Riyarin just wanted to go home.

Go home--and never see another human again.

But it had been a long time since she had been home and safe in her jungle--and it was looking less and less likely that she would ever return.

Things had been rough from the moment she had been dragged from it, and while there had been bright spots amongst the darkness, in the end that light only made the shadows longer. For one shining moment she had believed, really believed, that she had a shot at going home. That she had made a friend, that things could get better even if they would never be the same, and that she would see her family again.

It didn't last.

Nature was unpredictable, and humans were no less.

And so she had found herself on a ship sailing under unfamiliar constellations until, finally, they made port somewhere even more alien than the last. She had been in her true form when she had been captured and chained, and with the enchantments fused into the iron, she had not been able to shift or summon her fire. If only she could--she might have been just small enough to slip the chains and...

And...well...she would have been small enough to slip the chains. Her plans had never gotten farther than that because she was, after all, on a ship in the middle of the ocean. But if she was patient and waited until this very moment, as she was being dragged off the ship and down the gangplank, she may have been able to make a run for it.

In the meantime, all she could do was make it difficult.

Two crew members tugged her along by her chains while she tossed her head and snorted sharply, her flared nostrils expelling tendrils of smoke. She dug her hooves into the wood, long tail lashing, and refused to budge. Or tried. A third one, the one she had come to recognize as their leader, gave her flank a sharp slap to get her moving, like she was a horse, and Riyarin pinned her ears back in indignation. The nerve! Letting out a whinnying snarl, she wound her hind leg up and aimed a sharp kick at him with a cloven hoof, and he didn't even bother to try to dodge.

Her chains rattled, her leg stopping short, and she growled in frustration.

Her legs had been chained together to prevent this exact thing. There was just enough slack to allow her to walk.

"What a beast," the merchant said with admiration, scratching his beard as he looked her over. She bared her sharp teeth at him, daring him to come within biting distance. "Still haven't the slightest idea what it is, but if there's ever a market for oddities, this is the place."

Oddities! Riyarin glared at the merchant as the crew members pulled her along, unable to resist as the chains bit into her neck. They had no idea what she was even worth! She was just an oddity! She staggered after them, but she made them work for each foot they gained, stamping her hooves and pulling against them. She was strong, and they would have been no match for her...had she not been hobbled like this.

And that was how she wound up in the town marketplace, put up for auction like livestock. Like a horse. A strange horse that was more deer, and kind of dragon, with scales and antlers and a fiery mane that brushed the ground.

She could not believe this. Her people had always claimed luck ran in their blood.

Riyarin was beginning to doubt that.

Malila had just stepped on the dock after an easy job of filling a merchants sails with wind. Her purse was decently heavy now, and she could afford to leave leisurely for a while. It wasn't her biggest payday, but it was honest work after all.  Merchants didn't pay as well as pirates, but she could sleep without fear that she'd wake to some stranger standing over her. That pirate captain had promised none of his crew would lay a hand on her, but that protection apparently hadn't extended to him. After collapsing his lungs, blasting him out the side of the ship, and poking several holes in the hull she'd had to fly herself to the coast. So the pay may not have been as high, but she didn't mind making it back to land without having to fly. Flying wasn't too hard, but maintaining the magic for that long was exhausting. She'd even had to swim at the end. Never again.
So she made her way to market. She bought a large grilled fish on a stick from a street vendor, and pulled a bottle of her favorite wine from her pack. Who knew magic bags were so common these days. Not so hard to make, said the merchant wizard in Arca. Well she had paid for it honestly, nobody steals in Wolf territory, and was never happier with a purchase. Well except maybe all the whoring and drinking. She was definitely happy with those purchases. As she spit bones from the fish in the street, and drank from her open bottle, she browsed the shiny bits. She liked shiny bits. She nicked a couple as she went along. That made her feel nice after such boring work. She even took out her sexual frustrations on the busty first mate of that merchant vessel and it still wasn't as satisfying as a successful sleight of hand to get herself a couple new rings.
There wasn't much to be had in this minor port town. It was no Cerenis. It was about time she hit the road, find herself some real action. Just one more pass through before heading out, and that's when she saw it. A real life kirin. The thanati kind. Good luck. She had heard that the kirin themselves had terrible luck, but they brought good luck to those around them. She wasn't sure how true that was, but it was definitely worth finding out. So she did what any kind soul might do, she went to see how the auction was going.

Riyarin's captors had brought her to a busy market crowded with people, many of whom soon surrounded them to gawk and talk.

She didn't have the slightest idea what was happening. Well, that wasn't true—she had an idea: the people who had caught her were bargaining with some other people to give her away. She didn't understand the details of it; they kept saying numbers, and her captors seemed displeased by what they heard. She wasn't really sure what the numbers had to do with anything, but she did know she did not like the bits of conversation she could understand.

"That seems an awfully high starting bid for some weird, scaly deer," one man was saying, looking her over skeptically, while she tossed her head and let out a sharp snort. Deer?! "So, what is it?"

