Winters-Feather

Taiyou stood, shocked and confused as Sir Thortin introduced his son. Adrius was not at ALL what she was used to seeing for a knight, nor was he exactly 'the man of her dreams.' He wasn't muscular at all! She wondered if he was a slacker who just got the knight title because of his father. She was pretty sure he was a little shorter than she was. And why was SHE all dolled up when he was dressed like THAT?
A little  rude, isnt' it? she thought.

She was further shocked when he started talking. At the words 'not your betrothed,' her green eyes widened. She opened her mouth to speak, inhaling a sharp breath, but she clammed her mouth shut as he walked away. Taiyou watched him go, unsure whether she ought to be downright insulted or grateful.
Just like that, it's over, she thought. She could've laughed.

Her mother, on the other hand, was absolutely out of sorts. Taiyou could tell Anwar was furious by the light in her eye, but she was a master at putting on a cheery face, a must for any merchant.
But what now?
"I'll just wait-" Taiyou began, but a look from Anwar shut her up.
Okaaaay, Taiyou thought, letting out a breath.
My groom ditched me, she told Shioko. Guess I have that effect on people.

"I could track him down?" Taiyou suggested  awkwardly with a shrug.   She didn't care much for the contract either, but she felt bad for his father.

Niscin, who had placed his head in his hands, looked up at Taiyou. "Could you? I mean I couldn't ask you to do that my dear. I don't my errant son to cause hardship for you. Oh blast him! I'm so sorry Anwar, I have no idea how he turned out like that! Me and Cella always did our best for him? We raised him the same way as his brother and Trace turned out fine!" The man shook his head again.

"He'll have to be back anyway," Niscin mumbled to himself," he didn't take that stupid suit with him." The nobleman looked up. "Well anyway, why don't you ladies come inside. Unless you really want to go after him Taiyou? I won't stop you, but I insist that Anwar come inside."

----------------------------------------------------------------

While Niscin talked to Taiyou and Anwar, Adrius made his way up the road away from the manor. He didn't really have a specific destination in mind, he just knew he had to leave the house. He wandered for a few moments before he decided to go to a nearby park. The place was mostly abandoned, and Adrius sat down on a nearby bench.

Why had his father thought he'd be okay with this. Would he be fine with it if he was a different person? What if he was his brother? Would Trace accept a fiancé that their father chose? Why should he care what Trace what do?

It was all so confusing, what he should and shouldn't do. All he really knew was that he wouldn't go along blindly with whatever his father said.

Suit? Taiyou thought, wondering if he meant a suit of plate armor. Those were precious to knights. Taiyou herself owned her own costumed suit, adapted for flight. She bowed before Sir Thortin.
"It's my duty to help," she said, before turning to her scowling mother.
"I wont dirty the skirt," Taiyou promised.  "Or the shoes," she added as her mother opened her mouth to speak again before  going off.

Anwar sighed and turned to the troubled father.
"I'd be delighted," she said, defeated, as she held out her arm to be escorted.

Taiyou  had seen Adrius run up the road away from the estate. She called upon one of the breezes stored in her belt to chase after Adris. She followed idly after it. Taiyou was grateful for the chance to escape, even though she had not stepped into the house. It was nice to walk, though the slippers were not made for strolls. She could tell the gravel was harsh on its soles.

Still, it gave her time to think about what Adrius had said. She alone could not have declined the relationship - not for her own sake, but for her family's. But if Adrius made the decision, there was no stake behind it. It was perfect. After a few minutes, a cool breeze brushed by her cheeks.  Taiyou smiled. She had not been to the park in a very long time.

---

The moon  hanging lazily over head, Taiyou found Adrius in its light, lost in his head. Though she stepped quietly, her presence was given away by the bells in her hair, a small tinkling noise.
She stopped in front of him, her hands clasped.
"You won't run away again if I sit down?" she asked, arching a brow.
A sheepish smile tugged at her lips.

Alegretto

Why was the world so unfair? Why was it that his brother who barely tried could become so strong, and Adrius never could? Why didn't people appreciate the hard work he'd put in to find a solution? Why why why? These questions were getting him nowhere, but still they throbbed so frustratingly in his head.

A woman's voice, however, broke into Adrius' reverie, and he looked up with some surprise to see Taiyou standing nearby. He almost snapped at her for interrupting his thoughts, but he stopped himself. He still felt bad for leaving her like that, he was well aware it was two steps beyond rude, and her words made him feel even guiltier.

