You can do this, Zahara, she told herself as she sat on her new husband's bed, clammy hands folded in her lap and heart beating like a thundering stampede. The place was beautiful, littered with flower petals and sweet with burning incense, and she felt beautiful in her sheer green robes, her curly hair styled into intricate plaits, her eyes lined with kohl and lips painted. She was wearing more jewellery than she ever had in her life, and her ebony skin was dusted with gold powder to give her a healthy, almost ethereal glow.

You can do this. Just bear with it.

It had been three days of festivities leading up to her actual marriage. Three days of feasting, of merriment, of getting prettied up and socializing.

And it was during those three days that she met her husband for the second time.

The first time had been when her parents had offered her to him, a merchant prince named Mazin who already had three wives, and he had accepted the arrangement and the alliance it would give him. A week later, for a good week was needed for her family to make preparations, and the festivities leading up to the ceremony began. She would be married to a man she didn't know, and would be a stranger in a brand new household.

Obviously, Zahara found that terrifying.

The festivities flew by her in a daze, festivities she spent feeling more like a pretty doll than anything. Mazin seemed more interested in drinking than in socializing with her, though from the way he looked at her, he found her attractive at least, but if anything that only increased her anxiety. She hardly tasted the food or wine she drank, hardly spoke, and by the time the day of the ceremony came, she felt sick.

But she gave her consent to the priestess that wed them, fed him the honey and ate it, too, and kissed him when the time came and felt only knots of tension in her belly, not the pleasant butterflies she was supposed to feel. But it was done. She was married. And it was supposed to be a happy day, and everyone else looked so happy for her, but she only felt like crying.

Night fell, and Mazin's female relatives ushered Zahara away from the party, giving her a moment to say goodbye to her family before she was whisked into Mazin's home and to his bedroom, which they had decorated with flower petals and left them wine. They welcomed her to their family, gave her their blessing, and left her red-faced when his mother whispered some womanly advice into her ear. And then they were gone, and she was alone with nothing but her nerves, her ears tuned to the sounds outside the room as she prepared herself for his arrival.

Or tried to.

She closed her eyes and measured her breaths, in and out and in, trying to control her racing heart and hopefully not get sick all over the place. This was a happy day. She was being a Good Daughter and doing the right thing, pleasing her family and encouraging their mutual success and growth. This was her duty, what she was born to. It was a happy day! He was wealthy and supposed to be kind, so she would live comfortably and never want for anything. She would provide him children, tend to the home, and be taken care of.

Breathe, breathe...

She could grow to love him, as many women before her did in their marriages.

Breathe in, breathe out...

Everyone was so proud of her.

Deep breaths...

She couldn't bear to disappoint them, and how many women would kill to be in her position right now? She was foolish to have other dreams.

Oh God, are those footsteps?

She heard them, slow and slightly staggering as they grew louder and closer, and she jolted with a spike of fear that brought her to her feet, tears of panic stinging her eyes. Oh Hakeshna, no, she couldn't do this! She needed air!

And when the door opened, it opened to an empty room with an open window.

This was crazy, and Zahara knew it.

But once she'd climbed out that window, ripping the hem of her robe, and fell into a run when her bare feet hit the ground, she knew there was no going back and that she might me making the worst mistake of her life.

But she had to get out of there. She had to just go, and at the moment she couldn't think of the consequences or the future, but only of her need to run, as long and as far as she could.

Her robes tangled around her legs and made it difficult to run, and her jewellery jangled loudly, but the festivities were even louder and would go long into the night, and the music and dancing and laughter covered up the sounds of her fleeing. She kept to the alleys and kept to the dark, hardly knowing where she was going, and she didn't know how long she ran until her legs gave out and her sides felt ready to burst.

But she was no longer anywhere she recognized, and the city streets didn't look so clean as her neighborhood. Rats prowled in the dark, and vagrants snored from dark corners, and in the distance she heard the shouts and curses of a fight.

Panting heavily, Zahara hugged herself and leaned up against the wall of a building, trying to control her pounding heart and shaking legs.

What...what had she done?

And where was she now?

Spitting onto the grounded man's forehead, Jiran cleansed his bloody cheek irritated.

"Next time you want to pick up a fight, just choose more wisely who you're gonna face, idiot." Then, without caring about the hundred curses the other men were throwing against him, he picked up his waistcoat from the ground and, removing some dust from it with a distracted gesture, he went toward the first road he saw.

He hated those kind of men, always ready to pick a fight with anyone for no reason, if not because they just thought to be better than the whole world.
Putting the waistcoat on his shoulder, he kept on walking turning on purpose in the darkest alley he could find; for that night, he wasn't willing to meet anyone else.

When the man reached the middle of the narrow street, then he crouched in a shadow cone, snorting thoughtful.
He wasn't nearly as drunk as he wanted, he only had two pints of ale, yet he was enough to make his mood even sadder than usual.
He couldn't go back home in that mood, he absolutely needed another drink.

