CH. I – Painting a Portrait
Maxxen is a good looking man, with chiseled features and tanned skin, dark hair and dark eyes.  Though he's no longer in active duty, Maxx still bears a well-built body earned from years in the military and maintained solely through narcissism.  He has dark wavy hair, with some golden high lights here and there, and a well-trimmed beard, tracing his mouth and chin.   He likes fine clothes and fine accessories, among them a cigar case, a flask, and a knife in his boots – purely for emergencies only.

CH II – Mental Make-up
Maxxen is a cad by nature, and loves to have a good time, even if it's the most inopportune moment to do so.  He likes to drink, smoke, and gamble.  He's a risk-taker, enjoys games of chance and plays the game of life very much like how he plays cards.  There's a sense of fearlessness in this manner, or perhaps foolishness.  But when it comes to Maxx, it seems these two things become one and the same.  He oozes confidence, perhaps over-confidence, and often lacks the foresight to see when his 'confidence' gets him into trouble.  Which is more often than he would like.

He's not completely foolish, and knows when to hold 'em and fold 'em.  Of course on occasion, he still encounters confrontations – often following accusations of cheating – that Maxx tries to do well to avoid.  He's a lover not a fighter, and if he can weasel his way out of any kind of conflict, he will certainly try.  It's not difficult to conclude that Maxx has quite the silver tongue, and he's not afraid to use it.  It is both his armor and his weapon, using his natural charisma to win the confidence of people who might normally not even give him the time of day.

Maxxen is a liar, and will say just about anything to make matters lean his way.  He's clever with a quick wit, able to match even the most linguistic poets.  He likes money and the power that comes with it, and while he holds something of a disdain for nobility, he finds that they are not so bad once you convince them to be generous with their wealth.  He lives for the thrill of the confidence game – often using his family name, his title, and his well-bred manners; whether it's a rich widow, or being the lover of an unhappy wife, Maxx is always looking to move up.

With the war raging on, he never gives much attention to matters outside himself.  While he has some mage sympathies, he is much more loyal to Connlaoth than he would let on.  But as long as dreadful matters are kept out of sight, as far as he's concerned, they're out of mind.  All that matters is the now, and he tries to live every day to the fullest.

+ FAITH +
Maxx has little respect or care in the way of faith.  It's a waste of time, and he's quite sure Ansgar has better things to do than be concerned with the likes of him.

+ HABITS +
While Maxx may claim he's gambler by profession, he's definitely a gambler by compulsion.  He can't resist the temptation of risk, the thrill of all-or-nothing, the excitement of winning and the skill of a good bluff.  He gambles more than just on his hand, however, and is always on the look-out for the next big score, the next person he can con out of a fortune.

CH IV – Abilities / Skills
+ CHEMIST +
Maxxen has no magic to speak of, aside from his natural charm and manipulative behavior.  However, he does dabble a little in alchemy and herbology in his spare time.  He can make potent potions and potions, and keeps a book on his notes and findings of various plants and their properties.

+ KNIGHT +
Maxxen comes from a fine line of noble stock, father a minor duke in the province of Bellkrath, and became knighted at the age of 19.  He was raised a gentleman, but never took his lessons too much to heart.  He's only partly chivalrous when it counts.  He can ride well, and handle himself with a sword.  He has some skill in hand-to-hand fighting, enough to defend himself in a scuffle.  While he does not actively serve in the military as he once did, Maxxen retains his knighthood solely by the grace of his family name.

CH VI – Reflections of the Past
Maxx was born to the Lears of Bellkrath, a noble family occupying the section of Vale in the northern section of the province, his father, Duke Boris Lear, and mother Lady Vanessa Lear.  He was not the eldest child and would not inherit the duchy, being born the second son after his eldest brother Lukkas, and sister Jeanne.  As a boy, Maxx often was neglected by his parents, who were preoccupied with his older siblings, preparing Lukkas for the throne.  He was often left to his own devices, and sought to accomplish something all his own.

He was raised a gentleman, passing all the prerequisites required of a young nobleman: Chivalry, horsemanship, weaponry, and began as a squire for his knighthood at the age of thirteen.  He hoped to impress his father, perhaps enough to establish himself as a young man in his own right, to earn his respect, and perhaps even love.  But it seemed to be for naught.  Maxx did well for himself, and worked hard until he was knighted at 19.  Between those years, he seemed little more than an unnecessary attachment to his family.

He began to see little use in trying to prove something to a man that would give little damn about him.  Even his mother's affections were cold of little worth to him.  He lived life as he always did, to his own devices and had no care for anyone else but himself.   His family gave him no care until one day when a noble girl had come forth bearing a child out of wedlock, claiming it to be his.  Maxxen denied even touching her, though his father did not care to hear his side of the story.

Fearing a smeared reputation, Boris demanded Maxx wed her and be done with it, but he refused.  Finally his rage came to a boil and Boris cursed that Maxx would never amount to anything, that he would be nothing like his brother, that he should have never been born.  Maxx argued back, questioning why his father only bothered about him at this moment, that he cared more about his reputation than he did about his own son.  Boris would have none of it and disowned Maxxen at his defiance.

It was well enough for him and Maxxen went on to serve a few years in the military, promptly ending his service before the tension took to a boil in the nation.  He wanted nothing to do with it, and used what fortune he did have to set himself on his own in the major cities.  While he is disowned, and unwelcome in any good home in Vale, Maxxen continues to use his family name to his advantage wherever he can.
