A harsh wind had been blowing through the forest this day, a strange one that carried with it uneasy promises. The woods seemed to be speaking to one another in hushed tones, perhaps plotting some fell disaster. There was a heaviness to the air. Some might say it was unnatural. Others would say it was magic but dismiss that immediately. For had it indeed been so, the mages of La'marri would have surely done something about it. No, there must be nothing magical about it. It was simply an odd wind on a too-long afternoon as summer began to drift slowly away.

Yet the heaviness had reached a local library and scriptorium used as a frequent resource by several local mages, and this in a place that was already unduly stuffy during the summer months. Betwixt the slightly cruel warmth of that wind and the already oppressive heat dampened only a little by the salt spray blowing in from the sea, it was no wonder that windows had been opened to at least keep the dust from choking its inhabitants. So when a window suddenly and inexplicably slammed shut, echoing through a quiet corner of one of the library's many alcoves for isolated study, it made several people jump.

As late in the day as it seemed to be, the shadows long and the sunlight swiftly beginning to dwindle, this was taken as a sign that it was time to pack up books for the day by all but a couple of people. Those that remained drifted to another area where a window still stood open, leaving the little corner of the large room abandoned but for one strange sprite to whom "small" meant "enormous" and "large" meant "gargantuan". What to even dwarves was merely a spacious room filled with shelves lined with innumerable volumes of great variety and cubbies stuffed with scrolls was a cavern of vast proportions to the odd-looking person that now dropped to the soft carpet.

They were unnoticed among the tables laden with writing materials and forgotten manuscripts and other documents, which was to their great advantage. Crossing the floor to weave between the legs of the furniture, around the tome-bearing cliffs and through the passages that held doors large enough to bear an army of such individuals, was a strange little fellow with curly red hair dancing about their shoulders and too-pale skin. They were slender and had dark circles beneath their eyes, as though they had not slept properly in quite some time. Small black spots rough in texture but tender to the touch dotted their flesh, unhealthy lesions glistening amid a light sheen of secreted poison.

Chelsika had not bathed in at least a day and although they did not stink fit enough to cause a stir, they definitely did not smell like lilacs. Their breath was probably the worst of it, evident to anyone who got close enough to pick up on such a thing. Their long, forked tongue tasted the air and learned many things, and the vertical black slits set into their yellow eyes darted this way and that with as much caution as curiosity. The off-white shirt they wore did not well hide the bluish veins that stood out upon their skin, nor the filthy nails upon their fingers and the bare toes that peeked out from beneath a pair of dark-brown cotton britches a size too large. A bit of thick yarn bound the shirt and britches together, keeping them firmly in place, and they kept their hands in their pockets for the moment as they wandered into a store room full of supplies.

Given their height, they had about two shelves to their head and they were mostly filled with junk they didn't care about. But beyond those first two shelves, they'd need help. There had to be more useful things higher up, right? Something that they could trade or sell, maybe something shiny...something magical? Mages all about in these libraries, after all. Well, there was one way to find out.

Climbing up was difficult, but a long string used as a rope with a lasso at one end made things a little easier. Sixteen inches did not a tall fellow make, though they certainly were not as small as many fairies and pixies were. Collecting their string, they looked about the shelf they'd climbed up onto. They had to crouch to fit on the shelf properly, and there was the issue of a fall if their feet strayed a wee bit too far from what was stored thereupon.

There were several small boxes here - chests to Chelsika - but surely nothing magical would be stored in them. Checking them one by one, they discovered that they were all locked with the exception of a few. One unlocked box held scrolls smaller than they were bearing notes on various things, mostly sales and purchases of materials and who had loaned which books or studied which scrolls at which times on which days. Another held pots of ink and oil for writing and lamps, and a third held quills. One held marbles roughly the size of their head, however.

What purpose the marbles could serve was uncertain, but they were quite pretty. One in particular looked like it had red sand inside that shifted with the slightest movement. Grinning, they slipped that one into their pocket - and heard the soft whoosh that most larger ears could not hear as it slipped into the pocket universe created by Chelsika's magic. Another marble was solid but had swirls of green and blue inside; it was pretty but they decided not to take it. Instead, they took a purple one that sparkled with glitter and two pink ones with white swirls that made them look like eyes. They would definitely be coming back here later for more marbles, but they wanted to see what else they could find for now. On second thought...they took the blue-green marble as well. Why not? It wasn't like their pocket universe couldn't handle it. That's what magic was for, after all.