While rising up again on his feet, however, he suddenly heard a heavy paint behind the corner near him. Probably, someone had just finished a really long run, to be so breathless, and that meant he was running for a reason.
It wasn't his matter, Jiran knew it, but it could be a thief, maybe even some profitable wanted, he shouldn't have missed that chance.

Therefore, holding a hand near his concealed dagger, he jumped in the middle of the alley, almost stepping onto a running rat.
However, Jiran didn't expected at all to see that.

The young woman was leaning against the dirty wall, wearing dresses and jewels surely inappropriate for that area of the city. Panic was in her beautiful golden eyes, even before she actually noticed the man jumping in front of her, all so dirty and full of blood.

Jiran couldn't talk, as surprised as he was. What was a woman like her doing there, and with all those precious jewels? Was she running away from some criminal, or what?

Zahara didn't even have a chance to catch her breath or her bearings when a filthy, bloody man smelling strongly of booze suddenly leaped before her, knife out and towering over her.

There was a brief moment where Zahara simply froze, her breath catching, her heart leaping into her throat, her eyes going saucer wide as she stared at him in a speechless, breathless, surreal sort of terror. She jumped in surprise, nearly smacking her head on the wall behind her as she pressed back against it, and for a moment she couldn't speak, couldn't think, couldn't breathe, couldn't process anything beyond overwhelming, primal fear.

It only lasted for a second.

A second later, and all she could think was, I'm going to die! before she sucked in a shuddering breath--and let it out in a blood-curdling scream.

Jiran stayed there, immobile, staring at that frightened woman in front of her. The more he looked at her, the more he convinced himself she shouldn't be there, and he could sense something bad has happened to that poor soul.

However, before he managed to ask her what was going on, she jumped frightened and, before he could stop her, she screamed so loudly that even a deaf would have heard her.

"Wait, calm down!" he shouted at her, looking around worried; with that scream, it was only matter of time before someone could find them. And given the area of the city where they were, it was unlikely it would have been an honest man or a guard.

"I'm not going to hurt you, ok?". After speaking, he realized those were the words a brigand would have said before to stole her jewels, not the best way to tranquilize her.
"I'm not a thief, I don't have any bad intention, you don't have to be scared from me..." time was running out, they couldn't stay there talking like that, he needed to bring her away from that dark area quickly. He looked around, trying to think to some safe spot near there, but the only thing he could think about was a tavern just behind the corner. It wasn't the best place at all where a woman like that could hide herself, but he couldn't neither offer her to follow a stranger like him to his house.

First of all, however, he had to calm her down, or she wouldn't have listened at all his words.
"What the hell happened to you, and why are you running down these streets dressed like that?". At least in his mind, his voice should have been as calm and reassuring as possible, he didn't want to frighten her even more than she already was.

Rhindeer

Calm down? Calm down?! Zahara was the farthest thing from calm right then, and being told to calm down by the man that was surely going to murder her was certainly not making her calm! Tears filled her eyes, making the kohl lining them run down her cheeks in black streaks, and she sucked in another breath, ready to scream again. Surely someone had heard her! Surely someone would come!

But through the haze of panic, she heard him, and heard him proclaim he wasn't a thief, that he wouldn't hurt her. Which sounded exactly like what a thief would say! Shaking her head desperately, she pressed back into the wall as though trying to make herself invisible despite all her glittering jewels. If he wasn't a bad man, then why was he bloody and smelling of booze?

"Please don't hurt me!" she managed to whimper, voice smaller than she intended. Maybe that one scream was all she had in her; fear had stolen her breath away "Y-you can have my jewels! Just let me go, please!"

For a moment, Jiran actually thought about accepting her offering; those jewels surely would have helped him paying his debts a lot more than what his job could afford him.
But he wasn't that kind of thief, he couldn't take advantage of a beautiful, scared girl like her.

"I don't want your jewels, I just want to help you!". She was shaking heavily, she had to be terrified, and once again Jiran asked himself what the hell could have happened to that poor young woman.
But time was running out, he couldn't wait anymore.
"Listen, it's dangerous to stay here, this area of the city is full of thief and even worse. Do you have any place to stay?". He was trying to talk as slow and low as he could, trying to convince her he hadn't bad intensions, even if his appearance wasn't so trustworthy.

While waiting for an answer, Jiran pricked up his ears, worried, his right hand always near to his concealed dagger, trying to catch any sound from the dark streets all around them.

Rhindeer

That froze her dead. He didn't want her jewels?

Zahara paused, startled out of her panic, and blinked up at him, a few stray tears sliding down her cheek. "You...you really don't want them?" A real thief would have leaped at her offer, right? Maybe he wasn't eho she thought he was. But there was still the matter of him being bloody and smelling of booze.

Maybe it wasn't her jewels she wanted. Maybe he was a murderer.

...or maybe he really was just a worried passerby who had gotten into trouble just as she had.

She sucked in a trembling breath. "I...no. I don't have anywhere to go," she said at last, biting her bottom lip. "I don't really know where I am..."

