Home was a dangerous place to be. Too many temptations, too many lies, too many stakes. In fact, had she not returned, some might have actually believed her dead, but it seemed a certain one night rendez-vous with the wrong man doubled the worth on her head.

"Dead or Alive," she mused, staring at her wanted poster. Her face scrunched as she studied it. "They can never get my nose right."  A finger tapped over the amount, now hastily painted over in red reading, 'A Million Silvers'. "I guess that amount in gold didn't sound as appetizing."
Her grin was meek, but the fire was still in her eyes. She moved and ripped the poster down, but she didn't shred it or crumple it up to throw into a sewer grate. No, she folded it in half and pocketed it. It was her lover's job, anyway, to remove the posters. Besides, she figured he'd get a kick out of how much his woman was now worth.

Adjusting the hood of her cloak, she looked back over her shoulder before continuing on her way. She had a lot to do before nightfall, and the skies threatened with rain.

There was a lot of heresay and rumors she wanted to get the low down of, plus she now had a very real threat on her lover's life that forced her into these less pleasing tasks. But she wore the danger with pride, and would not apologize for anything she had done. Not now, not ever.

Even still, it was a bit petty for her to steal from a child, of all things, but apparently this kids journal held information about someone else that could be used against another, and laundered for another debt....
The jist of the gig was that she had no choice, and so to the Cullener's manor she walked.

By the time she was standing outside the orange stone building, it had began to rain. Lightly enough that one wouldn't really need a hood, but by now, she at least would look less conspicuous with her's up. It seemed the family wasn't home... they didn't need to be. The child's personal diary was all she needed, and perhaps a bargaining chip or two against the family as well. One could never be too safe when guarding their own ass; and apparently, Jinai was now responsible for a lot of asses.

O'hann pressed his fingers against the bridge of his nose and blinked three times before turning back to face the elderly woman whose door he had knocked upon. "You're sure there's nothing more you can tell me, ma'am? Again I'm terribly sorry for the intrusion, but..." The old woman, ReneƩ, smiled back at O'hann and shook her head "sorry lad, tis all I can offer, but the weather looks like it's about turn sour. You sure you wouldn't like to stay for one more cup of tea?" That warmed him a little, and he politely shook his hand in refusal "sorry again ma'am, but my work is never done, and it's quite important, but I plan to take you up on that offer the next time I'm in the capital." She nodded and gave him a kiss on the cheek before shutting her door, leaving O'hann in the soft drizzle that had begun to come down.

He took off his hat and slicked back his hair, feeling a few drops before returning it to its place. It had been a long while since he last had a mission that required him to head to the capital, but here he was. On the hunt for a notorious rebel whose bounty was getting a little too high for the state's comfort.

According to the reports she was last spotted here amidst the commoners, but why return to the capital? It was unsure, but this was the best chance for the church to plant another stake down into the mage rebellion, and with his resolve affirmed he stepped out into the rain, and made his way down the cobblestone path.

Now with the right tactics, and palms greased he was sure he could develop a lead, but that takes time and he didn't know how long he had before she would move on. It was dangerous here for any rebel which means that he had to act fast, and he happened to know how to tap a resource few others of his ilk dare ever attempt to approach: the children. They play all over the city, and nobody ever suspects them, so people tend to drop their guard, or let their identities slip.

Playing in puddles along the road was a group of four dirty kids who reveled in their mud, but froze upon the approach of the inquisitor in his grim garb "pardon, youngins' I don't mean to bother you in your important business, but I was wondering if you lot would like to do something really important to help me solve an important case?" Their apprehension almost melted like butter at that, and their eyes went as they took a step toward O'hann who had knelt to their level. "I'm looking for a lady whose been very bad, and has hurt a lot of people." They all gasped at that, and O'hann nodded in assurance as he described Jinai's appearance to the children. A small girl with frizzy hair stepped forth "yeah...I saw a lady like that I think, but it was hard to tell. It was on my way over here..."

He perked up for a moment "this is very important miss..." She puffed out her chest "Juni!" He grinned back at her "Miss Juni, which way did you come from? Can you remember which way she was heading? Anything helps." The little girl briefly described a mess of streets, and O'hann whipped out his notebook to try and copy it all down. He then rose to his feet and bowed deeply to the young girl "thank you Miss Juni, you've done a great service to God, and one of his agents this day." The other children stared in awe at they're friend, but O'hann was already on the move trying his best to make sense of a child's directions, and noticed that he was fast coming upon a wealthier neighborhood. What could this heretic possibly want in this part of town...?

