__________________IN-DEPTH STUFFPhysical DescriptionRia has darkly tanned skin, deep brown hair with a hint of reddish tint to it, and dark brown eyes set under a slightly severe brow. Her lean, taut build is almost constantly tensed, like an eternally drawn bow string.
She has a wide collection of scars, though the most notable are two parallel lines over her left eye and a massive, ragged mark left by the grasping claws of a starving lioness over her right shoulder.
PersonalityA variety of words can be applied to Riala: diligent, fierce, loyal-- almost to a fault. But she is also surprisingly fragile. She loves her family and her home, and any losses she has suffered on that front break her heart, over and over.
She also loves flowers, though the ones that grow in the plains tend to be stocky, hardy things. soft petals and graceful vines are few and far between, though she's always secretly dreamed of seeing a real garden.
Magic/AbilitiesThough she has no magical ability, Ria is certainly more than adequately skilled with a bow: she's the best sharpshooter in her tribe. She also has basic knowledge of field medicine, and
can use a blade if she needs to. Though if she has to perform close combat, she prefers hand-to-hand.
And of course, like all Duhjari, she's an excellent horsewoman.
RelationshipsAshtari: her father and the current leader of the tribe, who took over when his older brother passed from illness and Riala's cousin, Lani, was driven away.
Lani: once the heir apparent to their tribes chief, now a banished disgrace. But Riala still loves her, and misses her terribly.
Ortec: her horse, a massive dun stallion with a rather large scar on his left flank.
HistoryRiala had a fairly happy and normal childhood, as far as her band's standards go. She grew up surrounded by friends and family, though she particularly idolized her older cousin Lanoula. Lani was strong, witty, passionate-- everything Ria wanted to be.
So she did her best to emulate her cousin in almost everything she did. Which included following the older hunters out on a raid when she was fifteen, even though her father and uncle-- the tribe's chief at the time-- expressly forbid her from doing so.
She didn't find any big game, but something found her. A mangy, starving lioness that had somehow wandered onto the plains, either from the desert or even further, and attacked the young woman as easy prey. But before the finishing blow could fall, Riala was saved.
A yearling from the herd that Ria had bonded with a year prior charged the lion, earning himself a scar that matched his mistress's, but working together the two managed to kill her and drag themselves back to camp. Both Riala and the young stallion were given permission to become true hunters of the tribe, and she was allowed to give him a name: Ortec, "the defender".
Several years later, her uncle took sick, and then he died. Lani was meant to take over the tribe, but her uncle-- Riala's father-- protested the appointment. Lani was forced to fight in an honor circle. Though she miraculously managed to survive, her life-mate Nemeira was killed protecting her. Stripped of her tribal name and her honor, Lani was sold to Essyrn as a slave.
Losing her cousin and her friend broke Riala's heart, though she fought to remain a devoted member of her tribe. Lately though, that had become more and more difficult. Since her father took over, things have been...rough. He is war-hungry and arrogant, and doesn't seem to much care if their tribesmen are sacrificed in his quest for glory.