Poking about some more, they climbed up to the next shelf and pulled down one of the books in the process. It hit the floor with a fwump, bending some pages and landing splayed so that its spine rose above the floor. Whoops. Well, someone would clean that up eventually. There was sadly nothing interesting behind the book, and the book itself looked like some kind of log - very boring. But, thinking to make it look like the shelf had just been bumped or something, Chelsika spent a few moments pushing several more books onto the floor as well. They'd made quite a mess down there.

Satisfied, they turned to the time-worn shelf's edge again. A loose nail made climbing even easier than using the notches in the wood this time, and the third shelf looked much more promising. This one held a book that was some kind of record of existing stock in mundane artifacts of unknown origin. Several of the items were marked as potentially magical, and one was specifically listed as "definitely magical"! Ooh, Chelsika did so love magical objects. The ring mentioned was likely too large to carry on its own, but if they could find a pouch somewhere, that'd be as good as a sack and better with their liminal magic for carrying it. Wait, what was that noise?

Hurriedly, they closed the book with a thump and wove their innate magic into a hasty bit of invisibility. Footsteps carried their owner into the room now, and the mess would be found almost immediately. Of that, Chelsika was certain. But where the weave should have taken hold, it instead dissolved like water. Something wasn't right, and they had no time to cast the spell again; instead, they simply shrank back into the shadows and hoped for the best...

"For the last time Eldrian, when you hear something you don't just stand back and hope someone else will come along and do your job!" An average woman with a nose much too small for her face and ears to rival a person three times her size. Her face was splotchy from exertion and small beads of sweat blossomed upon her brow, but that didn't deter the grip that held a boy of about 10 as she dragged him through the corridors.

The boy's eyes were red, but whether from dust or pain, it was hard to tell. If there was one thing the Library had in droves, it was dust.

And books.

Oh, so many books.

And some of them had fallen off a shelf. Ni's hand flew to her throat as a curdled half-scream bubbled from her lips.

"Oh no no no no! Eldrian, look what you've done! These are ancient texts from the farmers dating back to the fall of Fell outlining their grain yields and your incompetence has left them lying here on the floor!" Tears filled her eyes and she released the boy's arm so she could scoop the texts every so carefully into her arms.

"Go check the ledgers, boy." She ordered, "Whoever used this room last is no longer welcome here." she straightened the books, uncrumpled the pages, and cooed at them like a mother tending to the wounds of her child.

Gee, she's mean, thought the strange little fae to themself.

Thinking for a moment, Chelsika grinned. The "rope" was still up and the next shelf also held books. Since their magic wouldn't work properly in here, it seemed - typical mages, likely putting up some kind of shield against magic - they would just have to be extra quiet. Chelsika waited until they were sure the woman wasn't looking in their general direction before moving. They climbed quickly and pulled the string up after them while the librarian's back was turned. They were about to set their plan in motion when a tingle caused them to sneeze. It was a quiet sound, but the store room was very quiet. Nonetheless, the action shook off their illusion. In the blink of an eye, they ducked betwixt a couple of leaning books and slipped behind one of them.

If the librarian's ears were sharp, or even they weren't, she probably heard that. It was a tight fit back here but Chelsika was concealed for the moment. Peeking through a tiny gap, they watched to see what the librarian would do next. If she didn't react - and she might not, considering how motherly she was being toward those books right now - Chelsika would proceed to see just how much they could annoy this ginormous woman.

Ni gingerly carried the books, stroking their spines and whispering quotes from each text as she placed them back on the shelves.

"Niliath gathered twelve and twenty stalks of goldest wheat." She murmured, "Year 42 after Fell."

Soon all of the books were back and she stepped back to look at the shelves, counting. If someone had been so careless and destructive, they easily could have carried away others in a satchel.

Generally speaking magic was prohibited within the confines of the library, but only the types that could cause fires or aide thieves. She had enchanted items littered everywhere with anti-magic charms that focused on illusions and, especially fire. She had made sure everything was fire proof, but magic wasn't infallible and she wasn't about to take chances.

