Uthlyn / Pearls Before Swine [Giraffe]
March 04, 2024, 05:09:01 AM
Information traveled fast in a city where shadows had eyes and walls had ears. Word on the street was one self-proclaimed lord Gabriel Virias had recently acquired a letter with sensitive information regarding one of the church's bishops. Scandalous, outright heretical words penned by the bishop himself supposedly dotted the piece of paper, along the bishop's name and seal. Lord Virias likely intended to expand his influence by holding the bishop by his holy balls via blackmail, but a crafty sneak able to liberate the letter would undoubtedly make bank. Big animals like the parties involved were dangerous, yet extremely profitable to cross. Virias was known for his ties to the thieves' guild and it came as no surprise no local thief dared to cross the man. Independents, on the other hand...

One such freelance thief, a young half-elf, planned to abscond with said letter and poof before the 'lord' and his cronies turned the city upside down. The knife-ear's plan was nothing less than to squeeze the holy man for as much as she could and sell the letter back to Virias before the mobster-turned-lord sicked half the continent against her. It sounded easy in her head, but rather than worry about the after-robbery part, the girl's thoughts were currency pre-occupied by the break-in itself. The lord's mansion at Skinflint's Hill was bound to be stacked with valuables and guards alike. And as luck would have it, the new lord had called a masquerade ball for tonight, intent to weasel his way among the nobility.

A perfect opportunity for a thief.

Too perfect to miss, in fact, forcing the half-elven scoundrel to act fast. Over the past few days, she had mulled everything over and eventually, her mind had hatched a suitable plan or two.

Caslawen knew she lacked the posh manners and refined speech necessary to make it as a noble guest. That, and she had never heard of half-elven nobles. She knew, however, where her kind thrived; among the servants of noble lords and ladies. Short on staff for the upcoming event, the mansion was quick to hire almost any pair of hands. Especially if said pair of hands belonged to Eleanor, a thoroughly domesticated half-elf maid with excellent references; young half-elf maidens were always in high demand. Forging a foreign certificate and references gave Cas little trouble, especially since nobody bothered to check them up close. The same went for acquiring the same sort of outfit as she had seen on the servants from Virias manor.

Right now, with hours left to waste, she sat at the Speared Boar tavern. Still clad in a combination of leather and hide, she gave the appearance of a poacher rather than the maid she was to become. Soft, wistful tunes of a lute echoed through the establishment for the few customers within. Paying it no mind, Cas studied a makeshift map before her with an attentive gaze. Laid on the sturdy wooden table and inscribed on a discarded piece of paper, the map represented her only clue to the mansion's layout. Its accuracy was dubious at best as it had originated from the intoxicated mind of a drunken guard, but it beat going in completely blind.

A hand went to brush a strand of brown hair from her face before she perched her chin in a palm, resting the elbow against the table's frame and drawing a sigh. A bit of a hairball as far as her haircut went, the youngster didn't know whether to try and tame her thick, dark hair straight or leave it in its natural state. The teenage thief recalled how lower and upper social classes alike obsessed over the right and proper hair styling befitting their station but for the life of her could not remember the specifics.

*clink*

The familiar sound of a metal coin colliding with a wooden surface snapped her out of it. With a blink, Cas' scarlet gaze tore away from the map and scrutinized her surroundings for the source of the sound. She wouldn't say no to a purse full of silver if the opportunity presented itself.

Physical Description
A snow-haired girl with red eyes, Akayuki is a diminutive little creature whose body is as childish as her mind. In combination with her ghostly pale, delicate features, and soft skin that proves she has never been exposed to hardship or discomfort, her small size makes her look like an oversized doll. When she pouts, it is the most adorable, heart-wrenching thing in the world.

The ruby gaze of her eyes is sharp and attentive, and just like the disarmingly sweet smile of a poisoner upon her lips, serves as a hint there is more to her than she puts on. Her white hair reaches her shoulders and is often styled with pigtails and braids, a sign she likes to look pretty. The child is very peculiar about her outfits and wears only the finest silk robes money can buy.

Personality
Some call her a sweet little girl with morbid interests and an unhealthy obsession with death. Others claim her a murderous sociopath. The latter's a lie though, she only kills about ten people a day. Aside from her occasional homicidal tendencies, the little necromancer is ridiculously sadistic as the suffering of others fills her black heart with glee. A spoiled child who just happens to wield incredible powers, she often suffers from bouts of childish immaturity.

