Three strands of butter-soft leather quietly creaked and groaned as nimble fingers twisted and wound them into a thin, tight braid. The motions were steady and nearly hypnotic as the man sat otherwise perfectly still and completely focused on the task at hand. When the braid was finished, it was thoroughly examined for flaws, before Pannoowau growled under his breath and tore the braid out to begin anew. It was crooked. One loop on the left side had folded wrong and stuck out more than the rest. It simply would not do.

Around him, a band of mismatched and rather scruffy-looking men bustled about their camp, making last-minute preparations or idly fidgeting and casting wary glances about towards both each other and their otherwise occupied employer. Most of them had never worked together before although they were all individually experienced in their respective field of crime and ill-repute. There was always the risk of back-stabbing for a bigger cut, but that wouldn't be a true concern until after the loot had been hauled. Until then, they each had a job to do and would need each other to pull the heist off successfully.

Their rather odd and eccentric leader though certainly wasn't doing anything to invoke confidence in them. The plan was all his and yet he continued for over an hour to sit and braid and unbraid the straps of leather without even a care in the world. It was getting to the point too where there really wasn't anything else to be done other than stare in growing disgust at him. They cast furtive glances at each other, wordlessly gesturing with their eyes and chins for one of their lot to interrupt him.

With an exasperated roll of his eyes, Bodaway finally stepped forward. He was a tall man with a rod-like figure and a short bow and quiver strapped to his back. "We're all set to go, boss," he stated quietly once he was standing right at Pannoowau's knee. The braiding man made no gesture of recognition though. Bodaway stood there awkwardly before clearly his throat and shifting his feet. "Boss?"

There was still no response.

"Boss!"

Plum-coloured eyes shot up and blinked widely out of a scowling face at Bodaway. He spoke no words as he raised a dark brow and jerked his chin slightly in a wordless question that spoke volumes. The standing man flinched slightly at the sudden hyper-focus on him. Nervously, he cleared his throat again and dipped his head. "We're read-"

"Why are you lot all just standing there? Don't you know we have a job to do?" Pannoowau barked at the group while climbing back to his feet. "I don't pay you to stand around like weeds!"

"You don't pay us at all," one of the group muttered darkly. Around him the other men shuffled back and looked anywhere but at him. Pannuuwau in turn gazed intently at the man and simply smiled until the other man looked away uncomfortably.

"You know what you need to do, move out! We don't have all days to get our shiny ladies! We get one shot at this, let's make it count!" The strap of leather was abandoned and forgotten where it lay as Pannoowau retrieved a small pack and slung it over his neck and shoulder so that it laid comfortably over his chest.

The "shiny" as Pannoowau called, it was several excessively heavy trunks of goods currently housed in a tiny logging town that despite its humble size and single mill, had someone managed to find itself rather heavily guarded for such a small operation. A thief always knew though, where there are guards, there is risk and profit. And to the mouse with big enough balls to scurry ahead for it, goes the big wheel of cheese.

The group of bandits slunk through the trees, each moving into position as their boss seemed to vanish entirely. For some it was startling, but the rest focused on their jobs. A gentle breeze tugged playfully at the boughs of the trees around them. Suddenly, a shout rang out from the town as one of the bandits ran forward panicked. "Fire! Fire! The mill's on fire! To the mill!"

Men poured out of doorways only to see the dark smoke already billowing high into the sky before jumping into action. Pannoowau could not have planned for the weather that had left things crisp and cool enough for his plan to run so smoothly, but he would take every ounce of luck he was due. The dry wood of the mill and its lumber caught fire easily and the wind spread it until the whole building, small as it was, was engulfed in flames and black smoke.

Amidst the confusion, some of the bandits put in the effort to help with putting out the flames before scuttling off to collect their treasures. Pannoowau though had other "shiny" in mind than the trunks currently under minimal guard with the unexpected emergency. A natural-born climber, the man had actually been high in the trees when the shout had gone around and made quick work of shimmying his way through the open window of the sole inn's top floor.

He landed in a crouched position in the shadows with light feet and dancing eyes that were quick to take in his surroundings. Unknown to his "colleagues," Pannoowau had caught wind of an extra juicy tidbit of information, namely that one of the local hoity-toity high ups was in town for an inspection. If the thief knew anything, it was that this type loved their creature comforts and heavy purses of coin. This shiny would be all his without a need for divvying up. He just needed to get his sticky little claws on it.

It was often asked why Honovi bothered with such low, muddy work. By all accounts, being related to an Archon as he was, being as high up in the food chain as he was, he shouldn't have had to do work a day in his life. Not this kind of work, anyway, the kind that involved long, rainy, miserable walks through the woods and the monotony of checking books and shipments.

"Delegate, Honey. That's what being the boss is about." Was an oft-repeated sentiment that Honovi could only smile and wave aside. After all, if you wanted to guarantee something was being done right, you needed to do it yourself, and having the boss come down on the regular to inspect your work meant there was less temptation to get a little... sloppy... with the goods.

In the end, arguing for that bottom line always won. In the end, Honovi had the satisfaction of knowing that getting sloppy with the goods didn't always mean a crate of contraband.

