, Alexis is able to grapple her enemies to the ground.  She lacks the strength to match most skilled opponents and mostly focuses on creating openings for her dagger.
  • Horsemanship: A competent rider, she can train a horse to do as commanded in battle, allowing her to fight reliably from the saddle.
  • Polearm: On foot or horseback, Alexis can fight well enough with a staff or spear; no doubt a part of her Adhara training.

Relationships

History
Countess Martina Mandel had never fully recovered from bringing her second child into the world and barely two months shy of Alexis' first birthday, the ailing Lady passed.  To his credit, the lord Count Gustav Mandel (pending) would quickly come to cherish his daughter, a blessed remnant of his late wife's spirit that continued to survive in the world.  She wanted for very little, even as the second child - a girl-child no less - who would never inherit her father's estate.

The girl was only 11 when agents of the Church came; Alexis had been found to be an Adhara and was quickly conscripted into the Order of the White Lily.  She took to her martial training rather quickly, having only had her brother as a playmate for so long.  She was particularly fond of firearms, a fact she admitted to her father, who quickly gifted her a brace of intricate wheellock pistols she still carries with her.  Meanwhile, her tactical mind saw her take command a company of mage hunters...

Like many of her fellows, Alexis had been raised to be suspicious of magic.  However, the war on magic brought with it a crisis of faith.  Taking part in the Siege of Havanlaar, she saw the city's inhabitants cut down en masse as their homes were put to the torch.  God had sanctioned this massacre and she had been His instrument...

Faith and loyalty shaken; Alexis abandoned her duties.  Suddenly an outcast to the orthodoxy of her former people, the woman took to wandering.  With few skills outside of warfare, she sought a noble benefactor to whom she could ply her trade.  Funded by Blaith Harmond of Thurgal, she now commands a regiment of mercenaries in the form of her "Ash Guard."