He returned her sheepish smile. "No I won't bolt, I promise. Look, I really am sorry for doing that to you, but I just," he paused for a moment to breathe, "I just can't go along with what my father puts in front of me. Not anymore." He gave a bitter laugh. "Besides, let's be honest, you probably don't want someone like me anyway."

-------------------------------------

Back at the Thortin home, Niscin was standing with Anwar in the sitting room. They were waiting for the servants to finish preparing dinner, and Niscin was still apologizing for Adrius' behavior. "I just don't know, Anwar. I don't understand how he ended up so, rebellious. He was always a good kid, stayed out of the way, got along with his siblings. Quite frankly his behavior over the past few years confounds me!"

Winters-Feather

Taiyou nodded curtly and promptly sat down.
"Good, because  we need to talk," she said, adjusting her sash so that the material would not catch in the bench.   She took in a deep breath before turning to Adrius , her eyes full of determination.
Can't believe I'm asking anyone this...
"I know  you don't know me or owe me anything, but I've a favor  to ask. "

---

Anwar laughed, despite herself.
"I'm sorry," she explained. "It's just... Taiyou, being a mage and a dragon rider, it's overwhelming, I ... oh!"
She sighed, wiping a tear from her eye, finding comfort in her tea.
"They find their own way. It scares me, sometimes."

Alegretto

Adrius looked at Taiyou with a slight suspicion in his eye. He shifted in his seat a bit as he thought about the girl's request. He didn't want to be tied down by some request or task, but the glint of steal in her gaze said that it was something she truly cared about. What kind of man would he be if he didn't at least hear her out?

"Well," he spoke, "I can't make any guarantees, but I guess there isn't anything wrong with just asking. What is this favor?"

--------

Niscin sighed. "Don't they just. I don't even know what Adrius is capable of any more. He's a mage, did I tell you that? Controls rocks. An earth mage or something, I don't really know. I'm just worried that his power is going to take him down a bad path. Magic isn't like strength gained by hard work, it's instantly acquired. Power like that can be dangerous...

The middle-aged knight laughed warily. "Maybe I just worry too much. No matter how much of an ingrate my son is, he does seem to have a good head on his shoulders. Speaking of which, your Taiyou does too. She seems like an earnest, well-minded girl."

Winters-Feather

Taiyou grinned widely at Adrius' response.  She liked his caution.
"Your support," she said frankly. "At the very least to ensure I don't get married to your brother since you won't have me. Which I am grateful for, truly," she added, hastingly.
Taiyou bit her lip.

"And not that there's anything WRONG with him, either, but I rather have control over my decisions where I can, while I can." she scoffed and shook her head as she rubbed her ring. "Well? Can you promise me that?"

---

Anwar listened thoughtfully as Niscin spoke, and smiled sympathetically at his troubles. She bit her tongue, holding herself back not to argue and grateful her daughter wasn't there to hear his words on magic.

She sat up proud at his approval of her daughter and keenly decided to keep the truth behind Taiyou's ring to herself. Magic was dangerous.
"Yes, she is," Anwar said. "I am proud to be the mother of such a dragon rider, truly. Her father is, too."

Alegretto

Taiyou's words: "not that there's anything wrong with him," elicited a chuckle from Adrius. "Trust me Taiyou, there's more than a few things wrong with my brother. But don't worry, I totally get where you're coming from with the making your own decisions thing. I'll definitely try my best to help you avoid and engagement with my brother, you have my word."

It wasn't really any skin of his back to promise her that, and he did feel kind of bad about just up and leaving Taiyou like that in front of her mother. Speaking of her mother...

"So, if you don't mind me asking Taiyou, why is your mother so determined to have you married? Is it just because of that stupid contract our father's made?"

----

"That bring me to another point Anwar, Niscin was saying. "What ever happened to that old trouble maker? I haven't seen or heard from or of him in a long while."

Winters-Feather

Taiyou chuckled hollowly at Adrius' questions as she rose to her feet.
"Isn't the answer to that obvious?" she asked him. "Most girls my age are married, you know. I'm eligible AND a knight. This has got to be the hardest part of my station. Now, then."
She placed a hand on her hip as she turned to face the young nobleman.
"I promised your father I'd take you home. May I?" she asked.

