Physical Description

Alyx wears a large set of full-moon spectacles which obscure a great deal of her face— often fogged or smudged by either her work or her generally flustered nature in the presence of others, it's hard to tell if she can actually see out of them. The rest of her face, for the most part, is covered by her long, voluminous curly, and often-times unkempt raven-black hair. She rarely cuts it— and while it's not dirty (she washes it daily) between her guild work and, honestly, just a general lack of self-esteem, Alyx often does little to nothing with it, letting it fall where it falls most days. The bulk of it atop her head is typically kept from view by a very large, very old, and very crooked wizard's hat that she found a dog chewing on, and claimed for herself. She... never washed it, but Rous, her pet rat, seems to enjoy it up there so she typically keeps it on. She has a few freckles that dot her pale, almost snow white skin, and a beauty mole (she affectionately calls her "ugly mole") just below the corner of her left eye.

Regular exercise keeps Alyx in average shape— she doesn't have particularly toned abs, visible muscular striation or highly defined body lines. Even if she did, her choice of attire lends itself to hiding any particularly notable detail about her physique. Alyx prefers loose-fitting, high-cut, long-sleeved blouses and overcoats (her favourite colour being green, she often wears some combination of black and green in her dress choice), partnered with equally comfortable pantaloons which leave next-to-everything to the imagination. As her role as an adventurer tends to take her across towns as needed, her style of footwear typically consists of either a function-over-fashion pair of lodge boots, or simple, very low-heel leather shoe for her far more casual, less walking-attributed excursions. Alyx wears a thin, silver chain and round, silver locket around her neck, inside of which sits a magicked jewel, a memento from her parents. Around her waist, she wears a blackened leather utility belt with pouches designed for carrying many of her daily work needs, from ink to quills to magnifying glass to scrolls.

Personality There are positives and not-so-positives to Alyx that one should be very aware of when dealing with her. On the positive side, Alyx is many things, but a coward is not one of them. Always the opportunist, she has never been hesitant to take on a new opportunity or put her life on the line, should such situations arise. She is not easily deterred by threats and does not allow the inhibitions of others to stand in the way of her progress. She combines her book smarts with a genuine desire to know more about just about everything there is to know in order to get to the bottom of any mystery that rears its head at her. She's always asking questions, deep-diving issues, and seeking the truth behind just about everything she's involved in.

Being a jerk is overrated. Alyx prefers to make more allies than enemies, and to that end, she has a very kind, albeit somewhat chaotic personality to assist in that endeavour. She's never afraid to lend a helping hand, listen to someone's problems, or just be in your corner when you need someone's shoulder to cry on. She prides herself on being a very flexible and creative individual, through her alchemical research to her out-of-the-box problem solving mentality. She believes everything has an answer, no matter how crazy that answer may or may not be, and as a result, she's usually never one to sulk or mope if she can't figure something out. As they say, if you run into a wall, you just need to blow the wall up, right?

On the... not-so-positive side of things, Alyx struggles with the concept of morals... or rather, how loose hers are. She's a generally good person, but her willingness to do whatever it takes to do whatever she wants tends to cause her to make rather questionable decisions that most... Well, 'normal' folk don't agree. Let's just say that her good friends (this is hypothetical; She doesn't have any friends) know that it's not being a bad friend to keep her at a safe distance when necessary. Also-- remember the whole 'kind, yet somewhat chaotic' thing from earlier? That's not a joke. Alyx doesn't do well in the commonplace when it's too quiet; Be it the mischievous spirit of fun within her or just some inherent disdain of silence, she is prone to causing trouble. Loud trouble. Sometimes even very dangerous, life-threatening trouble.

Most troubling, however, is that at her worst, Alyx is a young lady with a very unpalatable God complex. She believes that humanity-- that is, all creatures capable of at least higher-level mathematics, were put on the earth to shape it to their will, and to not only uncover its deepest secrets, but master them. To that end, all of her positive and negative traits play into one very important thing to know about her, summed up, quite simply, by her most common state of mind: If Alyx thinks it's possible, she'll try to do it. If she doesn't think it's possible, she'll try to do it.

Magic/Abilities

Alyx is a mage! She's capable of casting all sorts of mortal magical spells, and due to her solid foundational understanding of magical theory, she can even spellcraft! This usually ends up being a bigger problem than a boon, though, as she doesn't understand the concept of "Calling meteors down from the sky isn't an actual possible spell". Hasn't stopped her from trying though! Not even in the middle of cities!

Relationships

History

Alyx was born literally inside of the mage's academy in Darken Vei. Her father was a guard of the academy, and her mother was one of its least-loved wizards. The two had absolutely no reason to fall in love, and technically didn't; Alynn lured Garrot, a married man, into an affair, and sired a kid from him. This eventually made it back to his own family, and naturally destroyed his marriage, and eventually led to a very depressed Garrot walking away from his former life and becoming a sellsword, moving to Thanatos to live out the remainder of his days.

Alynn was an ambitious and outcast wizard with dreams of grandeur far beyond any that a mortal should desire. She believed that magic was given to man as a tool to lead him to rule over all other lesser races, and her thesis and ideas for revolutionising the mages' academies around the world were consistently thrown out or ridiculed. One day, when Alyx was 5, Alynn left Lumber Town after an incident between herself and one of Garrot's other children resulted in the child going missing. Last sightings of her mentioned her vanishing into the forests south of Ravensway, never seen or heard from again.

Alyx inherited much of her parent's misfortune, outcast among her peers at the academy, yet allowed to study there as Alynn had already filed for her acceptance into it. Garrot's ex-wife, bless her heart, took some pity on the girl and let her use the Mal Tannis name to avoid further connection with her mother, but grudges ran deep, and neither she, nor her family had the strength of character to let her stay with them. Alyx lived alone in a small cupboard of a dorm within the academy, as no one wanted to associate with the daughter of Alynn Marluxe, regardless of what last name she took.

Seeing as she had no other source of comfort, Alyx buried herself into her studies from a young age and rarely came up from air. She 'adopted' a small indoor mouse that she affectionately named 'Rous', and would share the little food she got from the academy halls with it. One day, Rous was attacked, killed, and mostly eaten by another rat of a much larger size. That rat became her new Rous. She continued to cycle through them throughout the years. It kept life interesting.

As early as she could, Alyx doubled her studies not only in magical theory but also into alchemy in depth. It was a costly subject, but Alyx found individuals amiable enough within or without the academy walls who were willing to 'donate' odds and ends to her, sometimes in exchange for favours or whatever valuables she may have had. Alongside what the academy provided her when she began taking courses in alchemy, she began brewing her first potions, which were mostly failures. Rous would typically be her test subject for said potions. They usually didn't like that very much, but it was okay; There were plenty of rats within the academy.

By the time Alyx was deemed proficient enough to leave the mage's academy, she was well enough on her way as a proficient spellcaster, and while she was encouraged to sign up with the adventurer's guild by one of the few instructors who'd taken a liking to her (she did), she also began procuring and selling potions and magical items in earnest, an attempt to further fund her alchemical and magical research while also allowing her to not have to sleep in alleyways. Thus far, she's kept up with her alchemical supply.

She's still working on getting out of the alleyways.
