SotE is a very relaxed game and we don't ask for much! If you have any questions that you can't find the answer to, feel free to ask! Also consult our FAQ.

SotE's staff reserves the right to address any issues that aren't expressly mentioned in the rules, but prove to be problematic, on a case by case basis.

OUT OF CHARACTER GUIDELINES
  • Respect each other. SotE is a diverse community, so please exercise tolerance of race, religion, age, gender, and sexuality. Hate speech and slurs of any sort (including racial slurs, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, and ableism) are never acceptable out of character. Let’s keep this place fun, welcoming, and comfortable for everyone! If another member ever makes you feel uncomfortable for any reason or if anything ever affects your enjoyment of the game, please tell us; we want to help. This includes off-site bullying.

  • Keep all OOC discussions at or below a PG-13 level. The OOC areas (including the cbox) are safe spaces.

  • Respect peoples' boundaries. Emoting hugs and snuggles is fine, but ask first before you do it! Not everyone is comfortable with that.

  • Check the drama at the door. We don't want it here! Rumor-mongering, OOC drama, and all that not-so-fun stuff will not be tolerated. If you want drama, then keep it in-character!

  • Be outgoing! Don't wait for plots to come to you; initiate some!

  • We're a one account per player game. Please register with a nickname you would like to be called and avoid using numbers or underscores.

  • Read our art usage policy! It's quite important!

  • Avatars can be no larger than 150 x 200 pixels. Signature graphics can be no larger than 700 x 400 pixels. It's recommended that you keep a list of all the characters you play in your signature.

CHARACTER GUIDELINES
  • You may play as many original characters as you like. Fandom characters and races will not be accepted.

  • All characters must be from SotE's world (specifically the continent of Le'raana) and fit into the setting. If you want to transplant a character from another game to SotE's world, just make sure to tweak them to fit the game. If you want your character to be from another world/realm/dimension, contact an admin for approval first. Don't be afraid to ask if you need help!

  • This is a medieval high fantasy game set in an original world. Feel free to draw inspiration from real-world nations and religions to create your own original cultures, but remember that this game takes place in an entirely separate universe. Similarly, as this game is set in a middle ages inspired time period, characters should not have modern mentalities. For more modern characters, Remnants of the Earth may be a better fit.

  • Feel free to create your own species and cultures within the world. Wanna play your own brand of fae, unicorn, elf, or whatever else? Go for it! Wanna make your own small village? Knock yourself out! Entire nations, however, need to be approved first.

  • Characters should all have weaknesses. If you want a god-like character, please run it by the admin first.

  • No crack. This isn't a crack game and realism fully applies!

  • Research is your friend! No one expects you to have intimate knowledge of, for example, medicine if playing a doctor or military life if playing a soldier, but you should know enough to realistically portray your character. This is especially true if you are playing non-cisgendered characters, characters who fall in the LGBTQIA spectrum, characters with mental illnesses, etc. We expect them to be handled respectfully and realistically and for enough research to have been done to portray them inoffensively. A character may have stereotypical traits or be confused about their identity, but the player should be aware of that. Remember, we do have players who fall into those categories and it can be hurtful to see them caricatured.

  • Don't break the world. Make sure that you play realistically within the world, as it makes it hard for other players when people don't. Even if your character behaves or thinks differently from the setting's norm, it's important to remember that they are not the norm and should be treated as such, by other characters and by NPCs. Examples of setting breaking: having a character wearing blue jeans and speaking Japanese; throwing around fireballs in Connlaoth and not having NPCs or other characters react to it; having NPC guards be totally useless while a character commits a crime; using a real-world deity's name as an expletive when those religions don't exist in SotE's world. Let's keep the world in one piece!

  • This is a consent-based game. Players have the option of setting their own limits regarding their character and what can happen to it. No one can kill, control, or alter another player’s character without that player’s permission.

  • Keep player knowledge and character knowledge separate. You may know a character is secretly an assassin, but does your character? Don't have your character "just know" unless they actually figured it out.

  • In-character actions result in in-character consequences. If your character breaks the law, they may be caught. If your mage publicly flings fireballs in Connlaoth, they will get in trouble. Please exercise realism in your roleplay and remember that while limits are to be respected, they also cannot be used to escape consequences.

MATURE THEMES
Mature themes involving violence, gore, drug use, sex, abuse, and other such "mature" topics can and do appear in some threads and plots. You must make sure that any other players involved in the thread are comfortable with these subjects prior to writing them. Please be mature, tasteful, and responsible when dealing with these subjects. Your character may think that rape, abuse, or murder is funny, but the player should not be joking about these things and it should be handled like the serious subject it is.

By reading and/or participating in threads containing mature content, you are agreeing that you are 18 years of age or older.

ROLEPLAYING GUIDELINES
  • We believe in quality over quantity and respect for other players' writing styles. We don't have a word count and we don't have any "match the other player" requirements. Just write what fits the scene and have fun! If that means writing a single word, write a single word. If that means writing 800 words, write 800 words. There is no room for elitism here and no one should feel ashamed of their post lengths or feel pressured to write more than they need or want to write. This is a game, not a competition!

  • Please write in third person, past tense and use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

  • Please do not change the font colors or sizes for in character posts.

  • We run on liquid time. Your characters can be in as many threads as you wish but it all must take place in the same timeline/continuity. Be sure to keep track of which thread happens when on the timeline.

  • No AUs. While characters may be in multiple threads at once, they must all be part of the same continuity/canon. If you want to play out an AU, we have a separate board for that.

  • There are no posting orders in group threads, but players can choose if they want their own threads to have one.

  • We welcome instant messenger RP! Just remember to post the log to the forum.

  • Private threads should be marked as [private] or contain the other player's name. Open threads will be marked with the [open] tag. Threads with no tags at all will be assumed to be open. Anyone is free to join open threads at any time. If you no longer want people to join your open thread, please be sure to change the tag to [closed] or [player name], otherwise it's fair game. ;D