-----

Anwar took in a breath, and sat up straighter at the question.
"He's in Essyrn," she said. "On a lengthy mission."
It was true that was most of what she knew, though not entirely the full story.
"The last letter I received was a few months ago," she continued, with confidence. She continued to talk about the contents of the letter- the descriptions of the foreign city-state and its current political strifes. She talked about her husband's sons.
"They're taking good care of that old fool," Anwar said with a fond chuckle.

Alegretto

Adrius shrugged. He didn't know a lot about girls Taiyou's age, even if that was also around his age. Just wasn't one of those things he paid attention to.

Her question elicited a frown from Adrius. He considered refusing, but he knew he had to go back eventually. "Alright, but for the record I'm going back because I want to, okay?" he said with a quick grin.

He stood up from the bench and stretched his arms above his head. He'd been sitting their longer than he thought and there was a soreness about him that he knew came from sitting still for far too long.

"Lead the way," he said with another quick smile.

-------

Niscin chuckled as well. "I'm glad to hear that he's doing well. I know it's a trip, but he should really come back to Adela sometime to see you and Taiyou. Hey, then I could see him too. It's been far too long."

Winters-Feather

Taiyou rolled her eyes playfully and shook her head.
Men are so stubborn, she thought, cheerfully strolling down the park's path. Just then, a plop and the breaking of a stick in the darkness. Taiyou hissed, her body growing tense and defensive.
"What was-" she said when a deep croak followed.
Taiyou slouched, embarrassed.
"I'm too tense," she muttered.

It took her another two yards to realized she had called upon the wind, like she normally did when she freaked out.
That's odd, Taiyou thought. She slyly turned her gaze towards Adrius, and tried to nudge the wind to give him a nudge. Nothing.
The knight reached for her sword. Realizing she wasn't carrying it, she gritted her teeth and held to her quarterstaff.
Shioko, she called out  urgently in her mind, reaching for her dragon. Park. Now. Attackers.

"Please tell me you have a weapon, Adrius," she groaned as she felt Shioko's anger and fear ripple through her.
Just then, three figures jumped down from the trees. Their bodies were like shadows, in tight dark clothes, their faces hidden behind masks. As one rushed towards Adrius with a club, two lunged for Taiyou. She swung her quarterstaff, but one slipped past her blow, their hand around her neck.

Alegretto

Adrius was following Taiyou closely, but his senses weren't as finely tuned as her's, so when she exclaimed "what was-" he wasn't quite sure what she was talking about. Still, when the tension flowed out of her, he figured it was nothing to worry about.

However they hadn't gone more than a few paces when he noticed that his companion was looking at him. He stared back at Taiyou and could see that she'd raised her quarterstaff. He was about to ask her what was going on when she inquired if he had a weapon. "I don't. Why? What the hell is goi-"

Adrius' cut off his own sentence when he shouted in surprise at the arrival of three figures in black. The young man barely had any time to react as one of them lunged for him swinging a club. He jumped backwards, and brought his fists up in a fighter's stance.

Even as he prepared for his adversary's next attack, Adrius knew that he had no chance at victory. He could dodge, but he'd run out of stamina quickly and there was no way he had the physical strength to fight off his opponent. His only hope was Taiyou...

With that in mind, Adrius glanced over quickly to see how his companion was doing. It looked as if one her assailants had an arm around her neck. That was bad. "Taiyou!" Adrius shouted with genuine concern.

Winters-Feather

Taiyou gasped, her eyes matching the ones behind the mask. Stone cold and dark they were. Taiyou couldn't tell what color. The attacker's mask  and hood covered most of their face, leaving little else to identify them with. Taiyou gritted her teeth, motivated by Adrius' cry. With a loud grunt, she kicked the man choking her, which gave her enough distance to use her staff. Delivering a few quick blows which had one man temporarily stunned and the other off their feet, Taiyou rushed towards Adrius' side.

"Ya have NO idea what's coming for ya," Taiyou growled as the man pulled out a long dagger.
She concentrated hard, trying to push through the barrier that was blocking her energy.  She set herself low as the man lunged for her. Taiyou dodged, using her lighter weight and stationary position against his. The man, however, was swift, and blocked her counter attack.  He attacked again, this time successfully drawing blood.
Taiyou gasped more in horror than in pain at the sight of the slash in the left sleeve of her choli.
"I just got this," she lamented numbly.
Taiyou pictured whirlwinds in her mind. She could feel the walls and was ready to burst through..