"An exotic beast our captain captured in Thanatos. You won't find anything like it on the mainland!"

"Yeah, but what's it do?" the main said with a frown, poking at her scaled haunch. Riyarin danced away from him, wishing she could kick him, too. "Looks too small to ride." Ride?! "So what's its use?"

"Why, to have a piece of Thanatos no one else has claimed! An exotic addition to any personal menagerie. Look at it, part dragon for sure, with--"

"What's it taste like?" a bedraggled woman missing several teeth chipped in. "Like goat? Or venison?"

What?! Riyarin stiffened, eyes going wide, and she stomped her front hooves and pulled on her chains, letting out a distressed little whinny.

There was no way. These people were going to eat her?! Her captors let out sounds of surprise and tightened their grips on the chains to bring her back under control, and she was too tired to keep it up for long. Panting, sides heaving and slick with sweat, she took deep breaths and tried to calm.

She would need her strength for later.

Malila was intrigued by how these fools were able to catch the creature. Kirin had magic, and they could take on a humanoid form. Plus they were rare. How was it that foreigners had gotten their hands on one. She heard the folk talking about how much they estimated it was worth, and she knew they truly were idiots. She tossed aside the remains of her fish, slid the re-corked bottle into her bag, and turned on the grift.
"You fools," she exclaimed, as she approached through the people. The volume and purposeful movement of the tall Thanati woman parted the crowd before her. "You have no idea what you have there. Of what you've done." She painted worry and fear across her face. "That is a sacred beast of the Thanati people. To harm it is to curse your bloodline. Just by bringing it here you may have sentenced us all to death. We must return it at once," she gesticulated at the Kirin, and back toward the docks. "Their brethren will come searching, and they will bring a plague of death. If not for the iron keeping this ones powers in check it would be expelling it's noxious flesh melting breath upon us."

Just when matters we're starting to seem dire, a powerful voice cut through the chatter and haggling. A startled hush fell over the crowd, and Riyarin's eyes widened when they landed on the tall woman currently commanding the crowds

A Thanati woman.

Growing up, her grandmother, Makoro, had always warned her of humans—and in her limited experience thus far, those warnings had all been for a good reason. Yet these people, though dangerous, were ignorant, and that ignorance might play into her favor at some point. But a Thanati who knew who she was? That could be even worse. Makoro had been used by the Thanati, after all.

The woman was saying some odd things, though. Cursed bloodlines? Death sentences? What? Riyarin snorted, utterly perplexed; seemed she knew more about her kind, but not by much. She watched the woman warily as the crowd gasped and stared at her with fresh eyes, and felt a knot of anxiety grow in her belly as she worried that her foolish words might worsen her situation, but then woman said the most magical words she had heard in the last few months:

We must return it at once.

Yes! Yes, yes please! Riyarin perked up, ears raised. Back to Thanatos! That was all she wanted, to just go home even if it meant being alone again. That was okay! She would never, ever complain about it again, she promised!

She shifted anxiously, trying desperately to make eye contact with this unexpected ally, even as said ally continued to spew nonsense.

...Noxious...flesh-melting...breath...?

Her nose wrinkled. Disgusting! But even as she stared incredulously at the woman, those words seemed to be having an effect.

The men holding her exchanged nervous glances. One of them shoved his chains at his partner. "Naw, man, I don't deal with cursed shit."

"You think I do?!" his partner snapped, and tried to hand his chain back to him. "You can't just bail! Boss gave us a job, we gotta sell this shit."

"You heard her, Jack! The thing's cursed. Like anyone's gonna buy it now!"

"You believe that horseshit?"

"Doesn't matter what I think. Look!"

Nervous whispering had fallen over the crowd, the once curious onlookers now giving the kirin, her handlers, and the strange Thanati a wide berth. One person shouted that they should send the creature back, and another chimed in with agreement. "Get it outta here!"

The man called Jack cursed under his breath, face screwed up into a conflicted expression. "Boss'll kill us if we go back with no creature and no money. Hey! You!"

He turned on the woman, a snarl in his words. "You really fucked us over here. You want it? How much you gonna give us to save the world or whatever?"

Malila let out a gasp, and turned to the closest of the onlookers. "Can you believe these men," she painted her face with shock and disgust. "They want me to buy a cursed beast from them." She knew this would come, had planned for it, already she was pulling in the air that was around the fish barrels and meat carts. There was an apothecary nearby that she was pulling air from as well. Using her elemental control over air to mix them together, she was bringing a strange pungent smell that was reminiscent of decay. She didn't even have to point out the smell to the crowd, they had started to smell it themselves. The way she had directed the creeping air it spread out from the Kirin.
"Do you smell that," someone asked. Then there was a gasp. "It's the breath," another person cried. People were starting to panic, those closest to the action backing up jostling those behind them, spreading the fear. Malila grasped ahold of it and directed it at the men. She pointed her finger at them and exclaimed, "You've doomed us!"
She then dropped to her knees placing her hands on the ground and bowing to place her forehead on the ground as well. "Oh Noble Kirin! Please forgive them! They know not what they've done! Perhaps they will return you home! I beg you not to harm the people here, they are innocent." She pushed the rancid air away from the crowd, bringing in a clear fresh ocean breeze. The crowd murmured and then a woman cheered. "Thank you Noble Kirin," the woman said and the crowd soon was joining in. But Malila was not done. The crowd had performed its job so well, but she doubted the men would hand over the kirin very easily. So as she lifted her head and smiled beatifically at the kirin, she pulled a little at the air around the men, thinning it, making it harder to breathe. Driving them toward light headedness.