He made sure to talk to as many people along the way as he could to try and keep the trail warm. In this part of town they would talk, being inquisitor has some privileges. People try and stay on your good side, but the trail stopped on a street with a large orange manor at the end...

visualspice

Most homes of some wealth had some means to protect itself from intruder's. It seemed this home was no exception, because the moment Jinai got a little too close, their Connlaothian tracker, a big, shaggy beast with brown eyes, came rushing out of it's backyard coop and was barking up a storm. So much for being silent. Cringing, she looked around to see if anyone else was around, but the one couple that had been out for a stroll had already turned down another street and disappeared from sight.

It was still too light for her to simply sneak around back, or even up the side of the building which seemed to be her only option visible at this point. But the damn tracker was noisy, so she turned from the place and began to head down another street. She'd have to bide her time before attempting to get in there- maybe come up with a way to distract the dog while she slipped inside.

O'hann's pace picked up as he made his way down the street looking, praying, for some form of suspicious activity. That's when he heard it go; a dog barking down behind the manor. It was probably nothing, maybe a squirrel in the yard, but if it wasn't...?

His pace quickened, and brought him to the front of the estate. The dog had turned it's attention from whatever had first grabbed it and was now berating him. He reached into his pouch and pulled out some bread, tearing off a piece and tossing it at the shaggy monster "easy boy, I'm just passin through." He drew his gaze to the direction that the animal initially faced and his one eye narrowed down as he stared down the back of a head of long blonde hair.

He tucked his hands in his pockets and said a goodbye to the large dog, and headed down the street, and began to tail whoever this stranger was. It's smart to trust your instincts with God on your side.

It was too windy for her hood to remain up, so she went for a time without it. Of course, she had no idea she was being tailed. Her walk was leisurely as she went on to study the great houses in this area and wondered just how many of these sorts did Jude entertain?

She knew he did quite well for himself, and had contacts throughout this city, even the next. It was strange to think they both lived other lives, and probably had passed one another in the streets in the past.

Or perhaps not. Before she had met Jude Armand, she was always face first in her drugs. His kind, or any good kind of people wouldn't bother two seconds with her and she paused a moment to contemplate just how she found herself so deeply rooted in this war.

Rolling his tongue around his mouth, O'hann's eye flashed as he caught a glimpse of the face of his suspect. His heart raced in his chest. The reports didn't lie, she was a beauty. Alas his job didn't allow him to afford such distractions. He took a breath breath and steeled his heart, and quickened his steps.

He tried to keep his footfalls soft to not alarm his quarry, and he reached his arm out to tap on her shoulder, being quick to put a small smile on. Let's guage the reaction "'scuse me, miss? I've seem to have become lost wandering the streets, it's been years since I've been to the capital, and I must say I'm a little embarrassed."

He made sure his badge of office was exposed, not obviously presented, but enough that anyone looking would notice. In the streets he had to maintain the farce of peace. He couldn't let this heretic walk about as she pleased and causing trouble.

visualspice

When she turned to the man, who she heard coming but felt no threat from (considering if you appeared threatened, naturally, you were a threat). It was probably why it was easy for her to slip around. She studied the man, but his badge was like a beacon.

"Yet your work might dictate other wise." Coolly she turned towards the man and eyed him. He had no familiar face, as far as she was concerned, and she knew most of the faces to avoid.

"Green to the city and your work?" she inquired, trying to sound as pleasant as she could, but if anything, it just seemed like this cat were feigning a purr, while keeping coyly modest.

He felt a grin slither to his lips like a snake, this was his rush. Catching a heretic and then letting them think they have a shot. He basked in their hubris as he plotted their downfall. Easy now though old boy, the show must go on. The star actress is playing her role dangerously well.

"Yes it's been a few years since I've been deployed within the capital. Normally I work out of town, but there's a really important case they absolutely needed more hands on. A dangerous woman is prowling the streets they say. We can never be too careful you know. Besides, 'God loves the working man' as they say, and contrary to appearances I'm very good at my work. I assure you're city couldn't be in safer hands than my own save for the Lord's himself."