One of the men  with a tranquilizer blow dart blew a dart towards Adrius.

Alegretto

When Taiyou got near him Adrius' adversary backed off. He did his best to look as dangerous as Taiyou when she raised her quarterstaff, but he couldn't quite manage it. His small physique wasn't exactly well constructed for physical intimidation.

When one lunged at Taiyou, another coordinated a club attack on Adrius, trying to separate the pair. He had to dodge the blow, leaping sideways, and a gap formed between him and his ally. When she gasped, Adrius turned to look at her. In that moment of distraction, something stuck him in the shoulder. He felt pain for a moment, and then an alarming numbness in his arm.

He turned his gaze from Taiyou to find out what happened. There was something sticking out of his arm. it looked like a small feathered needle. He pulled it out, but his vision started fading in and out, and he was suddenly incredibly tired.

Winters-Feather

Taiyou was impressed by her opponent. They were skilled and very well trained, perhaps with more experience than her. They were stronger, but she had the upper hand in agility, though it wasn't much of an advantage, thanks to the outfit.
Disarm him, Taiyou thought. Using her staff, she swiftly hit a few pressure points, forcing her opponent to drop his dagger. She used that opportunity to knock him backwards.

"Adrius!" she shouted when she watched the noble man fall to the ground.
Concentrate, she thought, focusing on the  magical energy inside of her. There had to be a way to push past that wall... Taiyou searched for it, searched for a crack in the spell that was blocking her, when it clicked. With a fierce cry, Taiyou sent out a l gust of wind that knocked the two other opponents over. Taiyou sighed, beads of sweat rolling down her forehead. She rushed towards Adrius' side before the others could get back up.

"Adrius!" she repeated, checking his pulse. He was okay, just asleep, though Taiyou was pretty sure his head was going to be sore for days after a fall like that.
Shioko, hurry up, she thought. She could feel the dragon rushing for the city's outer gates. She couldn't carry the nobleman out of here yet, not even with her able to use some of her magic. Gritting her teeth, Taiyou began to summon a lightning ball in her hand. She felt the rush as the energy flowed, sparks coming from her finger tips.

Alegretto

Darkness. Only darkness spread out in front of Adrius. He tried to move, to scream, to do something, but it felt as if his body was cemented in stone, and even his thoughts felt slow, sluggish. It was as if he was trapped in some terrible nightmare.

Quickly though, a light came flashing through his vision. A bolt of energy that resolved itself into what seemed to be a spark of concentrated magic power. Greedily, hungrily Adrius seized on the power and let it course through him. He could feel his consciousness lifting, surfacing from the depths.

With a start, Adrius sat up, eyes wild. Something in his neck hurt, and he grasped around the area, pulling something from his skin. He inspected the object and found that it was a dart. Memory slowly started to filter into his thoughts, and the nobleman looked around him to see what had transpired while he was out.

Winters-Feather

With a blinding flash, lightning crackled and snapped, pouring from Taiyou's hands. The attackers screamed horrible cries for a moment before falling silent.  Though the lightning tickled Taiyou's senses, she did not laugh, but grimly stopped the attack almost as soon as she started it.
She silently glared at the attackers, who were lying on the ground. One twitched. Another moaned faintly.

Taiyou sighed and turned towards Adrius. She raised her eyebrows in surprise.
"Don't sit up," she urged him as she reached for his head.
"You took a pretty nasty fall. How are you awake?" she asked before looking towards the limp figures. She frowned.
"I better check them, too," she muttered.

Alegretto

Adrius' head was still fuzzy, but he could see that their opponents were laid out flat now, and he was cognizant enough to hear Taiyou's question. "I dunno. I saw some kind of bright light, and then I felt an intense magic power and I think the energy got me up again."

The nobleman rubbed his head, suddenly feeling a bruise that must have come from that fall Taiyou had mentioned. "What happened? Did you take all these guys out?"

Winters-Feather

Taiyou blinked.
"Um."
She looked around, quickly scanning the bodies on the floor.
"Yes," Taiyou said with a sheepish grin. "I reckon they won't be up for a few hours, though I'd be more confident if I had some rope."
She held out a hand towards Adrius, her expression suddenly grave.
"Do you need help getting up?" she asked. "I should've protected you better, this shouldn't have had happened."