Akayuki holds a grandiose opinion of herself, looks down on others, and fully buys into her own delusion of being one of the greatest minds of all time. Any perceived disrespect is met with deadly force. On the other hand, she is easily appeased by being praised and revered as the undead demigod she claims to be. That and sweets. She loves sweets and is easily distracted by them. With sweets, Akayuki turns incredibly friendly and playful and one would hardly recognize her for the horror she is on her bad day.

Immortality has turned her dreadfully lazy, as she can simply outlive all of her problems without ever lifting a finger. In her opinion, life itself is a miserable condition that always ends with death, and since death can be cured, she is always willing to help when it comes to curing others of both life and death. Another one of her qualities is being a staunch undead rights advocate who believes every living being to be equal; that is equally inferior to her, a perfect undead. She is just nice like that, even as her cold diabolical brain weaves a new incredibly cunning and ingenious plot for COMPLETE WORLD DOMINATION!!!

Magic/Abilities
Akayuki is as powerful as she is lazy and can't be bothered to use her magic for anything productive. She can summon lightning from the sky or cast it from the tips of her fingers, either to show off or for 'self-defense' and torture. With just a thought, she can hover above ground, which she happily abuses to spare herself the horror of walking uphill.

Finally, her personal favorite, her hobby, her specialty; necromancy. The ability to bring the dead to unlife can be cast casually with just a gesture by the girl, no preparation required if the soon-to-rise corpses happen to be in her close vicinity. These undead have no mind of their own and only follow simple commands of their master. But they tend to rot and stink and are dumb.

If possible, she prefers to take her time, do the necessary rituals, and bring the dead back just as new, with their minds and bodies mostly intact and bound to do her bidding whether they like it or not. She finds the idea pretty funny and likes to imagine the suffering of fully conscious minds trapped in rotting carcasses.

Well-versed in the topic of immortality, she dabbles in alchemy also, hopeful to perfect an affordable solution to life that kills after digestion and immediately brings the drinker back to life, now a mighty fine zombie immune to decay, no loss of mental faculties, and completely free will.

This sort of thing is bound to save the world from death and erase the fear of losing loved ones once and for all! She has yet to find the right way to achieve this - most of her alchemical experiments end up horribly wrong, but it's all fun and games until a dead grandpa tears his family apart.

If her magic is disabled, she is entirely harmless. In the event of death while unable to use magic, her soul will still be caught by the phylactery as she slips into the afterlife and she will return to life in a designated safe place.

No, she doesn't know where her phylactery is either.

Relationships

History
The Cult of the Red Moon used to be a death-worshipping group of necromancers who believed the secret to eternal life lay within eternal undeath. All living beings were to be included in the undead utopia, and the only way to achieve blissful, immortal existence was through mass destruction, human sacrifice, demon worship, death worship, soul-rending, devotion to evil, and twisted rituals.

This commonly led to misunderstandings and conflicts with their neighbors and local communities. Considered heretics in every land they ever set foot on, the cult had to relocate every hundred or so years. That one Ansgar guy in particular took an issue with them and chased them off the continent entirely. Nobody understood their vision of bringing forth the apocalypse!

A prophecy spoke of a red-haired child to be born under the blood moon once the stars were right. Said child was to be the avatar of death, half-demon, and blessed with extraordinary powers, destined to end the world by ripping the fabric of reality to allow the dead to flood the world of the living. For ages, the cult was on the lookout for the right star alignment and other abstract signs.

When the malevolent day (night?) finally descended upon the world, the sun turned to darkness, and the moon to blood. Countless Red Moon cultists were sacrificed on that fateful night (day?), their souls and power offered to the coming dark messiah. A child imbued with the power of darkness was born, her eyes scarlet as the moon under which she was cast into the world.

A most promising sign.

The girl's snow-white hair caused some concern as the prophecy had foretold the child's hair would be red. This was attributed to mistranslation and retroactively corrected.

Named Akayuki, the so-called dark messiah was pampered and educated in the darkest arts, every moment of her life meticulously planned to prepare her to unleash horrors untold. Various unspeakable rituals and baths in fresh virgin blood had enhanced her magical prowess to terrifying levels. Akayuki's arcane might grew every day, the whole cult dedicated to ensure her success. Adept at forbidden knowledge before she turned six, she had constructed a phylactery and used revolutionary methods to achieve immortality.

In fact, the revolutionary way of cheating death proved so ahead of its time nobody else understood how it worked.

