Give 'em a read through! They look worse than they are and mostly explain what you can do as opposed to
what you can't, as SotE is a very relaxed game. Most of them are common sense, but there is a lot of
important stuff here! If you have any questions that haven't been answered after all this, check out our FAQ!
- This is a consent-based game. The character is the property of the player, and so it is up to each individual
player to set their own limits regarding their character and what can happen to it. That is to say that no one can kill,
permanently disfigure, control, or read the thoughts of another player’s character without that player’s permission.
- Be realistic. If your character gets into a fight (especially with someone stronger or more
experienced), s/he will get injured. In-character actions result in in-character consequences.
- Keep OOC and IC separate The actions and thoughts of the character are not a reflection of the player. Just because a
character is a jerk and hates your character, it doesn't mean that the player does.
- Respect your fellow players, old and new alike. Don’t hold OOC grudges for IC reasons. If something happens that you don’t like, try
and solve the issue off the site or contact the administrator or a moderator. If you don’t like someone on the site,
simply don’t play with them. Let’s keep this place drama free!
- Be outgoing! Socialize! That's the best way to get involved. We're a friendly bunch and love new players, but you
have to make an effort, too. Don't wait for plots to come to you; initiate some! This goes for old and new players alike. Mix and mingle, meet new people, have fun!
- Keep the General Discussion area PG-13! But other than that, all discussions are welcome!
- Original characters of any race, species, religion, gender, background, sexual orientation, you name
it! Yes, that even means animal characters, both mythological and real, are allowed, and that even means that
characters can be from another world or time period altogether. You can even create your
own humanoid and animal species, no approval required.
- Submitting your creation to the site is optional.
- You can play as many characters as you like.
Magic is perfectly acceptable. Go ahead and create your own magic spells and systems but just be sure to
stick within the rules.
Because some characters may come from a distant world, reality,
or realm, or even another time period altogether, modern technologies are permitted in moderation; that is to say that
futuristic gadgets and modes of dress are acceptable but bringing in a fleet of fighter jets or driving around
downtown Arca in a Mercedes are not. The medieval aspect of the site is the primary focus.
Got an idea for a site-wide plot (as in a plot that will effect not necessarily the entire site, but will at least effect the
site on a large scale, such as a war plot, an organization attacking a location, a massive site-wide plague, etc.)?
Awesome! SotE welcomes such plots, and they can be a wonderful way to unite everyone! It is suggested that you
propose the idea first on the Search and Plot
board, though, so that everyone can get in on it! Plots that involve mass destruction of established locations (such
as blowing up a the city of Arca or destroying Adela's castle) must be approved by the admin first.
Feel free to create your own NPCs at will! The only real restriction on this is that you may not create NPCs in
order to build your own personal army and power-play. A good guideline to follow is
that if you have more NPCs than actual player characters in your group, you probably need to tone it down. NPCs
must also follow the same rules as ordinary player characters.
It can be assumed that there are many NPCs in the villages, kingdoms, and any other inhabited areas, and these
characters may be manipulated at will by anyone to perform certain tasks and react to different situations. However,
as far as individual NPCs created by individual players, please be sure to ask the player before manipulating these
characters. Some people create what are known as “NJCs”, or Non-Joined Characters, and these characters
differ from NPCs slightly in that they may serve an important, if oftentimes temporary, plot purpose.
Mature themes involving violence, gore, drug use, sex, abuse, and other such “mature” topics can and do appear in
some threads and plots. This is acceptable, though please be sure that any other players involved in the thread are
comfortable with these subjects prior to writing them. In some cases, a “fade to black” might be preferable. It also
needs to be noted that these themes are not the basis of the site, and while acceptable, they should be used
as secondary elements in a plot. Please be mature, tasteful, and responsible when dealing with such subjects. Also be aware that by participating in threads containing
mature content you are agreeing that you are the legel age in your country to view and write that kind of material, or that you have the permission of a parent or legal guardian.
- Please use proper spelling and grammar, and make sure to spell-check and proof-read your posts.
- There is no set standard for how long your posts should be. We believe in quality over quantity. With that said, give the other players something to work with! Put effort into your writing! Paragraphs are loved.
- You may use any means you like to write your posts. This is a forum game, so all posts must be posted in the
forum in their proper threads, but if you wish to do a thread or some posts with another player (or players) via an
instant messenger service (like MSN or AIM), feel free to do so! Just be sure clean the chat log of any OOC banter
and post it on the forum in the location it took place in.
- Threads or posts with mature content must be marked with a visible warning (like “M”, “Mature”) and threads that
are marked with a “P”, “Private”, or a player’s name are private and cannot be joined without permission.
- Please try to keep the font size the same as the default one. It's easier on the eyes! No super tiny fonts.
- In your signature, you are limited to only one banner image. Please try not to stretch the forum! With text, less is
more. It is recommended you include a list of your characters and a link to their profiles if applicable so everyone
knows who you play.
- Avatars should be no bigger than 100 pixels wide and 150 pixels high.
- Please do not advertise anywhere except on the advertising board. That also means no advertising through PMs or the cbox.
All players are expected to be active in the game. While there is no minimum activity requirement and while it is
understood that life happens (and life is always more important!), please try and post at least once a week, or if you
know that you are going to be inactive or need to quit, inform everyone about it so that no one's left
hanging. Every so often there will be an activity check announced, usually every three to six months. If you
do not respond to the activity check, your account will be deleted. You’re of course welcome to rejoin if this
happens, though.