Neither had her ancestors.

Still, she counted. There were 318 books in this nook along with 86 scrolls. She would make sure they were all there.

Wrinkling their nose a bit, they looked about and saw a bit of ribbon sticking out of each of several of the books. They were clearly meant as markers, but they were soft and silky and perfect for handkerchiefs of the more luxurious variety. So Chelsika picked a red one and awkwardly reached up to tug it down a bit. The woman was focusing so much on arranging and counting the logs that had been dropped that they probably didn't notice one of the books moving as Chelsika followed this thought to its logical conclusion; they then stuffed the ribbon back inside the book so that it wasn't hanging out like the other ribbons. They felt a little better now.

It was starting to get very warm back here, though; well, either that, or a fever was starting to pick up again - probably both. Wiping their forehead on their sleeve, clearing away some of the secreted poison from their skin, they began slowly pushing out a book on the end of their current shelf. It fell with a loud thump, though unfortunately in such a manner that it merely lay there as though placed rather than dropping haphazardly like some of the original group.

Then a second book dropped, spread-eagle on the floor, right next to the first.

And then a third. And a fourth. And a fifth.

Frowning, they tried to weave together an illusion of eyes peeking out from amid the books that remained - large, dark eyes barely visible in the shadows that blinked a couple of times before winking out of existence - and make child-like laughter be heard coming from somewhere distant, yet at the same time, almost seeming to be in the room itself somewhere. Yet again, these simple illusions fell apart as soon as they formed. Now they were frustrated as well as potentially feverish. Chelsika pushed a couple more books forward a wee bit without dropping them and sat down slightly more comfortably behind them. They also had a better view from behind the remaining books than they'd had before.

"202, 201, 203, 204, 205,"SLAM! The book fell from the shelves and Ni let out a blood curdling scream.

Then another.

Another.

Another.

"ELDRIAN!!!!!" The woman ran towards the door to the winding staircase that waited outside. This tower, much like every other room in the building, had exactly one entrance and exit. It was designed this way to make sure no one could leave without being properly searched at the front gate.

"ELDRIAN! THE POLTERGEISTS ARE BACK! GET THE BLESSED WATER!"

Another book slammed onto the ground, "THE BIG BUCKET!" she added before bustling over to the jar of marbles and selecting an iridescent bauble which she squeeze in her hand.

"Dear esteemed guests," her voice projected from every room. It sounded calm and warm; the exact opposite of who this woman actually was. "We regret to inform you that our resident poltergeist is yet again up to its usual tricks. Should you experience any unexplained phenomenons please report to our nearest red-vested staff and they shall assit you post haste. We value your patronage and pray this trouble won't taint your image of our collection."

She squeezed the marble again and placed it back in the bowl.

"You stop your mischief, vermin!" She wagged one ink-blackened finger at the shelf, "You'll regret showing your face back here again when we're finished with you."

She turned back to the staircase, "ELDRIAN! Confounded boy. Where have you gotten off to?" She spun a gold ring on her finger which sealed the room in a magical barrier to make sure their unwelcomed guest couldn't make a run for it through the walls before they delt with it. Then she pressed a piece of paper on each of the shelves which glowed faintly as the magic secured the books to the shelves so no more could get thrown about.

Oh, a poltergeist, am I?

They did jump slightly at the scream but the startlement passed immediately and was quickly followed by grinning. Chelsika had to clap their hands over their mouth to prevent them from actually laughing out loud. Oh, this woman was gonna be fun to torment - especially since Chel had just spotted something very interesting at the back of this shelf: a tiny hole. It was a tight squeeze, but there were more loose nails behind the shelf. This thing hadn't been tended in quiet a while, and it had probably been built in haste. With this, they were able to climb alllll the way to the top and hide among the pottery stored up here.

They tried to move one of the pots but they were very heavy. There were times when being what Chel was did not please them - like this. Their particular variety of fae was swamp-born, you see, and carried all sorts of nasty illnesses. They were almost immune to many of them...but not quite. Yeah, they were definitely getting a fever again. They let out a quiet breath and rested for a few moments to regain their strength. That climb was tiring.