And even as she said it, she didn't realize that if this man were an actual danger, she'd just given him way too much information.

Jiran froze, hearing those last words.
-Fantastic- he thought.
That lost, rich, terrified little girl in the middle of this horrible area had been really lucky to meet him, instead of all the thieves and murderers who lived there.
But her luck could fly away in a moment, if she remained there in that way.

"Listen, take off your jewels, put them in a pocket, or even in your underwear, but you need to hide them." his voice was noticeably worried, he was almost sure he had heard some steps coming in their way, and he could bet on the kind of guy they would have met.

"Here, take my waistcoat, put it on your shoulders." Even if he was focused on the streets around them, it seemed to him to notice a look of revulsion in her face, and he could easily guess the reason.
"I know it's not the best, but trust me, the less of your dress they see, the more chance we have to stay alive!".

Rhindeer

Eyes wide, Zahara nodded and scrambled to remove her jewels: her many bracelets, her necklaces, the three pairs of shining earrings, her anklets. She had no pockets in her robes, not that they would have disguised much anyway; they were sheer, with nothing beneath them, and even without the jewellery they gave away her status, for only the very rich could afford such light clothing.

While she tried to figure out where exactly she should put those jewels, the man offered her his coat--and, indeed, her eyes did widen with revulsion, her dark skin paling and nose wrinkling. That thing smelled vile! Like sweat and filth! She jerked away before she could help it, about to protest, but he seemed to anticipate her response and cut her off before she could.

...Oh. Yes. That was a good point. But wait, what?

"They?" she repeated, throwing the coat around her shoulders and doing her best to ignore the gut-churning stench. "Wait, what do you mean they? What do you mean stay alive? Is...is someone after us? Someone wants to kill us?" She winced at the way her voice squeaked on the word "kill", but she was too afraid then to be embarrassed. She hadn't realized until then that her life was in danger!

Swallowing hard, she pressed closer to him, heart pounding in her ears as she pulled the coat tight around her. "Whatdowedo?"

Obviously, she was in panic after hearing his words, and Jiran almost hated himself for having speak so frankly to her. However, he knew he had to do it, she needed to know what was probably going to face.

"Giving the area in which we are, it's really likely we're going to meet some thieves..." if not worst. But he avoided to tell her this last part, she was already frightened enough. "... but don't worry, it's going to be ok, if you do what I tell you." He wasn't sure about it, but he had to convince even himself, thieves there could easily smell the fear in man's eyes.

"Ok, listen, put this waistcoat on your shoulder and..." looking around the streets, he found some sand still wet from what he hoped uselessly to be just rain and, without thinking too much, he threw it onto the lower part of her dress, ignoring what reaction it could cause on her.

The steps were getting closer, Jiran was finally sure someone was going toward them, and he surely didn't want to just hope they were just some good guys.
"Listen, now you're going to lean on me and pretend to be drunk, ok?". Checking his dagger hidden in his pants, Jiran got closer to the scared woman, waiting for a signal of approval.

Rhindeer

The sand certainly didn't smell like rain, and Zahara cringed and shuddered as it splattered all over her dress, a dress worth more than what a family in these parts made in a year. But she swallowed down her yelp of protest, and fear certainly helped keep her quiet. Hakeshna, maybe it would have been better, in the end, for her to have stayed in that room, married to Mazin.

At least then she would still be alive!

With a terrified look his way, for now she too could hear the approaching footsteps, Zahara nodded and quickly leaned against him. She had no idea how to act drunk; she'd never been drunk before in her life, though she was no stranger to alcohol, as she drank it with meals. But never to the point of inebriation. But she had seen her uncle drunk on more than one occasion, and so she tried to channel that, swaying against the man and letting her head loll against him, as though he were the only thing keeping  her upright.

"Like this?" she whispered.

"Perfect" he whispered back to the girl, as she laid on his shoulder.
Actually, however, it wasn't perfect at all, besides all his attempts to ruin her dress, it still seemed too much valuable for that area of the city. At least, they did smell like two drunks now, and now that he got closer to the girl, he finally had the proof what made the sand wet wasn't just water.

Ignoring that pungent smell, he tried to understand from where the steps were coming. They were really close, they could jump on the streets any instant, it was useless to try to avoid them.
Therefore, tightening his arm around the girl's shoulders, he started walking as the drunk he usually was, but always keeping his right hand ready to catch his dagger.

"Do everything I tell you, ok?". Then, without waiting for her to answer, he started walking toward where the steps were coming, twisting his face as if he had drunk way more ales than he actually did.

As he expected, it didn't take too long before two men appeared from the dark streets near them, and luckily for them, they seemed to be too drunk even to walk without stumbling every two steps.
Jiran sighed in relief, even if they tried to rob them, it would have been easy for him to defeat them.

Luckily, the two men seemed not to care at all about the strange duo, but they kept on walking and laughing on their own, launching just a quick sight toward them.
Jiran was relieved, the girl seemed to act properly her role, and the drunk guys were going to pass them; if nothing happened, they would have been safe.