W-what in the...?!

The air was disgusting, filling Riyarin's sensitive nostrils with the choking smell of death and rot. She recoiled as much as the chains would let her, her eyes watering as she gagged and coughed—which probably only helped the woman's charade, adding to the illusion that she was spewing out miasma.

It was awful—and to be slandered like that! And everyone believed her! Another time and Riyarin would have been horrified—she didn't stink! She wasn't some scary beast! She didn't want to hurt anyone! But the woman kept mentioning returning her home, and she knew that she was kirin. Was she...was she really saving her?

As much as she hated the lies, hope swelled in her heart for the first time in weeks. Though it was quickly replaced by a startled jolt when the woman prostrated herself before her. Riyarin danced nervously, chains rattling as she stared at the woman in alarm and then swept a look at all the terrified people. This...this wasn't how she wanted to be viewed, she wasn't a monster, and gods above this was so awkward. Had she been in human form, she would have been burning like fire from sheer mortification. But...

But if it would get them all to leave her alone...

It was a surreal experience, doing nothing while an entire crowd thought she was wielding life and death before them.

And all the while the woman smiled at her, looking in that moment like the most beautiful creature she had ever seen.

Cheers rang out, but not from everyone. Her captors looked dazed, almost drunk. The man called Jack was rubbing at his head, wincing, while one of the other men shook his head fiercely and stepped away.

"Fuck this, man. I'm out," he said as he turned to leave, and the others quickly followed. Soon it was just Jack there with the crowd—and some of the cries of thankfulness had begun to turn to cries demanding the kirin's freedom.

"Let it go!"

"Take it back!"

Jack looked utterly defeated as he stood there, swaying a little, his head swimming. The crowd was shouting at him—and he was caving fast under the pressure, both literal and figurative. Finally, he let out a curse under his breath and stumbled away, thrusting the chains at Malila.

"Just get it outta here."

        Oh joy! Free kirin!
Malila took the chains and she stood. "Don't worry folks," she said to the crowd. I'll take the noble creature to a sacred grove where its brethren will be happy to take it home." She removed the chains from the kirins feet, but left the one around her neck to lead her by. "Don't worry," she whispered, "I'll remove the last one once we're out of town." Then she walked off, leading her new pet away from the people toward the edge of  town. She sang a happy sea shanty as she went, pulling her bottle back out and taking a swig.
"Could you believe those idiots," Malila's facade had fallen away now. A devious sneer was on full display as she turned to talk to her pet. "You and I are gonna be good friends. We're gonna make lots of money, and have a great time." Once they were well and clear out of town, Malila led the kirin off the path and removed her iron choker.

Her brethren? They would take her home? This woman knew where they were? Riyarin's chest tightened and her breath caught, and she wanted so badly to speak and ask the million questions swelling on her tongue—but she couldn't. Not in this form. Instead she could only wait impatiently, shifting anxiously as the woman removed the chains from her ankles and lead her away, her ears perked hopefully.

She was going home. Finally. This woman knew where her people were! She would see them again...after all these years...

It was like the gods had finally decided to have mercy on her and sent her a goddess to save her—

Except the woman was lying.

It hadn't clicked at first. Riyarin had known the woman was tricking those people, but she had thought she was doing it to help her. There had been so many lies and trickery, but she had thought it was to save her. So when the woman told her she was taking her to others of her kind...Riyarin had been so caught in the euphoria of freedom that she at first hadn't caught it—until their walk through town as the truth slowly sank in.

She wasn't taking her to her brethren.

That tightness in her chest grew suffocating, fresh realization sinking in and making her ears and tail droop. But the woman hadn't been lying about freeing her, she thought as the woman turned and removed the collar from her neck. She...surely she hadn't meant to give her false hope. Surely it was just to please the crowd...

The moment she felt fresh air hit her scales, Riyarin let herself Change, the transition seamless. One moment a kirin stood before Malila, and the next she was a naked, copper-skinned woman marked with small patches of emerald scales. She was short but willowy with wild, long red hair that fell to the ground in waves, spilling over her shoulders and covering her breasts. Her legs tapered off into cloven hooves, and antlers curled from her head.

She stared up at the woman, her ears back and tail swishing anxiously, one hand rubbing at her neck where the collar had been.

"...You're not taking me to my people, are you?" she asked quietly, frowning.