The truth of it was that Honovi loved the low, muddy work. He loved trading in his fine outfits for traveling leathers, loved strapping his quiver to his back and putting away all the baubles that usually decorated him. The low, muddy work meant strong, practical armor, warm, familiar furs, and above all else it meant absolute freedom.

Or, at least, the illusion of freedom. Honovi knew these outings were only temporary. He knew that he'd be expected back without delay, and he knew any excuse that might be drummed up would be thrown under such harsh suspicion that he'd not be able to go out again for months at a time. It was better to just take what he could get— better to have a few days out of each month versus a week out of four.

But, certain catastrophic instances were more than excuse enough. When the cry of "fire" went up, for a single, fevered moment Honovi was ecstatic. He'd need to have an investigation, he'd need to re-tally their inventory, he'd need to cut the hands off of whoever was responsible and whip the shit out of whoever had been on guard duty. It was so much work, packaged and tied up with a bow and dropped right into his lap like his birthday had come early.

No gift came without a price.

Sure, the weather had allowed for more fire-prone conditions, but it had been like this for a few days now. It was suspicious that there would suddenly be an emergency of this magnitude just as he arrived onto the scene. Best case scenario, it was an entire fluke and he'd be taking every last lost item out of someone's negligent skin.

Worst case scenario was a trap. Fires had this nasty little habit of being, all at once, entirely destructive and amazingly distracting. No one paid attention to shit when a fire was happening, not like they were usually meant to do. Honovi watched from his window with vague interest for a moment, before stepping out into the hallway to instruct one of his more seasoned guards to go sniff out whatever rats might be thinking they'd get a cut of grain.

It meant emptying the inn, of course, and leaving Honovi perfectly alone. Which, perhaps, for someone who was used to simply delegating all his life, might have been dangerous. He pulled an arrow from the quiver resting by his bed, and knocked it against his bow in a slow, silent motion, tucked back against the corner to have an easy target of both the door and singular window.

All he had to do was wait.

Turns out, he didn't have to wait very long. It was impressive for a thief to choose the window here, considering the feat of acrobatics it required, but ultimately it wasn't surprising. What was surprising was just how... handsome the thief was.

Well, maybe not that surprising. A lot of thievery relied on natural guile and charm. But this sort of job seemed less the conman's gambit, and so Honovi had simply prepared himself to shoot some random nameless miscreant in the throat and be done with his evening.

Shooting this one in the throat simply would not do. Honovi shifted his aim just to the right, and the arrow cut through the air before landing with a loud THUNK in the wood of the windowpane just inches from the thief's ear. Already knocking another arrow, Honovi drew it back even as he stepped from his corner, his night robe unbound and sleeves rolled up for ease of movement.

"That was a courtesy, not an error. Don't move, or I'll make sure you don't." He said in a low drawl as if it was all casually boring to him. He'd always had a distinct talent for acting, after all.

The arrow sunk into the wood by his ear with a very solid thump that left the arrow quivering and the fletching tickling his nose as Pannoowau stared in slight surprise at the new development. The arrow was quickly collected and twirled between his fingers mindlessly as he dragged his gaze across the room to what he could only describe as shiny.

He drank in the sight of lean, toned muscle, dark skin, long silky hair, and a pretty face with a broad smirk of appreciation. The thief made no efforts to hide his interest as he openly stared at all that the robe failed to cover including a rather impressive set of assets. He blinked slowly like an overconfident cat before smirking wider and offering the blue-eyed man a wink and an even broader, devilish grin.

"Shiny," he purred, moving to stand tall on his feet and take a step forward towards the other man. A snap of a bowstring followed by sharp pain in the outer meat of his thigh made him grunt and wobble. "Right! Don't move! That's what I was forgetting. Right, right, right," he muttered bobbing his head up and down to himself as he shifted his weight to his uninjured leg.

"Didn't anyone ever tell you it's bad manners to shoot the messenger?" Pannoowau smacked his lips and shook his head. He then tilted his head first one way and then the other, still taking in the beauty in front of him. The poised bow aimed at him and the arrow still lodged in his leg seemed to not phase him in the slightest.

"You're shinier than I expected. That's a problem." He tilted his head to the side again. "No, not a problem. Very shiny. The most shiny even!" Pannoowau wiggled his brows with a shit-eating grin as he gave the warrior another once over. "So what's a pretty, big," his gaze dropped openly to stare at the man's crotch, "shiny like you doing in a place like- do you smell smoke? I smell smoke! Huh. Weird," he commented with furrowed brows as he remembered the arrow in his hand and began to idly play with the feathers on it, enjoying the the texture bending and gliding against the pad of his thumb.

The shot to the thief's leg had barely landed before Honovi was stringing a third arrow, aim steady and face impassive. He'd noticed the lengthy stare to his hips, but did nothing to cover himself. For one, Honovi didn't really possess anything close to modesty.

For another, he knew when to take advantage of a situation. Doubly so when the thief in question wasn't entirely terrible to look at. Honestly, it was the mere fact that Honovi's skin didn't crawl just from looking at this uppity little thief, that kept said thief breathing just this little bit longer.

