If I want to join an open thread which has had no one reply to it yet, should I message the person who started it, or just jump in with a reply?

Just jump in. As long as it is open, you always can jump in without asking first. Even if there are already existing posts. Although then you at least should read and try to understand what has happened until now.

You can jump in if it's open but I would check in with the person first just in case they forgot to label it's for their partner and that way there are not any oopsies. You don't have to but I know I always do. It also helps because then you can begin plot ideas right from the get go :)

I always thought, open threads should explicitly be marked as [open]?

They should indeed be but sometimes they don't always get marked ^_^ No label can also sometimes mean that the thread is open. Feel free to jump in or ask nizzy, whatever makes you feel most comfortable. Neither is wrong and it is totally up to you