At the tender age of eleven, the girl was poised to unleash her terrible power and curse everyone with eternal undeath, just as foretold.

But then she caught a cold and died a week later.

But her soul remained safe in the phylactery so everything was alright.

But nobody knew how to resurrect her so she remained dead.

But after several centuries a group of would-be necromancers accidentally summoned her back as a perfectly preserved lich so it was okay.

But by then all of her followers had long since died; their precious tomes of dark knowledge burned, their temples torched, and all mentions of their very existence erased.

She was pretty bummed about it.

But with the cult gone and no peer pressure to force her to destroy the world, she found herself free to pursue her hobbies and dreams, like playing with dolls and killing people. Her dream was to craft a monstrous undead orchestra bound to entertain the world until she attempted to end it again, as the end of the world would be sad and boring with no epic music playing. She had also fixed her immortality problem, now able to summon herself back to life in case of death. Pretty handy.

Physical Description
Genevieve represents the very image of a fair warrior maiden, a woman of pure body and heart, clad in a shiny suit of plate armor. When rarely spotted outside of her fitted armor, Gen is noted to be distinctly feminine; attractive, and almost beautiful. Albeit well-endowed, there is no mistaking the knight's physique is in peak physical shape, athletic, and toned from years of relentless training.

Her jet-black hair is cut in a practical and short bob. A tender smile upon her lips often warms her face and invites trust, and although her eyes have the hue of steel grey, they glimmer with compassion. The knight's fair skin is spotless, free of blemishes or scars.

Personality
Soft-spoken and compassionate, if fraught with idealistic naivety, Gen is slow to condemn those guilty of practicing harmless magic and quick to defend the needy. Her very presence sparks hope in the hearts of the common people and brings light to darkness. The knight of the White Lily is a holy warrior who prefers to resolve disputes without needless bloodshed, opting for diplomacy over aggression.

When forced to fight she always defends others and herself from evil, her sword guided by mercy and chivalry rather than zeal. Prayers and faith in her god temper the occasional need for violence. Honorable to a fault, modest, and humble, she definitely fits the romanticized image of a knight in shining armor.

Magic/Abilities
Gifted with Adharaism, Gen is constantly surrounded by an anti-magic, anti-psyonic field of thirteen feet. This field negates any magical and psionic abilities. Magic cast from outside the field is canceled out upon touching it, and enchanted objects cease to work. In other words, an enchanted, flaming sword just becomes a sword. All creatures with magic or psionics are affected, but creatures that need magic to survive will not die; they may feel ill at worst, but they simply won't be able to use their magic. The effects only last within the Adhara's sphere of influence. Once an enchanted object is removed from that sphere, it will work again.

Raised at a monastery and trained since early childhood, she is familiar with prayers and religious texts, and is also great at singing religious hymns. As a knight, she has been taught the way of the sword, becoming an adept fighter unhindered by the weight of her plate armor. She is fully literate, knows how to patch wounds, rides horses, and can give her weapons and armor the care and maintenance they need while in the field.

Relationships

History
A war orphan, she was smiled upon by Ansgar and taken to the monastery of St. Adhara in early childhood following the discovery of her Adharaism. Given the name Genevieve and groomed into a future knight of the White Lily, Gen has lived a content, monastic life full of prayers and service to the church.

Once exposed to combat training, she became stronger and more agile with each passing year. Her days were filled with grueling exercises, the nights with study in the library. Finally, once a fully-fledged holy knight, she embarked on a pilgrimage to pay respects to sacred sites across the land.

Arca / I Put a Spell on You (Rylok)
February 25, 2024, 05:13:03 PM
Arca was a beauty to behold. A city of untold opportunities for the magically inclined and those who sought to get their grabby hands at valuable magical items. Even the air smelled of magic. Or perhaps it was exotic spices?

Waving goodbye to the trading cart that had transported her Serendipity's capital, a short figure confidently strolled toward the city gate, her pace matching that of a small group of nicely robed folks passing the cobbled street. She, a short half-elf clad in well-worn hides and leather, stood no chance at approaching unnoticed, though her vibrant scarlet eyes sneaked toward their belts in search of valuables anyway.

A grumble came from her stomach and the pickpocket was forced to readjust her plans. Her art of quick, nimble fingers could wait. Food was important. She only had to find a marketplace, scout the area for the number of guards and possible escape routes, and do her own magic.