While they were sitting there, they quietly lifted the lid on one of the smaller jars. It was some kind of liquid incense; it smelled strongly of cinnamon. They quietly put the lid back down. One whiff of that was enough to spice the queen's tea, so to speak. Not that they minded the smell of cinnamon, but that was strong. They wondered what the other jars held. The whole room was starting to smell of cinnamon now just from that brief opening.

In what took entirely too long, the boy returned with what looked like a fancy crystal spritz can; the kind of thing a gardener would use to care for more delicate plants.

Ni smacked Eldrian across the back of the head, "what took you so long!?" She demanded and then, "I said the BIG bucket you daft thing..." another smack, but this time the boy was able to dodge.

"I'm sorry, Mistress!" He cowered, "Master Lyloa took it after your announcement and wouldn't let me have it."

"You tell that old fool he works for me and I control this library!" without another look, she slammed the door in his face.

Ni turned back towards the shelves and waved her left hand vigorously in front of her. A silver ring blossomed to life and the books on the shelves seemed to....phase out of existence. Then she raised the glass vial and the exorcism began.

A massive mist appeared before her and began to spread through the room like licking mist. She spritzed again and the mist got even more dense and filled every crevice with water. If that spirit remained in the room, this water had been blessed by the elven priests in the area and would burn it instantly.

Chelsika was just starting to feel like maybe they could get up again - it was a debate - when the woman complained to Eldritch (or was it Elroy? Eh, one of them) and slammed the door. In the next moment, a strange mist began to fill the room. It even slipped betwixt the pots, covering and concealing the sprite. It clung to them but felt like...water? They rubbed down their skin with the mist, which actually helped to cool them off. After a moment, they sat up and took a couple deep breaths. Finally, they could get on their feet. They were still feverish, but at least they could move now. And they were probably a little cleaner, too.

Sneaking about the pots, they got a glimpse of the room. They could reach a curtain for a high window from here but couldn't see much else. Their hands were a bit shaky, but they figured they'd try it anyway. Leaping over to the curtain rod, they slipped off and caught themself on the curtain itself. Then they slid down until they hit the sill. Whew. They sat down behind the curtain and tried to think up another idea.

Illusions wouldn't work, apparently. They didn't know how to do that voice trick where you throw your voice somewhere, so that was out. As they were looking about, they saw something glinting on the floor far below...and grinned. A mouse trap. Of course. They got up and used the curtain to slide the rest of the way down. Sure enough, it was baited near a mouse hole with a small bit of cheese. Ever so carefully, they removed the cheese - and leapt out of sight behind a table leg as the trap shut with a loud and sudden SNAP!

Ni jumped and a startled squeal escaped her thin lips. Her long skirts blossomed about her like a mushroom before settling back down to touch to tops of her very sensible shoes.

"You little nuisance!" She barked, pressing the spray bottle half a dozen more times until the air was so opaque you couldn't even tell if your nose was still attached to your face.

"I'll. Show. You. To. Show. Your. Face. Here. Again." She emphasised each word with another pump.

"ELDRIAN! WE'LL NEED MORE!" she shrieked.

Between the squeal and the thickening of the mist as the librarian ruthlessly assaulted the defenseless mouse trap, Chelsika was quietly laughing. This woman would be pulling her hair out before the end. Thankfully, the mist in the room was blinding at this point. Chelsika stuck the cheese in another pocket, where they kept the string and other useful items in a separate pocket universe, and tried to catch their breath. It was a good thing no sound was coming out but not so good a thing that they were almost wheezing. It took a moment.

Finally, Chelsika reasoned where the other legs would be and swiftly made their way from one to another until they got close to the woman. They cupped their hands together over their mouth to muffle their voice slightly and spoke in a loud whisper.

"You make such lovely noises..."

And with that, they dashed away to stand under a chair, silently laughing. Their hair just brushed the underside of the chair, which was set rather low, and they leaned against one of its legs. This running about was tiring when they felt feverish, though the mist was helping greatly.

"Oh no you don't, demon." She had run out of the mist that usually worked on the poltergeists they'd run into before, but she was also extemely well read and knew that not every trick worked with every spirit.

The library also had plenty of knooks and crannies.

Hmm...perhaps this trickster had managed to get inside the walls before she sealed it. That would explain how it was evading the mist.

