Physical Description

Born of Yoreiqi and Thanati descent, Kaliko is a beauty all of her own. Her skin is very dark as is her hair which she wears in long, neatly kept dreadlocks that are often tied together at the base of her neck to keep them from swinging into her eyes when she is working. While her hair is common to her Yoreiqi mother's genes, her violet eyes come from her father's Thanati side of the family.

Kaliko has a set of black filigree-like tattoos that she earned on her fifteenth birthday. The tattoos extend from her lips to her chin then down around her neck to form a collar about her shoulders, chest, and back. (Collar Tattoo: Teya Salat).

Aside from her tattoos, Kaliko also has an extensive set of shiny pink scars that run up from her thighs and hips to her torso and along her arms. They are permanent lichtenberg figures from having been struck by lightning. They are incredibly sensitive to touch due to their deep nature.

In addition to all this, she has a massive set of black feathered wings with red "shoulder" caps in the same pattern as a red-winged blackbird. The bottom feathers of her wings just barely brush the ground while the tops of her wings extend to the same height as the top of her head.

Kaliko prefers dark clothing that covers as much skin as possible so as to hide her scars and tattoos. She recognizes that while her figure was considered beautiful on the separate islands of her parents, it is not seen as the same kind of beauty on the mainland and she chooses to limit the amount of staring and trouble her striking figure causes by hiding it away from others.

Personality

Sweet-tempered and loving, Kaliko would be the ultimate mother if given the chance. She loves children and helping others in any way she can. Her calm disposition and desire to find compromise in combination with her love of knowledge makes her an ideal teacher as she imparts her wisdom to others.

While she is used to the rumors and ghost stories concerning her and her gifts, Kaliko does her best to not let them get to her. Years of practice has left her less sensitive to it however, it has made her quieter and more reserved than she was in her youth. She tends to keep to herself when not fulfilling her obligations as a teacher and archivist.

History

Kaliko's past begins with her parents. Her mother Nani was a native of Yoreiq while her father Bipin Joshi was from Thanatos. Bipin was merchant sailor who made port in Nani's village long enough conceive Kaliko before being on his way. From time to time he would return but his marriage in Thanatos eventually led to the end of those returns and Kaliko had very few memories of him growing up as anything more than a stranger.

She grew up very loved by her people and her family. Kaliko was fully immersed in the Yoreiqi culture despite her being of mixed ancestry. By the age of fifteen she received her ceremonial tattoos denoting her as an adult. Also at fifteen a rather unexpected visitor returned to the island after years of absence.

Bipin returned to the village and not as a merchant nor as a lover. He came as a father expecting to marry his daughter off to an expectant groom back in Thanatos. Despite the discomfort of the village to allow it, Kaliko jumped at the chance for adventure and to see the world. As she was an adult it was her decision and right to go if she chose.

With a teary goodbye and a village full of warm hugs, Kaliko was soon on her way to a land she knew nothing about. On the journey there her father had done his best to instruct his eager daughter on the customs of his people. By the time they arrived in Thanatos, Kaliko was ready in theory to become a woman and wife of the Thanati or at least that is what her father led the people to believe. For while Kaliko did understand the physical gestures and practices, even that their main goddess was Inima, she could not speak more than a few words of common and most certainly could not speak a word of the Thanati dialect.

Kaliko would soon learn that her husband-to-be Sharma Patil was to be married to her out of a debt owed to her father by the man's family. Unable to give her husband a family name, as Kaliko had none of her own and names in the Thanati culture were passed on from the mother's side, Kaliko chose to honor her mother who she missed more than anything and gave him the surname of Nani.

Sharma, Kaliko found was a strong man, of both spirit and body. While they did not find love with each other he brought her safety and protection, a sense of security in a world that was not of her making anymore. Sharma fought for Kaliko's peace of mind when village elders squabble that she should be cast out as an outsider and helped Kaliko prove her "faith" in Inima. Whether he believed she actually followed the faith or not was not something he ever pressed or asked. It was not important to him.

A year later at age sixteen, with the debt still unfulfilled between the families, Kaliko chose to marry Sharma's younger brother Shashi to put an end to it once and for all. Shashi in turn she found to be far quieter and more reclusive than his elder, bolder, and louder brother. The trio got along well enough, making a home out of what they could. Although it was from Sharma that Kaliko gained a sense of strength and Shashi a desire to learn along with an understanding of languages and culture, it was her third husband Surya that would lead her to learn the art of compromise and balance.

At eighteen, two years after her marriage to Shashi, Kaliko decided to marry playful and hot-headed Surya. The quartet had trouble getting along at first with Sharma's need to be in charge, Shashi's need to be alone, and Surya's need to challenge everything and be in everyone's way but with Kaliko's determination, she made the family work.

While it was unheard of for her to be so old and without children despite her three husbands, the men tried to not let it affect their towering wife. After a great deal of trying and worry on Kaliko's part with several miscarriages, she fell pregnant and remained so for six months with no issue. Her husbands were delighted in their own ways and did all in their in power to make sure she was kept safe and happy. She herself was overjoyed to finally be blessed with a child and with a family that while not loving her cared for her. Love was not something she knew in the way mainlanders understood it, but she knew what family meant and even with three husbands she had missed the sense of community and home from Yoreiq until the expectant arrival of a baby brought everyone together.

By age of twenty-one, Kaliko could not have been happier which is why it was even more tragic when their humble family home was not only destroyed in a severe island storm but all three of the Nani males were killed and Kaliko herself was struck by a stray bolt of lightning that left her not only maimed but childless. She endured excruciating amounts of pain for several days before being in a strong enough state-of-mind to learn of the loss of all four of her dear family members. Some of the elders dared to accuse her of having brought a curse on the family for being an outsider and not a true believer in Inima.

Bereft, scarred in both mind and body, Kaliko finally fled from Thanatos and arrived on the mainland by the age of twenty-two. For months she wandered aimlessly, communing with the spirits of her dead husbands and driving herself into a deeper depression until one day the three men came to her in a dream and bid her to get to her feet and continue onward, to seek solace and sanctuary in a man of shadows.

Awakening from the dream left her with a clearer head than she had had in nearly a year and Kaliko was quick to follow her instructions. Shortly afterwards she met a ranger of the Vigilant Shadows whom she offered her help. The next day she awoke in the Clockwork City and her life soon returned to a quiet if somewhat reclusive existence. Unwilling to be a mother herself after her own recent traumas, Kaliko took to working in the great library, putting to use the things Shashi had taught her as she in turn taught and provided for others. She grew to love her work and would not have it any other way even after having served the Vigilant Shadows for forty-five years. Kaliko has not forgotten nor forsaken her past but she is content with her present and her future and believes herself to be as happy as is possible for one as cursed as she.
