Physical Description

Zhirai while quite tall as an individual, is actually short for his species. He has a very lanky and almost delicate-looking build that looks like it could use a few extra helpings of whatever is cooking. The scars upon his face and body tell of his strength and ability to survive though perhaps in spite the odds stacked against him. The most noticeable of which is the jagged scar that runs from above his left browline down over his eye, his cheek, the corner of his mouth, and down across his chin, giving him a perpetual brooding scowl.

His skin is very pale with a slight, icy blue tint to it that never tans or freckles. Zhirai's hair is pure white and traditionally kept loose in a thick, wild, windblown mess. His right eye is also blue with grey sclera while his left eye is a blind, milky white.

For attire he is partial to lightweight clothes that allow him to move quickly and easily. In the colder climate of his homeland, this meant soft furs and limited armor. Now in Adela though he has taken to wearing as few layers as possible against what he considers to be the oppressive heat. He longs for winters though they are never as cold as he would prefer. Zhirai wears a small teal crystal orb ornament around his neck with a lock of dark red hair in it and will fiddle it when deep in thought or anxious. He also has a large, indigo blue tattoo of a large pair of rings with swirling waves in the center of them on the center of his chest. His favorite jewelry though tends to be simple rings of which he has obtained several in his travels.

Personality

SWEAR LIKE A SAILOR
Zhirai has a very caustic, blunt, and crass manner of speaking. He is not one to mince words and has little patience for flowery speeches and long-winded formalities. He will be the first to give you the truth as bluntly and plainly as possible whether it's what you want to hear or not. The truth is the truth and anything else is a disgusting waste of hot air.

THIS ONE BITES
His bite is not limited to words though. He likes his personal space and when crowded, he will give only one warning to back down. After that all bets are off. Zhirai is not afraid to put his pointy teeth to good use if left with no other option. After all, actions speak twice as loud as words when an opponent chooses to be deaf.

PAIN BREEDS STRENGTH
He lives a life of varying and sometimes constant pain. This tends to make him quite irritable and impatient towards others. However, through sheer force of willpower he continues to press on in all that he puts himself to task. Zhirai is stubborn when it comes to what he is capable of and he isn't about to let his own body get in his way whether it be because of pain or height or blindness.

SUFFER NO FOOLS
The fastest way to to get on Zhirai's bad side is to behave stupidly and brazenly in manners that endanger others. He cannot stand fools, especially those that are all talk and no action when the time of need comes. It is also why he struggles with dealing with children. Not only does he speak to them as if they were adults and far above their understanding, but he has little patience for their whining and silliness. (Spoiler: Voted most likely to dropkick a baby.)

COLD HANDS, WARM HEART
Beneath the icy, bitter exterior though is a heart. Zhirai is fiercely loyal to those who he has allowed close to him. His trust is hard to earn, but his bonds are unshakable. Whether it be with words or fists, he will defend his "kin" until he is blue in the face (well bluer than usual).

Things

• Due to severe migraines, he suffers from a great deal of nausea and general discomfort. This has lead him to not have much of an appetite most days in lieu of being sick after eating something.
• Consumes a lot of ginger and more recently, peppermint. Both are kept in a small pouch that is at hand at all times to treat ongoing nausea.
• Since moving to Adela, he has taken up pipe smoking. It's a double edged sword though, as while it helps with lessening appetite, it does make the headaches worse.
• Loves stringed instruments. Zhirai used to play several back home and has taken several opportunities while traveling to admire each new one he finds.
• Can properly clean an entire large fish in under 10 seconds.
• Quite proficient with a longknife and doesn't go very far without one strapped to his hip.

Magic/Abilities

Foresight: At the cost of severe migraines and sometimes even seizures, Zhirai possesses the ability to foresee immediate danger at random. He has no way to control this ability and the time range can be anything from mere seconds to several minutes before an event occurs. Because the future is also uncertain and ever-changing, so too can his visions be. Some times they are merely niggling and hazy sensations of moving through a fog, signaling something is close but indeterminately dangerous. Other times the visions are like being gutted with their intensity and sudden clarity. The worst of them have caused seizures but all of them bring about varying levels of painful migraines.

Relationships

A Bibi and an Opo still somewhere back home probably worried sick over their sons.

Older brother: Died in the snow of the mountains. Zhirai carries a lock of his hair in a reliquary since it was impossible to burn the body as is the Starstrider custom. He feels some guilt in that he could not prevent the danger that took his brother's life.

History

Zhirai was a somewhat sickly child growing up. He suffered seizures that brought harsh migraines and made eating or keeping food down difficult. Because of this, he turned out somewhat shorter than his peers although nonetheless keen to work just as hard alongside the rest of them.

He comes from a long line of sailors and fisherman and had his sea legs long before he ever had his land ones. Zhirai spent many of his early days working alongside his family repairing nets, catching fish, and cleaning them for eating. It was an honorable existence and while hard work, Zhirai enjoyed the flow of it.

Unable to find his Resonance among his own people though, he was eager to join others that dared brave the cold beyond their homeland in search of the ones that made their blood sing for hope and home. He was not alone though. In the beginning his elder brother had also traveled with them but would later succumb to the elements in the mountains.

Zhirai is one of the remaining ten of his people that made it as far as Adela. His blood still sings and he is still drawn to search for his one. He longs for the sea and his home though, but the harmony to his song continues to call him further and further inland. He feels painfully torn between the two but for now the search has a stronger pull on him than his homesickness.
