On the outskirts of Northern Draconi Forest, there rests a series of farms surrounding one extremely small little town with nothing more than a Mill, a Tavern, a Smithy, and the Mayors Office. This was a place where people worked hard, living wages were won on the backs of men. The drought had been hard on everyone. The unseasonably long dry spell had gone of for two whole growing seasons and showed no signs of stopping. Thankfully, the river running through the town had not even shrunk. This was a great benefit to the farm who's land the river also flowed through. MacAllister farm was as productive as ever.

The owner, Jackson, has a sixth sense about these things. As soon as the drought settled in, he hired young men from the other farms to work for him as Field hands. This increased his own farm's production, but also kept the town profitable. He provided grain to the Mill and flour to less fortunate farms, this he did at no cost. He knew that if the town went, the farms would also go. Unknown to everyone but the mayor, Jackson kept very little money himself. He paid taxes on the Taker's farm, whose meager crops has been eaten by pests, he paid his field hands well, enough that they could provide for their family until the next season set in.

Jackson sat next to the river, two dark glass bottles sat next on him, both filled with wine. The cool of dusk was setting in, the day had been a hard one. Dry heat that stole the moisture from you mouth and quickly drove a man to stroke. They had their first case of heat stroke of the season that afternoon. He'd have to order the younger boys to make more frequent trips to the river to refill water barrels.

The giant of a man uncorked one of the bottles, A dark and rich tasting scutton, though it was relatively weak, an man could drown in it before becoming drunk. He upended the bottle into his mouth before opening the next. This was Metheglin, true, high quality mead normally only bought by nobility. He stood and slowly poured the contents of the bottle into the river, a libation to the river spirit. "Thank you for flowing as strong as ever, Tethys. You are keeping this town alive."

Once emptied, he recapped the bottle and took a few steps back, "When next I come, I will be a married man. It's about time that I had a son or daughter of my own." It was interesting how it happened, he made a comment a comment to one of his field hands in jest that he'd better follow the example of the rest of the young men and get married while he still had some claim to youth. Two days later, one of his neighbors came to him with an offer and a dowry. The wedding was tomorrow, a small little thing in the tavern, but many would be in attendance.

Jackson took up the scutton bottle and walked back to his home, tomorrow was going to be a long day.

As the last vestiges of dusk's tendrils of light seeped below the horizon a lone figure contemplated her upcoming nuptials with a modicum of resignment and displeasure. Una had known all along that I would one day be her fate to mare and leave the family homestead just as her three sisters befor her had done. However it did not make the actual marriage to a man nearly twice her age any easier of an idea to swallow.

Dawn would bring just another new day but by sundown she would be entering a new home and another man's bed whom she had only ever met in passing and never given much thought to. It was for this reason that ever since the wedding had been announced she had kept silent, refusing to acknowledge anyone with more than a look. Such was her way in responding to change and displeasure. She spent the entirety of the night locked up alone in the dark, staring out her small window even as the sun once more dragged itself up from the depths of the earth and bathed the sky in blood of its foes. A red sun for a wedding day was a bad omen heralding a dragon's ire upon any unwary soul.

"A very bad omen indeed," she murmured softly to herself even as she strapped a dragon-hilted dagger to her thigh and began to paint her face to ward off any ill will towards herself and for a bright future in spite of the red dawn warning of anything but.

Jackson hadn't slept that night. He spent it staring up at the ceiling deep in thought. Why was he doing this? He'd never had time for a woman before, what made him think now what any different? True, with all the farm hands he had hired, he found himself with alot more free time, but still! In nearly forty years, not once had he even tried to pursue anything other than a working relationship with people. He had too much to do, too much to see too, and so little time to do it all to be able to try and form any meaningful relationships. He couldn't remember the last time he had been referred to by Jackson, or Jack. It was always Mr. MacAllister. Was he just that personally separated from people?

It was the rising of the sun that stirred him, he rose from the bed. The Cat mewled in protest as it's comfortable nest against the warm human was disturbed. Jackson gave the calico a few soft strokes before getting into a set of work clothes. There were a few things that yet needed to be done and the wedding wasn't for several hours. He would have time to see to these tasks, and the physical labor would help clear his head. Unfortunately, stepping out to the porch of his house, he saw three young men. Two tending to the field, one carrying water and grain. The tasks he had assigned himself to do this morning. Of all the rotten luck.

The men where his betrothed's sisters' husbands. Also his farm hands. He had always assumed they were the ones to pass along the news that he was considering taking a wife, their air of smug after the announced betrothal had been enough for him to make the connection. But this proved it. Without a doubt. The oldest of the three called out to him, "Don't worry about it today, Mr. MacAllister, we have got the field work under control! You enjoy a day off! Don't you have a wedding to get ready for?"

Stupid, smug, well-meaning bastard.

"Thank you Kell," Was all that came from Jackson as he turned to walk back into his house. Not a man of many words.

Una rested silently as her sisters raced about her in a flurry of activity to prepare her for her next rite of passage. The long hours dragged on and on for her even as the other women declared there was not nearly enough time in worried whispers. She allowed herself to be poked, prodded, pulled, and plaited with the patience of a saint until they were all collectively satisfied. Only then once the sun began to set did she finally move to break her general stillness and head to the tavern where she would be quickly wed before supper and bed.

By the time the sun was high in the sky, Jackson came out of his house again- wearing the closest thing he had to formal wear. a thin cotton shirt without a single stain on it- which was surprising- and showed how rarely it came out of his storage chest, and dark grey pants that had been a part of a suit that belonged to his grandfather, Jackson would have worn the top if it had fit. But literal decades of working a till daily had left the last MacAllister much more broad of shoulder than his father's father. As he made his way down the front steps of his move- it was clear that the suit pants didn't quite fit either, but at least he wasn't bursting out of them.

As he walked passed his fields making his way towards the tavern, his farmhands stopped and cheered. Keel waved as he passed, "We'll head over to the wedding and reception once we finish up here!" Jackson smiled and waved back, continuing to walk. He was grateful to have good men like Keel around on his farm, if not for him and the rest of his farm hands- he would feel entirely alone on the day of his wedding.

An hour later, Jackson stood towards the back of the tavern, furthest away from the door as more and more people filed in. Many offered congratulations in one form or another- to which Jackson politely nodded and accepted despite his growing anxiety. Certainly he'd seen Una around the village from time to time, but he'd never interacted with her... what if she came to resent him? Then there was the prospect of his marital duty- in just a few hours... and he'd never even...

Three of the villagers put bows to fiddles as the Mayor walked in, playing a lively- celebratory tune as the Mayor took his place next to Jackson, small little village like this didn't have a church- so the Mayor oversaw the weddings. Mayor Rothschild smiled broadly at Jackson, his great silver mustache growing wider with the movement, "I was beginning to wonder if you'd take a wife. You certainly picked a good one Mr MacAllister. Are you ready?"

Jackson turned to face the door of the tavern as steps sounded on the deck outside, "I hope so."