An hour or so later, Cas was in the process of eating a nice, fat croissant she had borrowed earlier from a street vendor without his knowledge. With each bite, the chance of ever returning it grew slimmer. It was magic, really. One moment the evidence of theft was there, the next moment it was gone and she was a law-abiding and honest citizen.

Or maybe a vagabond. She did not know the rules!

With her stomach no longer grumbling, the young half-elf allowed herself to hum a jolly tune and trotted through the city's bustling streets. Beneath the jovial façade of an airheaded girl, a pair of greedy eyes spied for suitable targets. Serendipity was supposedly a nation of great mages, but she had yet to meet one with a bottomless purse.

The hard cobblestone beneath her feet was all too eager to remind her she wore soft-soled boots and prolonged strolls would be ill-advised. Cas knew she had to be quick. Efficient. She started toward her prey. A woman too busy chatting with another noticed nothing as a shadow came and went. The purse cut from the gossiper's belt had disappeared somewhere within Cas' outfit. She would try to count her bounty later; its weight was reassuring enough.

The corners of her lips turned upward and she continued to prowl the streets, roaming about. She planned to eat and sleep well tonight and no purse had to light a weight to avoid its fate.

Fate. That's what it was. Purses guarded too lightly were fated to be stolen.

__________________IN-DEPTH STUFF

Physical Description
Short in stature, Cas stands at around 5'1. At a glance, she appears to possess a dainty, slender frame, but a closer look reveals her to be more on the athletic side. Her chestnut brown hair is thick, dark, and as unruly as her spirit. Cas keeps it at chin length, giving her a tomboyish flair. The sharp, pointed shape of her ears gives no doubt about her elven heritage as the edges playfully poke from beneath her mane.

Caslawen's eyes are round and large, framed by a round face, and have the deep reddish hue of precious rubies with a glimmer of mischief. Her nose is button-shaped, a line of freckles dotted over it and spreading outward across her cheeks. No matter how much time she spends outside, she cannot seem to catch a tan, her complexion permanently fair. She moves with the stalking grace of a hunter and has the fragrance of freshly cut grass and autumn leaves about her.

A creature of practical mind, Cas prefers to don a combination of durable leather and hides for armor. Many concealed pockets hide within her apparel, a necessity for a thief. It comes as no surprise a spare knife rests secreted away within her boot; the footwear itself is thigh-high leather with soft soles to allow for a stealthy approach.

Personality
A wild, untamed thing without a goal or destination. Experiencing the duality typical for half-elves, she's not entirely human or elf, able to simultaneously fit in everywhere and belong nowhere. Her heart longs for the trees and lush clearings when enclosed within the city walls and misses the comforts of civilization when amid nature.

Caslawen has a natural talent for getting into trouble and usually finds herself at odds with the law. A petty criminal, she lies and cheats her way through life to stay fed and afford the freedom to never work an honest job. Caslawen is not lazy per se, but suffers from poor work ethics; lacking motivation, easily distracted, dishonest.

What separates Cas from hardened criminals is precisely that, her unfocused nature and unwillingness to put too much effort into anything worthwhile. Her selfish nature comes from self-preservation rather than callousness. At times she longs for a different sort of life, one with a meaning, but unfortunately lacks any sort of useful skillset to make that happen.

Magic/Abilities
A competent hunter, Caslawen has learned how to track beasts and her aim with a bow is something to boast about. She is also a capable sneak who can move almost unheard. Given enough time she can pick simpler locks almost as readily as she picks pockets. She is observant of her surroundings and scrutinizes the looks of others to determine the weight of their coin pouch. And she knows how to read and write, a surprising quality to find among scoundrels.

Relationships

History
Caslawen was the undesired result of a one-time affair between a charming elven shaman and a married noblewoman. Inheriting neither magic nor riches, she grew up traveling among wandering gypsies, mercenaries for hire, bandits on the run, valiant knights, starving refugees, and thieving comedians. Life was far from ideal and lacked meaningful connections and stability, but she always picked an odd skill here and there and usually departed in the dead of night richer several stolen items and coins. After discovering a talent for putting arrows where she wanted them, the half-elf put her natural dexterity and marksmanship to poaching.

This behavior put her at odds with local authorities and forced her to stay on the road. Then she found out how easily her nimble fingers could relieve others of their purses. When the hand of the law finally nabbed the thieving little half-elf and landed her in jail, she used a small trick to pick the lock and slithered into the shadows. And such was the simple life of a simple half-elf. It sure beat begging, as Cas would often comment with an impish spark in her eyes.