He reached his hand out to her "O'hann. O'hann Mardaux, at your service" he removed his hat to take a small bow "and I'd be ever so grateful if you could walk me to the nearest established place of worship I'd be ever so grateful. Miss..." He paused for a moment and chuckled "I'm sorry I don't believe I caught your name?"

visualspice

Oh boy. She had run into far too many men like this one, eager to make a mark and some quick change. She felt her own grin grow slow.

"Perhaps you should have asked my name before that offer. A whore is no proper escort to the church."

His face went cold for a moment, but he regained his composure, and his voice softened for a moment as he stared upon his mark with sympathy. If he could he would save the heretic, not from her own execution for that is what the church and God have asked of him, but save her soul.

"You know all are welcome in the house of God. His justice is swift and focused, but it is fair and unbiased to those who would ask it of him. It's not too late to save yourself, Jinai" he let that last sentence hang for a moment, he touched the well of divine energy within him to spring some defense as quick as he could should it come to that, but the reports didn't say anything about Miss Rinstgate being a fool. Despite the lack of activity in the streets it was still daytime, and he was still an officer.

"You've been fighting for a long time, it doesn't take two eyes to see that. God doesn't hate warriors." He reached his hand out once more, "there's no shame in taking a well deserved rest."

visualspice

She pursed her lips, staring the man over in thought. Her eyes shined at him, but it could be mockery more than out of praise.

"That's an interesting accusation. You really must be green." And without so much as another word, she turned from him to continue her stroll. If the fact she was so close to the enemy was bothering her, or made her fear, she didn't show it. Inwardly, however, she was desperately seeking a way out.

Watching her turn his back on him, turned his stomach. How could someone be so impudent as to turn away the mercy that an agent of God would offer. He took a breath, and caressed his holy book that hung from his belt. Feeling the light within him warmed him once more.

"To go against the orders of an inquisitor is blasphemy, Rinstgate. Even if you thought I was going to let you walk away, I'm not by the way, more would come for you. Despite your skill and guile, we at the church are much more resourceful than any city official. Don't make this any harder than it has to be. You don't possess the taint of magic, there might even be a way out of this for you."

He reached down and let his fingers tickle the hilt of his firearm, "but that's only if you cooperate. Wouldn't you like a way out of this?" He didn't want it to come to blows, talking is best, and she seemed like a talker, and that's when it struck him...

"If you'd like I can give you time. Let you tie up your loose ends, but I'll be accompanying you. You'll be able to move more freely if people think you're already detained." This was it, if he could start on good feet, the more they would be able to get out of her during an interrogation, and he could learn about any potential heretic activities from within. Dangerous, but his duty was to rout the evil of his great country. By any means necessary

visualspice

She paused at his words, turning around to study him where he stood.
"Blasphemy only exists to those believe it. Besides, if you wanted an easy task you shouldn't have come alone." Sighing she turned away from him again and muttered, "He really is new."
Either that, or he was just stupid. She had seen religious figures before so ignorant they walked in on their own death. For the moment, she felt no threat from him. Besides, if he had wanted her dead, she knew he was packing iron. She'd have a hole in her by now.

He sneered, this heretical cur dare spit upon his kindness?! The nerve of her would bring his blood to boil "and I can assure you that all judge, jury, and executioner are believers."

He took a deep breath, he had made the mistake of letting his authority escape him. He was a man of stature, and he had to admit he had never encountered such arrogance in the face of one of Connlaoth's holy inquisitors. He didn't enjoy the fear that came with the job, but lord knows he must instill it when needed.

He scanned her up and down for weaponry, and from behind it would be simple to draw and lay her low, but the orders were to return the heretic alive. "Miss Rinstgate, I regret to inform you by the power vested in me by his holy voice, I am placing you under arrest." He felt the soft rain patter on his hat and let the seconds tick "don't do anything that could make this worse for you. You're already scaring you're loved ones enough." This was it, the standoff. The next few moments could go one of two ways, but history told him that one was more obvious than the other please don't make this into an ordeal. The capital makes my skin crawl, and I just wanna go home..."

visualspice

She was still calm as a cucumber by his threats, and simply gave him a fake smile at his demands.

"Scaring my loved ones? Ha! Too bad your sort just pretend everybody in Connlaoth is the same. And if you want to arrest me, you just might have to shoot me." She was hoping by his approach at this he wasn't planning on hurting her at all. But she'd been shot before. It hurt like hell.