She turned the top of the crystal vial three times counterclockwise and the mist started slowly sucking back in. After all, waste not want not! Her family had spent centuries perfecting every little bit of infrastructure and recorded every tiny detail.

Those were kept in the catacombs that were sealed against all intruders except those with the bloodline. Even a bug riding in on a shoulder would get zapped before accessing those ancient and important texts.

She waved her arm again in a series of intricate patterns. A little handy bit of magic thet instantly relocated the books and scrolls stored here to an alternative location within the library.

Only one thing for it.

"ELDRIAN!" She shrieked.

"Y..y...yes madam?" His voice was muffled on the other side.

"Change of plans. Bring the Light."

Chelsika was disappointed when the mist started disappearing. They liked the mist, frankly. It was cool and refreshing and...aaaaand it's gone. But the librarian mentioned light as well. Hmmm...yeah, might be time to leave. They managed to get to a shelf on another wall of the room fairly quickly, but the boy was standing right there. Sixteen inches wasn't miniscule, so it was best to wait.

They sat down and pulled out one of the marbles to look at - the one with the red sand was the one that popped out first. Toying with it a bit, they accidentally dropped it on the carpet - and left a red stain when they picked it up. Experimentally, they put down the marble and picked it up again, and the stain was gone. Rolling it against the wood produced a similar effect, and Chelsika grinned broadly.

When the boy ran off to get the light, he left the door open.

Perfect!

Careful to avoid the librarian's gaze, Chelsika drew a lewd stick figure pic on the door with the red ink the marble produced. They stopped to admire their handiwork for a moment before realizing that they probably should not linger. Then, with another broad grin, they dashed out the door into the library proper before they could be caught. They quickly found the stacks and started looking for mischievous potential among them.

Eldrian returned fairly quickly. Good. So the boy was learning. You had to be quick on your feet if you wanted to make it in this business.

Not libraries specifically, books usually couldn't hurt you.

But this library. Well. There was a reason parts of it were locked tight and only certain, highly trained staff had access. Eldrian's wrist band was one of a novice and only opened places with the non-compromising texts and artifacts.

Like this room

A small squeak alerted Ni to his presence.

"Well don't just stand ther--" her words cut short as she saw the picture. "Good Gods I hate poltergeists." She raged. Grabbing a marble and quickly erasing the ink.

"Don't just stand there, boy, if you're to work here you're going to need a thicker skin. Now, the light."

The Light was an odd looking contraption with intermingled crystals and gems that looked almost like the glass used to reflect lamps in a light house. This one had numerous different colors, different spells, all expertly crafted to cleanse. Sometimes people even used it when they felt a cold coming on (though that was prohibited and came with a high penalty plus a demotion).

Ni set the lamp in the middle of the room, stooped down, and blew gently onto the center crystal.

"Shades. Now." She demanded. Both she and Eldrian pulled out deeply tinted glasses and put them on as the light grew brighter and brighter...

The stacks, of course, were exactly as they should have been: large and boring. Hundreds of tomes all lining the shelves on just about every subject one can imagine, and likely catalogued very neatly by some box of cards somewhere held by a snooty librarian...such as the one currently trying to blind herself in the storage room Chel had just been in, for example. However, in a place this large, it wasn't unexpected to have a wee bit of a mouse problem. That was evident from the hole in the back of that one shelf, the mouse-hole Chelsika had found, the trap sitting just outside it...

...and the cat that suddenly and silently appeared seemingly out of nowhere right in front of them. They blinked, startled, as the cat started sniffing about. Then Chelsika's lips once again started to twist into a slow grin once more. It was almost an evil, sadistic grin...except that Chel wasn't really evil so much as very bored and a lover of mischief. A quick snap of the fingers made the overly friendly cat jerk back, blinking rapidly and twitching its ears. A bit of whispering, almost cooing, and some gentle strokes and a kiss upon the nose were all it took to channel magic into the creature.

Oh, this was going to be fun...

The light bloomed, almost solid in appearance, and stretched out to every crevice and every section of the room. This was an incredibly rare artifact that worked wonders in scaring off pests (both alive and dead). You could even change out the crystals to get a specific desired effect. Some spirits were more keen to run from certain runes and colors, but generally a little bit of everything did the trick.

After a few moments the lantern sucked the light back into itself, glowed for a second or two, and then went dark once again a beautiful object with a special little secret.