"Messenger?" he commented, quietly, trusting that his words would be listened to regardless of their volume. He also didn't want to risk any raised voices in case some of his entourage were nearby and came running to investigate. Honovi didn't need backup, not just yet... and the continual pointed stares was making his skin do something much nicer than crawl.

Honovi pressed his lips together, humming quietly as he stepped forward and further to the side, bow still raised but a little less distance between them.

"Drop the arrow. Kick it over to the door, now." Honovi waited, eyes narrowing a bit as the command was followed, giving himself time to consider just how he might answer the thief's question, if he decided to answer him at all. The smell of smoke was rather obvious, but not terribly pressing just yet. Certainly no one had come running up to tell him the whole goddamn place had gone up in flames and was going to take the forest with it, so it must still have been under control.

He had some time, yet. After this fiasco, who knew when the next time he'd get would be? It'd be too dangerous— far, far too dangerous. Anywhere Honovi went, it would be with a cloud of muscle, if he were permitted beyond the estate at all.

It was infuriating. Like Honovi didn't know how to press an advantage, or cover his bases. Speaking of which... he stopped chewing at his lip and snapped his gaze up from the thief's twitchy hands, staring the other man dead in the eyes.

"Strip." He said, as casually as if he'd been commenting on the weather, though a little gesture with his bow said it was not a polite request. "Pile everything over there by the fireplace. Nice and slow, now."

For a man with an arrow in the meat of his thigh and another pointed at him by a rather attractive and exposed man, Pannoowau was surprisingly rather calm and collected. If anything, he pouted when he was ordered to discard the retrieved arrow that he has grown rather fond of twirling about already. The thief held it out sideways in offering, opening his mouth briefly to suggest the Shiny take it from him but the tightening of the bowstring and fierce gems glaring back at him gave him pause to reconsider. It was with a very heavy sigh therefore that he tossed it to the directed door, looking after it with a pout and slight slump of his shoulders.

His depression did not last long though as the order to slowly strip instantly made him perk up. Pannoowau smirked broadly, lifting his chin and grinning ear to ear with pride. "Have to say this is a new one in the whole courier experience thing. Can't say I've ever had to strip down just to deliver a message but hey," he raised his hands to show them empty and himself harmless, "I'm all up for it."

Thick, dark brows waggled as he winked and slid his hands down to tug at the hem of his shirt. He was slow as he rolled and pulled each side up and then dragged the fine, soft blue cloth up and over his head. His slim figure rolled as he wiggled out of it and chucked the cloth over to the fireplace without a care. He left his two necklaces in place, absolutely refusing to remove them even if asked.

Instead he slid his hands to the ties at his waist and made to undo them when plum eyes noticed and remembered the arrow currently lodged in his leg. "Ah, yes." He popped his lips three times while reaching back to feel if the arrow had gone all the way through or not. The sharp prick of his finger answered that and he quickly brought his fingertip to his mouth to suck.

"Alrighty," he muttered under his breath. Taking a deep breath, Pannoowau tried to twist the arrow in his leg and while relieved that it turned and was not lodged in the bone, he definitely went pale for a moment at the pain. His eyes dilated and darkened as he made quick work of snapping the arrowhead off, showing it to his captor, and then tossing it the way of the other arrow. The shaft was tugged out the opposite direction. The thief whistled and rocked on his heels for a moment, twirling the wood between his fingers and over the back of his hand. Blood oozed slowly down his leg, staining his trousers but not causing much of an immediate concern for him to worry about.

"Never fear the show may now continue," he quipped before the shaft behind his ear and wriggling his hips out of his pants and boots. Both were carelessly kicked off in the general direction of the shirt. Now completely stark naked and completely unashamed of his state of undress, Pannoowau placed his hands on his hips and beamed. He didn't stay still long though as he was soon tugging the arrow shaft back down again and twirling it some more so that the feathers brushed and tickled his lips. He actually had to pause at one point to run the pad of his thumb over his bottom lip to ease the itch there before he continued once more.

He was completely distracted again or perhaps just completely mad as the more naked of the two men seemed to entirely forget about the bow and arrow trained on him again. He prowled his way closer on quiet and confident feet in slow, measured steps (with only the smallest amount of a limp) until he was standing nearly toe to toe with the taller man. He craned his neck back to stare up into eyes bluer than a fresh summer day, the crooked smile never once leaving his his scarred face. The feathered tip of the arrow came up suddenly between them, booping Honovi on the nose gently before running down his cheek and the column of his dark throat.

"Hello, Shiny," Pannoowau murmured softly. He leaned in then slowly, his breath ghosting over the other man's chest as he pressed his forehead to warm skin and allowed the roughened pads of his left hand to drag up the back of the green robe until he was able to touch the long strands of hair that tickled his palm. Then he became more focused on gently combing and petting the raven locks that were ever so thick and soft. "So Shiny," he breathed in awe, his lips moving against the other man's chest as his right hand with the arrow still loosely clutched in it rested on a warm, bare hip. "Such a pretty Shiny," he inhaled while chuckling, "smells so good too. Best Shiny even."