Thankfully, they had some distance between them, but not much. She was still taking a few steps away from him, cautious and slow. They were in a nicer neighborhood in Connlaoth. Most of this area was saved by the savagery of war. She could only hope this man wasn't green enough to realize how unhappy the wealthier pawns in Connlaoth would be if they stained their streets with blood, or heaven for bid, cause a raucous.

His frustration was coming to a boil, and his hand unclasped the restraint that kept his flintlock tightly in it's holster "my kind do what's right by to protect the people, from your kind." He eyed her, and took a step forward. "Don't do anything stupid, I've tried to keep things civil, but you're clearly blinded by your own arrogance."

He clasped the handle, and eyed his surroundings. The people were scared, and it was his duty to protect them, and so he drew his firearm, and pointed it at her. The barrel within emitted a soft white glow from where he channeled his miraculous power to fire upon the unjust. "Honestly, I'm baffled. Tell me, what do you think is worth more..." His right hand reached into a back pocket "just keep your eye on the gun..." He chuckled "Making some noise in the neighborhood, or the arrest of a dangerous fugitive?"

Inside a belt pouch he fondled through some vials, and traced his thumb around markings on the cork looking for...And there it was! He rolled the adhesive agent around his hand, this should keep her still over and more susceptible to negotiation...

"And one more thing...THINK FAST!" His hand whipped from his back and tossed the vial in front of where he pointed his gun, and let the weapon crack out in a flash of light as the silver ball crashed into the vial shattering it and sending a small wave of sticky goo to wrap around Ms. Rinstgate checkmate.

To say she expected such a trick would be a lie. No, she expected this trick from a person more like herself to concoct than some stuffy holy man ward from the church. So when the gun went off, she was stock still, presuming she'd been shot, when there was a sudden rush of sticky stuff flung at her form.

And there she stood, wide eyed and uncertain at just what had happened. Either this was some sort of practical joke that was well escalated, well played; or the man put some sort of serious, semen like substance all over her body because he was crazy. She certainly felt like a well used whore, body so tight it hurt. But somehow she wasn't shot, just shocked. And her jade green eyes remained wide and she, unmoving- whether it be against her will or not, not even she knew, because all she could do in the moment was stare at the smug bastard before her.

O'hann took the steps to close the gap between him and his criminal target, crunching along some small pieces of shattered glass that contained his binding agent. He twirled his gun, and slotted it back into its holster, and reached his arm out to pluck the bullet he fired where it had into the gooey mass on Jinai's shoulder before promptly dropping it back into his ammo pouch "sorry, silver is expensive, and I'm a penny pincher."

He popped a hand on his hip, and wiped his nose with the other "ya know I'm honestly pretty glad that worked. I'm not a big fan of violence." He took a moment to examine her and then firmly nodded. Kneeling down he hoisted her over his shoulder, and spun around to start walking towards the nearest place of worship, but he noticed people started peeking in from their homes. What could he expect, with the sound of gunfire he was bound to attract some attention. So he patted down his pocket and produced his badge with a smile, and made on his way.

Occasionally he readjusted his load, but he didn't break stride "don't worry miss, contrary to popular belief the church doesn't exactly operate in the same confines of Connlaoth law. Which means if you cooperate openly, we're not really beholden to turn you in. Providin' you cooperate that is, and don't worry about the goop. The agent shouldn't harden up enough in about 10 minutes or so where it'll just start flaking off on its own. It's gonna stink like the stables for a little though. Apologies for that one."

At first, Jinai found it hard to speak, but once she was able to over come some lethargy in her throat area, she groaned out a, "If you were looking for a wife, you should have looked elsewhere. And what would I do, or even care to consider, at the church? Ansgar can fuck his own balls, and you along with him and while you're at it, you can take these stunning stink and shove it up your ass."

He sighed exasperated "yes the reports mentioned how...'ladylike' your demeanor is, and before you form some cutting remark on how you don't care for manners please acknowledge your situation, as you'd say," he gave her a small slap on the rump,"your ass is grass."

After making his way through the winding streets, he eventually arrived at the front of a local church where the local preacher, Father Syllus awaited. "Consider yourself lucky, if another inquisitor had been assigned your case you wouldn't be handled with as much...tenderness." Opening the heavy door, O'hann gestured to a young girl lighting incense to return with the Father. He then took a seat on one of the pews, and placed his captive down. The adhesive had flaked off more than a fair deal by now, and she'd be free. So while waiting for his witness he gave her a pat down "any hidden weapons, or sharp objects I should know about before we put the manacles on?"