"Lovely." Ni sighed and removed her shades. She handed them, and the lantern, to the library assistant and straightened her solid blue waistcoat which was a sign of her station within the library.

After a few minutes of silence, she proceeded to wave her hand and with a flash of her rings the books returned, unharmed, to the shelves.

"Eldrian, return that to the front and then come back to verify the book and scroll count." She demanded before brushing past him back into the main library. She was a very busy person and didn't have time to waste when valuable patrons waited for her.

The cat was very friendly, it seemed, even without the fae magic flooding through him. Yes, it was definitely a him. Chelsika checked. Of course, now all the cat wanted to do was snuggle - which was perfectly fine, except Chel wasn't in the mood to snuggle. Keep that up and the cat wouldn't be, either. By the time Chelsika had managed to mount the creature, the cat was already sneezing. Hope the library had good healers on hand. Then again, it wasn't the cat they were gonna need to worry about in a second.

As the light faded from the room and Eldrian began to carry the lantern back, the last couple of patrons out in the main room left for the day. There was quiet for a few moments as the librarian prepared to return to her duties. That quiet was not to last.

First came the sound of a pot shattering; then another; and a third, this one spilling water as well as soil. Then came the sound of books hitting the floor. When one particularly large book fell, it slammed into a podium holding another large book. The loud, dull thud of the podium hitting the carpet was accompanied by the flapping of pages and the crashing of bottles of ink as something very large and furry dashed past in a blur, leaping from one shelf to another, with...something...holding onto it for dear life! The cat burst through one of the more open shelves, knocking aside more books and landing - somehow - on top of a globe. It quickly scrambled a bit, and the spinning globe popped off its pedestal and began rolling down the aisle as the cat leapt away to cause even more chaos.

Winifred, the head librarian, was confident in her abilities to exorcise ghosts; especially those pesky poltergeists that tended to haunt the stacks. Every year they got a few new ones who attached themselves to some donation or another.

Which was strange that there hadn't been any new additions lately....

She brushed it off. Nothing withstood the Light. Some might recorporealize after a time, but that usually gave her enough time to figure out exactly what kind of geist it was and how to better deal with it.

Now, she bustled about, activating cleaning spells around the building and watching as brooms lept to their "feet." A clean home meant a clean mind, she always felt. And the library was basically her home. After all, she did live there.

At first, she thought one of the brooms had gone off again but then....

What was that!?

"Romeow!!!" She shrieked. "Romeow darling boy, what has you!?" And she gave chase.

Through one shelf, across another, dashing down aisles and between the furniture - all around the room the cat ran and jumped. Like his passenger, Romeow was having the time of his life. It was all Chelsika could do not to burst out laughing in mad glee. Past the stacks to the public collections they flew, around the main check-in desk, and straight up the trunk of the tree planted nearby. It was there that Chelsika was caught by a branch and seemed to stick, but the cat wasn't nearly done. It leapt from the tree to the stairwell and then from there back onto the floor. It continued to zoom around for a couple of more minutes before eventually rolling around as though it had gotten into a pile of catnip.

The whole time Chel watched this from the tree, they were laughing so hard that they weren't making a sound. They could barely breathe! Thankfully they were concealed by the branches and the leaves. Also thankfully, they had enough presence of mind not to fall out of the tree. Had they tear ducts, their eyes would have been swimming and stinging with salt. And of course, another cat came along and wanted to get into the excitement as well - so it promptly leapt off a counter, knocking over several books in the process, and began to play with the cat that Chelsika had charmed.

Who knew libraries could be so exciting?

Winifred hadn't been in charge of this library for the past 25 years on sheer luck and nepotism. She had earned her place time and time again and it took a lot to make her spooked.

This nuisance was not scary. No. This creature made her angry.

"YOU." She snarled pointing at the tree. She couldn't see the pest now, but she had seen it go there...

Then it got Julicat.

"ENOUGH." Ni bellowed and slapped her hands together. A blinding light erupted from her rings as they collided and everything froze. The books that were mid topple now hovered in the area as if frozen in time. The cats were mid jump, though their eyes still moved. Even the dust particals stopped floating and remained where they were.
A duck walked up to a lemonade stand.....
