Vel strolled through the streets of Uthlyn, taking in the sights. He liked the cobblestones here, they felt better than all the others he had been on. A product of the stone native to the region, no doubt. As he clicked down the streets, he looked at all the various kinds of shops that lined the streets. Cobblers, artists, bakers. If he had a nose, he assumed it would smell great around here.

"Stop!"

He stopped walking. Someone authoritative had just told him to stop, and he stopped. For a few brief moments, he hated himself. He turned around on his heels, facing the two town watchmen that were approaching him. "What the hell are you doing here?" One asked, and Vel went into his routine. He clasped all four of his hands into a bundle in front of him, and he gave a stiff bow. "Errands." He droned out, and the two guards exchanged looks once they noticed he wasn't exactly a person. "What?" the other asked, and Vel repeated himself. "C'mon, Gerry, it's probably another inventor's crazy machine. Let's leave." The first guard suggested, and they both walked away.

Vel waited until they were far enough away, and then he dropped his pose. "Idiots." He remarked, and resumed walking. He started humming a tune to himself, and considered walking into a store. He shrugged, having nothing better to do. He turned towards the first artist's shop he saw, and walked up to the door.

He stood there, idly whirring and clicking, before raising all four of his arms and simultaneously knocking on the door.

The day had been going rather slow for François; there were no commissions to work on, no paintings that needed final touches, and the tax collectors were not coming around this time of year. With a small chuckle, he looked from his desk at the back of the workshop. Someone was knocking at his door. A potential client, maybe? With a hopeful gleam in his eyes, he flew across the workshop.

"Bienvenue, monsieur. Comment puis-je vous aider?" he asked upon opening the door, not even looking at who... Or what, for that matter, was standing at his door.

Vel's anticipation was peaking as he heard someone stirring within the store. he had some money on him, maybe he could get something done. His hands clacked together with excitement. Maybe a self-portrait? definitely a self-portrait! He heard someone at the door, and when it opened, and he saw who answered, his clockwork heart missed a tick. Well, this was unexpected.

The creature's language was one he had studied, but not entirely mastered. The thoughts came swirling in, sounds and words visualized in front of him. He mustered his voice, and brought his tinny yet mature-sounding voice to bear. "Oui, il est. Je désire un portrait" He said, hoping he didn't completely butcher the language in which he spoke.

"Un portrait..." his voice trailed as he got a better look at his potential customer. His beak hung open for a moment as he looked in slight disbelief: there was a walking, talking piece of clockwork at his door, asking for a portrait... And it spoke his language...

"D'accord. Effectuez-vous argent de Serendipity ou Connlaoth?" he finally asked. If this bucket of bolts had Serenian coin on him, it wouldn't be too much trouble to convert to the Connlaothian coinage; a simple weighing on scales would provide a rough estimate. Regardless of what type of currency the walking clock had, it was income nonetheless. With a nod, he opened the door a bit wider and motioned for his customer to come inside.

Vel listened to the griffon, and worked on his response as he walked inside, his legs making clicking noises as they wound up with each step. Despite his clanky appearance, his movements were incredibly fluid, and he displayed this as he stepped inside and pressed one of his lower arms to where a human's heart would be. He marveled at the inside, an audible gasp escaping a vent on his back. "Simply...wonderful." He muttered to himself, and his two upper hands interlocked fingers. He turned on his heel, intent on answering the artist's question. "l'argent est de Connlaoth" he said, continuing to look around. He had saved some money, not that he needed food or anything, but he liked to indulge in these things every once in a while. It kept him sane. Whatever he found or earned doing odd jobs went into pleasures of the eye and ear.

"Combien?" He asked, turning to face Francois. The swirling clouds of soul-energy in the crystal ball that made up his head brightened rhythmically as he spoke.

François rubbed the lower part of his beak for a moment as he pondered. The lighting wasn't the best at midday for what he had in mind, and it was too early for candles. Idly spinning a dry paintbrush in his talons he had picked up as he worked his way around one the large tables that dominated the first floor, he couldn't help but smile and chuckle a little at the clock's question.

"Parce que je n'ai pas beaucoup d'argent... Une mille. " he said frankly. He was in need of supplies  and a minor renovation to his workshop, but had not sold anything lately, so one thousand seemed like a fair price. If the clock could not pay for the painting, then at least François would take some solace in the fact that he could possibly hire this piece of clockwork.

Vel was so caught up looing at the inside of Francois' studio, he almost missed his words. He looked at him for a bit, considering the price. A thousand was easily reachable with his stores of money, as he had...appropriated...his former master's funds (a veritable fortune) for his own purposes. He nodded, and extended one of his hands for a shake. "nous avons un accord." he said, and extended one of his lower arms out to the side. A small vortex formed just in front of it, and Vel thrust his hand in. He rummaged around for a few moments, before pulling out a cloth bag, and weighing it in his arm. "Cela devrait être un mille" He said, and laid it down on the table.
